The Supreme Court has reinstated five members of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) who had been fired from work for allegedly stealing food rations.
Supreme Court Justices Samuel Kudya, Joseph Musakwa and Susan Mavangira reinstated the five without loss of salaries, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200027827/supreme-court-reinstates-five-soldiers">NewsDay</a>.
The officers were dismissed despite being acquitted by the Court Martial.
The High Court had ordered the ZNA to reinstate Collen Chiba, Charles Mhuri, Bothwell Gorekore, Democracy Murambaroro, and Gibson Madzinga, a ruling which the ZNA appealed at the Supreme Court.
In its ruling, the Supreme Court bench said “A determination that is premised on the violation of a statute is void and of no legal effect”. Added the judges:

The respondents were neither provided with the record of proceedings nor the reasons upon which the decision was made.
They could not, therefore, impugn the correctness of the decision by appealing it.
Rather, they were aggrieved by the decision-making process, which entailed seeking a review…
Where a dismissal is set aside as being a nullity, the employee is reinstated as such notwithstanding the further disciplinary proceedings that the court may order by way of remittal or otherwise.
The respondents have generally succeeded. They are entitled to their costs of appeal, on the ordinary scale.

According to court documents, on August 17, 2017, the respondents were prosecuted but acquitted of theft of State property by General Court Martial.
However, the commander issued a convening order on April 4, 2018, for a board of suitability (BOS) to investigate the theft of rations by the respondents.
The order mandated the board to inquire into and determine the suitability of the respondents to remain as serving members of the army.
It was also directed to obtain documentary proof and a record of each member’s competence and conduct.
The board ruled that the officers were inefficient and unfit to remain in the ZNA.
The lawyers representing the soldiers then requested the record of proceedings from the BOS, but the latter refused.
They then approached the High Court seeking a review of the termination of their employment on the grounds that the determination was “irrational, illegal and unfair.”
The High Court ruled in their favour and ordered that they be reinstated, which prompted the board to approach the Supreme Court arguing that the lower court had erred.

Supreme Court Reinstates Five Soldiers Dismissed For "Stealing" Food Rations

The Harare Magistrates Court has ordered Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) Commander Lieutenant-General Anselem Sanyatwe and Defence Minister Oppah Muchinguri to fork out about US$30,000 in damages to compensate Felix Mafondokoto, a victim of army brutality.
According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Mafondokoto was shot by a soldier during a clampdown on anti-government protests held five years ago. The ZLHR said:

Mafondokoto, a 43-year-old resident of Chitungwiza, was shot by ZNA members on 19 January 2019, when soldiers were dispersing people during a clampdown on anti-government protests, which gripped the country as people protested against an arbitrary hike in fuel prices and the agonising economic crisis blamed on President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.
While Mafondokoto was not participating in the protests, he ended up being admitted in hospital after sustaining injuries from being shot at by a ZNA member.
The Chitungwiza resident, who suffered severe injuries from the shooting and still has some bullet fragments in his body, engaged Kossam Ncube of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, who assisted him in suing Sanyatwe and Hon. Muchinguri and demanded to be paid US$49 000 in damages for the violation of his fundamental rights.
In the summons filed at Harare Civil Magistrates Court, Mafondokoto asked the court to order Sanyatwe and Hon. Muchinguri to compensate him for the pain and suffering he endured, nervous shock, loss of earnings and for the medical expenses, which he incurred as he got hospitalised for treatment.
On Monday 20 May 2024, after presiding over a full trial in which Lieutenant Colonel Whatmore Ziweni, the ZNA Operations Chief, testified on behalf of Sanyatwe and Muchinguri, Harare Magistrate Mandlenkosi Ndhlovu ordered the duo to pay US$29 182 to Mafondokoto as compensation for the damages, which he suffered from the brutality perpetrated by soldiers.
</blockquote>
Magistrate Ndhlovu ruled that Mafondokoto suffered severe injuries and endured excruciating pain and suffering and had to undergo various operation procedures.
Magistrate Ndhlovu stated that Mafondokoto now struggles to work for extended periods because of the injuries, he sustained which now impact his livelihood.

Chitungwiza Man Shot By Soldiers Gets US$30 000 In Compensation

Four members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) comprising a Brigadier General, two Majors, and a Sergeant, died in a head-on collision along the Harare-Bulawayo road on Tuesday.
The accident was confirmed by the ZDF Director of Poly, Public Relations and International Affairs, Brigadier General Augustine Chipwere.
In a statement seen by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/4-zdf-members-killed-in-road-traffic-accident/">The Herald</a>, Brigadier General Chipwere said the accident occurred about 2km from Battlefields in Mashonaland West Province. He said:

It is with a heavy heart that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces announces the death of a general officer, two field officers and a non-commissioned member in a fatal road accident which occurred on April 16, 2024.
Brigadier General Shadreck Vezha, Major Thabani Ncube, Major Mqondisi Gumbo and Sergeant Chakabaiwa were involved in a road traffic accident at the 180km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road about 2km from Battlefields.
According to preliminary investigations, it was established that Brigadier General Vezha attempted to overtake an unidentified vehicle and encroached into the oncoming vehicle lane resulting in a head-on collision with the Mazda CX-5 which was travelling towards Kwekwe.
Some passengers who were aboard both vehicles sustained varying degrees of injury and are currently admitted at Gweru and Kwekwe General Hospitals.
Investigations surrounding the accident are underway and more information will be availed in due course.

Two Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) members were on Thursday sentenced to nine years in jail for illegal possession of ivory, reported <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200022156/two-soldiers-jailed-9-years">NewsDay</a>.
Wilfred Minesi (33) and Virimayi Nyandoro (36) who were stationed at One Commando Regiment in Harare were hauled before Magistrate Ruth Moyo.
Their alleged accomplices Maxwell Nduna and Micheal Zhaunkinyu were acquitted due to lack of evidence.
Allegations were that on 02 April 2021, detectives from CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit Harare received information that two men were looking for potential buyers of elephant tusks.
Detectives contacted Nduna who led them to the suspects. Upon meeting with the detectives, Minesi and Nyandoro said they had elephant tusks that they intended to sell for US$40 per kilogramme.
The two soldiers said they had hidden the ivory in Mukuvisi River near Brooks Drive, Hillside, Harare.
They then led detectives to Mukuvisi River where the ivory was retrieved.
Upon seeing the ivory, the detectives identified themselves as CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit members.
Minesi and Nyandoro failed to produce any licence or permit that authorised them to possess the ivory, leading to their arrest.
Mandy Chigumira prosecuted.

Two Soldiers Jailed 9 Years Each For Illegal Possession Of Ivory

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reportedly fired several high-ranking members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) for allegedly failing to control their subordinates who walked out on him during the handover of military equipment by the Chinese government last week.
According to NewsDay, several low-ranking army officers who were seated in the open abandoned the event and sought shelter on buses following heavy rainfall while Mnangagwa was speaking.
The President, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the ZDF, was speaking during the handover ceremony at Inkomo Mechanised Brigade, a few kilometres outside Harare.
NewsDay reported sources as saying regimental sergeant majors from the Parachute Regiment, Special Air Services and Mechanised Brigade were fired.
The officer commanding Inkomo Barracks Mechanised Brigade was reportedly demoted, while several Majors were transferred and pending court-martial for failing to control their troops. Said a source:

During President Mnangagwa’s speech, a heavy downpour caused troops seated in the open to scramble for cover on a bus.
This was interpreted as disrespect towards the Commander-in-Chief and frankly, quite embarrassing.
Last week, a flash message notified regimental sergeant majors of their dismissal due to their inability to command their troops.
Confusion has arisen as some dismissed individuals have reported for duty.
The abruptness and severity of these dismissals have unsettled many within the ZDF.
The lack of clarity surrounding the specific charges has fuelled frustration and confusion.

Contacted for comment by NewsDay yesterday, ZDF spokesperson Colonel Alphios Makotore said he would respond via email. He was quoted as saying:

I will email you our response. I saw your message and we are processing it.
</blockquote>
However, Makotore had not responded to the questions by the time the story was published.
The dismissals have reportedly caused discontent and low morale within the military.

Mnangagwa Dismisses Top Soldiers | Report

CCC has commended the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF) for safeguarding the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as offering assistance to the civilian authority in times of need over the past 43 years.
In a statement to mark the 2023 Defence Forces’ Day on 15 August, CCC National Spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere, noted that the country’s military has supported the civilian authority in saving lives by delivering humanitarian aid in times of crisis such as in the immediate aftermath of Cyclone Idai.
CCC, however, urged ZDF to serve “the interests of all Zimbabweans by fully complying with [its] constitutional obligation to respect the lives and dignity of the people in the execution of their duties.”
Mahere said if CCC wins the upcoming general elections, the military will never be used to curtail the rights and freedoms of citizens. Read the statement below:

Today, we join the nation in commemorating 43 years since the Zimbabwe Defence Forces came into being.
The constitutionally-defined roles of the Defence Forces are to protect Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, to partake in the design of our shared regional security architecture, to play a role in the preservation of international stability and peace and to offer assistance to the civilian authority in times of need.
Our Defence Forces have distinguished themselves in many of their constitutionally-defined roles. For 43 years, they have safeguarded Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
We take pride in their sterling performances in various peacekeeping missions in Africa and the role they continue to play in aiding the civilian authority to save lives, deliver humanitarian aid and spearhead emergency reconstruction as they did in 2019 in the wake of Cyclone Idai.
However, the Defence Forces’ 43 years of service have been undermined by partisan politics. We note with particular sadness the attempt to poison and politicize the Defence Forces for partisan purposes and repression.
On this day of commemoration, we call on the Defence Forces to remember their constitutional mandate to the people of Zimbabwe.
We ask that they act in a manner that serves the interests of all Zimbabweans by fully complying with their constitutional obligation to respect the lives and dignity of the people in the execution of their duties.
In line with the Constitution, we demand the protection of citizens’ rights and freedoms by the Defence Forces. Our security services must protect not threaten citizens.
The democratic expression of citizens must be safeguarded. We reiterate our call for a Defence Force for everyone.
Under the incoming Citizen Government, weapons and arms of war will never be deployed to support a political party’s partisan interests or impede the citizens’ right to demonstrate peacefully.
Instead, our Defence Forces will support collective national interests taking due cognisance of the fundamental rights and diversity of the citizenry.
The professional standing of the Defence Forces will not be interfered with. The Defence Forces will be given the space to serve the people as prescribed by law.
We will improve the conditions of service of rank and file soldiers. They deserve to earn a living USD wage and conditions of service befitting of the important constitutional role they are mandated to play in our society.

"Soldiers Deserve USD Living Wage", CCC Commemorates Defence Forces Day

Members of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) were reportedly in charge of distributing ZANU PF regalia at President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s campaign rally in Centenary, Mashonaland Central on Saturday.
<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/news/article/200014373/soldiers-dish-out-zanu-pf-regalia">The Standard</a> reported that soldiers in military uniform were in charge of distributing ZANU PF caps and t-shirts some 2km away from the rally venue.
In his address at the rally, Mnangagwa said no party could remove ZANU PF from power. He said:

We are aware of other political parties here in Zimbabwe. They are allowed to realise their desires to rule this country, but I can tell you that it is not easy when ZANU PF is in power.
You are children of freedom fighters, who suffered during the liberation war and we know when we come here you will defend the country’s heritage and retain ZANU PF when we go to the elections on August 23.
If you are paid to cause violence just spend the money quietly because if we know about it, we will deal with you.
</blockquote>
ZANU PF reportedly bussed thousands of supporters to the venue, as has been its custom during previous rallies.
Some of the villagers, who failed to get the free fried chicken and chips, hampers, party regalia and other goodies promised by ZANU PF, were left disgruntled.
At the rally, Mnangagwa received former MDC-T spokesperson, Witness Dube and other MPs who left MDC-T to join ZANU PF.

Soldiers Distribute ZANU PF Regalia At Rally | Report

The government has offered a 400% pay hike for the soldiers and police much to the annoyance of teachers who were offered a 50% increase.
Teachers are currently the lowest-paid civil servants, earning around ZW$36 000 plus a US$120 foreign currency component.
Teachers rejected a 50 per cent increase in their local currency wages during the National Joint Negotiating Council meeting last week.
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Obert_Masaraure">Obert Masaraure</a>, leader of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Amalgamated_Rural_Teachers_Union_of_Zimbabwe">Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ)</a> criticised the government for selectively applying standards. NewsDay quotes him as saying:

The 50 per cent offered to other civil servants including teachers is a joke; unfortunately, we can’t laugh it off because families are starving.
We will not allow government to discriminate against any section of workers.
To that end, we shall force the employer to pay teachers a living wage. US$1,260 is the minimum demand from teachers.
Soldiers have guns but we have our collective force as workers.
The government is warned not to keep on stretching our patience. They will be faced with a tsunami of workers’ protests.
</blockquote>
<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Raymond_Majongwe">Raymond Majongwe</a>, secretary general of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Progressive_Teachers_Union_of_Zimbabwe">Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ)</a>, echoed Masaraure’s remarks. He said:
<blockquote>
We don’t challenge that soldiers have been paid, we celebrate that at least somebody has realised that soldiers are being underpaid but then why then cherry-pick and choose soldiers over the teachers; why not give us the same.
Remember in the past, teachers were the first to be paid. They have turned it around.
They have paid the soldiers first, they have paid the police, they have paid the nurses and teachers who come last in that rank and file. That is unacceptable.

Zimbabwe Congress Of Public Sector Trade Unions (ZCPSTU), organizing secretary, Charles Chinosengwa described the government’s selective awarding of a 400% pay hike to soldiers and police as a divide-and-rule tactic capable of bringing ruin to the education sector.
Observers view the government’s decision to award soldiers and police a 400% wage increase as an attempt to appease the security sector ahead of harmonised elections scheduled for July this year.

Soldiers, Police Get 400% Pay Hike

The High Court has acquitted two members of the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) accused of shooting dead two Mwenezi brothers.
The soldiers, Tapiwanashe Basopo (37) and Collen Ncube (29), who are based at HQ1 Brigade in Bulawayo, were acquitted on Tuesday by Justice Garainesu Mawadze at the High Court in Masvingo.
The two soldiers were deployed to Mijingwe Ranch in Mwenezi when the shooting incident happened.
<h2>The allegations</h2>
It was alleged that Basopo, Ncube, and a third soldier, Chrispen Maphosa (30), who is at large were approached by Olman Nyunyana on 26 December 2019.
Nyunyana complained to the soldiers that his brother Ernest had been severely assaulted by three Matarise brothers on Christmas evening.
Basopo, Ncube and Maphosa offered to track and apprehend the accused brothers.
Maphosa and Basopo armed themselves with AK 47 rifles and dressed in army regalia and proceeded to Shayamabvudzi Business Centre where they arrived at around 9 PM.
They confronted Sifelani who ran home and informed his brothers, Ngonidzashe and Hosiah.
The brothers armed themselves with a knife, machetes, an iron bar, and a screwdriver and went and confronted the soldiers.
A misunderstanding arose and the brothers charged toward the soldiers. Sifelani and Hosiah were then shot dead in the melee.
Sifelani and Hosiah were shot in the chest and head respectively and died on the spot.
Ngonidzashe escaped and reported the matter to the police. ZRP officers teamed up with members of the military police and arrested the three soldiers.
Four live rounds, three spent cartridges, magazines, and two AK47 rifles were recovered.
The State, however, said in court that it did not have enough evidence against the two, and Justice Mawadze cleared them of the charges.
Police are looking for Maphosa after a warrant of arrest was issued by the High Court on 17 March 2022.
<h2>The Ruling</h2>
Justice Mawadze did not clear Maphosa of the charges after noting that he had not reported for work for several months. In his ruling, Justice Mawadze said:
<blockquote>
The State has indicated that there is not enough evidence to get a verdict and my judgment is as follows. Maphosa remains on the warrant of arrest issued on March 17, 2022.
Basopo and Ncube are hereby cleared of the murder and any other related charges and are hereby acquitted.
The two AK47 rifles being held as exhibits will remain since the State intends to try Maphosa.
</blockquote>
Justice Mawadze said Basopo and Ncube had attended court hearings consistently and urged them to behave appropriately as members of the uniformed forces.

Two Soldiers Who Shot And Killed Two Mwenezi Brothers Acquitted

Teachers’ unions have accused the Government of double standards after it awarded soldiers a 37% pay increase at a time it is silent about reviewing civil servants’ salaries.
According to the Ministry of Defence, Security and War Veterans Affairs’ correspondence, soldiers received a salary increment effective 1 April.
The circular also shows that soldiers’ allowances would be reviewed according to grades. It stated that the review was necessitated by inflationary pressures. The circular reads in part:

Be advised that the following deliberations have been made between Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), Defence Forces Service Commission (FSC), Ministry of Defence (MOD) and war veterans and Treasury, the DFSC has approved part of the implementation of the military concept and related allowance for colonels and below.
</blockquote>
In 2020, the Government drew the ire of doctors, teachers and nurses after it awarded security services personnel a pay hike whilst ignoring other government employees.
Responding to requests for their comments from The Standard, Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and army spokesperson Alphios Makotore demanded questions in writing. Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri:

You may have to send your questions in writing. Security and defence matters cannot be discussed over the phone.
</blockquote>
Meanwhile, teachers’ unions have expressed their unhappiness over the move alleging unfair treatment from the Government.
Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) president Obert Masaraure said:

The government is very aware that the military plays a key role to preserve power and we don’t care about who is in power.
What we need is food on the table and that can be done by improving the welfare of the teachers.
</blockquote>
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Takavafira Zhou said the Government views teachers as unworthy of its consideration or respect.

Govt Awards Soldiers 37 Per Cent Salary Hike

Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) has warned members of the public to be on the lookout for rogue soldiers deployed countrywide on different assignments who are robbing people at gunpoint, The Standard reports.
In a statement released by ZNA spokesperson Colonel AlphiosMakotore, ZNA said it was worried about the robbery incidences that are reportedly being committed by the undisciplined members of the force and said:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe National Army has noted with concern the increasing number of incidents where some rogue and undisciplined members of the force deployed on various duties around the country are wantonly engaging in criminal activities thereby bringing the name of the organisation into disrepute.
 
In view of the recent cases of criminal activities by members of the force, the ZNA would like to put it on record for the umpteenth time that as an organisation, it does not in any way condone such behaviour nor any forms of criminality committed by any of its members purporting to be on official duty.
Incidents of armed robberies reported at Gwebi River bridge layby along Harare-Chinhoyi Road on January 6, 2021 and in Mutawatawa, Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe, on January 19, 2021, will be thoroughly investigated and the culprits will be brought to book.</blockquote>
Armed robbery cases have been on the rise of late. The latest incident occurred early this month at Gwebi River along the Chinhoyi Harare Highway where armed robbers managed to disarm the security guards that were transporting $2.5 million cash and got away with it before they were arrested.

ZNA Warns The Public To Be On The Lookout For Rogue Soldiers

Armed soldiers and police officers are patrolling the streets of Harare’s central business district following violent protests by opposition supporters on Wednesday. The authorities responded by deploying the army which used live bullets and in the process at least three civilians were gunned down. Most businesses are closed down although there is no sign of any organised protests. A truckload of armed police officers and soldiers are reported to be driving around the city ordering people to behave themselves.

Soldiers Patrolling The Streets Of Harare, Ordering People To Behave

A study which was carried out by the National Aids Council (NAC) and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) alleges that members of the military are demanding free copulation from prostitutes as a reward for removing former president Robert Mugabe. Mugabe finally <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/03/16/mugabe-reveals-why-he-resigned/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">resigned as Head of State</a> after 37 years when the Zimbabwe Defence Forces launched a <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/11/19/military-takeover-planned-weeks-advance-china-usa-sadc-knew/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">military intervention in November 2017</a>.
Excerpts of the report which is titled “Knowledge, attitudes and practices of police officers towards key populations in Zimbabwe” read,
<blockquote>Soldiers have become the menace in various areas as they demanded free [copulation] especially in the wake of the recent <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2017/12/18/army-announces-end-operation-restore-legacy-zrp-resume-normal-duties-soldiers-return-barracks/" rel="noopener" target="_blank">Operation Restore Legacy.</a>
They claimed to have brought freedom to the country and as such should be rewarded. They were accused of not paying for the [copulation] while using their guns to intimidate the [prostitutes]. For fear of the guns, the [prostitutes] end up giving in. When they asked the soldiers to pay; some soldiers would retort; ‘Wakaihoda kupi’</blockquote>
The report also implicated ZRP officers in the abuse of the prostitutes.
<blockquote>[prostitutes] are always in a hurry and fear detection by police officers. In this regard, they do not have time to negotiate safe copulation thereby increasing chances of HIV infection. While the relationship with police officers has improved, there are some police officers who still demanded free copulation particularly from new and young [prostitutes] who may not be experienced and knowledgeable about their rights.</blockquote>

Report Alleges That Soldiers Are Demanding Free Copulation For Removing Mugabe

The government is reported to be working on improving the conditions of service for soldiers who are said to be unhappy with the current situation. Senior commanders in the military are reported to have received several anonymous letters from soldiers who accuse the top brass of being the only beneficiaries of the November 2017 Military intervention which resulted in the fall of former President Robert Mugabe. Sources who spoke to the weekly publication, The Zimbabwean Independent, said:
<blockquote>The initial phase will include construction of 20 000 houses for the soldiers and ultimately the project should yield 60 000 houses for other all security personnel, which means the army, police and other security services.
A team of senior military commanders has been meeting stakeholders in Zimbabwe and even travelled to South Africa in January to finalise the project. The military will also look at how salaries can be improved, address the transport situation and the touchy bonus issue.
…Commanders are taking seriously things like anonymous letters written to them. The soldiers who wrote the letters are demanding to also be rewarded for carrying out Operation Restore Legacy which led to Mugabe’s removal. They think that only the top brass benefitted from it, through promotions, associated remuneration and perks.</blockquote>

<h2>1. December 2008</h2>
In December 2008, soldiers, from Cranborne Barracks staged an impromptu protest, shouting at the bank were they were queuing all day. They were joined by hundreds of civilians at the corner of Robert Mugabe and Fourth Street. Armed riot police arrived to break up the demonstration which resulted in violence breaking out. In the same month soldiers looted and vandalised shops in Harare.

<h2>2.March 2011</h2>
A group of 22 rogue soldiers stormed a lodge in Harare, ransacked rooms and raped at least two women. Two soldiers; Fungai Kashitigu, 31, and Kennedy Chitsaka, 30, who were both based at the Mounted Unit Regiment at Inkomo Barracks were charged with rape and robbery. There were reports that a major investigation involving regular police, military police and the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) was underway to track down 20 other soldiers who were believed to have deserted.

<h2>3. September 2012</h2>
In September 2012, soldiers beat up tout (Hwindis) at Charge Office bus terminus near Harare Central Police Station. The soldiers accused the Hwindis of assaulting their colleagues. The incident inspired Killer T to write the song “Makarova Ganaz”. Speaking to the Daily News, then Police spokesperson James Sabau said four soldiers were arrested.

A soldier allegedly ran amok at an Allied Bank branch in Harare after he was dissatisfied with the bank’s service delivery. The soldier and his accomplices allegedly assaulted a manager at Allied Bank’s Travel Centre branch corner Jason Moyo (Avenue) and Third Street.

4 times soldiers have wrecked havoc in Harare's CBD

Yesterday soldiers from the 1 Independent Battallion allegedly went on a rampage beating up civilians in Beitridge.   This happened after another soldier lost his firearm, an AK-47, while having sex in the bush.
The soldiers allegedly went on a beating spree, assaulting anyone they suspected of having stolen the gun.  Most of the assaulted people were at Dulivhadzimo bus terminus.  However, National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi professed ignorance of the incident saying:
<blockquote>I am not even aware of that.</blockquote>
