The United States of America has redeployed 500 troops to Somalia to help in the fight against militant Islamists.
The redeployment came after former US President Donald Trump ordered the withdrawal of the troops in December 2020 following years of strained relations with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s predecessor Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmajo” who was voted out of office by Somalia’s lawmakers.
The US considered Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed “Farmajo” to be a failure both in terms of governance and the campaign against Islamist militant groups al-Shabab and the much smaller Somali branch of the Islamic State (IS) group.
The US Africa Command (Africom) said it will maintain a “small, persistent US military presence” in Somalia.
This comes as Somalis have experienced a surge of Islamist attacks since the departure of U.S. troops. 
The number of al-Shabab attacks rose from 1 771 to 2 072 in the year following the US pull-out, according to The Africa Centre for Strategic Studies.
Last month, security officials said that about 450 al-Shabab fighters attacked an African Union base in southern Somalia, killing at least 40 Burundian soldiers.
United Nations experts have described al-Shabab as al-Qaeda’s most powerful and wealthy affiliate. They estimate it has as many as 12 000 fighters and the ability to raise a monthly revenue of about $10m (£8m).
A previous campaign of US air strikes disrupted the group’s activities, preventing senior militants from moving around and making it more difficult for al-Shabab infantry to carry out big attacks.
Some are sceptical about the return of the US military, highlighting that ordinary people have become victims of US drone attacks.
The UAE, Qatar, the UK, the European Union, Eritrea, Uganda, Kenya, Djibouti and others have also been involved.
This has led to a lack of coordination within the security forces. In some cases, troops trained by a particular country become aligned with a particular political group.
In April 2021, fierce fighting erupted between different factions of the security forces in Mogadishu sparking fears of a return to the catastrophic civil war of the 1990s.
Rumour is rife in Somaliland that America is planning to build a military base in Berbera.
There are plenty of reasons for the US to be interested in Somaliland, a territory that is in a highly strategic location, according to <a href="https://www.the-star.co.ke/news/africa/2022-06-02-us-troops-back-in-somalia-to-fight-al-shabab/">The Star</a>.

i). Its 800km (500-mile) coastline stretches along one of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
ii). Its neighbour, Djibouti, is “full” offoreign military bases, including Chinese and American ones.
iii). Berbera offers an attractive alternative as it is close to some of the world’s most unstable places, including Yemen, Somalia and Ethiopia, which has been a key US ally in the “War on Terror”.

Meanwhile, Somalia regards Somaliland as an integral part of Somalia which means the U.S. has to be cautious.

America Redeploys Troops To Somalia After Withdrawing Them During Trump's Era

At least four people were killed in an ongoing attack by Al-Shabaab militants who laid siege to a popular hotel in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu overnight.
Gunfire and explosions could still be heard more than 12 hours after the militants stormed the hotel near the presidential palace in a hail of bullets, AFP reported on Monday citing Mohamed Dahir a national security agency official.
Mohamed Dahir told AFP the gunmen were holed up in a room at the Villa Rose surrounded by government forces. He said:

So far we have confirmed the death of four people.
Very soon the situation will return to normal.
</blockquote>
He added that others had been rescued from the besieged venue.
Dahir added that Government officials were among others injured. 
The Villa Rose is frequented by MPs and located in a secure central part of the capital just a few blocks from the office of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.
Al-Shabaab, a militant group affiliated with Al-Qaeda that has been trying to overthrow Somalia’s central government for 15 years, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Police said the gunmen rushed into the hotel in Bondhere district at around 8 pm on Sunday and an operation was underway to “eliminate” them.
More than 12 hours later, witnesses near the scene described still hearing loud explosions and gunfire.

At Least 4 Dead In Hotel Siege In Somalia

Zimbabwe has lost its right to vote at the UN General Assembly due to nonpayment of financial contributions to the UN. The matter came to light in a letter dated 13 January that lists the 10 member states that have lost the right to vote at the UN General Assembly and Zimbabwe is there together with Somalia and 6 other African Countries.
The letter stated that:

1. At present. 10 Member States are in arrears under the terms of Article 19 of the Chiney of the United Nations, which states: A Member of the United Nations which is in arrears in the payment of its financial contributions to the Organization shall have no vote in the General Assembly if the amount of its arrears equals or exceeds the amount of the contributions due from it for the preceding two full years. The General Assembly may nevertheless, permit such a Member to vote if it is satisfied that the failure to pay is due to conditions beyond the control of the Member
2. The minimum payments necessary to reduce the amounts owed by those Member States on their contributions so that they remain below the gross amount assessed for the preceding two full years (2019 and 20201 art as follows:

Zimbabwe Loses Rights To Vote At The UN General Assembly Due To Debts

The Warriors beat Somalia 3-1 in a 2022 World Cup qualifier played at the National Sports Stadium in Harare on Tuesday afternoon.
All the goals were scored in the second half with Zimbabwe’s goals coming from French-based Marshall Munetsi, Leicester City striker Admiral Muskwe and Kaizer Chiefs winger Khama Billiat.
Today’s victory gave The Warriors a 3-2 aggregate win over the Ocean Stars and Zimbabwe will now participate in the group stages of the World Cup to be hosted by Qatar in 2022.
The Warriors huffed and puffed in the first half with very few clearcut chances. They dominated the entire 45 minutes with the Somali goalkeeper making a few excellent saves to go to half time 0-0.
Zimbabwe drew first blood halfway in the second half when Munetsi scored an acrobatic goal from a corner kick. However, the lead was shortlived following a Somali goal against the run of play when Teenage Hadebe made a dreadful error to play the opposition through on goal.
Two quickfire goals in the final minutes of the match first from a deflected Muskwe free-kick and a Khama Billiat strike gave Zimbabwe the victory.

Zimbabwe Beat Somalia 3-1 To Qualify For World Cup Group Stages

The Somali national football team is bullish ahead of tomorrow’s encounter with The Warriors in a World Cup qualifier at the National Sports Stadium.
Somalia stunned Zimbabwe last week by winning 1-0, their first victory in a World Cup qualifier. Moreover, Somalia was playing at home away from home as the match was played in Djibouti.
Somalia centre-half Mohamud Ali, a driving instructor by trade in the English city of Manchester, said of their 1-0 win over the Warriors:
<blockquote>It’s a giant-killing when you think about it. It was very emotional, very emotional, just knowing that millions of people would be watching the game in every single corner of the world.
My brother gave the assist [for Anwar Sayid Ali’s 86th-minute winning goal] and we just had a moment hugging on the pitch.

The Somali national team has been strengthened by an influx of ex-pats based in Italy, Canada, USA, Norway, Finland, England, Netherlands and Qatar.

'Miracle Men', Somalia Fancy Themselves Against Zimbabwe

The second leg of the Qatar 2022 World Cup, preliminary round qualifier between Zimbabwe and Somalia is on Wednesday, 11 September 2019 at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
The match was initially scheduled for Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo but due some fixture changes it was moved to Harare.
Kick-off time is at 3 pm.
