Muchinjike Primary School in Murehwa District did not open for the 2024 second term for more than a week due to disturbances linked to alleged Satanism.
As reported by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/school-yet-to-open-amid-wild-satanism-claims-divisions-over-sangomas-hiring/">H-Metro</a>, school authorities hired a Chitungwiza witchdoctor to cleanse the school which was expected to finally open for the second term this Thursday, 16 May.
The traditional healer, known as Mbuya Nacholo, has been camped at the school for three days, spending the days in classrooms.
Muchinjike Primary School has an enrolment of 700 pupils.
The move to hire the sangoma reportedly divided the teaching staff, with the deputy head, Florence Gavajena, and her husband, Samuel Ndarera, and an unidentified senior teacher, against the decision.
The local community, through the School Development Committee (SDC), hired Gogo Nacholo, sparking protests from other villagers, who were against the move.
The cost of hiring Gogo Nacholo, whose real name is Rita Ruwa, has been passed on to the parents who were reportedly charged US$40 each.
SDC secretary, Priscilla Marutawana, told H-Metro that several parents, whose children are pupils at the school, pushed the committee to hire the tradional healer. She said:

Reports of a Satanism scare started some time in November last year at this school.
Vana vaingodonha donha, vachirotomoka, vachidoma mazita evamwe vevarairidzi.
We tried to ignore it but we were later convinced following an accident that left some local social soccer players injured.
One of the villagers, believed to have been initiated into satanism, escaped unhurt from the accident and people began to suspect that something was wrong.
We engaged Gogo Nacholo at a fee and one of the teachers fought us through her legal practitioner.
The headmaster was fined three beasts by a traditional leader for accusing the teacher of witchcraft.
That did not stop us from allowing the sangoma to cleanse the school.
She cleansed all the classes and we have communicated with kraal heads, as well as the ward councillor, to inform parents to bring their children for lessons tomorrow (today).
We cannot fold our hands and watch our children being initiated into satanism, no, such teachers have no place here.

Gogo Nacholo confirmed to H-Metro conducting the cleansing ceremony at the school, saying she knew the school headmaster, Daniel Mudzamiri, before this incident. She said:
<blockquote>
First to consult me was the school headmaster, who visited my shrine at Stoneridge Park, sometime last year, when his daughter was attacked by satanism.
I helped him and his daughter got well and I want to believe that he is the one who introduced the SDC to me for the cleansing ceremony.
Vakandisumudza ndikaita basa vakazondipa nickname yekuti combine harvester.
I never pinpointed any teacher of practicing witchcraft but some unceremoniously left the school after I started my cleansing.

Witchcraft beliefs in Zimbabwe have deep roots and continue to play a significant role in the cultural and spiritual landscape despite modernisation and religious shifts.
Witchcraft in Zimbabwe is associated with various aspects of life, including power/politics, economic activities (kuromba), agriculture (divisi), and sexuality (runyoka and mubobobo).
The Witchcraft Suppression Act in Zimbabwe, formerly known as Chapter 9:19, aimed to suppress the practice of pretended witchcraft.
According to a report, <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/5134244.stm">the Act was repealed in 2006</a>, and its repeal acknowledged the cultural significance of witchcraft beliefs and practices in Zimbabwe, especially in rural areas where such beliefs persist.
The government acknowledges that supernatural powers exist – but prohibits the use of magic to cause someone harm.

Primary School Fails To Open For Term 2 Amid Satanism Claims

There was chaos at Hotsprings Secondary School in Chimanimani on Monday last week after irate parents stormed the institution, accusing two teachers of initiating more than 23 learners into satanism.
Anti-riot police officers were deployed to the school as the angry parents protested and shouted profanities at the two teachers (names withheld).
According to <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/satanism-scare-at-hotsprings-secondary-school/">The Manica Post</a>, since Sunday, learners at the school have been behaving strangely, including throwing themselves on the ground and uttering inaudible words.
Netsai Kudana of Nemutenzi Village told the publication that her brother’s 15-year-old daughter, whom she stays with, experienced unexplained phenomena the previous day, together with four other girls at one of the teachers’ houses. She said:

My niece has been struggling to walk since yesterday (Sunday) when she manifested and slithered like a snake. We are clueless about how to assist her, the teachers involved should give us the answers.
It all started yesterday morning when we heard that my niece’s classmate was manifesting at the school’s staff quarters.
People gathered to witness the drama. At least four girls were writhing on the ground and uttering inaudible words.
My niece then fell to the ground and started slithering like a snake. Her classmate said she is part of the group that was initiated into satanism by their teacher.

Maxwell Macheza claimed that his daughter was the first one to “manifest” during a church service. He said:
<blockquote>
It happened at church and we decided to take her to the teacher’s house. She said the teacher (name provided) was directing her to kill her mother and offer her as a sacrifice to the cult.
She said they were initiated through sweets. Apparently, this teacher sells sweets at the school. At least five learners manifested yesterday.
They all claimed that there were three snakes in the teacher’s house. They also claimed that there is a clay pot with their names in the teacher’s house.

A School Development Committee (SDC) member, Gloria Machaya, accused the school head, a Mr Matsikure, of working in connivance with the two teachers. She said:

We asked Chief Mutambara to second a traditional healer to the school and he had agreed, but the school headmaster, Mr Matsikure, called the chief in our presence.
He did not know that the chief’s phone was on loudspeaker and he told him that he suspected that everything was being stage-managed.
He said the learners were faking everything. That is why Chief Mutambara asked us to bring the children to his place.

In an interview with The Manica Post on Tuesday, Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Edward Shumba confirmed the disturbances but said finding a lasting solution to the issue is beyond their jurisdiction as the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education.
Acting Chief Mutambara said he was still waiting to hear from the SDC as he had instructed them to bring the affected learners to his place so that he could deal with the matter.
On Tuesday, the parents besieged the school again, insisting that teachers should be transferred.

Parents Besiege School, Accuse Two Teachers Of Initiating Learners Into Satanism

Learning and public examinations were disrupted at Chirinda High School in Ward Nine of Mutare South this week due to mysterious occurrences, reported <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/satanism-scare-grips-school/">The Manica Post</a>.
Since last week, Form Four girls were reportedly behaving strangely and there are suspicions that they were initiated into cultism by some teachers at the school.
The affected learners would call out teachers’ names and sometimes menacingly charge toward them.
On Wednesday, lessons were suspended at the school as school authorities were locked in meetings with officials from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education and parents of the affected learners.
One of the girls told The Manica Post that the strange happenings started after they attended a birthday party hosted by the headmistress. She said:
<blockquote>
One Saturday evening this month, a teacher (name withheld) came and fetched us from our dormitories around 7 PM.
She took us to the headmistress’ residence at the staff quarters within the school premises where she was hosting a birthday party for her daughter.
Cakes, popcorn, biscuits, sweets, and raspberry syrup were served at the party.
The school matron was not around that day and we returned to our dormitories around midnight.

The learner added that after a few days they started “visiting” an unknown place where they would get underwater during the night. She said:
<blockquote>
A lot happened there. We wore gold necklaces and bracelets as well as high-heeled shoes. 
Sometimes we stripped naked before wearing black robes and drinking blood from white glasses.
Eventually, we would turn into mermaid-like creatures.
</blockquote>
The girl said they fall under a spell each time any of the said teachers passes by.
She also said when she looks into the teacher’s eyes, the teacher’s face mysteriously spins into different shapes and forms with a fluorescent glow.
The girl’s sister Sandra Hoko said when the girl was taken to a nearby clinic after an inexplicable seizure, no disease was diagnosed.
Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Edward Shumba said:

From what I heard, this could be a case of hysteria. It then becomes difficult to differentiate between a person who is possessed or not as there may be no way to authenticate that with a spiritual, supernatural or scientific explanation. As such, it may be difficult to tell what is factual from fictition.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe National Traditional Healers’ Association (ZINATHA) president, George Kandiero said the girls are under a spiritual attack adding that it is possible that they are being used by cults for monetary or sexual gains.

Satanism Scare At School Disrupts Exams

Parents of learners at Holy Rosary High School in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Mvurwi">Mvurwi</a> besieged the learning institution on Friday after 20 school children allegedly became possessed by evil spirits in a suspected case of satanism.
School authorities were forced to lock the gates as furious parents wanted to storm the school until police intervened to calm the situation, according to <a href="https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/satanism-scare-at-holy-rosary-high-school/">ZBC News</a>.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Mashonaland Central Province Deputy Spokesperson, Sergeant Major Samuel Chikasha confirmed the incident.
An eye witness alleged that a Form 3 girl gave chocolates to her colleagues, leading to the girls becoming possessed. The eyewitness told ZBC News:

A Form 3 girl (name withheld) who was transferred from St Philips Magwenya on satanism allegations came to Holy Rosary and gave other school girls chocolates, thereby introducing them to satanism. So, yesterday 20 girls were possessed, disrupting lessons at the school.

The incident comes two months after a similar case happened at St Alberts High School in Mashonaland Central Province.
In 2018, Maramba Secondary School in Mutawatawa and St Joseph Secondary School in Rusape <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/02/14/2-schools-closed-following-satanism-scare/">were shut down following a Satanism scare</a>. It was reported back then that students went into mass hysteria and were admitted to Mutawatawa District Hospital.

Parents Besiege School Following Satanism Scare

A teacher at Kushinga Primary School in Odzi has been dragged to court following accusations she was drawing blood from Grade One pupils for unknown reasons.
The teacher, Gaynor Mudimu (32), is alleged to have taken blood samples from two learners and then tried to buy their silence with a biscuit each.
She appeared before Mutare provincial magistrate, Langton Carter for contravening Section 19 (1) (a) of the Anatomical Donations and Post-mortem Act, Chapter 15:01.
Mudimu, however, denied the charges, saying she only took the blood samples from the two children to conduct malaria tests.
She maintained that she had no ulterior motives. She said:

Your Worship, I was only testing them for malaria. I had no other intentions. l needed to test them for malaria as they looked sickly.
</blockquote>
Mudimu was remanded in custody to 23 September for trial.
Prosecuting, Thurstone Mubvumbi said on 5 September at around 6 pm, Mudimu invited an eight-year-old Grade One pupil to her house and drew blood samples from her finger. He said:
<blockquote>
Mudimu inserted a clinical syringe into the minor’s left thumb and drew blood samples from her. After collecting the blood samples, she handed over one loose biscuit to the minor and sent her home.
However, when the minor got home, she told her parents about what had happened. The minor’s parents reported the matter to the school’s deputy head, Mrs Estella Manjeese, before the matter was referred to the police.

On 6 September, Mudimu is alleged to have drawn blood from the finger of another pupil at her house and gave her one loose biscuit as payment for the process. Said Mubvumbi:
<blockquote>
Mudimu unlawfully and intentionally removed blood tissues from both juveniles when she knew very well that at law she is not authorised to do so.
The blood samples and the syringes were not recovered and police investigations are underway.

One of the victim’s aunt, Janet Kamudyariwa told <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/teacher-draws-blood-from-students/">The Manica Post</a> that she is suspecting that Satanism was at play. She said:
<blockquote>
When the police came to pick up the teacher, she failed to produce the blood samples.
She says she misplaced them. We suspect that either she sold or drank the blood.
We have a strong conviction that she was working in cohorts with Mr Kagurabadza [the school head] because when we reported the incidents to him, he brushed us off, saying it was a personal matter.
After we continued probing him, he called for a meeting with the parents. However, the meeting never materialised as the headmaster kept on giving flimsy excuses.
This irked us, prompting us to take the matter into our own hands. We no longer want him here.
He came here last year at almost the same time as Mudimu. We suspect they already knew each other before their transfer here.
</blockquote>
The other victim’s mother, Beauty Madzitire, who is also a teacher at the school, said she was away when the incident happened. Said Madzitire:
<blockquote>
My daughter was here with my sister. I am told that when Mudimu took the first blood samples from my daughter, she told her that she had little blood in her body.
Mudimu allegedly asked my daughter to watch her as she took a bath so that she could draw more blood from her.
If, indeed, she was testing her for malaria, why then did she have to watch her teacher taking a bath?
My daughter is recovering from the trauma, the whole thing was just too much for her.

Angry parents reportedly forced-marched the school head, Lloyd Kagurabadza and his family, from the school and left them a kilometre away.
Manicaland Provincial Education Director, Edward Shumba confirmed to The Manica Post receiving a report of the disturbances at Kushinga Primary School.
He said they are waiting for the law to take its course before deciding on the way forward.
