ZESA Holdings Executive Chairman Sydney Gata said that Zimbabwe will be capable of generating 4,000 MW within two years, surpassing the national electricity demand.
Gata made these remarks during the ground-breaking ceremony for the 720MW thermal power plant and 200MW solar project on Monday, December 2, at Tutu Ingagula, located along Chaba Black Road in Hwange. <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zesa-holdings-chairman-declares-end-of-blackout-era/">Said Gata</a>:

Gata said that the 720 MW power plant is part of a broader plan involving 18 projects aimed at collectively adding over 4,000 MW to the national grid.
Gata said that Zimbabwe is currently facing a shortfall of only 600 MW.
Zhou Ding, representing the project’s financial backers from China, confirmed a US$1 billion investment, with the project set for completion by the end of 2028.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to officiate the groundbreaking ceremony for a new power station in Hwange, where a plant capable of generating over 700MW of electricity will be constructed.
The 720MW project is a partnership between Titan New Energy and ZESA Holdings, and Mnangagwa is scheduled to lead the ceremony on Monday, December 2, at Tutu Ingagula, located along Chaba Black Road in Hwange.
In an interview with the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/700mw-power-station-for-matabeleland-north/">Chronicle</a> earlier this week, Matabeleland North Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Richard Moyo said that the project is one of the major agreements secured by President Mnangagwa during his recent visit to China. Said Moyo:

On 2nd December, President Mnangagwa will lead the ground-breaking of the Titan Energy projects, so that construction can begin.
Titan is working in Hwange and has made a joint venture with a company in China after being invited by the President to explore investment opportunities in Zimbabwe.
We thank our President Mnangagwa for his visit to China, where 53 countries met with China’s President.
Zimbabwe is one of the countries that signed investment agreements, and they plan to build an electricity power station that will generate 900MW, plus a 200MW solar system.
This will be a mega station, bigger than Units 7 and 8, and we thank President Mnangagwa for being open for business and inviting investors into Zimbabwe.
We are excited as a province because this creates jobs for our people and boosts the provincial economy.

The construction of the new power plant in Hwange will boost Zimbabwe’s power generation capacity, reducing the country’s reliance on imports and helping to alleviate the ongoing challenges of load-shedding.
This development is expected to provide much-needed relief to households, businesses, and industries that have been grappling with frequent power outages.
Hwange, which hosts some of Zimbabwe’s largest coal reserves, is also home to the country’s biggest power plant.
The Hwange Colliery Company, which operates the region’s oldest coal mine, has proven reserves estimated to last over 1,000 years at the current production rate.

A Chinese company, Prestige Massive (Pvt) Limited, is in the process of constructing a 1,200 MW coal-fired power and chrome smelting plant in Beitbridge.
According to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200029934/beitbridges-mega-power-station-takes-shape">NewsDay</a>, the project is progressing, with abnormal load haulage delivery trucks bringing in equipment from various seaports to the plant site. At least 300 local villagers are currently employed at the ongoing construction site.
The power plant was only publicly discussed two weeks ago at the Matabeleland South Diaspora Conference in Beitbridge.
The power generated from this plant will be fed by Tuli Coal, a mine located approximately 20 kilometres west of Beitbridge, as well as potentially powering other factories that may be established within the designated special economic zone.
According to a report by Global Energy Monitor, the plans for this power and smelting plant were first made public in November 2023, when a proposal to construct, own and operate the facility at the River Ranch area just outside Beitbridge town was advertised. Part of the report reads:

All electricity generated would be supplied to a chrome smelting plant belonging to Xintai Resources, which was proposing a special economic zone in Beitbridge.
Prestige had applied for an electricity generation license with the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority.

A government official speaking to NewsDay on condition of anonymity said a significant amount of funding is being channelled into the project. Said the official:

There is towering infrastructure now seen from a long distance; there is activity on a huge scale. And just recently, there were interviews for skilled posts attended by about 70 hopefuls.
Locals from Beitbridge have been engaged as unskilled labour joining many Chinese nationals on site. There is remarkable activity.
The resuscitation of the [Tuli] coal mine will not be a stand-alone project and so it will feed and power the thermal plant as the second stage with the establishment of the smelting plant becoming the third stage.
What is under construction now is the thermal plant and huge installations, I believe are coolers, are in place.
From the information at hand, there will be ferrochrome and steel production with raw material sourced from mines in Mberengwa, Gwanda and other nearby mines.

Beitbridge town clerk Loud Ramakgapola said the project will bring development in the commercial, retail, and residential sectors in the town.
