Robert Chapman, a United States-based politician and leader of the Democratic Union of Zimbabwe, has announced his withdrawal from the 2023 Presidential election. Chapman expressed gratitude to those who supported his campaign for an alternative option to Zimbabwe’s political landscape. He cited financial constraints, the limited time before voting day, and concerns about possible fractionalisation and infiltration as reasons for his withdrawal. He said:

I would like to personally thank all those who worked hard and remained true to our cause for an alternative option to the political landscape of Zimbabwe.
As I and we all reflect on this moment, the tough lessons allow the opportunity to build back better and wiser. I look forward to campaigning on the ground with all our successfully nominated candidates and remain committed to improving the dialogue about building a better Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe elections, which will elect a President, House of Assembly Members, and Councilors, are scheduled for August 23, 2023. A number of aspiring candidates were unable to register for the upcoming elections due to the high fees charged by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC). The fees for presidential candidates are US$20,000, while those contesting for National Assembly seats are charged US$1,000.

Chapman Withdraws From 2023 Zimbabwe Presidential Race

The leader of the opposition Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ) Robert Chapman has claimed that ZANU PF and CCC leaders “seat and eat at the same table” and take Zimbabweans who vote for them for granted.
Chapman made the remarks while addressing journalists on the sidelines of a meeting with party members in Dangamvura, Mutare on Saturday.
He said ZANU PF and CCC leaders were too close to each other and don’t care about the welfare of Zimbabweans. Said Chapman:

There was great opportunity and light at the end of the tunnel when we had the GNU (Government of National Unity).
We started seeing Zimbabwe becoming more prosperous and things started to change. 
Unfortunately, those folks that were in the GNU are still part of the system right now.
They sit and eat at the same table. They were even given US$40 000 (housing loans) each.
Those people own companies together, they represent each other in their business and lawyers from the opposition are representing companies owned by officials from the ruling party founded fraudulently.
If you have a councillor or an MP and the system has not been working for you for a long period in your area, then it is high time you removed them from office.
Why would you vote for a person who has been in power for a long period but without bringing development, then why should we continue voting for those people?

Chapman warned Zimbabweans that it would be another wasted five years if they vote for ZANU PF in the upcoming general elections.
Zimbabwe is set to hold harmonised general election [presidential, parliamentary and local authority] on 23 August 2023.

ZANU PF, CCC Leaders Seat And Eat Together - Chapman

The leader of the opposition Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ), party Robert Howard Chapman, believes that people who are eligible to vote but would rather not exercise their right, are more than those who support either ZANU PF or CCC.
Speaking on the programme “<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/opinion-analysis/article/200008510/the-man-who-will-capitalise-on-voter-apathy">In Conversation with Trevor</a>“, Chapman said his party wishes to capitalise on the voter apathy that has characterised recent elections where voter turnout has reportedly been about 35%. He said:

We looked at data to say would it be favourable if I ran, would people accept that? Then the second side of it was to also look and say was there a window for us to participate.
There was an opportunity for acceptance, and then the bigger tell-tale sign was this data showed that there was huge voter apathy. In fact, that group was larger than each of the parties individually.

Chapman believes the majority of Zimbabweans don’t vote mainly because they just don’t see a candidate who would change their lives.
Since the year 2000, Zimbabwean politics have been dominated by two parties, ZANU PF and MDC which has changed names to MDC-T, MDC Alliance, and now CCC.

Chapman Says He Wants To Capitalise On "Voter Apathy"

The leader of the opposition Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ) party, Robert Chapman is reportedly failing to pay maintenance for his children with his ex-wife.
Chapman, who spent most of his adult life in the United States of America, divorced his first wife in December 2010.
According to <a href="https://cite.org.zw/chapman-accused-of-not-paying-maintenance/">CITE</a>, the Chinhoyi-born presidential aspirant was ordered to pay $500 a month in child support by the Catoosa County Superior court in Georgia, United States of America.
After he reportedly failed to abide by the court ruling and defaulted in paying child support, his former wife dragged him to court in 2014.
An order by Judge Brian House of the Catoosa County Superior Court reads in part:

…Robert Howard Chapman does not pay $500 per month toward said child support arrears until paid in full, upon affidavit of Plaintiff, the Defendant shall be confined to the common jail of Catoosa County for his wilful failure and refusal to abide by the lawful order of this Court until the remaining arrears are paid in full.
It is further ordered, adjudged, and decreed that the defendant shall continue to pay the sum of $873 per month as current support, in addition to the purge amount of $500 per month.

Reached out for a comment on the matter, DUZ said Chapman will not respond to the allegations levelled against him. The party said:

The president will not be responding to allegations levelled against him as the Case is public and is set to expose his children’s names.
It is our hope that the Zimbabweans will put the children first. We suspect it is an ex-wife’s way of attacking President Chapman as we have noticed through various social media accounts.
We can tell these documents in circulation were not downloaded but sent via a Photo.
This is a result of a jealous and disgruntled ex-wife who has been seeking attention to discrediting the President as he pursues a public office.
However, the President will not be distracted by these events as his focus is to bring change to Zimbabwe.

Robert Chapman Accused Of Defaulting On Child Maintenance

The leader of the opposition Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ) party, Robert Chapman has distanced himself from ZANU PF after his critics claimed he is a surrogate of the ruling party.
Supporters of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa allege that Chapman was sent by ZANU PF to split the opposition vote and give the ruling party an advantage in the upcoming general elections.
But speaking on the online platform “In Conversation with Trevor” this week, Chapman said his goal is to remove ZANU PF from power. He said:

I am not paid for by ZANU PF or any foreign entity. I have come from a very comfortable lifestyle, a life where I could have just stayed in the shadows.
I love the private sector because you can succeed and fail privately. For me to expose my family and myself this way was a personal decision.
I do not think there is enough money that someone could pay me to do what I am doing and going through.
My goal is to remove ZANU PF. I want to make that extremely clear that they would not pay me to do that. They would not pay me to get anywhere near that realm.
The other side of it is that there are individuals who are sanctioned by the United States inside the ZANU PF government, and I don’t think I will be smart enough to align myself there and participate in that election at the risk of also being put on the sanctions list.

Chapman, a Zimbabwean of mixed race, said the majority of Zimbabweans have become apathetic toward electoral processes and he intends to galvanise that segment of the population to win the 2023 presidential election.
He said his party will be able to field candidates in all parliamentary and council seats.

I Am Not Paid By ZANU PF, Says Robert Chapman

Norton MP Temba Mliswa (Independent), has criticised what he considers political opportunists who come from nowhere just before elections, saying they take the electorate for granted.
Mliswa claimed that Zimbabwe’s political arena “has become a field of dull people” who really do not care about the welfare of the people.
The former ZANU PF Mashonaland West chairman identified Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ) leader, Robert Chapman and the former leader of the Alliance for People’s Agenda (APA) Nkosana Moyo as some of the politicians who emerged out of nowhere with nothing to offer. It’s unfortunate for us as a country when clowns continuously emerge from bushes on the eve of elections and start showering the public with effervescent nonsense about what they will do when they win.
Do these people understand that politics is about people’s lives?

It’s all a game to them they have no serious regard for the interests of the people. But as happens in anything, a clown will also get followers.

Dr Nkosana Moyo had a mile better political portfolio and emerged just like this. How did he perform?
It shows the futility of such middle-aged expeditions. It’s a waste of time, people’s hopes, and an obscene ridicule of the efforts of all those in the trenches for long.
Politics isn’t a circus. Of course, you can be a clown &amp; have an audience of your own happy clappers.
It’s like POLAD. Filled with Chapmans. What has it achieved? Zilch. It’s a waste of taxpayers’ money.
They have abused their democratic right to be a burden on the whole nation.

Robert Chapman Is A Clown, Says Mliswa

Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ) leader, Robert Chapman, says he has rejected several invitations to join the Nelson Chamisa-led Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).
Chapman, who was born in Chinhoyi, and says he was orphaned at a young age, recently announced his intentions to contest in the 2023 presidential election.
After Chapman announced that he was running for president because people are “tired of living in poverty and that prosperity is possible,” David Coltart, a senior CCC official suggested that Chapman should join the Chamisa-led party. Said Coltart:

At the outset, I wish to affirm your Constitutional right to stand for President.
My only questions, Sir, are: One – Do you realise that all you are going to do is divide those opposed to ZANU PF, which benefits ZANU PF and no one else? Two – Why not rather join and strengthen CCC?

In response, Chapman claimed he already tried to join the CCC but was informed that he will not have any policymaking role. He said:

Already tried and was told I would be given “goat skinning” duties. Seriously, I was actually told this, lol. See you on the campaign trail!
</blockquote>
Chapman added that it would have been ideal for Coltart to reach out to him directly than on social media. He said:

Hello Honourable, thank you for the note. Your questions are valid but possibly should be addressed internally in your organisation. What you are asking I’ve answered.
Internal dialogue in your organisation may be centred around toxicity, fighting, corruption within and elitism.
Matching ideologies would be addressed. As a seasoned politician, I would have hoped you could have reached out directly/back channelled.
However, maybe the comments shed a moment of reflection for the organisation to attract people including alliances. Stay well and blessed.

United States of America-based academic, Chipo Dendere then joined the two politicians’ exchange on Twitter. She said:

As you said it’s his right to run. It’s up to CCC to show why he is not the right candidate. If there is concern that he will split the vote then CCC must do more work for the voters likely to pivot to him.
It means those voters need something that CCC isn’t giving.

Another Twitter user, Cathie Marise, said Coltart should join DUZ and not ask Chapman to join CCC, saying “Last I checked CCC has no structures thus one can’t exactly join, you just follow”.
Businessman Kuda Musasiwa claimed CCC officials with a sense of entitlement will not accept Chapman. He said:

Robert Chapman Rejects CCC's 'Goat Skinning Duties'

The Alliance for the People’s Agenda (APA) has endorsed Robert Chapman, of the Democratic Union of Zimbabwe (DUZ) as the Presidential Candidate for the 2023 general elections following the departure of its founding president Nkosana Moyo.
In a statement issued on 14 December 2022, APA said it cannot in good conscience form an alliance with either ZANU PF, MDC, or CCC, because they do not share the same values of meritocracy-based politics. It said:

… we cannot in all conscience support either ZANU PF or the MDC in its various guises, including that of CCC.
Both parties have consistently displayed a culture of violence, intolerance towards those who might challenge the top leadership, misogyny and a lack of depth in finding practical solutions to the self-inflicted challenges that face our country.
The latest stampede for $40 000 “loans” should have convinced even the most ardent of their supporters that current politicians have a self-serving agenda to join the system.

APA said the decision to back Chapman follows several meetings between officials from both parties. The party said:

We have, however, held several meetings with Robert Chapman, of the Democratic Union of Zimbabwe, over several months and have found a common cause in core values and competence.
APA is, therefore, happy to endorse him as the Presidential Candidate for 2023. We call upon our members and all those Zimbabweans who believe, understand and support our message to engage with the messaging from and vote for Robert Chapman for President.
In a sense, we are passing the baton from Dr Nkosana Moyo the democrat and technocrat to Robert Chapman, the democrat and technocrat. We also encourage our supporters to vote APA where APA fields its own candidates for parliament.
