The Vatican has released a statement seeking to calm down Catholic bishops in some countries who are opposed to the approval of blessings for same-sex couples. In a statement issued by the Vatican’s doctrinal office on Thursday, it clarified that these blessings are not considered “heretical” or “blasphemous,” <a href="https://www.cbc.ca/news/world/vatican-lgbt-blessings-1.7074077">CBC</a> reported. Evidently, there is no room to distance ourselves doctrinally from this declaration or to consider it heretical, contrary to the Tradition of the Church or blasphemous.
</blockquote>
The Vatican acknowledged that in certain countries, where individuals receiving such blessings may face violence, imprisonment, or even death, it may be unwise to perform them.
Bishops in several countries, particularly in Africa, expressed confusion and varying degrees of disagreement following the declaration, known as Fiducia Supplicans (Supplicating Trust), which was issued on December 18. 
After the original declaration, several Catholic Bishops’ conferences released statements emphasising that the blessings did not constitute an official endorsement of gay sex or the sacrament of marriage for same-sex couples.
The Vatican’s doctrinal office reiterated these points in its recent statement, emphasising that blessings for same-sex couples should not be seen as endorsing their entire lifestyle or actions. The office encouraged a thorough and calm reading of the December 18 declaration to gain a better understanding.

Acting President General (Rtd) Constantino Chiwenga on Thursday, 5 January, signed a book of condolence at the Vatican embassy in Harare for the late former Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
The former head of the Roman Catholic Church died on 31 December 2022 aged 95 years.
Speaking after signing the book of condolences, Chiwenga said the late Pope Benedict will be remembered for his love for humanity. Chiwenga said:

Pope Benedict was known mainly for his two cardinal principles, peace and love for humanity and so we are motivated by that.
I think the rest of what he has done from when he went into the priesthood in Germany, his missionary work right up to when he ended up in Rome at the Vatican and eventually becoming the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church, is well documented and we thank God that he has been given that life up to the age of 95. So it is a long life and we celebrate it.

Born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger of German parents, Pope Benedict passed away almost a decade after he stood down in 2013 because of failing health.
He became the first Pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415. He had reigned for almost eight years.
He spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the walls of the Vatican where he passed away.

Pope Francis has called for prayers and support for the many victims of Cyclone Idai, which has caused widespread destruction and flooding in the southeast African nations of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.
Speaking at the Wednesday General Audience held in St. Peter’s Square, the Pontiff said:
<blockquote>In recent days, great floods have sowed mourning and devastation in various areas of Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi. I express my pain and closeness to those dear people.
I entrust the many victims and their families to the mercy of God, and I implore comfort and support for those affected by this calamity.</blockquote>
