Two policemen from Harare, Sergeant James Chifamba (46) and Constable Trymore Mukunza (36), were suspended from duty after being captured on camera allegedly accepting bribes from motorists.
The police are investigating not only the two officers but also motorists and commuter omnibus (kombi) crews who are suspected of offering the bribes.
Chifamba and Mukunza were charged with criminal abuse of office as public officers and appeared in court before Harare Magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa. They were remanded in custody.
Last week, a kombi driver, Tinashe Madzima, and a conductor, Ishamel Gonyora, were arrested after being seen in the video offering bribes to the policemen. Two commuter omnibuses were also impounded.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said that they are continuing to identify other suspects involved in the bribery scheme, and further arrests may follow. He said:

The Police are also pursuing other suspects who are implicated in this incident. The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges motorists to refrain from offering bribes to police officers as swift action will be taken against them for justice to prevail.
The public is implored to report incidents of bribery or corruption on National Complaints Desk number (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp on 0712 800 197 or report at any nearest police station.

Two Policemen Suspended After Viral Bribery Video Emerges

Police have confirmed the arrest of two officers caught in a viral video taking bribes from motorists on the Harare-Mutare Road near the Mabvuku turn-off.
The video, which lasts over five minutes, was recorded by a motorist on Saturday, November 2, and has since gone viral.
In a statement released on Sunday, November 3, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests of Sergeant Chifamba and Constable Gunzva, saying they are facing both disciplinary and criminal charges. Reads the statement:

Reference is made to the viral social media post which clearly showed two police officers on a Zimbabwe Republic Police motorbike taking bribes from pirate kombis, taxis and registered public service vehicles along Harare-Mutare Road, Mabvuku turn-off.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police informs the public that Sergeant Chifamba and Constable Gunzva have been arrested and are now in detention.
They are facing both disciplinary and criminal charges. These are bad apples who do not deserve to be serving in the Police Service.
The Commissioner-General of Police does not condone corruption by any police officer and will ensure that the law takes its course without fear or favour.

Two police officers were caught on camera taking bribes from drivers at Mabvuku in Zimbabwe. The video was shared on social media and went viral. The officers, Sergeant Chifamba and Constable Gunzva, have been arrested and are facing punishment. The police commissioner says corruption will not be tolerated in the police force. The officers are in trouble for taking money from kombis, taxis, and other vehicles. They are going to face punishment for their actions.

Mabvuku Turn-off Bribe-taking Police Officers Arrested

Three police officers, Admore Nyamaropa (32), Andrew Magwenzi (35) and Prince Mugove Kuchekenya (39), who are stationed in Beitbridge were convicted and sentenced by a Harare Magistrate on robbery charges.
The brief facts of the case, as outlined by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), are that on 17 April 2023, Timothy Murasiranwa who is employed by the National Employment Council for the Tourism Industry of Zimbabwe was at Beitbridge Border Post where he collected a silver Land Cruiser Prado on behalf of his employer.
Murasiranwa intended to drive the motor vehicle to Harare and he was in the company of his brother who was driving a Toyota Rav 4.
He drove the Land Cruiser to Puma Service Station whilst his brother followed him and they intended to refuel both vehicles. Said the NPA:

Whilst parked at the service station, a silver Toyota Corolla without registration plates approached and parked parallel to the complainant’s motor vehicle.
Two of the accused persons disembarked from the motor vehicle and started walking towards the complainant. One of the accused persons had a pistol underneath his shirt.
Upon noticing the pistol the complainant drove off but he was blocked at one of the garage’s exit points by the accused’s Toyota Corolla.
The two accused persons walked towards the Toyota Corolla where they pulled out a rifle. Upon seeing the rifle the complainant drove to the back of the garage hoping to find another exit but he found the road closed.
The accused persons followed the complainant to the back of the garage.
When the complainant’s brother noticed that the complainant was being followed by armed men he also drove to the back of the garage.
The complainant quickly jumped into his brother’s car, leaving the Prado behind and they sped off from the scene. The accused persons drove off in the Prado.

Murasiranwa reported the matter to the police and investigations led to the recovery of the stolen motor vehicle on 01 May 2023 from a mechanic leading to Nyamaropa’s arrest. He then implicated Magwenzi and Kuchekenya.
Nyamaropa was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment of which 4 years were suspended. Magwenzi and Kuchekenya were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each of which 2 years were suspended.

Three Police Officers Jailed For Armed Robbery

Two female police officers stationed at Chinhoyi Police Station were recently arraigned before the Chinhoyi Magistrates’ Court facing corruption charges after they allegedly solicited a bribe from a suspect who was due to appear in court.
It is alleged that on 02 February 2024, Sergeant Theoline Mapako and Constable Gracious Hove solicited a US$100 bribe from Thandeka Chitombo who had been arrested for impersonating a state official (CIO).
The bribe was to ensure that Chitombo gets bail.
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Chitombo advised the police officers that she only had US$32.
They told her that they had already made an arrangement with her father and he had promised to give them US$50.
When Chitombo was given US$50 by her father, the police officers took her to the ladies’ toilets on the court premises where she handed over US$80 as bribe money.
After the transaction, the police officers escorted her to court where she was remanded in custody as the Prosecutor opposed bail.
The matter came to light when Chitombo was denied bail and she reported the issue to the prison officers who then alerted the police.
Mapako and Hove will appear before a magistrate on 19 March for trial.

Two Female Police Officers Receive A Bribe Inside A Court Building

A police officer who was stationed at Nkulumane Police Station in Bulawayo allegedly sent a gang of four robbers to rob his best friend.
<a href="https://bmetro.co.zw/betrayal-cop-sent-robbers-to-raid-best-friend/">B-Metro</a> reported that businessman Never Sarukore who was recently robbed at gunpoint, later discovered that his friend, Detective Constable Wellington Ndoro was the mastermind of the robbery.
In that robbery which took place at his home in Nkulumane suburb, Sarukore was robbed of US$5 300 and R14 000.
Ndoro was arrested in Victoria Falls during the Festive Season and is now being charged with several armed robberies that he allegedly masterminded in and around Bulawayo.
He had gone to the resort town with his gang on an armed robbery mission with a list of targets when he was arrested.
Ndoro allegedly supplied information to his accomplices and transported them under the cover of darkness to rob his friend Sarukore.
Speaking to B-Metro, Ndoro said even when detectives from the police’s homicide section asked him who he suspected, Ndoro’s name never crossed his mind. He said:

I never suspected Ndoro because to me he was a friend who would protect me.
</blockquote>
Sarukore narrated the sequence of events on the night when the armed robbers raided his home. He said:
<blockquote>
When I was sleeping at home with my family four robbers who were armed with a pistol, bolt-cutter, and tyre lever used the tools to open the door and entered through the sitting room and walked straight to my bedroom.
When I heard footsteps we woke up, one of the robbers pointed a gun at me and demanded US$20 000.
I told them that I do not have such an amount of money but they said they were told that I have it.
They looked scary. One was hooded while the other had bloodshot eyes and scars on his face.
They threatened to shoot me dead but I maintained that I do not have such an amount.
I told them that I had US$5 300 and R14 000 and surrendered it to them. They also took four cellphones and a laptop.
They threatened to kill my wife and forced-marched me to my house helper’s bedroom and took US$100 from her.
They spent almost an hour insisting that they wanted US$20 000 but I stood my ground and told them that I don’t have such an amount.
One of the robbers told me straight to my face that they were instructed not to attack me but to take the money only. After an hour they gave up and left.

Sarukore said the following day he met Ndoro near Nkulumane Complex and told him about the ordeal. He said:
<blockquote>
I met him by chance near Nkulumane Complex while he was driving to Kelvin North to service his car.
I told him that I had been robbed and he expressed shock and seemed to be in a hurry.
He told me that he would embark on a journey. After a day I received a call from another friend informing me that Ndoro had been arrested in Victoria Falls for attempted robbery.
After that, I began to suspect that he could be the one behind the robbery at my home.
</blockquote>
Sarukore’s suspicions were confirmed when the suspects who were brought by detectives from CID Homicide for indications revealed that his best friend was the mastermind of the robbery. He said:
<blockquote>
The suspects opened up and told me that they were given information by Ndoro and they were told to get US$20 000.
They even told me that he drove them to my house and warned them never to attack me or any member of my family but to take the money only and that’s what they did.
They told me that Ndoro had taken all the cellphones and a laptop. And they shared the money equally.
</blockquote>
Sarukore said his friendship with Ndoro dated four years back and their families always visited each other. He said:
<blockquote>
Ndoro and I were very close. His family and my family always visited each other. Ndoro knows every interior corner or part of my rooms.
Our friendship dates back four years when he was still stationed at Nkulumane Police Station before he was transferred to Gwanda.
Even when he was in Gwanda our bond remained strong as we communicated quite often. We always visited each other.
Recently he was transferred back to Nkulumane Police Station and our friendship remained strong.
</blockquote>
He also revealed that they used to attend the same church but along the way, Ndoro stopped going to church.

Police Officer Sends Armed Robbers To Raid Best Friend

A female police officer was arrested on Thursday last week for allegedly working in cahoots with burglars who broke into a Nedbank Bulawayo branch where more than US$270 000 and R2 million were stolen.
The <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/police-officer-in-nedbank-robbery-nabbed/">Chronicle</a> reported sources close to investigations as saying that Detective Constable Sinikiwe Ndlovu (38) of CID Stores in Bulawayo assisted the thieves in committing the crime.
It is alleged that Ndlovu received a Honda Fit vehicle for assisting the nine-member gang and was in constant communication with them before, during and after the burglary.
Investigators suspect that Ndlovu may have guided the gang on how to successfully carry out the burglary.
Bank employees discovered the break-in when they reported for duty on 28 August 2023.
ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Monday confirmed Detective Constable Ndlovu’s arrest. He said:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that Detective Constable Sinikiwe Ndlovu has been arrested on allegations of defeating and obstructing the course of justice.
This is in connection with the unlawful entry into premises and theft case at Nedbank Zimbabwe in Bulawayo and the arrest of two suspects Lovemore Gambiza (45) and Elias Mudenda (46).
The police are still pursuing the other suspects who are on the run. Members of the public with information should contact the National Complaints desk on (0242) 703631 or WhatsApp 0712 800 197.

Gambiza and Mudenda were arrested days after the robbery and they implicated seven others who are on the run.
The seven suspects are Agrippa Mloyi of Nkulumane suburb in Bulawayo, Dingilizwe Mloyi, Nqobile Mloyi, Sipho Tshuma, Bhekani Mlilo, and two others known only as Samamo and George.
Agrippa Mloyi and Bhekani Mlilo are reported specialists in breaking safes and skipped bail in 2018.
Upon her arrest, Detective Constable Ndlovu allegedly confessed that she received a silver-coloured Honda Fit vehicle, registration number AEY4681 from Agrippa Mloyi the night before the burglary.
However, she later claimed she had bought the vehicle for US$4 700 from Mloyi who she said was a childhood friend.
It is further alleged that Detective Constable Ndlovu could not produce an agreement of sale or the vehicle’s registration book.

Female Police Officer Linked To Nedbank Heist Arrested

Some rogue police officers are reportedly cashing in on the ongoing blitz dubbed “Tame the Traffic Jungle” by taking bribes from desperate motorists.
Investigations by <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/exposed-corrupt-cops-cash-in-on-blitz/">Business Times</a> this week show that some corrupt police officers have been soliciting and receiving bribes ranging between US$5 to US$10, even for serious offences.
Two police officers who were manning a roadblock close to OK Mart along Chiremba Road were allegedly taking turns to direct motorists to a nearby post where they placed the bribe money.
The drivers were being asked to hide the money behind huge rocks as directed by the police officers who would later collect the money at the end of the shift.
The cops were evidently avoiding being caught with the cash in their pockets as it constitutes a criminal offence.
An eyewitness of a bribe-taking incident by cops in Kambuzuma, close to Thuli Service station, in Harare, said:
<blockquote>
Our vehicle was flagged down by two police officers who claimed the vehicle was overloaded. There were four of us in the back and two in the front seat, the driver being the third.
The driver went out, briefly spoke to the police officers, came back to collect money then went back to them again.
After paying, we proceeded with our journey as if nothing had happened.
</blockquote>
In order to avoid being caught with bribe money by their superiors, corrupt cops have come up with new tricks.
They are now working in cahoots with some kombi crews and taxi drivers who will pass on the loot to them after duty.
The cops are also working with airtime and newspaper vendors operating within their vicinity who will be asked to keep the bribe money collected from kombi crews.
The rouge police officers are also targetting unlicensed drivers and unregistered vehicles.
A motorist who was forced to pay a bribe along Harare-Bulawayo Road in Warren Park said:
<blockquote>
I was driving a vehicle without the ZINARA license so I argued with them that I could not spare any money to give them since I was already on my way to pay.
One of them forced himself in my car and I offered US$10 and I was allowed to pass.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told Business Times that the bribe-taking cops will be arrested. He said:
<blockquote>
We are monitoring the situation and if there are police officers asking for bribes, if they are members of the public, especially motorists who are offering bribes, we will effect arrests.
</blockquote>
On Wednesday, 20 September, Assistant Comm Nyathi said that a total of 26 443 arrests had been effected during the ongoing operation.
He said 708 arrests have been made on vehicles without route permits while 10 204 arrests have been made on illegal pirate taxis (mushikashika).
Nyathi also revealed that 296 motorists have been arrested for reckless driving, while 1 761 people have been arrested for touting.
A total of 695 vehicles have been impounded for moving on the roads with no registration plates.

Rogue Cops Cash In On Operation “Tame the Traffic Jungle”

A police officer stationed at Tongwe base in rural Beitbridge recently appeared in court for allegedly insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and threatening to arrest ZANU PF members who were drinking beer at a local business centre, reported <a href="https://cite.org.zw/drunk-cop-insults-mnangagwa-threatens-to-arrest-zanu-pf-members/">CITE</a>.
The accused, Constable Tapfuma, is being charged with contravening Paragraph (5) 35 of the Schedule to the Police Act, Chapter 11. 10 as read with sections 29 and 34 of the said Act: “Acting in an unbecoming and disorderly manner or in any manner prejudicial to good order and discipline and reasonably likely to bring discredit to the police service.”
Allegations are that on 14 May 2023 at around 6.30 PM at Vendason Bottle Store, Constable Tapfuma was drinking beer and playing snooker with other patrons.
He allegedly insulted and threatened to arrest three ZANU PF members who were also at the bottle store.
The complainants are Mauritius Nare, Junior Ngorima and Freddy Sibindi. Part of the State outline reads:
<blockquote>
Upon noticing the three, the defaulter started insulting them saying, imi madhara eZANU PF munoita titambure, mukauya ku base kwangu makapfeka hembe ye ZANU PF ndokusunga! Meaning to say “ZANU PF supporters are causing people to suffer and if they enter a police camp whilst wearing ZANU PF regalia he will arrest them.”
The defaulter went on to say that he has been deployed at Tongwe base to make sure MDC wins this year’s elections.
The defaulter’s conduct was not in line with the ZRP code of conduct and brings the name of the organisation into disrepute.

Sibindi, who is headman under Chief Sitaudze, alleged that the police officer also claimed that he had assaulted one Habakkuk Ndou, a patron at the bottle store, for his allegiance to the ruling party. Said Sibindi:

I heard Constable Tapfuma telling Habakkuk Ndou who has a scar on his thigh that it was them as MDC members who had assaulted him, He said “ronda raunaro wakarohwa nesu isu vanhu ve MDC.
I rebuked him for uttering such sentiments. When I was about to leave the bottle store Constable Tapfuma grabbed me by the hand and asked me which political party I belonged to.
I replied that I belonged to ZANU PF and I was born a ZANU PF member. Constable Tapfuma started shouting at me saying (obscenities/vulgar) vanhu veZANU PF pamwe chete na President wenyu. Hamugoni kutonga.  Iwe wakagumira grade 5, President wenyu akagumira grade 7. Mapurisa akadeployiwa kuno kuma ruzevha ndee MDC gore rino ZANU PF hamuhwini,nyika ndeyedu isu ve MDC” which means you ZANU PF followers together with your president you are not educated. You only attained education up to grade 5 level and your president up to grade 7 level. All young police officers who are deployed in all these rural areas belong to MDC. This year ZANU PF is not winning elections and MDC is going to win.

In his testimony, Nare the village head of Makawa village under Chief Sitaudze also alleged that he heard Constable Tapfuma saying he would arrest any person who would come to the base to make a report wearing ZANU PF regalia.
Sibindi said he phoned Ward 4 Councillor Ketina Moyo and ZANU PF Beitbridge DCC Chairperson Samuel Mulaudzi and informed them about the ordeal.
Sibindi said the following morning, he went to the police base to confront Constable Tapfuma but he denied having uttered such words and pleaded for forgiveness stating that maybe he was drunk. Added Sibindi:

He begged me not to report the incident to anyone including his superiors. I left him and went home.
