The Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Professor Mthuli Ncube last week announced that ZW$300 million would be allocated toward the development of a second satellite.
He made the remarks last Thursday while presenting the 2023 national Budget at the newly-built multi-million dollar Parliament in Mt Hampden. Ncube said:

The country successfully launched the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwes-first-satellite-goes-into-space-on-6-november-2022/">ZimSat-1</a> on 7 November 2022, a historic journey into space. The landmark event will facilitate water and mineral mapping, weather forecasting, infrastructure planning, border security and disaster prevention, among other benefits.
Given the multiple benefits to the overall economy from the project, the 2023 National Budget will provide additional
ZWL$300 million for the development of the second satellite including other supporting services.

Speaking on the first satellite earlier, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said it is <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/satellite-allows-us-to-see-our-country-from-outer-space-mnangagwa/">very important.</a> He said:

ZimSat-1 allows us to see our country from outer space. We are also able to make key interventions in national health, including foreseeing pandemics in time for timeous responses.

It is considered that the launch of ZimSat-1 will help Zimbabwe in the land, water and mineral mapping, including weather forecasting, infrastructure planning, border security and disaster prevention.
The satellite will host a multispectral camera, an image classification tool, and a device to transmit and receive signals from amateur radio operators.

2023 Budget: ZWL$300 m Allocated For Development Of 2nd Satellite

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has defended the recent launch of the country’s first satellite, Zimbabwe Satellite (ZimSat-1), saying it will enable the government to make timeous responses to disasters such as pandemics.
The government has been criticised for prioritising space projects when it is failing to adequately fund health and education among other critical national needs.
But Mnangagwa, writing in his column in the Sunday Mail, said the project will assist in disaster mitigation. He said:

Many thought this was rank madness by some starry-eyed dreamers, was something well beyond our reach given the myriad challenges we grappled with at the time.
Our infrastructure was broken, our economy was in a state of collapse and we endured long hours of power outages. Yet there we were, dreaming about participating in the space economy.

Satellite Allows Us To See Our Country From Outer Space - Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe’s first satellite,  ZimSat-1, was launched on Monday, 7 November 2022, by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The launch was made possible by Japan’s Kyushu Institute of Technology which unveiled what it called the Joint Global Multinational Birds Programme, or the “BIRDS” programme in 2015.
The programme is meant to increase knowledge of space technology around the world by training scientists from non-space countries, like Zimbabwe.
According to <a href="https://newzwire.live/one-small-step-meet-the-scientists-behind-zimbabwes-debut-satellite-launch/">newZWire</a>, four Zimbabwean scientists, Victor Mukungunugwa, Kudakwashe Jeje, Ramson Munyaradzi Nyamukondiwa, and Timothy Kuhamba, are working with Kyushu Institute of Technology under the current BIRDS-5 programme.
The scientists worked on “cubesats”, or nanosatellites, small satellites that weigh no more than 10kg and are widely used in the industry.
These were handed over to the Japanese space agency, JAXA, in July this year.

<h2>Victor Mukungunugwa</h2>
Victor Mukungunugwa is a graduate Aerospace Engineer and Space systems engineer from the National Aerospace University of Ukraine and Kyushu Institute of technology respectively. Victor is the BIRDS-5 Project Manager. He works mainly in satellite structure designing, satellite environmental testing and safety review.
<h2>Kudakwashe Jeje</h2>
Kudakwashe Jeje is an Aeronautical Engineer from Samara National Research University in Russia. He is part of the BIRDS-5 Project in the Structures and Attitude Determination and Control System.
<h2>Ramson Munyaradzi Nyamukondiwa</h2>
Ramson is a PhD Student in Electrical and Space Engineering in the laboratory of Lean Enterprise and In Orbit Experiments. He is a member of BIRDS-5 and LEOPARD Satellite Project.
<h2>Timothy Kuhamba</h2>
Timothy Kuhamba is the leading member for the Attitude Determination and Control Subsystem. Kuhamba is also responsible for designing the Attitude Visualization software to predict the camera pointing of the satellite.

Here Are The Four Zimbabweans Working On Satellite Programme

Zimbabwe’s first satellite,  ZimSat-1, was launched on Monday, 7 November 2022, by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The launch was initially set for Monday, 06 November, but was postponed to today due to a fire alarm in some parts of the building.
The launch of the NG-18 rocket that carries Zimbabwe’s ZIMSAT-1was aired on NASA Television and the agency’s website, as well as YouTube, Twitter, and NASA’s App.

The launch of Zimbabwe’s first satellite has raised a lot of debate online, with some people arguing that it is a waste of resources that could be put to better use, such as providing critical medicines and cancer machines in hospitals.
In 2015, Japan’s Kyushu Institute of Technology launched what it called the Joint Global Multinational Birds Programme, or the “BIRDS” programme.
The programme is meant to increase knowledge of space technology around the world by training scientists from non-space countries, like Zimbabwe.
Under BIRDS, scientists from the participating countries learn the entire processes of a satellite programme and get support in developing satellites.
Zimbabwe has been able to launch its first satellite after years of work by its four scientists, Victor Mukungunugwa, Kudakwashe Jeje, Ramson Munyaradzi Nyamukondiwa, and Timothy Kuhamba, who worked with Kyushu Institute of Technology under the BIRDS programme. Said Kyushi:

The satellite images taken by multispectral camera made by BIRDS-5 members with a spatial resolution of 100m shall be used to investigate land use and cover such as crop health, soil adjusted vegetation index, cultivated area.
Satellite images of dams and lakes captured by a BIRDS-5 made multispectral camera shall be used as a demonstration of water quality assessment.
The satellite will also help Zimbabwe monitor the weather, forests, crop hectarage, while also being useful in disaster management.
