Zimbabwean citizens who received the Chinese-developed COVID-19 vaccines, Sinopharm and Sinovac, are now eligible to travel to the United States of America (U.S.) after that country lifted severe travel restrictions and imposed new vaccine requirements.
The United States State Department Spokesman, Ned Price announced a new vaccination policy that will go on a factsheet for international travellers on 8 November.
Under the new policy, foreign nationals vaccinated with approved vaccines for emergency use by the World Health Organisation (WHO) would be allowed to travel to the United States.
This means Zimbabweans vaccinated with Sinopharm or Sinovac can board a plane and travel, as these vaccines are approved by WHO.
However, this order makes it difficult for unvaccinated non-American citizens to travel to the US. Said Price:

As of November 8, foreign national travellers to the US will be required to be fully vaccinated and to provide proof of vaccination status prior to boarding an airplane to the US.
This policy puts public health first. It is consistent and stringent protecting US citizens and residents as well as those who come to visit us.
Because it puts public health first, exceptions to this policy will be extremely limited.

Price said exceptions would primarily be children under the age of 18 and certain individuals from countries where vaccines are not yet readily accessible. He said:

Those who are eligible to travel but not vaccinated will need to provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test within one day before their flight’s departure.
</blockquote>
For those travellers who are vaccinated, the testing requirement remains three days before their flight.

Zimbabweans Who Received Chinese Covid Vaccines Can Now Travel To The U.S.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) today, Friday 7 May 2021, listed the Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine for emergency use, giving the green light for this vaccine to be rolled out globally.
The Sinopharm vaccine is produced by Beijing Bio-Institute of Biological Products Co Ltd, a subsidiary of China National Biotec Group (CNBG).
WHO Assistant-Director General for Access to Health Products Dr Mariângela Simão said:
<blockquote>The addition of this vaccine has the potential to rapidly accelerate COVID-19 vaccine access for countries seeking to protect health workers and populations at risk.
We urge the manufacturer to participate in the COVAX Facility and contribute to the goal of more equitable vaccine distribution.</blockquote>
WHO’s Emergency Use Listing (EUL) is a prerequisite for COVAX Facility vaccine supply. It also allows countries to expedite their own regulatory approval to import and administer COVID-19 vaccines.
The EUL assesses the quality, safety and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines, as well as risk management plans and programmatic suitability, such as cold chain requirements.
The assessment is performed by the product evaluation group, composed of regulatory experts from around the world and a Technical Advisory Group (TAG), in charge of performing the risk-benefit assessment for an independent recommendation on whether a vaccine can be listed for emergency use and, if so, under which conditions.
In the case of the Sinopharm vaccine, the WHO assessment included on-site inspections of the production facility.
On the basis of all available evidence, WHO recommends the vaccine for adults 18 years and older, in a two-dose schedule with a spacing of three to four weeks.
Vaccine efficacy for the symptomatic and hospitalized disease was estimated to be 79%, all age groups combined.

WHO Lists Sinopharm COVID-19 Vaccine For Emergency Use

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has said countries were free to import and administer the Chinese-made Sinopharm COVID-19 although it is yet to be certified by the global health agency.
The Sinopharm vaccine is currently undergoing the evaluation process.
While some countries worldwide have expressed scepticism over the drug, some countries including Zimbabwe have since ordered it and started to administer it.
Zimbabwe’s Vice President, Constantino Chiwenga who is also the minister of Health and Child Care was the first to be inoculated with the Sinopharm drug while President Emmerson Mnangagwa would take the vaccine two weeks later.
WHO country representative to Zimbabwe, Dr Alex Gasasira said this week there was nothing amiss with the process in which the Chinese government handled its vaccine distribution.
Speaking during a question and answer session at a training programme on Covid-19 reporting in Gweru organised by the Media Institute of Southern Africa-Zimbabwe Chapter, Gasasira said:

Gasasira added that while it was good to have the approval of the United Nations (UN) health agency, lack of it did not hamper the use of a vaccine or medicine. He added:
<blockquote>There are many examples of medicines that are registered by the Food and Drug Administration of the USA that are not registered by WHO. They are being used because the Food and Drug Administration is registered. There are many of these examples.
WHO insists that one brings dossiers after a national regulatory authority has registered you. When your national regulatory authority is happy with the work that you have done in developing that vaccine or developing that medicine or in developing that medical device, then you bring your papers to us. We then look at the documents.</blockquote>
The use of COVID-19 vaccines, globally, is limited by concerns over the efficacy of the drugs which “were not given enough time for assessment.”
WHO insists no side effects have been recorded on all approved vaccines to date.

WHO Speaks On Yet To Be Certified Sinopharm Vaccine

Zimbabwean doctors who are part of frontline health care workers who received the Chinese Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine have urged the nation to be vaccinated saying that was the best way to protect the nation.
They speak as some members of the public have expressed fear over the vaccine which they say might have huge side effects. Some stakeholders even urged the government to ensure that the vaccines they procure are safe.
Meanwhile, the minister of Health and Child Care, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, has since been vaccinated to allay fears over the vaccine’s safety.
Epidemiologist and director of health for Kadoma City, Dr. Daniel Chirundu, who received his first jab four days ago told The Herald that he took the vaccine to protect himself, his family, and his clients. He added:
<blockquote>My vaccination also served as a cue to action among my subordinates and others who are now demanding it.
It has been three days and I have not experienced any side effects.</blockquote>
He urged eligible Zimbabweans to take the vaccine and also encouraged them to continue observing measures such as wearing clean face masks the proper way, practicing social distance and hand hygiene that were recommended to curb the transmission of the coronavirus.
A doctor at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo, Dr Misheck Ruwende said the citizenry should stop being anxious about the Chinese Sinopharm vaccine.

Zimbabwean Doctors Urge The Nation To Get Vaccinated

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has written a letter to the Ministry of Health and Child Care demanding an assurance that clinical trials of the Chinese-developed Sinopharm vaccine and any future coronavirus vaccines are tested for safety and efficacy before they are administered to the population.
In the letter dated 16 February 2021, the ZLHR, through their lawyers Mbidzo, Muchadehama and Makoni Legal Practitioners, said they are worried that the bodily or psychological integrity of individuals which includes the right not to be subjected to medical or scientific experiments is being violated. The letter read in part:
<blockquote>Our Client was taken aback by the pronouncement made by acting Health Secretary Dr Robert Mudyirandima, who said on a ZBC News bulletin, on the 15th of February 2021, that during the rollout, tests will be done to measure its effectiveness on current mutations, variants and strains.  This is what Dr Mudyirandima said in Shona;
…Patinengetichibaya pachange pachitorwa humbowo hwacho hwokuda kuona kuti unoshanda here nokuti parakagadzirwa harina kumboshandiswa kutariswa pane variant iriko yakabuda yekuSouth Africa. Saka parizvino hapana anogona kutaura kuti rinoshanda here kana kuti harishande”(while vaccinating, Government will be conducting clinical trials to verify whether the Sinopharm vaccine will work as when it was manufactured it was not tested against the variant coming out off South Africa. So, at the moment no one knows whether it works or does not work).
It is, therefore, our Client’s view that clinical trials precede the rolling out of the vaccination programme, the aim being to establish whether the vaccination drug undergoing trials is safe to administer and will not have adverse side effects. 
Clinical trials cannot be conducted simultaneously with the actual vaccination of the population as the Acting Health Secretary appears to suggest. 
If that happens, many lives would be put at risk as they may be victims of irreversible side effects. Reports from other countries where this vaccine has been tested appear to confirm the possibility of such side effects.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, Vice President and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga on Wednesday told Parliamentarians that the Sinopharm was approved by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and that was why the government chose it.
