The ex-boyfriend of the Ugandan Olympic athlete, who <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/09/05/ugandan-olympic-athlete-rebecca-cheptegei-dies-after-being-set-on-fire-by-boyfriend/">set her on fire and killed her</a>, has died. He died from burns he got during the attack on his ex-girlfriend.
The man, Dickson Ndiema, ambushed her in her home as she came from church and set Rebecca Cheptegei on fire after dousing her in petrol. Cheptegei died 4 days later.
Ndiema however also burned himself during the attack, sustaining 40% burns. He died this week at the intensive care unit of the same  hospital that his victim had been admitted before she died.
The Kenyan hospital released a statement that said in part:

“He developed respiratory failure as a result of the severe airway burns and sepsis that led to his eventual death on Monday evening at 18:30 hours [15:30 GMT] despite life-saving measures” 
</blockquote>
Said Cheptegei’s father on the boyfriends death:
<blockquote>
“This guy is dead because he killed my daughter. He has died because of his actions.”
</blockquote>
Ndiema apparently attacked Cheptegei over a piece of land they were fighting over.
He was to be arrested for the murder of Cheptegei after recovering from the burns. The murder case has apparently now been dropped following his death, as he was the only suspect.
Beatrice Ayikoru, an official with the Uganda Olympic Committee commented on the development:

“I don’t wish bad things on anyone, but of course I would have loved for him to face the law as an example for others so that these attacks on women can stop.”
</blockquote>
Cheptegei, who was 33,  was a Ugandan-Kenyan born in the border area of the two countries. She chose to be part of the Ugandan Olympics athletics team after she failed to represent Kenya. She competed at this year’s Paris Olympics and came 44th in the marathon.
She is the 3rd athlete to be murdered in Kenya in the last 3 years by a former or current partner.

Elite athletes competing in the event get world ranking points for the International Triathlon Union (ITU) ranking system.
This means that the points scored by athletes will ultimately become Olympic Ranking Qualification points.

Bonaqua Troutbeck African Triathlon Cup Wheels Turn 

Shadreck Mlauzi has been appointed as the new coach of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mighty_Warriors/">Mighty Warriors,</a> with Yohanne Chikaola, Sithethelwe “Kwinji 15” Sibanda, and Choice Dambuza serving as assistant coaches. Ndega Matsika is the goalkeeper’s coach, Portia Chiota is the team manager, and Dorothy Mugari is the Safeguarding officer. Chiwoniso Mashakada is the media officer.
Mlauzi previously led the Zimbabwe senior women’s team to the Olympic Games in 2016 and the Africa Cup of Nations Games finals in Cameroon. He will now select players for the COSAFA Women’s Championship, which will take place from October 4 to 15 in South Africa.
The Mighty Warriors, who missed the 2022 edition due to suspension, are placed in a group with Namibia, Botswana, and Lesotho. The top team from each group will qualify for the semi-finals, along with the best runner-up from all three groups. Shadreck Mlauzi Has Been Appointed As The New Mighty Warriors Coach

Kenyan world 800m athletics record holder David Rudisha has told local media how he survived after a plane he was travelling in crash-landed on Saturday evening.
The plane which was carrying him and five others came down near a park in Kajiado county in Kenya’s southeast.
The retired Olympic champion told the Daily Nation newspaper: 
<blockquote>
All was well close to seven or eight minutes into the flight when the engine of the plane suddenly went quiet.
</blockquote>
Rudisha described the moment as scary, when one of the plane’s wings hit a tree, spun and landed on a rocky field. Pictures from the scene suggest that the plane also flipped over.
One of the occupants was reportedly being treated in a hospital with injuries after the crash. Others who had minor injuries were taken to the hospital and later discharged.
Rudisha who was reportedly unhurt was on his way back from attending the annual Maasai Olympics event at Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary in Kajiado county.
Rudisha holds the 800m world record he set at the London Olympics in 2012. 
The 2012 and 2016 Olympic 800m champion who last raced internationally five years ago, reportedly said he is considering transitioning into coaching.
He missed time in the last Olympic cycle due to a quad muscle strain, back problems, a car crash and surgery for a broken ankle. He underwent left leg surgery last November.

Kenyan World Athletics Champion Survives Plane Crash

A Ugandan athlete has gone missing from a Japanese hotel on Friday ahead of the Olympics games hosted by the Asian country.
The missing 20-year-old man identified as Julius Ssekitoleko was was training as part of the nine-member Ugandan team in Izumisano, Osaka prefecture.
Teammates realized the athlete was absent around noon Friday when his saliva test sample was not delivered and they found his hotel room empty, city officials said.
There was no training Friday morning and he was last seen in his room in the early hours of Friday.
Officials said after failing to find him inside the hotel, officials notified police for a broader search.
They added that there was no 24-hour monitoring at the hotel, therefore, the exact time the athlete got out of the facility is not known.
Media reports said Ssekitoleko, who did not meet Olympic standards in the latest international rankings, was to return home next week.
Kyodo News agency said he left a note saying he wanted to stay in Japan and work.

The Olympics games are scheduled to run from the 23rd of  July to the 8th of August 2021.
The games were previously postponed over the outbreak of the coronavirus.
There were fears that the Olympics will be postponed again but the Japanese government was adamant the games would continue saying preventive measures had been put in place.
Two members of the Ugandan delegation tested positive for the virus but they have since ended their quarantine requirement and the team has been training since July 7.

Ugandan Athlete Missing From Japanese Hotel Ahead Of Olympics

Tokyo Olympics will go ahead as planned despite the raging COVID-19 pandemic, Reuters reports. This was revealed by the Tokyo 2020 President Yoshiro Mori who said they are working closely with the Olympic Committee to ensure the games go ahead as planned.
Nori was speaking during a Japan Sports Research Commission meeting when he said:
<blockquote>We will hold the Olympics, regardless of how the coronavirus (situation) looks We must consider new ways of hosting the Olympics</blockquote>
Japan is expected to vaccinate its health workers this month and those aged 65 and above in April but it is still not clear if it will be able to achieve herd immunity when 15000+ Olympic and Paralympics athletes visit the Asian nation.
There is chatter around the possibility of having the games behind closed doors according to the International Paralympic Committee Chair Andrew Parsons who told the AFP that:
<blockquote>We do understand that the Games will not be the same without spectators, but the impact of the Games is very strong outside the host city and the host nation.</blockquote>
The 2020 <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/03/24/tokyo-olympics-postponed-to-2021-due-to-covid-19/">Olympics were postponed</a> to this year last year due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. They were supposed to and they will still be held in Japan in July this year.
