Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has reportedly performed 41 successful heart surgeries in 2024, the highest number of such operations conducted in a single year since 2016.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/record-heart-surgeries-at-parirenyatwa">The Sunday Mail</a>, Terence Mautsi, the public relations officer for the hospital group, said that they aim to increase this number to between 100 and 150 in 2025. Said Mautsi:

Open-heart surgery has progressed this year. We have performed 41 surgeries in total. This is important, being the highest number performed per year in comparison to other years since 2016 and we are planning to double the number next year, resources permitting.
The aim is for the unit to become a fully fledged one, which is able to fulfil national obligations, including teaching specialists, and this can only be possible by increasing the number of procedures done at the hospital.
The hospital is aiming at having a 10-bed cardiothoracic ICU (intensive care unit) and HDU (high dependency unit); this will allow smooth functioning and we are engaged with at least three cardiothoracic units to train percussionists.
</blockquote>
Mautsi said they were unable to meet their target due to occasional shortages of essential consumables. He said:
<blockquote>
The ideal number of patients to keep a single cardiothoracic surgeon competent, of 150 per year, has not been reached.
There are many factors which contributed to us not reaching the target. There are times when we ran out of consumables and it took a long to procure due to the process involved. We had instances where the resources were available but patients failed to turn up due to fear.
The patients need to be admitted into ICU after the procedure; unfortunately, we have one general ICU for the whole hospital.
We should have an independent ICU for cardiothoracic surgery; this will allow us to function more effectively.

Mautsi said that there are currently 200 patients on the Parirenyatwa waiting list, with the waiting period being six for those who agree to undergo surgery.
In addition to the 41 successful heart surgeries, two patients unfortunately lost their lives due to postoperative complications. He said:
<blockquote>
One patient developed an infection and succumbed almost two weeks after surgery and the other patient was bleeding postoperatively and unfortunately we were unable to secure the relevant blood products due to shortages.
We aim to do at least 100 to 150 next year. We are engaging with the Ministry of Health and Child Care as our parent ministry, the hospital administration, sister hospitals, local industries and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) to reach our target.
Surgical camps allow us to do more patients; the last camp we did 10 patients in a week, so we are planning to do more camps. We are engaged with other units in Africa to get personal training as percussionists.

Mautsi added that 12 children underwent successful surgeries this year, with 11 of the patients diagnosed with congenital heart disease and one suffering from rheumatic heart disease.

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has appealed to the public for help in identifying a patient who was involved in a car accident and brought to the facility by the police.
In a statement, the hospital said that the patient was found without any identification and is currently suffering from memory loss, which has left him unable to recall any details about himself or the accident. Reads the statement:

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals would like to inform the public about an unknown person found at the hospital.
The patient was brought in by Police Officers after being involved in a car accident. The patient is suffering from memory loss and has no identification particulars with him.
Accordingly, we are appealing to the general public to raise awareness on the status of the said patient in order to help in his identification.

Parirenyatwa Hospital needs help to identify a patient from a car crash. The patient has memory loss and can't remember anything about themselves. They were brought by the police with no ID. The hospital is asking the public for help to identify the patient. If anyone has information, they should contact the hospital's Public Relations Office. Parirenyatwa Hospital Appeals For Assistance In Identifying Car Accident Victim

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (PGH) says it has always made efforts to safeguard the public from unscrupulous people who masquerade as its employees with malicious intentions to fleece unsuspecting members of the public.
This comes after three people were arrested at the hospital for impersonating doctors this month.
In a statement, PGH said that in 2023 alone, 33 offenders were picked up by its Security Department, while this year from January 2024 to date, 11 suspects have been nabbed. The hospital said:

Bogus Doctors, bogus tutors who extort prospective student nurses and thieves who steal from both staff members and patients are some of those criminals who have been picked up and handed over to the police.
Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is a vast institution with close to 400 Doctors of all professional levels and a total staff establishment of close to 4000.
Unscrupulous people take advantage of our vastness and complexity to carry out nefarious activities. 
Fortunately, our Surveillance Teams remain vigilant and have always apprehended these unruly elements who try to penetrate and abuse our systems.

PGH said investigations it has carried out so far have established that the 3 recently arrested fake Doctors did not manage any patient.
It vowed that surveillance teams shall continue to flush out criminals bent on abusing public trust in the institution.
The three fake doctors who were arrested at the hospital in April 2024 are Andrew Mapulanga (52), Blessing Nyanzira (24), and Douglas Garikayi Mutoredzanwa.
Mapulanga was caught by an alert security officer at Parirenyatwa Hospital on 15 April. His arrest followed the discovery of articles intended for criminal use.
Mutoredzanwa was arrested on 23 April after his bizarre behaviour revealed that he was bogus. It is alleged that while analyzing an X-ray in front of a patient, he held it upside down. His arrest at Parirenyatwa Hospital revealed an outstanding warrant related to a 2019 case.
Nyanzira was arrested on 25 April as he attempted to bypass a staff security checkpoint during the lunch hour break.
All three men appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court and their cases are yet to be finalised.

11 Fake Doctors Arrested At Parirenyatwa Hospital

Work to fix radiotherapy machines at the Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals has reportedly commenced, raising the hope that cancer patients may finally get treatment at the country’s largest referral hospital.
However, the head of the Radiotherapy department at Parirenyatwa Hospital, Nothando Mutizira has lamented the non-availability of drugs and cancer machines in the country.
As reported by <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/work-to-fix-radiotherapy-machines-begins-at-parirenyatwa-patients-stranded-years-after-equipment-broke-down/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>, radiotherapy machines at Parirenyatwa Hospital have been down for the past few years which has resulted in cancer patients dying without treatment.
In an interview with journalists following the donation of cancer drugs worth US$50 000 by CABS, Pick n Pay in partnership with the Cancer Association of Zimbabwe on Tuesday, Mutizira said:

As you know we have had a challenge with our radiotherapy equipment for a while but we are thankful that the engineers who are meant to come to fix our machines came for the initial assessments to see what needs to be fixed, what supplies they need to buy to fix these machines.
So they have done their initial assessment and they will be coming back soon to fix the machines so we are looking forward to our radiotherapy machines being up and running very soon.

She said the chemotherapy drugs donated will go a long way in treating common cancers. Said Mutizira:

These drugs are chemotherapy drugs. These are drugs we commonly administer to most of our cancer patients so usually, we have a challenge of our patients not being able to afford these drugs such that it leaves us in a difficult situation where we are not able to deliver the treatment that we wish to give to our patients.
With the availability of these drugs where our patients are not going to be buying these drugs since it’s a donation, it will make our job a lot easier because then we are guaranteed that our patients will be able to receive the treatment we prescribe.

Reports suggest there is only one functional radiotherapy machine in Zimbabwe and it is privately owned and this has forced cancer patients to seek treatment outside the country.

Work To Fix Cancer Machines At Parirenyatwa Hospital Commences

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Wednesday morning commissioned medical equipment and vehicles at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals. These resources, including radiology equipment, dental chairs, virtual hospital equipment, electromedical equipment, and various vehicles, will enhance medical services and improve lives, according to the President’s social media post after the event. These are as follows:

President Mnangagwa Commissions Medical Equipment, Ambulances At Parirenyatwa

A team of local doctors and specialists recently conducted two successful open-heart surgeries at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.
The team comprised three cardiothoracic surgeons, six anesthetists, two perfusionists, three student doctors, six theatre nurses, two laboratory specialists and six other specialists.
Open heart surgery is an operation to repair a fault or damage in the heart and requires the surgeon to open the chest to access the heart.
<a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/two-open-heart-surgeries-at-parirenyatwa">The Sunday Mail</a> reported that 29-year-old Blessing Bonda, who suffered from a rheumatic heart condition, was the first to undergo a six-hour-long operation a fortnight ago.
Last week, the team performed a second operation on another patient, who chose to remain anonymous, in three-and-a-half hours.
The last open-heart surgery in Zimbabwe was conducted in October 2018 and since then, patients have had to travel to India, Italy and South Africa for the procedure.
Cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon Dr. Simukayi Machawira, who was part of the team of specialists, said that they will begin operating on at least one patient weekly.
An estimated 700 people are on the waiting list for open-heart surgeries in the country.
Parirenyatwa Hospital is the only hospital that provides open-heart surgeries in Zimbabwe.

Doctors Perform Two Open-heart Surgeries At Parirenyatwa Hospital

The man who was found dead in a vehicle abandoned on Monday morning just outside Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals in Harare was a suspected armed robber, reported <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/details-emerge-on-robber-found-dead-near-hospital/">The Herald</a>.
The unidentified man found dead was believed to have been part of a gang of armed robbers.
The man’s body had wounds on the chest and stomach and was lying on the back seat of the vehicle which was parked along Mazowe Street.
The vehicle was reportedly stolen in Parktown, Waterfalls, on Wednesday last week.
According to The Herald, the owner parked his car on Wednesday at around 10 PM before retiring to bed after locking all the doors.
At around 5.30 AM the next day he found his vehicle was missing and reported the theft to the police.
Police suspected that the vehicle was being used as a getaway car in other crimes.
The vehicle had a single registration number plate (ADW 5062) attached on the front and no rear plate.
Police recovered several cellphones, housebreaking equipment, a crowbar, a golf stick, beer bottles and electrical cables, among other goods and clothes in the vehicle.
Police believe the suspected armed robber might have been seriously injured while committing crimes in the company of his accomplices.
It is believed his accomplices probably left the vehicle near the hospital hoping that it would be discovered in time to give the man medical treatment.

"Man Found Dead In A Car Near Parirenyatwa Hospital Was A Robber"

A body of an unidentified man with wounds on the chest and stomach was found early on Monday morning in a silver Honda Fit just outside Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare.
<a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/man-found-dead-outside-parirenyatwa-hospital/">The Herald</a> reported that the man’s body was lying in the back seat of the vehicle which was parked near the main gate along Mazowe Street.
The vehicle was not properly parked as it was along the pavement and this attracted the curiosity of some passers-by who went to investigate.
The body was reportedly lying in the back seat.
A team of detectives from CID Homicide, CID Studios, and CID Forensics went to the scene to conduct investigations.
Lameck Kwari, who is employed as a security guard near the hospital told The Herald that he was the one who reported the incident to the police. He said:

I was among the first people to arrive at the scene and when I touched the man, I discovered that he was already dead and I proceeded to Harare Central Police Station to make a report.

Man Found Dead Inside Car Close To Parirenyatwa Hospital

Doctors based at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, which is Zimbabwe’s largest referral hospital, have requested a meeting with authorities at the hospital over the deteriorating conditions.
In a letter addressed to the hospital’s chief executive officer Ernest Manyawu, the doctors said the hospital had no basic medicines, even for primary care. Part of the letter reads:

As healthcare practitioners, we spent innumerable years in school training to serve our people.
However, the critical lack of consumables in our hospital is rendering us ineffective as we can no longer deliver the services required at the tertiary hospital.
… We often run out of and lack basic sundries which should be available even at primary institutions.
To mention a few, there have been shortages or lack of yellow cannulas, 5ml and 10ml syringes, sterile gloves, betadine, cotton wool strapping, catheters, and urine bags.
Our U&amp;E machine (urea and electrolytes) is always down, the most common being no reagents, sometimes no water or it’s a mechanical issue.

In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200004373/doctors-flag-pari-decline-as-on-call-doctors-sleep-in-cars">NewsDay</a> on Wednesday night, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals spokesperson Linos Dhire confirmed that authorities had received the letter. He said:

Doctors' Letter Exposes Deteriorating Conditions At Parirenyatwa Hospital

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the arrest of a Harare-based tout for punching and killing a 58-year-old man to death during a dispute over ZW$350.
A police report seen by Pindula News says the tout, Blessing Stephen was arrested on Friday 21 October 2022. Read the statement:

On 21/10/22, Police in Harare arrested Blessing Stephen (40) for a case of murder which occurred along Leopold Takawira Road near Parirenyatwa Hospital on the same date at around 1515 hours. The suspect, who is a tout, allegedly struck the victim, Mafu Sipho (58), twice on the face with a clenched fist after the victim had snatched ZWL$350, which the suspect got paid after loading a city-bound mushika-shika Honda Fit vehicle.

Meanwhile, police in Zvishavane arrested Jaison Mhara (60) on Saturday 22 October 2022 after he was found in possession of approximately 50kgs of burnt copper cables in a boot of a Toyota Fun Cargo at Pote Farm along Masvingo-Zvishavane Road near Runde Bridge.
The theft of copper cables has been on the increase in Zimbabwe.

Tout Punches Man To Death During Dispute Over ZWL$350

Former Deputy Finance and Economic Minister Terrence Mukupe has bemoaned the state of Parirentaywa Hospital and said he visited the facility and saw “dead bodied lying everywhere”
Mukupe said his friend was recovering from a heart ailment when they were diagnosed with COVID-19 and deteriorated after that:
<blockquote>I’m disappointed…. a friend goes into Pari with a heart condition, tested for Covid and was negative… was getting treatment for the past 8 days and responding well, family was talking and laughing with her yesterday…. goes into a coma suddenly overnight and has contracted Covid whilst in hospital!!! Manje tikarwara toendepi….. Been to Pari… dead bodies everywhere of people dying from Covid…. clearly the health institution is overwhelmed…. Mwari pindirai!!!</blockquote>
A similar report was given by doctors who spoke to Aljazeera and said Parirentatwa has<a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/01/06/parirenyatwa-s-covid-19-unit-has-3-icu-beds-people-are-dying-because-no-one-is-volunteering-to-work-there-report/"> 3 ICU beds and key health staff were not volunteering to work in the COVID-19 unit</a> at the hospital because of lack of equipment and PPE.
The Information Ministry permanent secretary said hospitals are overwhelmed with patients as he urged people to adhere to COVID-19 restriction measures.

"Dead Bodies Are Lying Everywhere At Parirenyatwa" - Former Deputy Finance Minister On COVID-19

Parirenyatwa Group Of Hospitals has revealed that 13 bodies that were brought to the hospital between 9 June and 25 July for postmortem tested positive for the virus. This was contained in a statement that was released by the Hospital on Twitter which reads in part:
<blockquote>We have recorded 8 deaths out of the 60 patients who were admitted in the red zone. Of the bodies that were brought in dead, 13 tested positive for Covid-19.</blockquote>

13 Bodies Taken To Parirenyatwa For Postmortem Test Positive For COVID-19 Posthumously

Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals is facing a shortage of bedding which has resulted in some admitted patients going home without treatment or spending days sleeping in corridors.
The crisis has been compounded by the emergency of the coronavirus which has forced the government to divert resources towards the refurbishment of part of the hospital into a COVID-19 emergency facility.
Parirenyatwa has been receiving an increasing number of people in need of medical attention, more so with the closure of Westend Hospital’s casualty units following the outbreak of Covid-19.
A patient at Parirenyatwa Hospital who spoke to Business Times on anonymity over fears of victimisation had this to say:
<blockquote>The situation is sad because I was admitted on Sunday but has been sleeping in the corridors because the hospital has run out of beds. Parirenyatwa chief executive Ernest Munyawu recently told legislators that the hospital has 1 200 beds, adding that under normal circumstances, there would be a 90% to 100% occupancy rate.
Munyawu also revealed that the hospital did 14,405 theatre operations in 2018, but these dropped to 7,107 in 2019. The hospital also had 50,553 persons on casualty in 2018, but in 2019, it recorded 46,025. For outpatients, the hospital had 121,765 in 2018, but in 2019, the figure dropped to 94 693.
Parirenyatwa hospital was named after nationalist politician Dr Tichafa Parirenyatwa who was Zimbabwe’s first black medical doctor.
It was formerly called Andrew Fleming Hospital and was named after the principal medical officer to the British South Africa Company.

Parirenyatwa Group Of Hospitals Overwhelmed

The Zimbabwe anti-graft body has set its sights on a former Parirenyatwa pharmacist Russel Tatenda Mweye who reportedly manipulated the tender process and awarded a tender to his company, Daily News reports.
According to the publication:

<div dir="ltr">March 2016, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals flighted a tender requesting bids for the supply and delivery of medical sutures. The tender committee carried out due process and awarded the tender to Flancon Investments (Private) Limited citing that the company was the cheapest bidder after it charged US$37 844,60.</div>

<div dir="ltr">According to court papers, order forms were raised by the procurement department and forwarded to Mwenye for recommendation before it was to be forwarded to the chief pharmacist for approval. 
Mutangadura further said that Mwenye then assigned his subordinate, Yvonne Mudimu, to purchase the medical sutures from Silksilver Investments (Private) Limited, a company he had interest in.</div>

<div dir="ltr">The company had participated in the tender process but had failed to meet the requirements. 
The company supplied the order but charged US$86 381,88. Mutangadura said Mwenye abused his duty, leading to the hospital being prejudiced US$48 537,28. He said after the money was transferred into Silksilver Investments’ bank account, part of it was transferred for Mwenye’s benefit.</div>

<div dir="ltr">According to court papers, part of the money, amounting to US$15 608, was used to purchase Mwenye and Vera’s residential stand in Mabvazuva Township, Ruwa.  After the offence was unearthed, Mwenye was sacked from employment. It was later discovered that Mwenye was the beneficial owner of Silksilver Investments and that he and Vera were signatories to the company’s bank account.</div>

The Prosecutor General is reportedly seeking permission from the high court to confiscated Mweye’s house.

ZACC Goes After Former Parirenyatwa Pharmacist

Parirenyatwa Hospital CEO Thomas Zigora confirmed that a nurse identified as Taurai Mazarura raped a female patient aged 17, who was hit and injured by a car in Harare’s central business district on the 19th February, leading to her admission for treatment at the hospital.
Mazarura, who had just joined the hospital after close to two years without a job, was caught red handed by another nurse abusing the teenager and ran away. Speaking to reporters on the matter Zigora said:
<blockquote>The matter is now being handled by the Zimbabwe Republic Police after we received a report that Taurai, who is a male nurse, is alleged to have raped a young female patient. This happened in the early hours of February 19th in a cubicle in Ward A1. The matter was immediately reported to the police who are in the process of conducting investigations. We don’t want this to happen again to patients. We will take stern disciplinary action on the nurse and, in the meantime, the patient is receiving appropriate medical care and counselling. The behaviour of the nurse is highly reprehensible and is not something expected from a health professional.</blockquote>
