Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora has stopped the construction of the Watervlei Burial Memorial Park, which was recently approved by the Harare City Council. The park is located along Seke Road, adjacent to the Prince Edward Water Treatment Plant.
Mombeshora halted the project over concerns that decomposing human remains and chemicals could contaminate water due to the site’s proximity to the water treatment facility.
In a letter addressed to Local Government and Public Works Minister Daniel Garwe, Mombeshora said no consultations had been conducted with the Ministry of Health and Child Care regarding the project. He said:

This falls short of the requirements of the Public Health Act… Corpses discharge chemicals and impurities that could seep into the groundwater.
</blockquote>
Mombeshora said the cemetery’s location violates World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, which recommend a buffer zone of at least 1 to 2 kilometers between cemeteries and water treatment facilities.
Despite warnings from the Harare Water Department about potential health risks, the Harare City Council granted a permit for the cemetery’s construction. Said Mombeshora:

The cemetery is too close to the stream, raising the chances of contamination of Seke Dam’s ground and surface water.
</blockquote>
The envisaged cemetery’s proximity to the stream that feeds into the raw water source increases the risk of pollution, echoing the recent Lake Chivero pollution incident that devastated local wildlife and fish populations.

A Harare man who stole a phone at the Seke Road accident that occurred on 13 August has been sentenced to one year imprisonment.
According to <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/man-jailed-for-stealing-accident-victims-phone/">H-Metro</a>, Terrence Mavheneke was implicated by the person he had sold the phone to.
The person who bought the phone from Mavheneke had gone to reset it at the now-deceased relative’s workshop.
It was the state’s case that on 13 August, the now deceased Christabella Makwanya was in a commuter omnibus travelling to town.
The kombi was involved in a fatal accident at the intersection of Seke and St Patrick’s roads.
Mavheneke, who is a conductor, disembarked from his vehicle and started to offer help to the injured people at the accident scene.
The court heard that while offering assistance, Mavheneke picked up Makwanya’s phone that was on the ground as she had passed away and kept it.
He sold it to Nigel Kwaramba and Godwin Chindima, who was arrested trying to reset it at a workshop belonging to Makwanya’s relative, who tipped the police.
Mavheneke appeared before Epworth magistrate Esther Mutezo, who sentenced him to 12 months’ imprisonment.
However, five months were suspended on condition that he doesn’t commit a similar offence, while seven months are effective.

Man Jailed For Stealing Seke Road Accident Victim’s Phone

The death toll from a head-on collision involving two kombis along Seke Road last Tuesday has increased from three to seven, as four of the injured people later died in hospital.
The accident occurred when Sergeant James Makaranga (37), a police officer assigned to the Police Protection Unit and residing in Chitungwiza, was driving a Toyota Hiace and encroached into oncoming traffic on Seke Road, resulting in a collision with another kombi.
At the time of the accident, Makaranga was transporting 15 passengers when his vehicle collided head-on with a Nissan Caravan driven by Tashinga Chihava (22), who had 18 passengers on board.
Reports indicate that Makaranga attempted to overtake a Mazda Bongo van that was turning from St Patrick’s Road into Seke Road, which led to the collision with Chihava’s vehicle.
Sadly, two passengers, Wayne Chipuriro (42) and Pecking Feliati (40) lost their lives at the scene, while another passenger died shortly after being admitted to Sally Mugabe Central Hospital.
In an update on the incident released on Tuesday, August 20, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that four additional victims, who were receiving treatment at Sally Mugabe Hospital and Chitungwiza Hospital, have also died. Reads the statement:

Seke Road Accident Death Toll Climbs To Seven

Two people were killed on the spot while 35 others were seriously injured when two commuter omnibuses (kombis) collided head-on at the intersection of Seke and St Patrick’s roads in Harare on Tuesday morning.
Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the tragic development to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/two-killed-35-injured-in-horror-seke-road-crash/">The Herald</a>, saying two people died on the spot. He said:
A Hatfield resident, Nobert Chiwetu, whose home is located about 200 metres away from the accident scene, said there is a need to install traffic lights at the intersection of St Patrick’s and Seke Roads to control traffic. Said Chiwetu:

On Friday evening we witnessed another accident in the same area, with a number of people injured, so there is a need to install traffic lights to reduce speed and avoid loss of life.

Some eyewitnesses who spoke to The Herald blamed a police officer for the accident.
They said a cop was driving one of the commuter omnibuses which encroached into the wrong lane resulting in a head-on collision. Said another Hatfield resident:

Tafadzwa Jacobs, a frequent transporter along Seke Road, said the majority of accidents in the area are caused by excessive speeding.
He strongly urged the local authorities to install speed humps along the road to slow down traffic and improve safety for all road users.
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) executive director Roselyn Hanzi expressed serious concerns about the dangerous driving behaviours of kombi operators, saying they pose a significant threat to public safety and must be held accountable. She said:

Combi drivers are oftentimes reckless. They drive towards oncoming traffic and act as if they have title deeds to all the roads. They need to be reined in. When driving on Harare roads especially you need to activate all your eyes…..&amp; be extremely alert.

Two killed, 35 Injured In Seke Road Accident

A hit-and-run driver who caused a fatal road traffic accident on June 20, 2023, at the intersection of Seke Road and Craneborne Avenue was been arrested by members of the public.
In a statement seen by Pindula News, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reported that the accident involved a Nissan UD truck that hit a motorcycle from behind, killing the passenger and injuring the rider. Reads the statement:

The ZRP reiterates that drivers must stop after an accident. Police in Harare are investigating a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 20/06/23 at the intersection of Seke Road and Craneborne Avenue.
A Nissan UD truck with no passengers on board hit a motor cycle from behind resulting in the passenger being killed while the rider sustained head injuries.
The driver of the UD truck, Masimbaashe Chindondo (26) did not stop after the accident and was subsequently apprehended by members of the public after a speed chase.

Hit-and-Run Driver Who Caused A Fatal Accident Arrested By Public

<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/pictures-11-cars-involved-in-an-accident-in-harare/">Eleven (11) cars were involved in an accident</a> at the intersection of Coca-Cola along Seke Road in Harare’s Graniteside industrial area on Tuesday morning.
Witnesses said the accident was caused by the driver of a bus who lost control of his vehicle following brake failure and crashed into an Isuzu truck, which landed on top of a Honda Fit vehicle, leading to a pile-up, but there were no fatalities. A witness told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200004323/11-cars-in-freak-pile-up">NewsDay</a>:

The bus lost brakes and when it was trying to avoid an oncoming truck it rammed into a white pick-up truck which landed on top of a Honda Fit, leading to a pile-up accident. The white Isuzu truck had only one occupant and the Honda Fit had three occupants who were pulled out of the car by onlookers.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident saying investigations were underway. He is cited as saying:

I can confirm that there was a multiple car accident in the morning at Coca-Cola intersection, Seke Road in Harare. There were minor injuries and a detailed statement is to be released in due course. Police investigations are underway.

Vendors at the intersection implored road authorities to fix the roads saying the area has become a black spot.
An onlooker urged the government to put humps on the Coca-Cola intersection saying many people have lost lives whilst vendors lost their wares due to these accidents.

Two people died following a hit-and-run Saturday evening along Seke Road. 
A police statement seen by Pindula News says one victim died on the spot while the other died upon admission at Chitungwiza Hospital. Reads the statement:

Police in Harare are investigating a hit-and-run road traffic accident in which two people died after they were hit by an unknown motorist on 17/09/22 at around 1930 hours along Seke Road opposite Ridgeview Secondary School.

Meanwhile, police in Bulawayo are investigating a case of theft of a white Honda Fit vehicle, registration number AFK 0941, which was stolen by unknown suspects on the 15th of this month at a house in Nketa 7, Bulawayo.

Two People Die In A Hit-and-run Incident

Police said they have recovered one of the two vehicles that were stolen from Koala Park Butchery along Seke Road in Harare during an armed robbery on Tuesday morning.
Posting on their Twitter page, Police said the vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser registration number AAV 2589, was found dumped near Morgan Zimtec College in Braeside, Harare. Police said:

"Koala Armed Robbers Pretended To Be NetOne Employees"

Armed robbers pounced on a bank in Bulawayo and got away with US$70 000 cash while a farmer along Seke road was robbed of US$ cash and two vehicles as armed robbery cases continue to rise in Zimbabwe.
In reports seen by Pindula News, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said they were still investigating the cases. 
Police said the robbery at the CBZ bank, located at the corner of 5th Street and 10th Avenue in Bulawayo occurred this Tuesday, 13 September 2022 around 12 00 hours.
<h2>What happened:</h2>
The police report says five unknown suspects who pretended to be genuine customers pounced on the bank and got away with US$ 70 000 cash. 
The armed robbers are said to have quietly carried out their raid with few people noticing the incident.
Witnesses told <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/armed-robbers-raid-cbz/">Sunday News</a> that they only saw police officers reacting to the robbery and that is how they knew there had been a robbery.
When a Sunday News crew got to the scene, police details had arrived carrying out their investigations.
Police said they will provide more details at the appropriate time. 
<h2>Another case:</h2>
In yet another armed robbery case, eight unknown suspects armed with unidentified pistols stormed a farm along Seke Road today, the 13th of September 2022 around 11 00 hours and stole cash and cars.
A police report seen by Pindula News says they got away with US$30 000 cash, a Toyota Landcruiser vehicle and an Isuzu KB vehicle.
Investigations are already underway.

Armed Robberies: Bank Loses US$ 70 000 Cash, Farmer Loses US$30k Cash, 2 Vehicles

A speeding motorist who drove against traffic while trying to beat congestion, yesterday fatally hit a pedestrian at the Flyover along Seke Road in Harare.
The motorist hit a man who was crossing the road and the pedestrian died on the spot.
The Herald arrived at the scene and witnessed a traffic jam as people tried to come to terms with the horrific accident.
Witnesses said the driver was speeding. Said the witnesses:

The driver of a Toyota Mark X was travelling towards the city centre and against the flow of traffic. He was speeding, trying to beat traffic congestion when the pedestrian was crossing the road.
After hitting the man, the driver of the Mark X collided with an oncoming Honda Fit.
