Local economic commentators say the end of year closure of the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) foreign exchange auction for close to a month will not affect the market as most companies do not depend on the auction for their forex needs.
The RBZ on Monday announced that it was closing its weekly foreign exchange auction until 9 January 2023.
Speaking to NewsDay, economic commentator Gift Mugano said the closure of the RBZ auction will have no effect on the market. Mugano said:

Mainstream imports by businesses are coming from companies’ own foreign currency generation at various levels.
Because of the dollarisation, companies are generating their own foreign currency through sales, they are self-sustaining.
In my view, I don’t see any effects of the closure of the auction system.
</blockquote>
Another economic analyst Prosper Chitambara also told NewsDay that the closure of the platform will have no effect as most businesses will be on holiday. He said:

It is not going to affect the market much as most actors in the economy are going to close for the holiday, so I think the time will coincide with annual shutdowns by most businesses.

"Closure Of RBZ Forex Auction Inconsequential"

The value of the Zimbabwe dollar has depreciated slightly against the US dollar according to the results of the official foreign currency auction conducted by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> today, 25 October 2022. The weighted average rate has moved to US$1: ZWL$634.2539.
<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/rbz-forex-auction-zimbabwe-dollar-official-rate-as-of-18-october-2022/">Last week</a>, the foreign exchange weighted average rate was US$1: ZWL$632.1371.
In an update seen by Pindula News, this week the central bank reported a total of US$11,496,730.86, done, up from US$10,600,227.09 thatwas allotted to various sectors at last week’s RBZ foreign currency auction.
The bulk of the allotment went to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment, the same as last week.
The total amount allotted for the Small to Medium Enterprises Forex Auction (SMEFX111/2022) was  US$1,121,380.58 up from USD1,062,029.45allotted last week.
The total amount allotted on the Main Forex Auction (MAIN FX117/2022) was US$10,375,350.28 down from US$USD10,637,610.97allotted last week.

RBZ Forex Auction: Zimbabwe Dollar Official Rate As Of 01 November 2022

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has revealed the Foreign Exchange Auction Allotments for August 2022 and Foreign Exchange Payments for the period January to August 2022.
In a statement, RBZ governor John Mangudya said that details about the allotments have been released to ensure that the public is informed of developments in the foreign exchange market. Part of the statement reads:

In line with the Bank’s commitment to regularly keep the public informed of developments in the foreign exchange market, the Bank hereby publishes the following:
1. A list of the 352 beneficiaries of US$74 818 220 allotted under the Main Foreign Exchange Auction during the month of August 2022;
2. A list of the 1 154 beneficiaries of US$15 996 378 allotted under the SMEs Foreign
Exchange Auction during the month of August 2022; and
3. A schedule showing the total foreign exchange payments for the period January 2022 to August 2022, by source, amounting to US$5 306 865 010 broken down as follows: –
(i) foreign currency accounts (US$4 267 521 501),
(ii) Foreign Exchange Auction Allotments (US$925 501 215); and
(iii) the interbank market (US$113 842 293).
The bulk of the auction allotments during the month of August 2022 (71%) was for payment for raw materials (US$42 118 094) and machinery and equipment (US$22 343 924), with the remaining 29% of the total allotments going towards payment for services (US$9 345 489), consumables (US$7 913 708), retail and distribution (US$5 050 610), pharmaceuticals and chemicals (US$2 557 581), packaging (US$1 459 452) and fuel, electricity and gas (US$25 740), as shown in the tables below.

RBZ Foreign Exchange Payments For January To August 2022 | Full Statement

The Zimbabwe dollar has continued its downward spiral against the US dollar. According to the results of the official foreign currency auction conducted by the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> today, 20 September 2022, the weighted average rate has fallen to US$1: ZWL$613.3681.
Last week, the foreign exchange weighted average rate was US$1: ZWL$604.2580.
In an update seen by Pindula News, the central bank reported that a total of US$13.66 millionwas allotted to various sectors at this week’s RBZ foreign currency auction.
The bulk of the allotment went to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment, the same as last week.
245 bids were received on the Small to Medium Enterprises Forex Auction, with 230 accepted and 15 disqualified. The total amount allotted was USD2,099,695.45 down from the USD2,196,092.29 allotted last week.
On the Main Forex Auction, a total of 103 bids were received, 100 were accepted and 3 were disqualified. The total amount allotted was USD11,562,566.29 down from USD13,429,628.61 allotted last week.

In total, US$46.7 million was allotted this week, up from US$34 million allotted last week, with the bulk of the allotment going to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment.
546 bids were received on the Small to Medium enterprises forex auction, with 521 accepted and 25 disqualified.
On the main forex auction, a total of 451 bids were received, 397 were accepted while 54 were disqualified.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> said bids that were disqualified were not eligible in terms of the Priority List.
Bids with overdue CDIs, outstanding Bills of Entry (BOEs), and those with sufficient FCA balances were also disqualified.

Forex Auction: Zimbabwe Dollar Sheds Value Against USD

Results from the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a>’s Tuesday foreign exchange auction show that the Zimbabwe dollar continues to weaken against the United States Dollar (USD).
The Zimbabwe dollar continues to weaken against the USD amid increased demand for the greenback following the reopening of the economy after putting it under a COVID-19-induced lockdown.
Results from the Tuesday, 18 May 2021 <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Foreign_Exchange_Auction_System">RBZ forex auction</a> show that the weighted average fell slightly from US$1:ZWL$84.6140 last week to US$1: 6494 this week.
This week US$6.2 million was allocated to the Small to Medium Enterprises forex auction while US$36.4 million was allocated to the main forex auction.
In total, US$43 million was allotted this week, with the bulk of the allotment going to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment.
445 bids were received on the Small to Medium enterprises forex auction, with 401 accepted and 44 disqualified.
On the main forex auction, a total of 370 bids were received, 330 were accepted while 40 were disqualified.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> said bids that were disqualified were not eligible in terms of the Priority List.
Bids with overdue CDIs, outstanding Bills of Entry (BOEs), and those with sufficient FCA balances were also disqualified.
Some bids were allotted on a pro-rata basis to conform with the Import Priority List, the RBZ said.

RBZ Forex Auction: Zimbabwe Dollar Weaken Further Against USD

The Zimbabwe dollar has marginally lost ground against the US dollar according to results from the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a>’s foreign exchange auction.
Results from the Tuesday, 04 May 2021 <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Foreign_Exchange_Auction_System">RBZ forex auction</a> show that the weighted average fell slightly from US$1: ZWL$84.5032 last week to US$1:ZWL$84.5282 this week.
This week US$4.5 million was allocated to the Small to Medium Enterprises forex auction while US$32.9 million was allocated to the main forex auction.
In total, US$37.4 million was allotted this week, with the bulk of the allotment (US$12.7 million) going to raw materials followed by machinery and equipment (US$7.8 million).
328 bids were received on the Small to Medium enterprises forex auction, with 298 accepted and 30 disqualified.
On the main forex auction, a total of 328 bids were received, 281 were accepted while 47 were disqualified.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Reserve_Bank_of_Zimbabwe">The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)</a> said bids that were disqualified were not eligible in terms of the Priority List.

RBZ Forex Auction: Zimbabwe Dollar Drops Against USD

The Zimbabwe dollar marginally lost ground to the United States dollar in Tuesday’s weekly forex auction, after trading at $81.81 against US$1 weakening by $0.14 from the premium of $81.67 recorded last week.
The official exchange rate has sustained stability for over two months as the premiums continue to hover around $81.
Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) allotments to industry Tuesday rose, further-reaching a new high of US$32.9 million coupled with the official exchange rate stability.
The auction first reached the peak in September this year after allotting US$31.6 million to industry.
In total, the main auction received US$30.6 million while the SMEs auction received a total of US$2.2 million.
