Dozens of people were killed during a stampede that occurred following violent protests over referee decisions during a football match in Guinea’s second-largest city, N’Zerekore, reported <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2024/12/2/dozens-feared-dead-after-stampede-breaks-out-at-guinea-football-match">Al Jazeera</a>.
Fans dissatisfied with the referee’s decisions threw stones, sparking violent clashes that resulted in a deadly stampede, leaving at least 56 people dead.
According to a government statement published as a news ticker on national television on Monday, November 02, “protests of dissatisfaction with refereeing decisions led to stone-throwing by supporters, resulting in fatal stampedes.”
Hospital services have put the provisional death toll at 56.
The clash began when supporters of the visiting team, Labe, hurled stones onto the pitch, prompting the police to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
After the football match, demonstrators also vandalised and set fire to the N’Zerekore police station, escalating the violence.
Guinea’s Prime Minister, Bah Oury, condemned the violence, urging calm and announcing that the government would release further information as it gathered details.
The match was part of a tournament organised in honour of Guinea’s military leader, Mamady Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 coup and remains in charge despite international pressure to restore civilian governance.
Guinea’s opposition coalition, ANAD, condemned the tournament, calling it an attempt to promote Doumbouya’s “illegal and inappropriate candidacy” as he prepares for a potential presidential run.

Several young people desperate for work were left screaming in pain and others limping after being stamped on or beaten up by security guards at a Government-organised job event on Wednesday.
The Public Service Commission (PSC) held a Job Fair at Heritage Village, Liberation City in Harare, next to Tynwald Primary School, where thousands of graduates were in attendance.
<a href="https://www.irishexaminer.com/world/arid-41284999.html">The Irish Examiner</a> reported chaos as job seekers rushed to register for potential vacancies, but no serious injuries were reported.
According to the PSC, thousands of young people in the 19 to 30 year-age group turned up for the fair, holding envelopes with their CVs and college certificates.
They hoped to be registered on a database of job seekers in the PSC and Government ministries.
People stamped on each other in the rush to enter a large hall where the registration was taking place and security guards used batons to restore order, but people still surged forward.

PSC Chairman Vincent Hungwe said the Job Fair was a pleasant challenge because of the overwhelming number of graduates that came. Yet, their qualifications proved that the country had excess requisite skills enough to serve in all sectors.
Secretary to Service Commissions, Tsitsi Choruma said that the Job Fair served as a timely succession plan to infuse into the Government, young graduates such as doctors, female engineers, etc.
Meanwhile, Commissioner in the Public Service Commission Larry Mavima told reporters that the decision by the Commission to target the 19 to 30-year-old group was driven by the Commission’s desire to encourage qualified youths to serve the Government and further develop their skills early in life.
Zimbabwe has an acute shortage of formal jobs and millions of people eke out a living by vending and other informal activities.

Chaos As Job Seekers Stampede For Work At PSC Job Fair

Two people were killed during a stampede after the police disrupted a performance by Zimdancehall musician Winky D at the 2022 CASTLE Tankard, Borrowdale Race Course on Saturday night.
Unconfirmed reports suggest that 4 members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) stormed the stage, forcing the show to end abruptly.
Angry fans responded by throwing cans and bottles resulting in a stampede as fans tried to escape from the venue.
ZRP national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the death of two people. In a statement, Nyathi said:

The Police express condolences to the bereaved families and assures the public that inquiries are in progress.
