Beverages manufacturer, Varun Beverages plans to expand operations in rural Zimbabwe where it will set up solar-powered outlets.
This was revealed by Varun Zimbabwe’s chief executive, Vijay Kumar Bahl while speaking at the Zimbabwe-Rwanda Investment Conference last week. He said:

Varun beverages has plans to set up outlets in rural Zimbabwe with solar panels fixed on them.
These outlets will be distributed free of cost to the poor families to create employment in rural Zimbabwe.
This will be done besides the distribution of additional 1 500 pushcarts by Pepsi, Varun Beverages in the year 2022.

Varun Beverages has already invested over US$85 million in Zimbabwe.
In October last year, the company commissioned a US$12 million water bottling plant at its Harare operation.
Varun Beverages is one of the fastest-growing beverage companies in Zimbabwe since its launch in 2018.
Its Pepsico franchise in Zimbabwe produces a range of products that include Pepsi, Mirinda, Mountain Dew, 7Up and Aquaclear.

Varun Beverages To Expand Operations To Rural Areas

Indian beverages manufacturer, Varun Beverages, has announced a massive expansion strategy on Wednesday, as it commissioned a US$12 million water bottling plant at its Harare operation.
Varun holds the Pepsico franchise in Zimbabwe and produces a range of products that include Pepsi, Mirinda, Mountain Dew and 7Up and Aquaclear.
The firm’s billionaire Indian chairman, Ravi Jaipuria, told NewsDay that the new 400 bottles per minute line brought the firm’s cumulative investment in Zimbabwe to US$66 million.
He said the operation, which produced its first soft drinks in 2018, had been overwhelmed by domestic demand and its present capacity was struggling to satisfy the local market. Said Jaipuria:

We are looking at new avenues of expansion, and we are increasing our exports to Zambia, Malawi and the DRC. That is why you have seen the minister of industry from the DRC is here.
We request the government to allocate an additional ten hectares around Harare because the present space here is no longer enough.
This is now the third phase of our investment carried out by launching the packaged drinking water named Aquaclear.
The production capacity of this line will be 15 million bottles per month.
With this third phase, of investment, the total production capacity will be 66 million bottles of spackling beverages, cans and bottled water per month.
The total investment with the completion of the third phase is almost US$66 million.

PepsiCo Commissions A US$12m Water Bottling Plant In Harare

Workers at Indian-owned Varun Beverages Zimbabwe Limited (VBZL), producers of Pepsi drinks, on Wednesday staged a protest alleging racism, sexual harassment and unfair dismissals at the company.
Individual workers who spoke to NewsDay on condition of anonymity detailed how they are being mistreated by the company. A female had this to say:
<blockquote>There is one lady who got fired when she spoke out after being sexually harassed. As we speak, she can testify for her. Indians are the perpetrators of these crimes and they cover up the cases or dismiss them if they are brought to their attention. The human resources department and some black managers are powerless and remain silent.</blockquote>
A male worker who spoke to the publication claimed that they are not given off days. He said:
<blockquote>We also don’t have off days. They told us to choose a representative to channel our grievances and we chose one, but they terminated his contract. We will not return to work until our representative has been reinstated. There is racism, we are being called names. Vickus Chandra must change or go down.</blockquote>
The company’s employees said in a statement:
<blockquote>The Indians at VBZL are exercising gross human rights violations, several workers are prepared to come forward and testify against a bucket-load of ongoing incidents, especially from managers. It’s disheartening to realise that VBZL has become the architect of economic slavery in Zimbabwe.
… The Indians view themselves as ‘warlords’, using intimidating techniques and extremely abusive language at plant workers and employing autocratic and military-style tactics to run a beverage manufacturing company.
At this rate, if let to go scot-free, a tragic case (similar to the one involving a purported Chinese investor and two Zimbabwean workers) can be experienced at the company.</blockquote>
The protests at the Indian-owned firm come hard on the heels of the shooting of two employees by a Chinese employer in Gweru.
The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union confirmed has condemned the unfair labour practices at VBZL and has warned all investors, be they Chinese, Indians or local, that it is unlawful to practise segregation, exploitation or any unlawful conduct.

Pepsi Workers Speak On 'Sexual Exploitation, Slavery' At The Company

According to the Herald, the Indian Billionaire who is also Varum Beverages Chairman is eyeing Zimbabwe’s prime land to undertake farming.
Ravi Jaipuria reportedly made his request known to the President. The President revealed this while commissioning Varum Beverages’ 20 Million plant last week. The President said:
<blockquote>The chairman says, ‘Can we find land here, agricultural land?’ So I want to make it open so that we leave the ball either in my court or in your court. I am saying we have land; agricultural land belongs to the State.
And I am the Head of State. So, Mr Chairman, I will give you the land you want freely and make it productive. So the ball is your court. My Government will continue to create an enabling environment to ease convenience and cost of doing business, and ensure the country is a safe, attractive and competitive investment destination.</blockquote>

Pepsi International Franchise Holder Ravi Jaipuria Mulls Acquiring Land For Agricultural Purposes In Zimbabwe - Report

An Indian beverages manufacturer, Varun Beverages, said it has directly employed 1 000 local people, while 1 500 women have been empowered financially through the allocation of vending trolleys.
Chairman for Varun Beverages, Ravi Jaipuria, revealed that over and above that, 22 000 families have benefited directly and indirectly from the company. Speaking at the launch of the Pepsi plant in Harare on Friday, Jaipuria said:
<blockquote>There are 1500 women empowered financially by allocating them vending trolleys.
There are 20 000 retailers and vendors who get Pepsi products across Zimbabwe. We are happy that 22 000 families benefited directly and indirectly from Varun beverages.</blockquote>
Varun Beverages manufactures carbonated drinks which include Pepsi, Mirinda (all flavours) Mountain Dew and Seven Up. The products are the most trending and cheaper soft drinks on the market.
In November last year, the company commissioned a manufacturing and bottling plant in Harare to increase production.

Pepsi Benefits 22 000 Zimbabwean Families

Manufacturers of Pepsi soft drinks, Pepsi Zimbabwe, a local unit of Varun Beverages, has increased soft drink wholesale prices from ZWL 89.76 for a case of 24 to ZWL 170.
On Monday, Varun Beverages’ sales agents were notifying retailers of the latest price increase.
Meanwhile, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Confederation_of_Zimbabwe_Retailers" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR)</a> president Denford Mutashu has castigated manufacturers’ tendency to hike prices willy nilly. He said:
<blockquote>The habit of speculative pricing has replaced sanity in most pricing models. The equivalent of the same unit prices of similar brands in other countries will tell you that, sometimes it’s not about costs but defiance.
Some pricing trends by certain manufacturers, suppliers and retail players easily leave trails of sabotaging President Mnangagwa administration and I implore him to take action and protect the public.</blockquote>
Varun Beverages is the largest bottler of PepsiCo products — Pepsi, Mirinda, Mountain Dew and Seven-Up outside the United States.

Price Of Pespi Hiked By Almost 100 Per Cent

After the successful launch of the Pepsi beverages plant by Varun Beverages, PepsiCo is considering opening a snacks plant in Zimbabwe. Speaking at the launch, PepsiCo sub-Sahara African GM vice-president Sarah-Anne Orphanides told NewsDay,
<blockquote>We are looking at how we now take the success we have had in South Africa into other markets. Certainly, with the success we have seen here with the support from Varun, it is a market that we are looking to make sure that we can actually bring those products (chips and snacks) here…I cannot commit at this stage and say that we are going to put up a plant. We are looking at the whole region so we are looking at Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana together and the investment in a snack plant is significant so we are looking at the region.</blockquote>
Currently,  PepsiCo is selling its  Lay’s and Simba chips, through local distributor, the Cold Chain Group.
