South Africa secured third place at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament after defeating the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) in a thrilling penalty shootout. The match, held at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium in the Ivory Coast, ended in a goalless draw, leading to a dramatic shootout to determine the winner.
South Africa, known as Bafana Bafana, had suffered a disappointing exit in the semi-finals at the hands of Nigeria. However, they showed resilience in the third-place play-off against DR Congo. The Leopards had several good chances to score throughout the match, with players like Chancel Mbemba and Yoanee Wissa squandering opportunities.
Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerged as the hero for South Africa once again, replicating his heroic performance in the quarter-finals against Cape Verde. Despite South Africa missing their first penalty in the shootout, Williams made two crucial saves, enabling them to claim third place. Mbemba, who could have sealed the victory for DR Congo, saw his shot saved by Williams, leading to a sudden-death format. In the end, Bafana Bafana emerged victorious.
South Africa’s coach, Hugo Broos, praised the team’s fighting spirit and determination, despite their exhaustion. He acknowledged that the players were fatigued due to the team’s demanding schedule but commended their relentless efforts until the last second of the game.
The match showcased DR Congo’s dominance in terms of possession and chances created. Silas Katompa and Simon Banza had clear opportunities to score but failed to find the back of the net. Meanwhile, substitute Fiston Mayele also missed a chance to secure victory for DR Congo in the dying minutes of the game.
Broos acknowledged that DR Congo had outperformed his team and had more opportunities to score. However, he expressed pride in his players’ fighting spirit and believed they deserved the victory.
South Africa’s tiredness was evident as they made only three changes to their lineup, while DR Congo made nine changes, providing an opportunity for their reserves to feature in the match.
The Africa Cup of Nations will culminate in the final match between hosts Ivory Coast and Nigeria, which will be held in Abidjan on Sunday (today). The tournament has been filled with drama and excitement, and the battle for the continental title promises to be a thrilling contest.

South Africa Clinches Third Place At AFCON With Dramatic Penalty Shootout Victory

The second batch of Kenyan troops is due to arrive in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Wednesday.
They are part of a regional force deployed for a peacekeeping mission in the east of the country, according to BBC News.
Armed groups have stepped up attacks in recent months raising concern about the threat they pose to the region’s security.
More than 900 Kenyan troops will be based near the town of Goma in the volatile region.
Burundi soldiers have been operating in South Kivu province since August.
The Kenyan troops will be in North Kivu province where the M23 rebels have seized more territory in recent months and displaced thousands of people.
The Congolese government is set to resume talks with representatives of various armed groups later this month in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Second Batch Of Kenyan Troops Deployed To DRC

Rwanda has responded to the alleged renewed provocation by the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (FARDC) saying the development is contrary to claims by DRC that it was committed to a peaceful resolution to the conflict in that country. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Rwanda rejected claims that it was sponsoring rebel groups in DRC. Read the statement:

Contrary to the assertions of the President of DRC that his country is focused on a diplomatic solution to the insecurity in eastern DRC, recent statements and actions show that the DRC Government is decided on a course of continued military escalation. Furthermore, FAROC continues to operate alongside irregular armed militias, including FDLR.
FARDC’s buildup to renew attacks on M23, a Congolese armed group, is in violation of the agreed regional security mechanisms, including the Nairobi and Luanda processes. Continued public incitement on the basis of ethnicity, use of heavy weaponry, targeting of Rwanda’s border zone, and baseless accusations against Rwanda are unacceptable.
Despite continued provocations by DRC authorities and armed forces, Rwanda reiterates its firm commitment to contributing to a sustainable, peaceful regional security solution within the agreed regional frameworks. However, the continual, unjustified attempts to make Rwanda a scapegoat for the internal political problems of DRC will continue to be categorically rejected.

Rwanda Responds To "Renewed Provocation" By DRC Armed Forces

Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Chairperson of SADC has issued a statement calling for the lifting of all Sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe. In a statement seen by Pindula News, Tshilombo said although the West claims that the sanctions are targeted, they have a spill-over and contagion effect on the rest of the country and also scare away potential foreign direct investors. Western countries imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe at the turn of the millennium citing gross human rights violations during the fast-track land reform programme. Tshilombo speaks on the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/02/12/anti-sanctions-day-to-become-an-annual-event/">Anti-Sanctions day commemorated annually on the 25th of October</a> to pile up pressure on the United States to remove the restrictive measures on Zimbabwe. 1. Once again, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) reaffirms its solidarity with the Government and People of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and reiterates the calls for the unconditional and immediate lifting of sanctions that were imposed on Zimbabwean individuals and institutions.
2. SADC is deeply concerned at the claim that the sanctions are of a “targeted nature” and are aimed at unilaterally punishing a few individuals. The reality is that there is a spill-over and contagion effect on the rest of the country, in particular by imposing a blanket negative perception about Zimbabwe across the world, in particular in the sensitive global financial markets.
3. This perception results in the country being unable to attract much-needed foreign direct investment, lines of credit, and other financial services that are essential to the socio-economic development of the country. This is more concerning given the need for rapid global recovery from at least two years of the socially and economically crippling COVID-19 pandemic which has now been compounded by a general rise in inflation across the world. Zimbabwe, like most developing countries is particularly vulnerable to these trends and the unilateral sanctions worsen the plight of her economy.
4. SADC is committed to the consolidation of democracy in Southern Africa, and indeed, elsewhere in the world. Zimbabwe is expected to hold regular national elections in mid-2023. In this context, SADC appeals to those who have imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe to give space to the citizens of the country to exercise their democratic rights and not use sanctions as a covert mechanism to effect regime change.
5. SADC is also committed to the spirit of multilateralism, in this regard, notes that sanctions imposed against a fellow nation in the family of humanity must be made in accordance with international law. In this context SADC welcomes the Report of the Special Rapporteur on the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on the enjoyment of human rights. Alena Douhan, on her visit to Zimbabwe (A/HRC/51/33/Add.2) which recommended lifting unilateral sanctions in line with the principles of international law.
6. SADC fully supports the conclusion of the Special Rapporteur that sanctions, including secondary sanctions, and different forms of over-compliance by foreign banks and companies have had a significant impact on the population and the Government, exacerbating pre-existing economic and humanitarian challenges.

SADC Chair Calls For Removal Of Sanctions On Zimbabwe

Ugandan authorities on Saturday imposed a travel lockdown on two Ebola-hit districts as part of efforts to stop the spread of the contagious disease.
The measures announced by President Yoweri Museveni mean residents of the central Ugandan districts of Mubende and Kassanda can’t travel into or out of those areas by private or public means, according to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/10/16/1129342224/uganda-has-locked-down-two-districts-in-bid-to-stem-the-spread-of-ebola">NPR</a>. 
Cargo vehicles and others transiting from Kampala, the capital, to southwestern Uganda are still allowed to operate, President Museveni said.
All entertainment places, including bars, as well as places of worship, were ordered to close while activities such as burials in those districts must be supervised by health officials. 
A nighttime curfew also has been imposed. The restrictions will last at least 21 days. Museveni said:

Ebola has infected about 58 people in the East African country since September 20, when authorities declared an outbreak. 
At least 19 people have died, including four health workers. 
Ugandan authorities were not quick in detecting the outbreak, which began infecting people in a farming community in August as the “strange illness” described by local authorities.
The new measures come amid concern that some patients in the Ebola hot spots could secretly try to seek treatment elsewhere — as did one man who fled Mubende and died at a hospital in Kampala earlier this month.
Ugandan authorities have documented more than 1 100 contacts of known Ebola patients, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 
<h2>Ebola transmission and symptoms:</h2>
The Sudan strain of Ebola, for which there is no proven vaccine, is circulating in the country of 45 million people.
Ebola manifests as viral hemorrhagic fever and can be difficult to detect at first because fever is also a symptom of malaria.
It is spread through contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials. 
Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain and at times internal and external bleeding.
Ebola first appeared in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks in South Sudan and Congo, where it occurred in a village near the Ebola River after which the disease is named.

Uganda Imposes A Travel Lockdown On Two Ebola-hit Districts

Zambian nationals are reportedly chasing away Congolese nationals telling them to go back to their country. In a video clip posted on social media by a Zambian politician, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joseph_Kalimbwe">Joseph Kalimbwe</a>, the narrator who is speaking in Shona says Zambians are assaulting Congolese at the Kasumbalesa border telling them to return to their country. It is not known why the dispute erupted. Young men are seen holding wooden sticks and chasing the alleged Congolese nationals. Watch the video below for more:

<h2>Some context:</h2>
Zambia’s economy has <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/the-zambian-kwacha-overtakes-the-russian-ruble-to-become-best-performing-currency-globally/">enjoyed a steady rise in the past 24 months</a> resulting in some nationals of neighbouring countries seeking economic refugee in that country.
The foreign nationals include Congolese nationals who are fleeing from the ongoing conflict between Congolese troops and M23 rebels.
The fighting has forced nearly 200 000 people to flee their homes, according to Human Rights Watch.
There have been attacks carried out by various armed groups in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 2021 and 2022. 
The attacks have killed 629 and injured 321 (not including rebel casualties). At least 82 perpetrators were also killed and one injured in these attacks.
There are heightened concerns that the abusive rebel force, largely inactive for a decade, is receiving <a href="https://www.hrw.org/africa/rwanda">Rwandan</a> support for its operations in North Kivu province.

WATCH: Zambians Chase Away Congolese Nationals At Kasumbalesa Border

Nine Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) nationals last week Friday appeared before the courts for illegally entering into Zimbabwe.
They were arrested by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) detectives and immigration officers on the 17th of November.
Chinhoyi magistrate Ms Tamari Chibindi ordered the nine to pay $2 500 or face a 10-day jail term when they appeared before her charged with contravening the Immigration Act.
The nine were identified as Kikala Kimvula Elvis, Aminata Nyota, Ikra Masara, Bolodjwa Eale, Moise Lama, Christina Bilonda Tshiani, Widi Dimbi, Makanzu and Nangana Magani.
Prosecutor Tendai Tapi told the court that the nine entered Zimbabwe without permits or passports from the DRC through the Chirundu One-Stop Border Post on November 16.
They never presented themselves to immigration officials.
They were arrested at around 3 pm after detectives received a tip-off to the effect that a Harare-bound bus was carrying illegal immigrants.
The bus was intercepted at the 122km peg along Chirundu-Harare highway, leading to the arrest of the nine.
<a href="https://www.zimbabwevoice.com/2021/11/22/zrp-arrest-nine-congolese-border-jumpers/">Zimbabwe Voice</a> reports that a warrant of detention was issued by the Immigration Department. 
This is not the first time Congolese nationals have been caught violating immigration laws. 
In May this year, a Congolese national, Tshitshi Tshiswaka (38) of Kasai province, was arrested in Zimbabwe after <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2021/05/28/error-in-fake-passport-betrays-congolese-national/">trying to use a fake passport</a> at the exit point in Victoria Falls to cross into Zambia en route to his country.
He had already used the fake passport to gain entry into Zimbabwe when he was travelling from South Africa through the Beitbridge border post.

Nine DRC Nationals Arrested For Sneaking Into Zimbabwe

A motorcyclist had a narrow escape as he was crossing the runway of an airport in the Democratic Republic of Congo when a plane carrying 23 people hit him during landing.
The motorcyclist suffered only scratches in the incident on Friday evening at the airport in the southeastern city of Lubumbashi, an AFP correspondent there said.
<a href="https://www.zimlive.com/2021/08/15/dr-congo-plane-scrapes-motorcyclist-during-landing/">AFP further reports</a> that the Bombardier Q400 plane belonging to Congo Airways hit the motorcyclist as it was landing on a flight from central Mbuji-Mayi.
The head of the office of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s transport ministry said in a statement:

The plane hit a motorcyclist who was crossing the runway, causing major material damage.

The ministry added that investigations are ongoing “to determine the administrative and security failures at the source of the unfortunate incident”.
Similar incidents are regularly reported at airports in the Democratic Republic of Congo, involving both people and animals on the tarmac.
A photo on social media, authenticated by AFP, showed a soldier in a presidential guard’s uniform on a motorcycle on the tarmac at Lubumbashi Friday evening.
DR Congo’s airlines are on the blacklist of carriers that are barred from flying in the European Union.
