An elderly couple from Bulawayo, Frank Sibanda and his wife, Francisca Netsai, both 65, were sentenced to seven years in prison on March 26, 2025, for embezzling over US$30,000 from Stanbic Bank Zimbabwe.
Due to a technical glitch, the bank mistakenly deposited the funds into Francisca’s account, and the couple exploited the error, withdrawing US$34,110.47 and spending it on extravagant shopping trips in Zimbabwe and South Africa.
The couple was convicted on 47 counts of theft, and the court suspended four years of their sentence for five years on the condition of no similar offences.
The remaining three years are suspended if they repay the stolen amount to the bank by June 20.
In her ruling, Bulawayo regional magistrate Dambudzo Malunga said that the court considered their advanced age, Francisca’s health problems, and their responsibility for their six-year-old grandchild, and the fact that they are first-time offenders, in reducing the sentence. She said:

You committed a very serious offence, prejudicing Stanbic Bank of a substantial sum. However, the court has tempered justice with mercy in the interest of fairness.
</blockquote>
The Sibandas’ lawyer, Jabulani Ndubiwa of Mashayamombe and Company Attorneys, argued for a non-custodial sentence due to Francisca’s health complications and their caregiving responsibilities.
The couple’s crime was discovered during a routine audit by Stanbic Bank. The bank noticed some strange transactions in their records, which led to an investigation and the couple’s arrest.
The story started on February 5 2024, when Francisca opened a bank account at Stanbic Bank in Bulawayo. 
Her daughter, Rudo, lied about Francisca working for a company in Harare to help open the account. Francisca was then given a Visa card linked to the account.
On April 5, Francisca tried to make a purchase for about US$17.95 at a store in Bulawayo, but the transaction didn’t go through. 
However, due to a mistake during the bank’s process, Francisca’s account was wrongly credited with more than US$40,000 (US$40,850.86) instead of the correct amount.
Realising the mistake, the couple decided to spend the money. Between April 30 and May 1, they withdrew US$2,025 in cash from Stanbic Bank in Bulawayo and spent US$32,085.47 in South Africa. 
They went on shopping trips to places like Sandton and Maboneng, known for their markets and trendy spots.
The bank later noticed the irregular transactions and reported it to the police. After investigating, the couple was arrested. In total, they stole US$34,110.47, and the money was never recovered.

Two teenage lovers from Mutare have been arrested after stealing a staggering US$25,000, which they spent on luxury items, including a car and the latest iPhones.
The girl, aged 16, allegedly stole the money from her sister’s husband and spent it with her 15-year-old boyfriend and his mother.
According to Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, the girl, who is from Chikanga high-density suburb, stole US$25,000 from her brother-in-law.
She and her boyfriend used the stolen cash to buy a Honda Fit, three iPhones, and various clothing items.
The boyfriend is said to have given some of the money to his mother, Munyaradzi Madzure (39), for safekeeping.
The theft was uncovered after the girl began displaying US$100 notes on her WhatsApp status. This raised suspicions, leading her brother-in-law, Kelvin Motsi, to report the missing money to the police. Said Commissioner Nyathi:
On March 14, at around 10 am, the complainant reported a case of theft, whereby the unknown accused person stole his money amounting to US$25,000 from his suit jacket.

Police attended the scene and interviewed the complainant`s wife, who stated that she suspected the juvenile (the female suspect), who is her younger sister after seeing her on her WhatsApp status counting hard cash in US$100 notes. She asked her to explain, but to no avail.
The police interviewed the female suspect, who revealed that she stole the money, together with her boyfriend, on different occasions.
The police proceeded to the boy’s residence and met the accused person, who was driving a Toyota Axio, Registration Number AFY 4786.
The police asked the accused person to produce a driver’s licence, and he failed. He was arrested.

The boy’s mother was arrested after admitting to the police that she had allowed her son to drive the car despite him not having a driver’s licence. Said Nyathi:

Accused person number three, who is the boy’s mother, told the police that she allowed her son to drive the car, and was also arrested for permitting an unlicenced person to drive.
The teenage lovebirds were interviewed and revealed that they stole cash amounting to US$25,000 on different occasions from the complainant`s bedroom, and bought a maroon Honda Fit (Registration Number AFS 4391) for US$ 5,800 and three iPhones for US$3,000.
They also indicated that they bought various clothing worth US$2,000. The boyfriend indicated that he gave his mother (accused three) US$5,000 for safekeeping, which she refused to hand over to the police.
The vehicle and three iPhones were recovered and are kept as exhibits. The total value stolen is US$25,000, and the total value recovered is US$9,000.

A couple from Kwekwe has been sentenced to prison for concealing stolen cash that their son had stolen before fleeing.
John Tuhwe (51) and Gciniso Ndlovu (43) were each sentenced to six months in prison for hiding money linked to a US$40,000 theft.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the couple received and concealed US$680 in a wardrobe and US$5,200 in a plastic bag with meat inside a fridge.
The theft, which took place on May 15, 2024, involved Calvin Tuhwe, the couple’s son, and his accomplices, who broke into a home and stole the large sum of money.
After committing the crime, Calvin shared part of the stolen loot with his parents before fleeing.
The court found John and Gciniso guilty of assisting in hiding the stolen funds

A man and woman from Kwekwe helped their son hide money he stole and got caught. They got 6 months in prison. The son stole $40,000 and shared some with his parents before running away. The parents hid $6,880 in a wardrobe and fridge. They were found guilty of helping hide the money. The theft happened in May 2024.

Shylock Zulu, a 28-year-old from Themba Ndlovu Homestead, Mashala Village in Hwange, was convicted of theft by the magistrates court.
He stole a goat, slaughtered it, and then sold the meat to the goat’s owner.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), on January 8, 2025, Zulu took a black and white male goat belonging to Thabani Sibanda from the Mashala grazing area.
He then slaughtered the goat and went to Sibanda’s homestead, where he sold the meat for US$15, claiming it was bushbuck meat.
Sibanda became suspicious that the meat was from his missing goat.
Following an investigation, Zulu was sentenced to six months in prison, with three months suspended on the condition he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.
The remaining three months were suspended on the condition that Zulu pay the restitution of ZiG1057 to the complainant.

An administrator at Shalom Church, Westlea Assembly, allegedly stole over US$21,000 in tithes and offerings after being instructed to deposit the money into the church’s bank account.
<a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/church-admin-steals-us21k-tithes-offerings/">H-Metro</a> reported that the administrator, Chipo Molly Machokonera, appeared before Harare magistrate Isheanesu Matova on Monday, where she was not asked to plead.
Prosecutor Rufaro Chonzi told the court that between January 1, 2023, and December 10, 2024, Machokonera was employed by the church as an administrative secretary.
Her duties included receiving and recording tithes and offerings from congregants and banking part of the money.
It is alleged that Machokonera took advantage of her position and diverted US$21,904 for her personal use.
She then misrepresented the deposits to the church by providing fake deposit slips, purporting that the money had been deposited at Steward Bank Joina City Branch in Harare, and forwarded the slips to the pastor.
The court heard that on December 10, the pastor requested a bank statement from Steward Bank, discovering that the money Machokonera claimed to have deposited was not accounted for.
He then called for an internal audit, which revealed the offence, leading to a police report and her subsequent arrest.
The total value stolen is US$21,904, and nothing has been recovered.

A shift manager at Simbisa Bakers Inn, William Gonese (28), was sentenced to 10 months in jail for stealing US$3,420 from his workplace to fund online gambling during a night shift.
Gonese, who lives in Unit M, Seke in Chitungwiza, admitted to the theft in court, saying he hoped to impress his new wife by winning enough money to repay the stolen funds and make a profit.
According to <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/bid-to-impress-girlfriend-backfires/">The Herald</a>, initially, Harare Magistrate Lynne Chinzou sentenced Gonese to 30 months in prison.
However, 12 months were suspended for five years on the condition of good behaviour, and another eight months were suspended if Gonese repays the stolen amount. This leaves him with 10 months to serve in jail.
Prosecutor Audrah Chitoro told the court that Gonese was given a float of US$3,420 to serve customers at the Bakers Inn outlet on Chinhoyi Street in Harare.
During his shift, Gonese used the funds for online betting through InnBucks deposits, hoping to multiply the money.
At around 3:08 AM, he confessed to audit manager Yusufu Bruce that he had lost US$470 in cash and US$2,950 in InnBucks deposits while gambling.
A reconciliation confirmed the full amount was missing, leading to Gonese’s arrest and charge for theft.

William Gonese, a 28-year-old shift manager at Bakers Inn, stole US$3,420 from his workplace during a single night shift to fund online betting on a platform called Aviator.
According to a report by <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/manager-in-court-for-theft/">The Herald</a>, Gonese hoped that by the end of the shift, he would not only be able to repay the stolen amount but also generate enough profit to impress his new wife.
Gonese, who resides in Unit M, Seke in Chitungwiza, pleaded guilty to theft before Harare Magistrate Lynne Chinzou and was subsequently convicted. Sentencing is scheduled for Saturday, January 4.
In court, Gonese explained his motive for the crime and said he intended to win money to impress his new wife. He said:

Your Worship, my intention was not to steal, but to win more money. I started betting with US$350, and as I kept trying my luck, I ended up spending all the US$3 420. My girlfriend recently eloped with me, and I wanted to impress her if I had won the money.

Prosecutor Audrah Chitoro told the court that last week on Saturday, Gonese was entrusted with a float of US$3,420 to serve customers at a Bakers Inn outlet on Chinhoyi Street in Harare.
However, by around 3:08 AM the following day, Gonese called Simbisa Bakers Inn audit manager Yusufu Bruce to confess that he had lost US$470 in cash and US$2,950 in InnBucks deposits through online betting.
In response to Gonese’s call, Bruce conducted a reconciliation at the shop, which confirmed that the entire amount of US$3,420 had been misappropriated.
With no funds recovered, Bruce filed a police report, leading to Gonese’s arrest.

An accounts clerk at Stanley Primary School in Gweru has been arrested for allegedly defrauding the institution of US$70,000.
The suspect, Soneni Muchayabande (46), from Ascot Infill in Gweru, appeared before Magistrate Aelene Munamati on charges of fraud.
Muchayabande was granted bail set at US$100 and is scheduled to return to court on January 13, 2025.
Prosecutor Brendon Ndlovu told the court that Muchayabande collected various cash amounts for school fees but converted the money for her own use.
She then falsely claimed that the funds had been deposited into the school’s bank accounts and issued fraudulent receipts. Said Ndlovu:

The accused misrepresented to Stanley Primary School that US$70 952 had been deposited into the school accounts and went on to author receipts of school fees in the receipt books yet the money had not been deposited into the bank accounts.
The accused person indicated that the money was deposited into the school account yet no deposit was made.
The accused person was positively identified by witnesses who paid fees to her at the school.

A 39-year-old woman from Hwange, Patricia Dube, squandered about US$10,000 that her South Africa-based neighbour had entrusted to her for safekeeping, later claiming that the money had mysteriously turned into pieces of paper.
Dube, from Lusumbami village in Hwange, was convicted of theft of trust property by Hwange magistrate Fungai Dzimiri and sentenced to three years in jail.
However, six months of the sentence were suspended for five years on the condition that Dube does not commit a similar offence during that period.
An additional 18 months of her sentence were suspended on the condition that she restitutes US$9,969 to the complainant, Sympathy Moyo, on or before January 30, 2025. Dube will serve an effective 12 months in jail.
Dube’s restitution deadline will determine whether the remaining 18 months of her sentence are activated.
In sentencing Dube, Magistrate Dzimiri condemned her actions, stating that she had betrayed the trust placed in her by the complainant.
The court heard that when Moyo returned from South Africa earlier this month and demanded her money, Dube claimed the cash had mysteriously turned into pieces of paper.
Prosecutor Brenda Ndlovu told the court that Moyo, a beauty therapist based in South Africa, had been sending goods for resale in Zimbabwe and entrusting the proceeds to Dube for safekeeping.
Moyo also sent cash directly to Dube during the same period. Between March 2022 and December 2023, Dube received a total of US$10,110 from Moyo.
Upon her return to Zimbabwe on December 8, Moyo approached Dube to collect her savings. The court heard that Dube led Moyo to her dining room, where she kept a blue tin cash box.
When she opened the box, she threw a bunch of cut pieces of paper onto the table, claiming that the money had either disappeared or magically turned into paper.
Unable to get a satisfactory explanation, Moyo reported the matter to the police, leading to Dube’s arrest.
Only US$141 was recovered from the cash tin, which was filled with cut pieces of paper.

A woman named Patricia from Hwange spent her friend's money and said it turned into paper. The friend gave her $10,000 to keep safe. Patricia was arrested and sentenced to three years in jail. But some of the sentence was suspended if she pays her friend back most of the money. Patricia said the cash magically turned into paper when her friend asked for it. The friend reported it to the police, and Patricia was arrested. Only $141 was left in the cash box when the police found it. The judge said Patricia broke her friend's trust.

Hwange Woman Claims Cash Turned To Paper After Squandering US$10,000 Entrusted By Friend Based In South Africa

ZANU PF official Kudzanai Chipanga appeared before Rusape Magistrates Court on Tuesday, facing charges of theft.
Chipanga, a former ZANU PF Youth Secretary, is accused of stealing Presidential Pfumvudza inputs worth US$11,200 from the Department of Agriculture Research and Extension (AREX) in Makoni District.
He appeared before Rusape regional magistrate Barbra Mateko, who remanded him on US$400 bail to January 30.
Prosecutors did not oppose the granting of bail to the ZANU PF official, unlike opposition members who are often held in pre-trial detention for extended periods, sometimes up to 12 months or more.
Chipanga was ordered to reside at his Wakefield Farm in Headlands, report on Monday and Friday every week at Rusape Rural Police Station until the end of his trial, and not interfere with witnesses or investigations.
He was represented by Mutare lawyer Chris Ndlovu of Gonese and Ndlovu Legal Practitioners, while Event Dhliwayo prosecuted.
Allegations are that on November 27, AREX received 200x50kg bags of ZFC Compound D fertilisers, 100x5kg of SC649 seed maize, and 500 packets of vegetable seed from the Grain Marketing Board Rusape Depot, meant for distribution in Ward 38 in Headlands under the Pfumvudza programme.
The inputs were loaded into a MAN truck (AFJ 6795), driven by Trust Mangwanda, who ferried the inputs to Lawrencedale Primary School, where there was a ZANU PF star rally.
Dhliwayo alleged that after the rally, Chipanga and his alleged accomplices, Innocent Magutakuona, Michael Musekiwa, and Julius Chipfupa, who are still at large, told Noria Gashu of AREX that they would share and distribute the inputs to the people, claiming they had sourced the inputs.

A ZANU PF official named Kudzanai Chipanga was arrested for stealing materials meant for a farming program. He allegedly took items worth US$11,200. Prosecutors did not object to bail, unlike with opposition members who are often detained for long periods. Chipanga and others allegedly took the materials after a political rally. His trial will continue in January.

Parents and guardians of children enrolled at Banket Primary School are outraged after allegations surfaced that school authorities embezzled part of the funds raised for a school trip to Victoria Falls in October this year.
The issue came to light during a recent meeting between parents and school officials, where it was claimed that teachers involved in the trip had stolen US$3,080, affecting 14 students.
In a letter addressed to Andrew Matsikiti, the District Schools Inspector for Zvimba, on December 4, which was seen by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200036067/trip-money-disappears-at-banket-primary-school">NewsDay</a>, parents accused four staff members of misappropriating the funds. Reads the letter:

Sometime in October 2024, the school advertised an annual educational tour of the Victoria Falls where willing and able parents or guardians were asked to pay US$220 on behalf of their learners in order to facilitate smooth travel, accommodation, meals as well as an array of activities that had been lined up for them to partake once they got there.
We are very sad to put it on record that we have some parents numbering about eight at the time of writing this report who paid money to four members of staff (names held) without receiving receipts as proof of payment.
We are also saddened to report that upon investigations we learnt that the school bursar took receipt of only 55/56 students for this trip leaving the remaining 14/15 students being present in the bus whom we believe had their money taken without it being receipted.

The parents further alleged that on the second day of the trip, learners were forced to eat rotten food. They said:

The learners had most of the lined-up activities cancelled for one reason or the other. We were also alerted to the effect that our children endured a nearly 600km distance without food on their return from Victoria Falls.
Those with pocket money were only allowed to buy in Gweru after seven-plus hours from the time they departed.
A classic example is when we took the bursar [to task] to explain why there was an accommodation receipt from Venus Hotel yet learners were booked at Budget Lodges.
There was no clear explanation except to say that it was what had been presented by the staff that went with learners.

The parents have urged the School Development Committee to thoroughly investigate the issue, demanding justice and transparency in the process.
School head Nelson Nzombe confirmed the allegations, adding that the matter was under investigation.
Matsikiti also said he was aware of the situation. He said a team had been dispatched to look into the matter.

Thieves broke into a parked Nissan X-Trail using an unidentified object, stealing a bag containing over US$17,000 in cash, along with sportswear.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the incident took place just after midday on Tuesday at the corner of King George and Natal Avenue in Avondale, Harare. Police said:

Police in Harare are investigating a case of theft from car which occurred at corner King George and Natal Avenue, Avondale on 12/11/24 at around 1230 hours.
Unknown suspects stole a bag containing USD 17 555.00 cash and sport wear from a Nissan X-Trail vehicle after using an unknown object to break the vehicle’s rear right quarter glass.

The ZRP has called on anyone with information to report to the nearest police station.
In a separate incident, police recovered a Mazda Atenza (registration number AES 9788) on Monday in Lusaka, Highfield, Harare.
The vehicle had been stolen in a robbery in Marondera on Sunday at around 3:45 PM.

A 25-year-old man from Kuwadzana Extension, Harare, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court facing charges of theft and unlawful possession of a firearm after he stole a gun from an accident victim.
The court heard that on June 28, 2024, around 9 PM, the accused, Bright Makuvatsine, was part of a group assisting a couple involved in a road traffic accident along Bulawayo Road near Sogo Service Station in Whitehouse, Harare.
During this time, Makuvatsine stole a satchel containing the couple’s belongings, which included a 9mm Sarsilmaz pistol.
Makuvatsine was arrested on August 23, 2024, when he was found in possession of the firearm at the Kuwadzana 6 Shopping Centre. He also helped recover some of the stolen property.
He was convicted and sentenced to 12 months in prison for the theft, with four months suspended.
Makuvatsine was also fined US$300 for unlawful possession of a firearm, with a default sentence of four months imprisonment if the fine is not paid.

Police in Chinhoyi are investigating the circumstances surrounding a case of unlawful entry and theft that occurred on Saturday night at a church located along Highway Drive in the Mazari neighbourhood.
In a statement, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said preliminary investigations indicate that unknown suspects gained unauthorised entry into the church offices and then proceeded to break open the church’s safe.
The perpetrators allegedly stole a substantial sum of US$35,000 in cash from the safe.
Evidence collected from the crime scene indicates that the suspects may have used an explosive device to breach the safe.
Investigators recovered a burnt fuse as well as traces of explosive residue at the location.
Police are appealing to members of the public who may have any information related to this incident to come forward and report it at their nearest police station. The ZRP said:

In an unrelated case, Police in Chombira are investigating a case of a robbery that also happened on Saturday around 1:20 AM in Kanengoni Village, Chiweshe.
It is alleged that three unidentified male suspects, all wearing face masks, forcibly gained entry into the complainant’s house through a broken window.
The intruders were armed with machetes and proceeded to violently attack the homeowner.
After assaulting the victim, the suspects then ransacked the entire house, searching for valuables.
They stole a significant amount of cash – US$6,500 – as well as 85 kilograms of gold that had been hidden inside a wooden cabinet.
In yet another disturbing incident of unlawful entry and theft, the ZRP said that unknown suspects broke into a supermarket located in the Aspindale area of Marimba, Harare. The break-in occurred around 2 AM on July 1st.
According to the police investigation, the suspects allegedly gained unauthorised access to the supermarket premises by breaking through the roof.
The perpetrators then proceeded to tamper with the CCTV surveillance system, likely in an attempt to cover their tracks.
After disabling the security cameras, the suspects then targeted the supermarket’s safes, successfully breaking into two of them.
The thieves managed to steal US$50,000 in cash from the safes before fleeing the scene.

US$35 000 Stolen From Church Premises In Chinhoyi

Former Deputy Information Minister Bright Matonga was on Thursday, June 27, granted US$600 bail by the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court following his arrest on Tuesday on two counts of theft.
The two counts have been outlined by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) as follows:

The accused person is facing allegations of theft emanating from an incident which happened on the 10th of December 2021 when he unlawfully took two John Deere tractors belonging to the complainant from Monchris (Landos) farm in Selous and took them to his farm. The accused person owns the Chigwell farm in Chegutu. The tractors are valued at USD70 000 and were both recovered.
Count 2
The accused person is jointly charged with his employee, Wasili Wisili on allegations of theft. The State is alleging that on the 19th of February 2016, the complainant, Talbec Investments Pvt Ltd represented by David Leonard Van Breda entered into a joint venture with the first accused person who is the owner of Chigwell farm in Chegutu. The agreement gave the complainant farming rights on the said farm for up to 15 years. Upon occupying the farm, the complainant equipped the farm with farm implements and machinery valued at USD414 888. The complainant only operated on the farm for six years before his employees were evicted by the first accused person on the 11th of December 2021 and they left behind all their farm equipment, implements as well as consumables. It is alleged that sometime in December 2021, the first and second accused persons instructed Chigwell Farm employees to open the warehouse at the farm and load farming equipment and implements belonging to the complainant onto vehicles on multiple occasions. They took the farm implements to a destination unknown to the State.

Former Deputy Minister Bright Matonga Released On US$600 Bail

Simbarashe Muchekwa (20), a man from Masvingo, told a Magistrate that he stole a cellphone to download and watch pornography.
As reported by <a href="https://tellzim.com/i-stole-phone-to-watch-porn-man-tells-court/">TellZim News</a>, Muchekwa recently appeared before Magistrate Linnet Mudzingo on charges of theft and unlawful entry on May 2, 2024.
He was remanded in custody for continuation of trial on May 6, 2024.
Prosecuting, Tichaona Chakavarika told the court that on April 21, 2024, the accused went to Anna Muzivi, who is the complainant’s homestead at around 3 PM, knowing the complainant was at church and no one was around.
Muchekwa allegedly used an iron bar to break the door and gained entrance before proceeding to the dining room where he took a 32-inch plasma television, laptop, and a Tecno mobile phone.
At around 4 PM, Muzivi returned home and saw her front door wide open. She then spotted Muchekwa’s footprints in the yard and went inside only to discover that her television, laptop, and cellphone were missing.
The court heard that Muzivi’s neighbours told her that they saw someone whom they didn’t know entering her house.
Shen then called the police who traced the footprints which led them to the accused’s place.
The police searched his house and found the stolen television and mobile phone. Muchekwa told them that he had already sold the laptop which they later recovered.
Asked by the magistrate during the trial why he had stolen the property, Muchekwa said he stole the television for his family to watch movies, especially his kid who liked cartoons.
He said he sold the laptop to get money for rentals, food, and clothes for the family and he kept the cellphone to download and watch pornography at night as well as call his family and friends.

Masvingo Man Steals Cellphone To Watch Porn, Court Hears

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of two men in connection with a spate of unlawful entry into premises, robbery and theft cases which occurred in and around Mt Darwin from 29 July 2023 to 27 January 2024.
In a statement issued on 06 February 2024, ZRP spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the suspects, Shepherd Kamhandu (19) and Douglas Kaingidza (39), were apprehended by the public in Rushinga, Mt Darwin whilst selling 8 bricks of cigarettes.
Asst Comm Nyathi also appealed for information which may lead to the arrest of Nelson Batsirai Makwengura (30) who allegedly stole 330 tonnes of Polypropylene HKR102 worth US$442 000.
Makwengura’s alleged accomplices, Lesley Nyasha Makaka (30) and Mercy Muza (44) have since been arrested. Reads the statement:

On 27th January 2024, the two suspects were apprehended by the public in Rushinga, Mt Darwin whilst selling 8 bricks of cigarettes and were later referred to CID Mt Darwin for further management.
The detectives managed to link the two suspects to a case of unlawful entry and theft which occurred at Kandeya Township, Mt Darwin in which the suspects broke into a shop and stole 100 bricks of Pacific Storm and Breeze cigarettes, 45 bricks of Everest cigarettes, one brick of Madison cigarettes, three crates of Carling Black Label Quarts, one X 750 mls Hunters beer and one X 750 mls Mayfair beer all valued at US$ 1 286.00.
The arrest of the suspects led to the recovery of 70 bricks of cigarettes, various clothes, blankets, a 32-inch television, five gas tanks, jewellery, cell phones and accessories all valued at US$ 1 787.00.
Investigations carried out unearthed that the two suspects were linked to 24 counts of unlawful entry into premises cases, seven counts of robbery cases and four counts of theft cases.
In an unlawful entry into premises case which occurred in Madziwa, Mt Darwin on 06th August 2023, the suspects broke into a shop before stealing a wallet containing US$300.00 cash, various clothes and groceries all valued at US$ 1 000.00.
In another robbery case which occurred in September 2023, the suspects attacked a juvenile (14) who was walking along a footpath from Kandeya Township to the Ridgeview location, before stealing a cell phone and a satchel.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe Republic Police is appealing for information which may lead to the arrest of Nelson Batsirai Makwengura (30) who is being sought in connection with a case of theft which occurred during the period extending from May 2023 to October 2023.
The suspect allegedly stole 330 tonnes of Polypropylene HKR102 worth US$442 000.00 in connivance with his two accomplices, Lesley Nyasha Makaka (30) and Mercy Muza (44), who were since arrested.

Two Men Arrested Over A Spate Of Break-ins, Robberies In Mt Darwin

Lochview suburb in Bulawayo is currently experiencing a high rate of thefts and break-ins, a report by <a href="https://cite.org.zw/crime-wave-grips-bulawayo-suburb/">CITE</a> claims.
The Macdonald Bricks Police Post has repeatedly received numerous reports of stolen cars, cellphones, laptops, furniture, and even livestock.
A Lochview resident Sthabilisile Chifamba who spoke to CITE’s Ndumiso Tshuma, said she is now afraid of drying her laundry out in the sun after her clothes were stolen on Wednesday last week at midday.
Residents have filed numerous complaints and reports, but they feel the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s (ZRP) response is slow and lacks urgency.
Another resident Sammuel Soko, said he caught a member of the neighbourhood watch in his house at night, trying to steal a car battery.
A single mother Jessica Ncube said that “four armed men stormed my house, ordered my family of four to lie down, and stole four cell phones, the living room TV, a laptop, and $300 cash from my purse.”
When contacted by CITE, Hillside police station Officer In Charge Chief Inspector Precious Simango acknowledged the “ongoing battle against crime” in the suburb.
Simango announced plans to establish a neighbourhood watch patrol unit in the suburb within the next three months.

Crime Wave Grips Bulawayo Suburb, Police Pledge To Establish Neighbourhood Watch Patrol Unit

A police officer was arrested for allegedly stealing copper cables and solar panels from President Mnangagwa’s Precabe Farm and neighbouring Brownland Farm in Kwekwe, <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/cop-arrested-for-stealing-from-president-mnangagwas-farm/">reported the Chronicle</a>.
The suspect, Musa Mukuli (40), is a police intelligence member based at the Nehanda Police Camp.
It is alleged that Mukuli and three other accomplices who are on the run, stole copper cables from the two neighbouring farms in the Sherwood Block.
The suspects pounced on Precabe Farm and stole copper cables but Mukuli was nabbed by alert security details when the gang tried to steal the solar panels from Brownland Farm.
Mukuli appeared before Kwekwe Magistrate Samukelisiwe Gumbo for contravening provisions of the Electricity Act and was remanded in custody to 22 September.
Prosecuting, Michelle Daraja said that on 07 September, Mukuli and three accomplices, Brandon Ncube, William Wurayayi and one Jameson went to Precabe Farm where they stole copper cables from a water pump house.
While in the act, they were interrupted by alert security details but three others managed to escape.
Mukuli was apprehended but he wrestled with and overpowered the security details until he managed to escape.
On 14 September at around 11 PM, the gang connived to steal solar panels from Brownland Estate Farm. Said Daraja:

The four accused persons went to the mentioned farm and removed and took 3×335 watts solar panels supplying power to the borehole. They hid the panels in a nearby bush.
They were, however, spotted by the security details from neighbouring Precabe Farm who tracked them down.

The court also heard that as the suspects attempted to board their getaway Honda Fit vehicle, the security details pounced and managed to apprehend Mukuli while three others escaped.
Mukuli indicated that they had hidden the solar panels in a bush near the scene and this linked them to the copper cables theft.
The security details handed over Mukuli to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kwekwe leading to his subsequent appearance in court.

Police Officer Steals From Mnangagwa's Farm

Police are investigating a security breach at the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) headquarters in Harare.
This comes after three laptops were stolen during a break-in on Sunday morning.
<a href="https://www.zimlive.com/3-laptops-stolen-in-break-in-at-the-zimbabwe-electoral-commission-hq/">ZimLive</a> reported that two of the laptops belonged to chief elections officer Utloile Silaigwana and a third was assigned to his secretary, Isabel Mariwowo.
According to an internal police memo of the incident seen by the publication, the break-in and theft were discovered just before 9 AM on Sunday by Mariwowo who had turned up for work and initially observed that her electrical appliances were off. Reads part of the memo:

Mariwowo then discovered that her Dell laptop was missing, and in Silaigwana’s office, an HP Pro Book and Mac Book Pro had also been stolen. Says the memo:

It was not revealed if the laptops held any sensitive data, the theft coming less than a month before general elections.

Silaigwana's Laptops Stolen In Break-in At ZEC Headquarters

A Zimbabwean-born Zywai Nyahoda was jailed for four-and-a-half months following a theft incident in an Oxford Tesco, UK.
Nyahoda had gone into the store to steal goods and was stopped by staff members. When they planned to call the police, Nyahoda threatened them with a needle, resulting in his conviction for threatening behaviour. Recorder Alexander McGregor gave Nyahoda Giving 18 weeks’ imprisonment. He said:

People working in shops and dealing with shoplifters should not have to face threats of that very serious nature.
</blockquote>
Nyahoda had 15 previous convictions for 54 offences, many for theft and related crimes.
His lawyer told the court that he originally came to the UK from Zimbabwe via Germany when he was still a young child. He was brought up in Oxford by his grandmother and had a good academic record, but became addicted to hard drugs after using cannabis.
Nyahoda’s drug use started with cannabis and escalated to heroin after a serious car accident left him hospitalised for months. The death of his grandmother caused him to spiral, leading to the incident at Tesco.
His lawyer said has since managed to get clean and is now on a drug-free wing in prison. He plans to stay with an uncle in south Oxfordshire after his release.

Zimbabwean-born Man Jailed In UK For Theft, Threatening Shop Workers

Four Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS) managers appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court on Thursday on allegations of stealing US$702 386 from the company which was meant for drug purchases.
PSMAS CEO Farai Muchena, 54, appeared before Harare magistrate Stanford Mambanje jointly charged with Victor Chaipa, 49, Cosmas Mukwesha, 50, and Polite Mugwagwa, 41.
Chaipa is PSMAS’ strategy performance executive, Mukwesha group secretary, and Mugwagwa the performance manager.
The four were not asked to plead to theft charges and were remanded in custody pending bail applications.
Allegations were that in 2020, the PSMAS board passed a resolution authorising management to venture into gold trade.
The objective was to generate foreign currency for the procurement of pharmaceutical drugs and other related medical equipment.
The board resolved that staff members from PSMAS’ procurement department were to act as buyers and agents for buying the gold on behalf of the medical aid scheme.
PSMAS had other investment projects including cannabis growing and a shareholding in a bank.
On 18 February 2021, PSMAS executives, acting on the board resolution, allegedly handed over the projects of gold buying, cannabis growing and the micro finance business to subsidiary, Premier Service Holding Company after opting instead to focus on their core business – health insurance.
It is further alleged that on 13 July 2021, Muchena sent a memo to PSMAS’ principal officer requesting funding for the gold project, which had been allocated to the holding company for implementation.
The funding request amounted to US$237,794, with US$108,674 as pre-trading funding, alleges the prosecution.
Muchena is also alleged to have advised PSMAS about the formation of a company styled Claydust, solely for buying and selling gold to Fidelity.
In response, PSMAS disposed of its Zimbabwe Bank (ZB) shares totalling 65,9643 valued at US$38,000 in order to fund the gold-buying project.
Muchena, Chaipa, Mukwesha and Mugwagwa, acting in connivance, then deviated from using the society’s procurement team to buy gold.
Instead, the suspects allegedly engaged 18 private agencies unknown to PSMAS for gold buying.
From 2019 to 2022 the accused persons allegedly received gold from five of the private agencies which were then sold to Fidelity and they realised US $ 702 386,80 and converted the money to their own use.
External auditors, RBM Auditors, were hired to investigate. The audit concluded that the suspects received and converted all the money realised from the sale of gold to Fidelity Printers for their own use.

Four PSMAS Executives Accused Of Stealing US$700k To Buy Gold

A till operator at a wholesaler based in Msasa, Harare allegedly disappeared with almost US$6 000 last Friday.
Acting Harare provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Webster Dzvova said Emily Jena vanished with a total of US$5 800.
Insp Dzvova has appealed to anyone with information on Jena’s whereabouts to come forward to help with investigations. <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/till-operator-vanishes-with-us58k/">He said:</a>

Police are investigating a case involving a wholesaler till operator who is believed to have disappeared with cash.
On April 21, the accused was on duty at her workplace.
After knocking off at around 5.45 pm, the accused went to the cash office where she left her till bag without balancing it off with the cash officer.
She was reported to have hurriedly left the cash office indicating that she was going to check her till and never returned.
After balancing the daily sales from the till operators, it was noted that the accused had run away with company cash amounting to US$5 800.

Till Operator Vanishes With US$5 800

A 28-year-old till operator in Chiredzi allegedly stole more than US$4 100 and R12 400 from his employer before vanishing.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said Takudzwa Chipfuwa was employed as a till operator at a wholesale in Chiredzi.
It is alleged that Chipfuwa stole the cash on 10 April this year before disappearing. Said Asst Comm Nyathi:

Police in Chiredzi are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of Takudzwa Chipfuwa aged 28 who is being sought in connection with a case of theft that occurred on April 10, 2023, at a wholesale shop.
The suspect allegedly stole US$4 102.50 and R12 483,50 at the shop where he was employed as a till operator.
The last known address of the suspect is 1836 Denhe Road Tshovani, Chiredzi.

Till Operator Disappears With Over US$4 100, R12 400

Two police officers were arrested recently on allegations of stealing US$158 000 from a suspect.
Addmore Musiza (34) and Tafara Machokoto (41) appeared before Harare magistrate Stanford Mambanje on Wednesday facing criminal abuse of office charges.
They were remanded in custody.
Prosecutors said that on 03 March 2023, at around 7 PM, Musiza and Machokoto who are stationed at CID Stores and Business, were assigned to investigate a theft case at National Foods.
The two interviewed the suspect, Edward Davai Mudowaye who had been arrested for stealing US$158 000 stolen from, National Foods, Aspindale, where he was employed.
Mudowaya said that he had given the money to Susan Jiri for safekeeping.
The suspect then led the two to Block 7 836 Matapi Flats, Mbare and recovered the loot from Jiri.
However, they did not bring back the cash as recovered property but instead shared it among themselves.
It is further alleged that the two later took Mudowaya to court claiming that they did not recover anything from him.
It is alleged that CID Homicide detectives received information about the offence and arrested the duo.
Musiza was allegedly found in possession of US$56 000 which he had buried in a maize field about 400 metres from his house.
Machokoto was found in possession of US$22 000 which he had given to his aunt in Aspindale Park, Harare.
Another US$3000 was recovered from Jiri.

Two Police Officers Steal US$158 000 From Thief

A Mutare-based 65-year-old African Apostolic Church bishop, Charles Tekeshe, allegedly broke into a congregant’s house and stole US$10 800 that was stashed under a bed.
Tekeshe recently appeared before Mutare magistrate, Ivy Musavengana charged with unlawful entry into premises as defined in Section 131(2) (e) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, Chapter 9:23.
Tekeshe was granted bail and remanded to 27 March for trial.
Prosecuting, Sandra Mlambo said Tekeshe broke into Hedsen Mabhutso’s house through the window and stole US$10 800. Said Mlambo:

On May 18, 2021, and in Dangamvura, Mutare, Mr. Mabhutso locked his children in the house and left for his workplace in the company of his wife.
He secured all his property, including the US$10 800 which was stashed under the bed in his bedroom.
At around 10 AM, Tekeshe was seen arriving at Mr Mabhutso’s house by the complainant’s eight-year-old son. Tekeshe was holding a blue box in his hands.
Tekeshe inquired whether the complainant and his wife were present through the window and was told they were away.

Tekeshe allegedly ordered the minor child to open the kitchen window.
The child complied and Tekeshe went into the house through the window. Said Mlambo:

While inside the house, Tekeshe proceeded to Mr Mabhutso’s bedroom where he stole US$10 800 before going out through the same window.
</blockquote>
Tekeshe allegedly ordered the minor to wipe off his feet and fingerprints using a cloth before he left the house.
Mabhutso returned home on the same day around 7 PM and his son narrated what had happened during his absence.
He went to his bedroom and discovered that his money had been stolen.
Mabhutso reported the matter at ZRP Dangamvura and Tekeshe was arrested. Nothing was recovered.

Bishop Breaks Into Congregant's House, Steals US$10 800

US$15 000 was reportedly stolen from a safe in a Roman Catholic Church priest’s bedroom on the church premises last month.
Father Aurelio Ayala (36) who is the priest-in-charge of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Kumalo, Bulawayo, filed a police report after discovering that the money was missing on 28 January.
His assistant, Fr Edwards, was then picked up by the police to assist with investigations.
Fr Ayala confirmed the incident to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/us15-000-stolen-from-catholic-priests-bedroom/">Sunday News</a> on Saturday, saying his assistant was questioned by the police in connection with the theft and later released. He said:

I can confirm that US$15 000 belonging to the church was stolen from a safe in my bedroom. I reported the matter to the police and investigations are underway.
I can also confirm that my assistant Fr Edwards was recently taken for inquiry by the police although this is not necessarily to say he is the suspect. He was questioned and released.

In January last year, thieves broke into the Roman Catholic Church’s St Andrew’s Parish in Kingsdale, Bulawayo and stole sacred vessels used to conduct mass.

US$15 000 Stolen From Roman Catholic Priest’s Bedroom

A 43-year-old Bulawayo-based self-styled prophetess was recently sentenced to 12 months imprisonment after she misappropriated US$1 700 belonging to her client.
The “prophetess”, Sidelile Masera Moyo (43) of Induna Barracks in Bulawayo, was approached by Khulisani Moyo who intended to sell his car.
Khulisani was among several congregants who lined up at Sidelile’s shrine to be prayed for.
According to <a href="https://www.bmetro.co.zw/god-has-spent-your-money-prophetess-dupes-client/">B-Metro</a>, Khulisani had failed to sell his car on several occasions, and desperation to find a buyer pushed him to Sidelile’s shrine for prayers.
After about two days, Khulisani returned to the shrine and informed the prophetess that the car had been bought for US$2 200.
Sidelile told him to wrap the money in white and black pieces of cloth and bring it back for prayers.
She reportedly told her client that she would keep the money for three days and pray over it to cast out evil spirits that might be following Khulisani.
Khulisani complied and returned to collect his money after three days but was told to come the following day.
She kept telling him to return the following day every time he went to collect his money, claiming that strong evil spirits were holding it.
Khulisani eventually realised that he had been duped and the prophetess also confessed she had used US$1700 to settle her debts and was left with US$500. He reported the matter to the police.
On Tuesday this week, Sidelile appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Shepherd Mnjanja facing a theft charge.
She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.
However, three months were suspended on condition that she does not commit a similar offence within a period of five years.
A further four months were suspended on condition that she restitutes Khulisani US$1 700.
The remaining five months were suspended on condition that she performs 175 hours of community service.

"Prophetess" Steals US$1 700 From Client

A man who was travelling from Harare to Banket snatched a satchel containing US$65 000 from the boot of a car he was travelling in.
The driver had stopped at Banket Shopping Centre Bus Stop and the suspect took the opportunity to grab the bag and flee into the bush.
Police said the incident occurred on 29 January this year.
The alleged thief and his three accomplices have since been arrested and US$37 907 cash, plus a Mercedes Benz bought using part of the loot was recovered. Police said:

The complainant had offered a lift to Jey Mushati from Harare to Banket. After reaching his destination, Jey Mushati stole the money which was stashed in a bag in the boot of the complainant’s vehicle, before running away in the bush.
The other suspects chased Jey Mushati and connived to share the loot. The arrest led to the recovery of US$ 37 907 cash and a Mercedes Benz, registration number AFC 3071 which had been bought by Jey Mushati using the proceeds from the loot.
We continue to appeal to members of the public to desist from carrying large sums of money as they will likely fall prey to criminals.

Passenger Steals US$65 000 And Flees Into The Bush

Police have arrested seven suspects for rape, armed robbery, unlawful entry into premises, and theft cases that occurred in Chinhoyi, Kadoma and Mhangura between 10 and 24 January 2023.
In a statement, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi also appealed to members of the public for information that may lead to the arrest of two suspects who are still at large. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Prince Dube (23), Maxwell Karoterote (28), Dennis Tshuma (24), Lloyd Makiwa (28), Maxwell Arozho Adamson Sikanyika (36), Brian Sibanda (32) and Tinashe Gandawa (27) and Brian Bhamu (27) in connection with five cases of armed robbery, rape, unlawful entry into premises and theft which occurred in Chinhoyi, Kadoma and Mhangura between 10th January 2023 and 24th January 2023.
On 23rd January 2023, detectives in Chinhoyi arrested the suspects after receiving information that the suspects were seen sharing some groceries stolen at Abundance Grace Shop, Avelone Park Shopping Centre, Chinhoyi on 23rd January 2023 at around 0100 hours.
The arrest led to the recovery of groceries ranging from several cartons of cooking oil, washing powder and an HP Pro-book Laptop.
Further investigations by the police led to the recovery of the suspects’ getaway vehicle, a Honda Fit vehicle, registration number AFS 9184, a sword, two machetes, two Colombian knives, seven cellphones, a pellet gun, one set of silver pots, two vehicle wheels, a 32-inch Hisense television and a 12 volts battery.
The suspects were linked to cases of rape and robbery in which some groceries, US$35 and three cellphones were stolen from a couple before the wife was raped on 10th January 2023 at a house in St Ives, Chinhoyi.
In another case which occurred on 14th January 2023, the suspects pounced at a house at Golden Kopje, Chinhoyi where they attacked four complainants with machetes before stealing US$500 cash, a cellphone and 10 grammes of gold amalgam.
On 16th January 2023, the suspects pounced at a homestead at Ngoroma Village, Kaneje, Mhangura where they attacked a man and his two wives with a machete before stealing a Nissan Note vehicle, US$1000 cash, three cellphones, a bag, Sky-fly sewing machine, various shoes and clothes.
Similarly, on 18th January 2023, the suspects pounced at a couple’s house at Plot B Lantegross Farm, Eiffel Flats, Kadoma where they stole a Toyota Runx vehicle, US$500, BWP 600, ZAR 500, two cellphones and Hisense 32 inch television.
The police established that the suspects recruited informers of close relatives for their targets who would supply information on the current financial status of the victims and then pounce on them.
The Police warn the public, especially victims’ relatives against supplying information to criminals for rewards.
Meanwhile, Police are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the two outstanding suspects identified as Brian Bhamu alias Blaka/Biggie (27) and Tafadzwa alias T-One.
