The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has extended operating hours at the Plumtree/Ramokgwebana Border Post to 24 hours on specific days to facilitate the free movement of people between Zimbabwe and Botswana during the festive season.
In Public Notice 104 issued on December 20, ZIMRA stated that the extension of operating hours, which began on Sunday, applies to private travellers and does not include commercial traffic. ZIMRA said:

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) advises members of the public who intend to use 
Plumtree/Ramokgwebana Border Post that operating hours have been extended to 24 hours on dates listed below. The extension of operating hours is done to facilitate the movement of the private travellers during the festive period between Zimbabwe and Botswana.

The border post will be open 24 hours from 22 December to 24 December 2024, then on 04 and 05 January 2025.

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Revenue_Authority/">Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA)</a> has said it is taking steps to automate its systems in order to reduce income leaks and corruption. Tax evasion, commercial misinvoicing, and corruption at border posts have led to substantial revenue losses for the taxman.
Manual processes create opportunities for corruption hence the move towards automation, the <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/business/article/200017389/zimra-moves-to-plague-revenue-leakages">Standard</a> reported citing ZIMRA Commissioner <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Regina_Chinamasa/">Regina Chinamasa</a>. Speaking during the annual conference of the Chartered Governance and Accountancy Institute in Zimbabwe on Thursday, Chinamasa said:

We want to ensure that as an organisation we are fully accountable because with manual processes, we are creating opportunities for corruption. So, automation of systems is one of the drivers we are implementing to ensure we optimise revenue collection, our organisation is strengthened and ensure facilitation of trade.
We are putting in place technological initiative intervention to mitigate revenue leakages and we are also looking at the single window which is going to ensure all border stakeholders pay and log in.
This is to enable faster clearance of border processes. We are going to be launching drone projects where we will be doing surveillance at our borders which have been deemed porous and we agree they are porous. This will enhance revenue mobilisation and protection of our civil society.

She added that ZIMRA is preparing to launch a tax revenue management system next month to enhance the strength of its taxation system. The new system will have the ability to interface and integrate with other institutions to streamline data collection and reduce redundancy. Chinamasa believes that this system will be a game changer, benefiting tax consultants and public officers while improving the ease of doing business. Strengthening the institution is seen as crucial for achieving the government’s Vision 2030 and aligning with the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1).
Chinamasa added that ZIMRA is actively seeking feedback from stakeholders to improve client satisfaction and address the concerns faced by taxpayers and accountants. The focus is on providing low-cost services, transparency, and administrative tools that facilitate compliance with fiscal laws.

ZIMRA Taking Steps To Automate Systems And Reduce Leaks - Chinamasa

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has warned stakeholders of anticipated delays at the Plumtree Border Post. In a notice seen by Pindula News, the authority says the anticipated delays can be triggered by the installation of automatic rapid high-speed boom barriers. Reads the notice:

<h2>ANTICIPATED DELAYS AT PLUMTREE BORDER POST DUE TO INSTALLATION OF THE AUTOMATIC RAPID HIGH-SPEED BOOM BARRIER FROM 17th NOVEMBER 2022.</h2>
The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) wishes to advise all travellers, importers, exporters, transporters, clearing agents and the general public of installation of automatic rapid high-speed boom barriers at Plumtree Border Post. The installation is expected to kick off this week and the construction works are likely to affect the border post’s traffic handling capacity and cause some delays in traffic movement. 
There will be staggered closure of both the East and West bound traffic lanes and subsequent reduction of working and parking space. The trading public is advised that the reduction in capacity may result in congestion and delays in the effective passage of traffic, both out and in-bound. The delays are projected to last for two weeks from beginning of the project during which period the installation work is expected to be completed. 
The Authority regrets any inconvenience caused to all our clients transacting through Plumtree Border Post, nonetheless, we believe that this project is necessary as it will go a long way in creating efficient and effective traffic management for all stakeholders. 
In the meantime, stakeholders are encouraged to engage the Authority through the available various communication channels should they encounter challenges during this period. ZIMRA remains committed to minimising delays that may be experienced.

ZIMRA Warns Of Anticipated Delays At Plumtree Border Post

Former first lady Mrs Grace Mugabe’s son Russell Goreraza was yesterday detained for hours at Plumtree Border Post before driving into Botswana on transit to South Africa with three luxury vehicles. Goreraza had a Rolls Royce, a Porsche and a Range Rover which were thoroughly searched and scanned. The Range Rover, with personalised plates and the Porsche with South African registration numbers reportedly belong to Grace while the Rolls Royce, also with personalised plates belongs to Goreraza.
Sources who spoke to The Chronicle said customs officials where under the suspicion that Goreraza, who was in the company of a Tinashe Munatsi and other unidentified people, was using the top of the range vehicles to smuggle cash and other valuables out of Zimbabwe.The suspicion arose when Goreraza opted to go through Botswana instead of using the Beitbridge Border Post to get into South Africa where he said he was taking the cars for servicing.
