The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has reported a rise in the number of pregnant women from Zimbabwe illegally crossing the border to access social grants for their children.
Major Shihlangoma Mahlahlane, speaking to the media last week, revealed that there is an increase in pregnant women entering the country so they can register their children as South African citizens.
To tackle this issue, the SANDF’s Operation Corona conducted night patrols on Thursday aimed at curbing illegal immigration.
Mahlahlane said that many of these crossings occur after dark to evade detection, with some illegal immigrants resorting to bribing officials to gain entry.
He attributed the surge in border crossings to the high cost of living and widespread unemployment in neighbouring countries, which have left many people, particularly pregnant women, desperate to seek a better life in South Africa. Pregnant females cross into South Africa and, after giving birth in the South African hospital, they will try to register their child as South African to obtain the child grant.
</blockquote>
During a tactical operation in Musina on Thursday night, the SANDF apprehended two women along with a minor.
According to the SANDF, the mother of the child fled, leaving the child behind with one of the women.
Although both women were South African citizens, they were caught crossing the border illegally. The military police handed the case over to law enforcement for further processing.
Major Mahlahlane added that many foreigners are so desperate to live in South Africa that, even after being deported, they attempt to cross the border repeatedly until they are successful.

Pregnant Zimbabwean Women Flock To South Africa For Births And Child Grants

The National Institute of Health Research has warned pregnant women against eating soil due to the risk of infection, reported <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/pregnant-women-warned-against-eating-soil/">H-Metro</a>.
Professor Nicholas Midzi cautioned that soil may contain roundworms, hookworms and whipworms, collectively known as Soil Transmitted Helminths (STH), which are dangerous for pregnant women and unborn babies.
He said Zimbabwe is seeking to eradicate the risk of STH by 2030.
According to a baseline survey conducted in 2010, 5.5 percent of the population was infected by STH.
The figure fell to 0.7 percent in 2018 following targeted interventions, but the rose to 1.9 percent in 2021 due to disruptions caused by COVID-19. Said Prof Midzi:

Currently, Manicaland is the highest-burdened province with a 4.4 percent prevalence while at baseline in 2010 Mashonaland East recorded the highest prevalence of 18.3 percent.
For infected girls and women of reproductive age, blood loss exacerbates iron deficiency anaemia and increases the risk of maternal and infant mortality and low birth weight.
Infected children are nutritionally and physically impaired.

He said in order to control the infections, Zimbabwe has over the years conducted periodic deworming to eliminate infecting worms using albendazole and mebendazole.
Healthcare professionals believe that pregnant women’s craving for soil is caused by hormone changes and iron deficiency.

Pregnant Women Warned Against Eating Soil

An inquest at Reading Coroner’s Court (UK) heard that a Zimbabwean pregnant nurse, Stabile Sibanda, bled to death at home more than four hours after calling for an ambulance.
Sibanda had called 999 at 1:11 AM on July 23, 2020, to report abdominal pain and suspected an ectopic pregnancy, The Mirror reported. However, the South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) was too busy and dealing with high levels of post-COVID staff sickness due to poor mental health.
A private ambulance service, Phoenix, was then called, but the crew dispatched did not include a trained paramedic. Phoenix technicians, Kara Mathieson and Lee Brown, arrived at Sibanda’s home in Ascot, Berkshire, two hours after the initial call at 3:11 AM. They could not locate her first-floor flat until 27 minutes later. Ms Sibanda bled to death at her home, and the Phoenix crew called the police at 4:36 AM for assistance in getting her into the ambulance. However, she suffered a haemorrhage and was declared dead at 5:33 AM.
The Berkshire Coroner Heidi Connor concluded that Ms Sibanda died of natural causes and that the delays did not cause or contribute to her death.  She said:
<blockquote>
Sometimes we think about events, particularly stressful events and think about what we wish we had done. There are however stark differences in their statements.
‌I find it likely that first crew were told by Ms Sibanda that she was having an ectopic pregnancy. The first crew remained blindsided by her difficult presentation and made assumptions about the likely cause.
‌If they had been considering ectopic pregnancy, that would have focussed their minds more on getting her to hospital.
</blockquote>
During the inquest at Reading Coroner’s Court, Mrs Connor raised concerns about the defensive approach taken by the clinical governance lead at Phoenix, who claimed that there were no significant learning points from Stabile Sibanda’s death. She highlighted that those involved in contracting private providers should consider whether they are confident in the approach to learning taken by Phoenix.
The coroner noted that Ms Sibanda lived within a 20-minute drive from the nearest hospital, but she would have required quick surgery after reporting her condition. Therefore, the delays did not cause or contribute to her death, which was deemed to be due to natural causes.
Ms Sibanda had recently migrated to the UK from Zimbabwe to work as a nurse.

Zimbabwean Pregnant Nurse Bleeds To Death After Ambulance Delay In UK

The Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday, upheld the rights of all breastfeeding mothers and pregnant women, as well as children under six, to be provided with free health services at public hospitals, reported <a href="https://www.sowetanlive.co.za/news/south-africa/2023-04-19-gauteng-health-department-studying-court-order-on-free-healthcare-for-migrant-mothers/">SowetanLive</a>.
The court said these rights are included for foreign and undocumented patients.
The order follows a court application brought in May 2022 by the public interest law centre Section27, in response to complaints by pregnant women and mothers of young children who have been required to pay fees to access healthcare services at public hospitals in Gauteng.
Section27, said it welcomed the High Court’s decision. It said the court ordered that the policy introduced by the Gauteng Department of Health in 2020, which denied free healthcare services to foreign pregnant women and young children, was now declared illegal.
Section27 also said the Gauteng Department of Health was also ordered to amend its policy by 16 October 2023. Section27 spokesperson Pearl Nicodemus said:

The court order vindicates constitutional rights, specifically women’s sexual and reproductive health rights and children’s right to health.
These health rights are promoted when we prioritise combating maternal and child morbidity and mortality by increasing access to free healthcare services for all persons.
</blockquote>
Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said they will comment after they had gone through the ruling:

The Gauteng Department of Health takes note of the court ruling and is currently going through the judgment and its implications. We will comment further on it in due course.

In 2022, Limpopo Provincial MEC for Health, Dr Phophi Constance Ramathuba, was filmed ranting at a Zimbabwean patient saying she was straining her health budget.
Meanwhile, Nicodemus said the court ruling reduces the financial barriers that vulnerable women and children face when trying to access care in South Africa. He said:
<blockquote>
Government respondents failed to respond to the litigation, other than filing a notice of intention to oppose in July 2022.
Regrettably, as we know, many categories of migrant persons [mainly asylum seekers, undocumented, and persons affected by statelessness] were being denied these free health services.
By affirming that these free health services must be provided, it reduces the financial barriers that vulnerable women and children face when trying to access care.
</blockquote>
South Africa is home to millions of migrants, some undocumented, from other African countries and this has bred resentment among locals which has often degenerated into xenophobia.
