Former Dynamos and Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambga has been selected to lead locally-based Warriors players in an exhibition match against Namibia at President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration on Monday.
He will be assisted by Sheasham coach Lizwe Sweswe who has previously coached FC Platinum and Bulawayo Chiefs.
The Warriors of Zimbabwe will take on the Brave Warriors of Namibia at the National Sports Stadium, the venue for the inauguration, tomorrow.
The match will be the Warriors’ first international match since FIFA lifted its suspension of the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) from international football in July this year.
The Normalisation Committee appointed by FIFA to run the affairs of ZIFA until July 2024, is organising tomorrow’s game.
Despite recently advertising the Warriors coach post, the Normalisation Committee hasn’t yet started the recruitment process.
Speaking in a recent interview with a local daily publication, ZIFA Normalisation Committee boss Lincoln Mutasa said that more than 200 coaches have applied for jobs to coach Zimbabwe’s national football teams; the Warriors, Mighty Warriors, Young Warriors and the Young Mighty Warriors.
Mutasa, however, refused to reveal some of the coaches who have submitted their CVs.
Meanwhile, “Mhofu”, as Chidzambga is affectionately known by football fans, is the only coach to take Zimbabwe to two different AFCON finals (2004 and 2019).
The match between the Warriors and the Brave Warriors will kick off at 15:00.

Chidzambga Appointed Warriors Coach For ED Inauguration Match

Football Legend Peter Ndlovu has in an emotional interview with Newsday said he became what he is because of former Warriors Coach Sunday Chidzambga/Chidzambwa who recently announced his retirement from coaching football.
The former English Premiership league champion star said local football authorities were supposed to put a statue of Chidzambga Rufaro Stadium as an honour to Marimo for his contribution to local football. Ndlovu said:
<blockquote>I became what I am because of that man (Chidzambwa) made me believe that I can do it,” the former English Premier League star said.

Chidzambwa led the Warriors to their first-ever AFCON in 2004 and to the very last one so far in 2019.

Former Warriors coach, Sunday Chidzambga’s resignation on Wednesday has been received with joy by some football fans.
Chidzambga quit the national team abruptly, leaving soccer pundits dumbfounded. He had signed a new deal barely 48 hours before he dropped the bombshell.
However, speaking to Post Sport, Warriors fans said that the humiliation in Egypt was high noon for “Mhofu”. A fan, Tafadzwa Moyo said:
<blockquote>It was long overdue. The team performed poorly but for him to resign two days after naming the provisional squad for the CHAN qualifier against Mauritius makes no sense at all.
He should have resigned while he was in Egypt and allowed his successor to name the players he wants to work with.
He is a failure. He should not have named the CHAN squad if he knew he was going to resign.</blockquote>
Another Warriors fan, Marlene Takaidza opined that Chidzambga had to go home to rest. She said:
<blockquote>Sunday must go home and rest. What do we expect from a 67- year old man? Warriors did not do well under his tutelage. He is too old to coach. Football is dynamic. Zifa must give opportunities to young coaches like Norman Mapeza.</blockquote>
Tenax FC goalkeepers’ coach Eddy Jewu told the Post that Mhofu always failed to produce the desired results. He said:
<blockquote>The coach has tried his level best over the years, failing to survive group stage each time Zimbabwe qualified for AFCON when he was in the driving seat.
When it comes to coaching trying is not good enough, you have to do it(results). The old school approach has been his weakness which couldn’t yield good results and performance.
But kudos to the old man for work done so far given the pathetic welfare of players, unfriendly football environment and bad administration.
I feel sorry for our national team coaches.</blockquote>

"Chidzambga's Resignation Was Long Over Due", Fans Speak

Sunday Chidzambga on Wednesday resigned from his role as Warriors coach, leaving soccer pundits and fans bewildered by his sudden departure.
“Mhofu”, as Chidzambga is called in football circles, informed Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) president, Felton Kamambo that he was quitting with immediate effect.
According to a Chronicle report, Mhofu threw in the towel after he received information that ZIFA was set to dismiss his technical team soon after the CHAN game against Mauritius on Sunday.
Chidzambga was set to meet the ZIFA leadership after completing a Warriors training session at the Yadah Hotel complex on Wednesday afternoon to air his concerns.
The meeting, which was initially scheduled for 2 pm, was moved to 3 pm and again to the evening but Chidzambga had made up his mind to quit.
On Monday Chidzambga had told The Herald that so many things were going on but he was reluctant to give more details. He said then:
<blockquote>I am told the players should be getting into camp (today). Unfortunately, I cannot comment any further at the moment because so many things are happening.
For now, you can talk to either the team manager or the people at Zifa.</blockquote>
Mhofu resigned just two days after agreeing to a new deal to take charge of the Warriors.
Meanwhile, Rahman Gumbo will take charge Sunday’s match against Mauritius and will be assisted by Lloyd Mutasa.

Reason Behind Sunday Chidzambga's Sudden Departure Revealed

Zimbabwe national football team coach, Sunday Chidzambga says that he hopes to get an opportunity to guide the Warriors in world cup qualification.
He was speaking in an interview with local radio Star FM where he also revealed that he is open to leaving his post if the authorities say so. Said Chidzambga:
<blockquote>If the authorities bring a new coach, they’re most welcome, maybe it’s time for me to go. But the honest truth is that I wanted to go to the World Cup.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, the Deputy Information Minister Energy Mutodi has called for Chidzambga’s dismissal. Using his Twitter handle, Mutodi said:
<blockquote>Warriors of shame: after courting President ED to fundraise for the team, we are shocked and displeased by their dismal performance.
It’s clear the coach is a spent force. Players are weak and helpless. It’s time for new players, new coach…of all teams ndombolo hit us hardest!</blockquote>
The Warriors exited the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in humiliating fashion after getting just one point from three games and losing 4-0 to the DRC in the final match.

Chidzambga Intends To Guide Warriors To The World Cup

Warriors coach, Sunday Chidzambga has picked his final squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, according to Voice of America.
“Mhofu” had to split his 32-man squad into two, with one group playing in the Cosafa Cup’s third and fourth playoff match against the Crocodiles of Lesotho in South Africa and the other group travelling to Nigeria for a friendly match.
The Warriors gaffer left South Africa with 18 players for Egypt via the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Nigeria where they will play the Super Eagles.
Chidzambga left four players to compete in the COSAFA Cup alongside assistant coaches, Rahman Gumbo and Lloyd Mutasa.
The four will travel later with the assistant coaches to join the rest of the squad.
Players who featured heavily during the qualifiers have been retained, with a few additions in the form of goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze, Nyasha Mushekwi and Thabani Kamusoko.
Among those retained is captain Knowledge Musona, Khama Billiart, Marvelous Nakamba, Tendayi Darikwa, Alec Mudimu, George Chigova and Evans Rusike.

Chidzambga Selects Warriors Squad for Africa Cup of Nations - Report

Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambga has left the Warriors camp in Durban, South Africa after the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) granted him compassionate leave.
Chidzabgwa lost his father, Ezekiel, who died on Sunday at the age of 98.
This was revealed by ZIFA communications manager Xolisani Gwesela. He said in a statement:
<blockquote>The Zimbabwe Football Association extends its deepest condolences to our senior men coach…Chidzambwa who lost his father…Ezekiel today (yesterday).
The late…Chidzambwa was 98 years old. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chidzambwa family in this painful period. May his dear soul rest in eternal peace.</blockquote>
Former Warriors manager, Sharif Musa also expressed his condolences. He told the Daily News:
<blockquote>I have just learnt with sadness and sorrow the sad news of the passing away of the father of our country’s senior national team coach Sunday Chidzambwa,” Mussa told the Daily News.
My deepest condolences to him, his young brother Misheck and the Chidzambwa family. My thoughts and prayers are with him (Sunday) and his family. I hope and pray for him to have strength during this sad and difficult times.</blockquote>
The Warriors are in South Africa for the COSAFA tournament. They beat the Comoros 2-0 on Saturday in their first match.
Chidzambga is expected to rejoin the team on Thursday ahead of their departure for Nigeria where they will play the Super Eagles in a friendly international on June 8.

Chidzambga's Father Dies Aged 98, ZIFA Grants Coach Compassionate Leave

Warriors coach Sunday “Mhofu” Chidzambga is not worried over the absence of some of his main players from training on Tuesday.
The Warriors are in camp in preparation for the COSAFA and AFCON finals to be played next month.
The team had a training session at the Yadah Complex in Harare on Tuesday. Speaking to the media from the complex’s stadium, Chidzambga said:
<blockquote>As the first day of training, I am really impressed, especially by the players’ attitude.
They are showing some positive mentality and are ready to prepare and give what they have for the nation.
These players have just travelled, so we just loosened up and had some slight feel of the ball. Overall, I am impressed by their attitude.</blockquote>
Some of the Warriors who took part in the training session include goalkeepers George Chigova, Edmore Sibanda and Talbert Shumba. Elvis Chipezezeze was expected from South Africa later on Tuesday.
According to the Chronicle, the other players involved included Lawrence Mhlanga, Byron Madzokere, Devine Lunga, Ronald Pfumbidzai, Danny Phiri, Butholezwe Ncube, Ovidy Karuru, Richard Hachiro, Talent Chawapihwa, Leeroy Mavhunga, Thabani Kamusoko, Evans Rusike, Tino Kadewere as well as Knox Mtizwa.

Chidzambga Says He's Impressed By Warriors' Attitude

Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambga says he is having a positive headache ahead of Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Congo as the players are fighting hard to impress.
Mhofu was taking his charges through their paces on their third training session at Harare International Schools in Harare.
Nottingham Forest fullback Tendayi Darikwa is part of the squad after arriving in the country in the afternoon from his England base. Said Chidzambga:
<blockquote>The boys are raring to go. I have been impressed by their desire during the training session.
It’s going to be difficult for us as coaches to come up with the first eleven judging by how the players are performing at training.
Our supporters should come out in numbers and cheer the boys. We really need their support.</blockquote>
The Warriors to avoid defeat to pull through to the finals in Egypt in June.

Chidzambga To Have Selection 'Headache'

The ZIFA Executive Committee has unanimously agreed to renew Sunday Chidzambwa’s contract as senior national team head coach.
Chidzambwa did not have a contract for the last three months with his contract having expired at the end of December last year. Chidzambwa is the first coach to take the Warriors to the AFCON finals.

The Warriors will play Mauritius in the second round zonal qualifiers for the 2020 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) finals. The draw was made at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
If Zimbabwe progresses to the third and final qualifying round, it will meet the winner between neighbours South Africa and Lesotho.
The dates for the finals will be announced in due course but the tournament will be held on Ethiopia early next year.
Warriors coach Sunday Chidzambga said that the tournament is good for the development and exposure for locally-based players. He said:
<blockquote>This is a good tournament for development, it’s good for exposure. It helps the locally-based players express themselves and it also gives us an opportunity to see the upcoming talents that we can consider for the senior national team.
But I have noticed we have a big problem in Zimbabwe, which has also impacted on the results. All the good players that distinguish themselves in our league will be plucked out to South Africa, and other lucrative leagues every year, and we are left to start all over again.
Naturally this means we have to produce more good players and this is a challenge to the local clubs.</blockquote>
The CHAN tournament is held every other year and is reserved for players who ply their trade in their respective leagues.
