The Zimbabwe Republic Police have confirmed two chilling murder cases that unfolded over the weekend, evoking shock and horror in the community.
In separate incidents, a father beheaded his son, and a man was killed over a pot containing sadza and chicken.
In the first case, a 32-year-old man from Daakoni Village in Buhera faces murder charges after allegedly beheading his 11-year-old son on Friday.
Tawanda Magoso reportedly returned home from a shrine where he had gone for prayers, retrieved an axe from his bedroom, and attacked his son.
The community rallied together, apprehending Magoso and escorting him to the local police station. Said the ZRP:

The ZRP reports that Tawanda Magoso (32) was arrested in connection with a case of murder which occurred at his house in Daakoni Village, Buhera on 10/01/25 in which his son, Taonga Magoso (11) died. 
The suspect allegedly returned home from a shrine where he had gone for prayers and took an axe from his bedroom which he used to strike the victim indiscriminately all over the body.
The victim’s head separated from its torso and sustained multiple injuries on the back. Resultantly, the victim succumbed to the injuries.
The suspect was later apprehended with the help of members of the community.

The second case occurred the following day in Village Midzi, Masvingo, where 41-year-old Makneme Chikutuva was arrested in connection with the murder of 42-year-old Maxwell Manjonjo.
Chikutuva allegedly assaulted Manjonjo with ox yoke leather straps after accusing him of stealing a pot filled with sadza and chicken.
When Chikutuva noticed that Manjonjo was struggling to breathe, he callously carried him to Musingarahwi Business Centre and abandoned him there.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police has also launched a manhunt for Takunda Gwitira, who is also being sought in connection with the murder case.

Father Beheads Son, And Man Killed For Stealing Sadza And Chicken

Carlos Ncube, a 26-year-old resident of Makwika village, Number 3, Hwange, appeared before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday facing two counts of unlawful entry.
On September 20, Ncube allegedly entered a home in the mining town and stole two pots, one containing sadza and the other beans.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), he also broke into a tuckshop that same night, taking Pepsi drinks, Fizzi, and Maheu. Said the NPA:

On the 20th of September 2024 at around 2200 hours, the accused person went to the first complainant’s house and and broke into the kitchen using an unknown object and took two silver pots, one with sadza and the other with beans.
The following morning, the complainant discovered that her pots were missing and tracked the accused person’s shoe prints which led to his place of residence.
On the same night, the accused person also broke into the second complainant’s tuckshop in the same village and stole 12 x 500ml Pepsi drinks, 2 litres Fizzy drink and 1x 500ml Pfuko Maheu. A police report was filed leading to the arrest of the accused person.
The total value stolen is ZWG514,17 and all was recovered.

Ncube was found guilty and was scheduled to return to court on September 25 for sentencing. However, the National Prosecuting Authority has not yet provided an update on the sentencing.

A man named Carlos Ncube from Hwange went into someone's house at night and stole two pots of sadza and beans. He also broke into a shop and took some drinks. The police caught him, and he was found guilty. He will go back to court for his punishment. The stolen things were worth ZWG514,17, but they were all returned to the owners.

Police in Manicaland Province have implored couples to seek counselling whenever there are misunderstandings rather than resort to self-harm.
This comes after a man and his wife from Marange committed suicide one after the other following a misunderstanding over how to prepare sadza.
Peter Mukwada (29) and Pure Gezana (21) were both employed as domestic workers in Rimai Village.
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/couple-commits-suicide-over-sadza/">The Manica Post’s</a> sources, Mukwada accused Gezana of wasting maize meal by using a big pot.
Gezana reportedly left the house and did not return. Her lifeless body was later found hanging from a tree in a nearby bush at the back of their employer’s homestead.
Her body was discovered by Mukwada, who upon seeing his wife dead, also hanged himself.
The couple is survived by two children.
ZRP spokesperson in Manicaland Province, Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the double suicide. He said:

Mukwada pointed out that Gezana was using a big pot to prepare sadza and was wasting maize meal.
He advised her to use a smaller pot but she stormed out of the kitchen and went to a bushy area where she hung herself using a rope. The bush is 50 metres away from the kitchen hut.
When Mukwada realised that more than 30 minutes had elapsed before his wife came back, he followed her and discovered her body hanging from a tree branch.
He called his neighbour, Ozias Kuhudzehwe, who accompanied him to the scene.
Mukwada later told Kuhudzehwe that he was feeling cold and wanted to put on a jacket. He went back home.

Kuhudzehwe also left the scene to go and inform the village head, Munamato Chipindirwe, about Gezana’s suicide. Added Insp Muzondo:

When Kuhudzehwe and Village Head Chipindirwe went to the scene, Mukwada had not yet returned.
The pair is alleged to have waited for about 30 minutes at the scene before following Mukwada.
When they could not locate him at his home, they started looking for him.
His body was later found hanging from a tree branch, at least 300 metres from where his wife had killed herself.

The matter was reported to the police and they attended the scene. Said Insp Muzondo:

Whenever people have a difference in opinion, we urge them to seek counselling from the police’s Victim Friendly Unit, professional counsellors, church leaders, community leaders or trusted relatives.
</blockquote>
Cases of suicide are seemingly on the rise as the country’s economic woes continue. This week, a deputy school head in Masvingo Province and a police officer in Harare committed suicide due to paltry salaries.

Couple Commits Suicide Over Pot Of Sadza

The Zimbabwe Diabetic Association (ZDA), has cautioned that people who eat too much sadza have a higher risk of being diagnosed with diabetes.  They said that contrary to popular belief that diabetes is caused by eating too much sugar, people who consume foods rich in starch have a higher risk of suffering from diabetes.
ZDA president John Mangwiro said:
<blockquote>Diabetes is not eating too much sugar, but too much sadza instead and milk which people consume in large quantities as they eat breakfast cereals,” he said.
In the young ones, the diabetes is caused either by pancreatic damage from a virus or auto immunity which results in them not being able to produce insulin by themselves
People should go back to traditional food stuffs such as rapoko, sorghum and indigenous fruits like matohwe, maroro and mazhanje.
In 2005, there was a national census of diabetes and it was found that five percent or 1,5 million people were diabetic. Internationally, it is recognised that in that population, half the people are not aware of their diabetic status.</blockquote>
