Forty (40) percent of Zimbabweans are willing to accept “political gifts” ahead of the upcoming elections, even if they say they will still vote for their preferred candidate, a recent survey has shown.
According to a pre-election survey conducted by the Public Policy and Research Institute of Zimbabwe (PRIZ), an independent think tank based in Bulawayo, only 11% of the respondents said they will take the “gifts” and vote for the candidate offering the bribe.
This means 51% of the respondents are open to receiving bribes from politicians.
According to PRIZ, for the pre-election poll, respondents or potential electorate aged 18 and above who are eligible to vote in all 10 provinces of Zimbabwe were sought.
Face-to-face interviews were conducted, with respondents replying in their preferred language, and at least 200 respondents from each province were chosen, giving PRIZ a sample size of 2689 respondents. Read the survey results:

Respondents were asked about how they would react to being bribed by the contesting candidates to influence their choice.
44 percent say they would not take the bribe and they will vote for their choice, 40 percent say they would take the bribe but continue and vote for their preferred candidate while 11 percent would take a bribe and vote for the bribing candidate.
This represents an alarming 51 percent of the respondents that would accept and receive “political gifts”.

The Electoral Act says bribery involves someone who:
<blockquote>
gives, lends or procures or agrees to give, lend or procure or offers or promises to procure or to endeavour to procure, any money to or for any person on behalf of a voter, or to or for any other person in order to induce a voter to vote or refrain from voting, or who corruptly does any such act as aforesaid on account of such voter having voted or refrained from voting at any election.

A political commentator, Iphithule Maphosa, told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/majority-of-zimbabweans-willing-to-accept-political-gifts-ahead-of-election/">CITE</a> that Zimbabwe has experienced some of the highest prevalence of bribery and commercialisation of elections adding that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has turned a blind eye to the vice due to its impartiality where ZANU PF is involved. Said Maphosa:

It is therefore not surprising that once again vote buying is still a concern in the August 23 elections.
The law notwithstanding, divorcing money and food from politics in Zimbabwe remains a hard nut to crack because some people are hungry and need that money or food.
Look at how people scramble for the ZANU PF bread or Chicken Inn (fried chips and chicken) at ZANU PF rallies. It signifies that some people are desperate but that cannot be condoned.
Then for the opposition, which doesn’t offer food at its rallies, some people have been heard saying they are hungry and didn’t get food. It’s puzzling.

Majority Of Zimbabweans Willing To Accept "Bribes" From Election Candidates - Survey

Self-exiled former ZANU PF Politburo member Jonathan Moyo has dismissed a recent survey by the London-based SABI Strategy Group showing CCC leader Nelson Chamisa will defeat President Emmerson Mnangagwa in elections scheduled for later this year, reported <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/jonathan-moyo-scoffs-at-survey-showing-voters-favour-chamisa-over-mnangagwa-says-its-fatal-desperation/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>.
Moyo said the survey by SABI Strategy Group is a “fatal desperation” that lacks objectivity.
According to the survey, if the 2023 general elections were to be held now, Chamisa would garner 53% of the vote, Mnangagwa 40% and other parties 7%.
SABI Strategy Group used a 15-minute questionnaire where potential voters were asked: “Thinking ahead to the next presidential election, which candidate will you vote for?”
The pollsters said they used a nationally representative sample of 1 000 registered voters.
But Moyo argued that the survey was not independent, and therefore “phoney”. He said:

Who gave them 1000 phone numbers of registered voters?
London’s allegedly independent ‘SABI Strategy Group’ paid to do the phone survey, fraudulently presented as ‘fieldwork’ as it smiled to the bank with dirty Oppenheimer money is in fact a partner of Brenthurst Foundation and is thus not independent at all. Phoney!

The survey also established that 47% of the voters believe the 2023 election will not be free and fair while 38% believed it will be fair.
ZANU PF has since dismissed the survey as flawed, saying it is biased towards the opposition.

Jonathan Moyo Dismisses Survey Showing Voters Prefer Chamisa over Mnangagwa

The Zimbabwe Democratic Institute (ZDI), a human rights watchdog, says President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has a worse track record in constricting civic space ahead of general elections, compared to that of his predecessor, the late former president Robert Mugabe.
More than 200 Statutory Instruments have been promulgated since 2017, when Mnangagwa replaced Mugabe following a popular military coup, to date.
According to the ZDI report titled: Civic Space Contestation Ahead of 2023, Mnangagwa has perpetuated Mugabe’s culture of stifling civic space. Part of the report reads:

The government under President Mnangagwa has presented a lot of amendments and legislation including the Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 1 and 2, the Patriotic Bill, Cyber and Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act and the Private Voluntary Organisations Bill (PVO) Bill.
This shows that Mnangagwa is walking in the footsteps of his predecessor, the former president Robert Mugabe. The Cyber and Data Protection Act is the latest law to threaten online freedom.
The Act is most likely to be used as a way to stifle the efforts of journalists, online activists and pressure groups in tracking down, monitoring and reporting malpractices prior and during the 2023 elections.

ZDI says it made an analysis of the civic space between 2014-2021 by contrasting Mugabe’s final four years in power ahead of the 2018 elections, and Mnangagwa’s initial four years into power ahead of the 2023 elections.
The report says the findings showed a two percent increase in the civic space and state freedom during Mnangagwa’s first year in power, compared to Mugabe in 2014.
However, 2019 saw a 13% decline in state freedom from 44% in 2014 under Mugabe to 31% in 2019, which was also Mnangagwa’s second year in power.
The following year — 2020 — saw a hostile environment, with civic liberties at 32% under Mugabe in 2016 and 29% under Mnangagwa in 2020.
