English Premier League clubs Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton have parted ways with their head coaches, Gary O’Neil and Russell Martin, following disappointing defeats over the weekend.
O’Neil was dismissed after a dramatic 2-1 loss to Ipswich Town on Saturday at Molineux Stadium. This defeat left Wolves in 19th place in the Premier League table, four points behind 17th-placed Crystal Palace.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Wolves Chairman Jeff Shi said: “We’re very grateful to Gary for all of his effort, dedication and hard work during his time at the club, and we wish him and his team the best of luck for the future.”
Meanwhile, Southampton have sacked manager Russell Martin following their heavy 5-0 defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.
This result leaves Southampton at the bottom of the Premier League, nine points adrift of safety. Under-21s manager Simon Rusk will step in as interim manager, starting with the Carabao Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on Wednesday.
Martin’s departure was announced by the club less than 90 minutes after the final whistle. Appointed in June 2023, he successfully led Southampton to promotion via the Championship play-offs but has since recorded only one victory and suffered 13 defeats out of 16 Premier League matches.

Current U21s manager Simon Rusk will take charge of the team on an interim basis until we announce a permanent replacement.

English Premier League (EPL) club Southampton has sacked team manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl, following a 4-1 home defeat to Newcastle.
Southampton is 18th in the Premier League table having lost six of its last nine games.
The 55-year-old Austrian was appointed coach in 2018 and managed to maintain the club’s status in the English top flight for four consecutive seasons.
His tenure will also be remembered for two 9-0 losses — at home to Leicester in October 2019 and at Manchester United in February 2021. A club statement read:

Southampton Football Club can confirm it has parted company with Men’s First Team Manager Ralph Hasenhüttl.
First Team Assistant Coach Richard Kitzbichler has also today left the club.
Hasenhüttl, who was appointed in December 2018, departs having made a significant contribution to the club, overseeing some memorable results and also playing a key role in the development of our club infrastructure, identity and playing squad.
However, we now believe it is an appropriate time to make a change.
Everyone involved with the club would like to express their sincere thanks to Ralph for all of his efforts, as well as the unwavering commitment he has shown throughout his time as manager.
First Team Lead Coach Rubén Sellés will take charge of the side on an interim basis for our game on Wednesday night. The club will be announcing a permanent replacement in due course.
