WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus and other UN staff were at Sanaa’s airport in Yemen when Israeli air strikes began on Thursday, reported <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/clyj88rye1jo">BBC</a>.
At least six people were killed in the air strikes, with the Houthi-run Saba news agency reporting three deaths at the airport and 30 injuries, while another three were killed and 10 injured in Hodeidah province.
Israel’s military said it carried out “intelligence-based strikes on military targets” in Yemen, including the airport, power stations, and ports.
In comments shortly after the strikes, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it would “continue to cut off the terror arm of the Iranian axis of evil until we complete the job”, adding “we are only just starting with [the Houthis]”.
The WHO’s Tedros said the airport’s air traffic control tower, departure lounge, and runway were damaged, delaying the departure of UN staff.
The Houthis condemned the strikes as “barbaric” and vowed continued confrontations with Israel and the U.S. until the Gaza conflict ends.
Iran condemned the strikes as a violation of international peace and security.
Houthi rebels have been attacking Israel since the first months of the Gaza war, which began in October 2023.
A Houthi missile strike injured more than a dozen people in Israel last week.
Israel has carried out intermittent strikes against Houthis in retaliation.
Early on Friday, the IDF reported that one missile fired from Yemen was intercepted before crossing into Israeli territory.
Local reports from the Sanaa airport suggested multiple casualties, with injuries ranging from critical to minor, particularly in a police hospital where victims were treated.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned of a possible sharp rise in COVID-19 deaths in most regions in the world driven by the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus.
Speaking at a briefing on Wednesday, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus revealed that infections from the Omicron variant detected in the past 10 weeks were more than the number of COVID-19 cases recorded in the whole of 2020. He said:

Since Omicron was first identified just 10 weeks ago, almost 90 million cases have been reported to WHO, more than cases that were reported in the whole of 2020.
We are now starting to see a very worrying increase in deaths in most regions of the world.
We are concerned that a narrative has taken hold in some countries that because of vaccines, and because of Omicron’s high transmissibility and lower severity, preventing transmission is no longer possible and no longer necessary.
… More transmissions mean more deaths. We are not calling for any country to return to the so-called lockdown, but we are calling on all countries to protect their people using every tool in the toolkit, not vaccines alone.
It’s premature for any country either to surrender or to declare victory.

Medical and Dental Private Practitioners of Zimbabwe Association (MDPPZ) president Johannes Marisa warned that another wave of coronavirus infections could be brewing. Said, Marisa:

WHO Warns Of Possible Spike In COVID-19 Deaths

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has accused some rich countries of hoarding COVID-19 vaccines thereby risking the COVAX programme which aims at ensuring equitable distribution of vaccines.
The <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/02/04/zimbabwe-likely-to-recieve-1-1-million-doses-of-the-covid-19-vaccine-through-the-covax-scheme-by-end-of-march/">COVAX programme</a> aims to supply 1.3 billion vaccine doses to poor and middle-income countries this year. At a recent briefing, WHO senior adviser Bruce Aylward said:
<blockquote>Now, some countries are still pursuing deals that will compromise the COVAX supply. Without a doubt,”</blockquote>
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said equity was essential for the world to weather the COVID-19 storm. He said:
<blockquote>We can’t beat COVID without vaccine equity. Our world will not recover fast enough without vaccine equity, this is clear.
We have made great progress. But that progress is fragile. We need to accelerate the supply and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, and we cannot do that if some countries continue to approach manufacturers who are producing vaccines that COVAX is counting on.
These actions undermine COVAX and deprive health workers and vulnerable people around the world of life-saving vaccines.</blockquote>
Tedros also called for countries to waive intellectual property rules “now” to allow other countries to make vaccines more quickly.
Coronavirus was first reported towards the end of 2019 in China but its origins are not yet known.
According to John Hopkins University, 113 million people have contracted the coronavirus globally while 2.5 million have since died.

The appointment was rescinded after outrage, most of which was visible on social media forums, forced head of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to reconsider the appointment. The government has said that the United Nations actually came out the loser by rescinding Mugabe’s role.
