“The Write Space”, a platform for creatives is slowly emerging as a symbol of hope for writers, readers, and literary fanatics alike.
This event is set to take centre stage on July 27th at 15 York Avenue, Newlands, Harare from 3:00 PM
The driving force behind The Write Space is Morset Billie, a creative who wears many hats – from published writer and spoken word artist to events coordinator and cultural manager.
Billie has teamed up with acclaimed author Farayi Mungoshi and renowned writer-performer Lennox Makurumidze to bring this project to life. Said Billie:

The Write Space was created to be a platform for literature lovers to meet, share and connect with each other. It will help writers, readers and others in the literary world connect and grow together by encouraging progressive and engaging dialogue about matters affecting the sector.

Through a series of monthly discussions, workshops, and other engaging activities, The Write Space seeks to cultivate a safe and stimulating environment for meaningful conversations to take place.

Industry professionals, stakeholders, and audiences will be invited to explore specific topics relevant to the literary community. Added Billie:

Acclaimed writer and spoken word artist Lennox Makurumidze who is part of the ‘The Write Space’ panel of discussion shared insightful reflections on the growth of his poetic craft.
Makurumidze emphasized that as creative individuals, artists are constantly in search of bettering themselves, driven by the “high of creation.”
He noted that poetry and spoken word, in particular, are not merely technical mediums, but rather expressions of human emotion that evolve alongside the person creating them.
Drawing from his experiences in Harare, Zimbabwe, Makurumidze expressed a desire to amplify the stories of everyday people, whether joyful or sorrowful, uplifting or critical.

His goal is to convey the diverse narratives of his community through the power of storytelling in his poetry.
Educator and social entrepreneur Suraiya Essof praised the impact of The Write Space, a literary initiative she recently attended.
Essof noted that the event helped shift perspectives on writer’s block, reframing it as a normal part of the creative process rather than a sign of failure.
She found the sense of community and shared experiences among the writers particularly powerful, realizing they all face similar struggles.
Essof highlighted how The Write Space bridges the gap between isolation and connection for writers, providing a platform for storytelling, feedback, and collective growth within the literary world.

From Page To Stage: "The Write Space" Uplifts Writers, Readers, And More In Zimbabwe

In a small village nestled in the heart of Manicaland Province, Tarisai Ndimi wakes up before the crack of dawn to start her day.
She cooks, cleans, fetches water, takes care of younger siblings, and tends to the needs of her family before heading off to school herself.
This is the reality for many young women in Zimbabwe who bear the burden of unpaid care and domestic work.
Unpaid care and domestic work have long been seen as the responsibility of women and girls, perpetuating gender stereotypes and limiting their opportunities for education, employment, and taking up leadership positions.
This invisible labour often goes unrecognized and undervalued, leading to a cycle of poverty and inequality that disproportionately affects women and girls.
As Tarisai navigates her daily tasks, she dreams of becoming a leader in her community, of making a difference and creating positive change.
However, the weight of her domestic responsibilities is like an albatross on her shoulders, leaving her exhausted and with little time or energy to pursue her ambitions. Said Tarisai:

I cannot attend after-school clubs because I must be home to start with preparations for dinner. I can only write my homework after all the household chores have been attended to which is quite late into the night.
Even if I was selected to be a prefect, I would have to forfeit the position because I can not effectively carry out my duties due to obligations at home that require my attention.
</blockquote>
For young women like Tarisai, the demands of unpaid work often come at the expense of their education. Girls may attend school irregularly or drop out entirely to meet their family’s needs.
This educational disadvantage continues into adulthood, where women are less likely to pursue higher education or vocational training, further limiting their career prospects and financial independence.
Addressing this issue requires targeted policies that support girls’ education, such as scholarships, flexible school hours, and community awareness programs that emphasize the importance of gender equality in education.
The negative impact of unpaid care and domestic work on young women’s participation in leadership and community development is evident.
They are often excluded from decision-making processes, marginalized in public spaces, and constrained by societal expectations that prioritize their domestic roles over their personal and professional aspirations. 
According to the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe, even when women try to enter the workforce, unpaid domestic labour becomes a major obstacle to their access to paid work opportunities.
Although women’s inclusion into the workforce is a sign of empowerment, it leaves them with a double burden. They have to handle work responsibilities in addition to their domestic work. 
When one woman steps out of the house to work, the responsibility of domestic work falls on the other women in the house.
In nuclear families where both the partners work outside, women are still responsible for almost all house and family-related work.
According to data from the International Labour Organization (ILO), women spend an average of 4 hours and 25 minutes per day on unpaid care and domestic work, while men spend an average of 1 hour and 23 minutes per day on such activities.
This means that women, on average, spend more than twice the amount of time on domestic work compared to men.
According to Sibonokuhle Buhlungu , the cluster lead for the Politics and Decision Making for the Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe, the invisible burden of unpaid care and domestic work has resulted in fewer women participating in leadership and decision making processes.
They spend a disproportionate amount of time on UCDW, ensuring that the household runs smoothly and fulfilling the caregiving role. Buhlungu further stated:
<blockquote>
Women are left with little or no time to contribute meaningfully to the leadership and decision-making discourse. This has led to fewer women taking up leadership positions.
</blockquote>
Furthermore, the lack of recognition and support for their unpaid labor perpetuates a cycle of poverty and disempowerment, limiting their ability to break free from traditional gender roles and achieve their full potential.
It is imperative that the systemic barriers that prevent young women from fully participating in leadership and community development be addressed and this includes recognizing and valuing their contributions in the home, providing access to education and training opportunities, and creating supportive environments that promote gender equality and empowerment.
In Zimbabwe, we have seen various women’s empowerment organizations like WICoZ advocating and pushing for a National Care Policy that will recognize and acknowledge the value, effort, and contribution of unpaid care and domestic work to women and girls.
Furthermore, if this policy is implemented, it will reduce the disproportionate burden of care work on women and girls, giving them more time to take up leadership positions and get involved in important decision-making processes.

The Invisible Burden: Unpaid Care And Domestic Work's Impact On Young Women's Leadership And Community Development

BustopTV, led by creative director Derrick Nziyakwi, has taken a bold step to address LGBTQI rights in Zimbabwe through their documentary “Transcend the Ballot.” This documentary is premised on raising awareness and advocating for the marginalised transgender community in the country.
Nziyakwi explained that BustopTV felt compelled to tackle this sensitive issue due to the realities of everyday life and the global significance of LGBTQI rights. Despite societal hesitancy in engaging with the topic, the creative team recognised the urgent need to amplify the voices and shed light on the struggles faced by transgender individuals, who are often overlooked or misunderstood. Journalist Shingirai Manyegavana quotes Nziyakwi as saying:

The transgender community exists, and their concerns are undeniably real. As a society, we can no longer avoid discussing these issues.
</blockquote>
Nziyakwi added that the goal of “Transcend the Ballot” is to serve as a mirror of society, examining the unique experiences, challenges, and aspirations of transgender individuals in Zimbabwe. The documentary aims to challenge societal norms, foster understanding, and promote an environment of acceptance.
However, the production of the documentary faced challenges, particularly in securing funding and engaging stakeholders in discussions about LGBTQI rights. Despite these hurdles, BustopTV remains committed to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities.
BustopTV organised community screenings of the documentary in Domboshava and Epworth, facilitating meaningful dialogues within local communities. Funding for these screenings was provided by Hivos. Moreblessing Wadzanai Femberwi, who collaborates with the Centre for Sexual Health and HIV AIDS Research Zimbabwe (CeSHHAR), emphasised the importance of democratic rights for transgender individuals. Femberwi stressed the need for awareness campaigns and educational materials to foster understanding.
While the government has yet to approve these initiatives, CeSHHAR operates clinics that provide vital support and healthcare services to transgender individuals. Muchaneta Savanhu, a community member from Epworth, highlighted the significance of treating transgender individuals with dignity and respect. Savanhu emphasized the need for fair treatment during elections, including equal access to appropriate restroom facilities, to uphold their democratic rights. Education and awareness regarding the existence and experiences of transgender individuals were also deemed essential.
<h3>State Of LGBTI in Zimbabwe</h3>
Zimbabwe, like many other African countries, criminalises and does not tolerate homosexual activities. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga recently <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/02/15/vp-chiwenga-denounces-lgbt-scholarship-offer-for-zimbabwean-students/">denounced a scholarship offer by LGBT organisations</a>, stating that it was meant to lure young Zimbabwean students into LGBT activities. Chiwenga referred to LGBT activities as unlawful, challenging Zimbabwe’s sovereignty. He emphasised that Zimbabwe, as a Christian nation, does not entertain “such alien, anti-life, un-African, and unchristian values.”
He said the government of Zimbabwe firmly rejects and denounces scholarship offers related to LGBT activities, considering them unlawful, unchristian, and anti-Zimbabwean. The former military boss said the government sees such offers as a direct challenge to its authority and vows to enforce national laws and protect national values. Chiwenga emphasised that Zimbabwe is a sovereign, African state with its own laws and values that set it apart from other societies.
