Thokozani Khupe, a proportional representative Member of Parliament (MP) for the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) party, has courageously shared her experience of battling breast cancer not once, but twice.
Khupe, now 59 years old, was first diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2011. She underwent treatment and surgery, which resulted in the surgical removal of one of her breasts.
In a motion presented to Parliament on Thursday, Khupe revealed that she is now battling another form of breast cancer, Lobular cancer, after being initially misdiagnosed and treated for ovarian cancer. She said (via <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/chiwenga-not-anointed-to-lead-zanu-pf-after-mnangagwa-party-spokesman/">ZimLive</a>):

When I was first diagnosed in Zimbabwe, they said I had ovarian cancer which had long gone. I proceeded to South Africa. Again, they said I had ovarian cancer stage 4.
I started chemotherapy in the form of injections and tablets every two weeks. I have never been sick like that in my entire life.
I was vomiting to the extent that I had a bucket on the side of my bed all the time. I had terrible diarrhoea to the extent that I would sometimes mess myself.
I was draining 6 litres of water every two weeks because it was filling up quickly – this water was a sign that my tumours were not responding to treatment hence they continued to generate this water.
I was like a nine-month-pregnant woman, I had difficulty breathing and walking. It took me time to turn when I was sleeping because I had to move an equivalent of 6kgs which I was carrying.
My doctor in South Africa then referred me back to Zimbabwe so that I could be under Palliative Care, which is the treatment and support you receive when one has a life-limiting illness because there is no improvement.
I later proceeded to India with the help of the government. I was so excited that finally, I was going to get the best treatment because many people were saying India was the best when it comes to cancer treatment.
I did all the possible tests and the diagnosis was once more stage 4 ovarian cancer which emanated from the breast cancer I had 12 years ago.
I started chemotherapy, I was supposed to do 18 cycles for 18 weeks. I was draining 6 litres of water every week.
After 15 cycles, my doctor in India said I was not responding to treatment because if I was responding the water was going to dry up but in my case, there was no change.
He then suggested that I rather go to the United Kingdom because the UK was advanced when it comes to cancer treatment.
They had modern medications and a lot of options and they also did clinical trials. In India, I was losing weight every day because I had difficulty eating to the extent that I was then weighing 68 kg. I was a moving skeleton.
All this is pointing to wrong diagnosis resulting in wrong treatment.
I then proceeded to the UK and did all the necessary tests, CT/PET scans, bloods and biopsies. The diagnosis was that I had Lobular breast cancer.
The doctor then said I was going to do 18 cycles of chemotherapy every week. I only drained water on 22nd December 2023 and started treatment on 9th January 2024. I never drained any water again.
It gradually drained away cycle after cycle. After the fourth cycle, the water disappeared, a sign that the medication was working perfectly well. I never had any side effects.
All this was a good example of the right diagnosis which subsequently resulted in the right treatment.
This is a clear indication that with modern technology, you are likely to get the right diagnosis and with the right diagnosis you are likely to get the right medication, hence my emphasis on state-of-the-art equipment.
I am a living example because my cancer was at stage four. I had to do 18 cycles, one every week and each cycle ranged from 2,000 pounds to 2,500 pounds every week.
I was sometimes doing blood transfusions because my haemoglobin was low all the time because of chemotherapy.
I would pay between £1,700 and £2,000. At times, I would do CT/PET scans to establish the extent of the cancer.
Whether cancer cells were being destroyed by the medication which cost £3,900, there were other costs for bloods, doctors’ fees and several others. How many people can afford this? The answer is very few…
I am saying this so that citizens must never be afraid if ever they are confronted with such a situation. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011.
In 2023, I had a second cancer attack which came like a thief without giving any notice. By the time I realised it, it had spread.
With all this, I was never afraid because I knew that with God’s grace and good medical attention, all was well.
I vowed that I was never going to allow cancer to take me down. I developed this fighting spirit and I am going to fight cancer to the end until it leaves my body. I know and believe that one day, my body will be free from cancer.
This is the attitude that all those with cancer must have. I have so far gone through my first phase of treatment. I am now in my second phase of treatment but look at me, I am doing perfectly well.
The only thing with cancer treatment is that there are good days and bad days. During the bad days, side effects kick in and they are at times very unpleasant. This week is my bad week, but l am managing.

Khupe then urged fellow parliamentarians to push the government to allocate more resources towards cancer treatment and awareness programmes. She said:

I now therefore, call upon this House to: request government to immediately start and intensify cancer awareness programmes in collaboration with other organisations and foundations like the Thokozani Khupe Cancer Foundation in all the 35,000 villages in Zimbabwe and all towns so that citizens are made aware of the scourge of cancer; Implore Government to invest in state-of-the-art equipment for Mpilo and Parirenyatwa Hospitals as starting point and equip these two hospitals with modern Computed Tomography (CT) and positron emission tomography (PET) Scans, Radiation machines and all kinds of chemotherapies for all stages of cancer; and Government to further move with speed and fully fund universities so that they start, without any further delays, researching on new and modern cancer medicines.

Khupe’s motion was seconded by Southerton MP Bridget Nyandoro.

There is an audio clip going around on social media featuring Morgan Tsvangirai, the late former Prime Minister of Zimbabwe. In the clip, Tsvangirai talks about the appointment of Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri as Vice Presidents of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). He clarifies that these appointments were not intended to undermine Thokozani Khupe, who had been elected by the MDC Congress. Tsvangirai also mentions that in his absence, Khupe would act on his behalf. He added:

If I’m not there, she acts on my behalf. In fact, let me say, party ino iyi (this party), we hope it’s not a one-off party. But isusu vana Tsvangirai we are just there for a period but the future is inherited by others who will take over the leadership. <h3>Some Context:</h3>
The audio clip has emerged during an ongoing leadership crisis in the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa. Sengezo Tshabangu, claiming to be the party’s interim Secretary General, has recalled numerous CCC Parliamentarians and Councillors, causing further turmoil. Some believe this crisis is connected to the leadership crisis in the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) that led to the formation of the CCC.
During Morgan Tsvangirai’s last days in 2018, Chamisa, Thokozani Khupe, and Elias Mudzuri vied for leadership of the MDC. Chamisa eventually became the leader, with allegations that Tsvangirai had appointed him to lead the party that originated from Workers’ Unions in 1999. However, after the 2018 elections, the leadership dispute ended up in court, and the Supreme Court ruled that Chamisa had unlawfully assumed power and was not the legitimate leader of the party.
Following the Supreme Court ruling, the MDC’s 2014 structures were reinstated, with Douglas Mwonzora as the Secretary-General. Khupe assumed interim leadership, awaiting the Congress to elect permanent leadership. Before the congress, several individuals aligned with Chamisa were recalled from Parliament and local authorities. Dissatisfied officials joined forces with Chamisa and formed the CCC.
The CCC now faces its own leadership crisis, with some suggesting that it was orchestrated by the ruling ZANU PF party to dismantle the opposition. Others blame Tsvangirai’s appointments for the confusion in the opposition.

A cross-section of Zimbabweans have taken to social media platform site X (formerly Twitter) to vent their frustration over the move by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to direct Treasury to fund Thokozani Khupe’s cancer treatment in India.
While others have commended the government for the gesture, citizens say cancer treatment should be readily available at public hospitals and affordable for all those who need it.
Khupe is a former Deputy Prime Minister (2009-2013) and currently a CCC proportional representation legislator.
Some Zimbabweans who shared their thoughts on social media about the development bemoaned the country’s dilapidated health system which has resulted in countless avoidable deaths as the majority of citizens cannot afford to seek treatment abroad.
Only political and business elites, and those connected to the elites can fund trips to South Africa, India, Singapore and China, among other countries for medical care.
An X user, Bvudzijena asked “Ko Mary Mubaiwa?” (what about Marry Mubaiwa?) in reference to Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s ex-wife who was allegedly blocked from travelling to South Africa for medical treatment and eventually had her right arm amputated.
A specialist trauma and orthopaedic surgeon, Dr John Nyahunzvi, recommended amputation for Marry’s right hand above her elbow due to severe sepsis syndrome, non-healing ulcer and chronic osteomyelitis.
She is currently being tried for attempted murder after she allegedly tried to pull out an intravenous life-saving tube from her then husband, VP Chiwenga, at a South African hospital in 2018.
Respected journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono said:

There is NO single working radiotherapy cancer treatment machine in all public hospitals in Zimbabwe.
Ordinary citizens are dying daily from treatable cancer because politicians have looted public funds meant to buy these machines.
Political Elites fly out, what about the poor?

Skilled Rebhara said: “For the last 5 years there has been no working radiotherapy machine in the public health sector. many patients are being diagnosed with cancer vodii. why can’t they just buy the radiotherapy machine!!”
Privilledge Mhlanga wrote: “Before, during and after. The narrative stays the same. Dr Khupe is only helped because she is known. If Dr Khupe had not participated in politics like the majority, I think she would not have been assisted. Let us work to build a better country for all. Quick recovery Dr Khupe.“
Tete Aunty said: “I lost my brother to cancer because he is not politically connected.“
Pepukai Maringe wrote: “An ordinary person like Thomas Madirativhange will be waving goodbye to friends and relatives as a result because he is too far away to be recognizes for assistance.“
Kudakwashe Sibanda said: “Good for Makhuphe, but what about others?“
Habibi said: “All the funds being used to finance this medical tourism can be channelled to purchasing a radiotherapy machine.“

"What About Marry Mubaiwa?", Zimbabweans React To Government's Funding Of Khupe's Cancer Treatment In India

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reportedly authorised Treasury to fully fund opposition CCC Senator, Thokozani Khupe’s medical trip to India.
Posting on the social media site X, Presidential spokesperson George Charamba said Khupe is set to undergo cancer treatment in India and the government will cover the expenses. <a href="https://x.com/dhonzamusoro007/status/1704762326564618673?s=20">He wrote</a>:

President ED Mnangagwa has authorised Govt to fully fund [Thokozani Khupe]’s medical trip to India. She is stricken by resurgent cancer.
</blockquote>
Just hours after she had been sworn in as a Senator in the 10th Parliament of Zimbabwe on 07 September, Khupe, who looked frail at the event, revealed that she had a second cancer attack.
Khupe was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and had to undergo treatment and surgery.
In response to her own experience, she established the Thokozani Khupe Cancer Foundation (TKCF) in 2012, aiming to raise awareness about cancer.

Govt Says To Fund Thokozani Khupe's Medical Trip To India

The spokesperson for the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), Fadzayi Mahere, has highlighted political intimidation and violence as significant factors contributing to women’s reluctance to assume political leadership positions. This reluctance is evident in the low participation rate of only 11% of women in this year’s general elections, despite women comprising the majority of the country’s population. Among the 11 individuals vying for the presidency, Elisabeth Valerio of the United Zimbabwe Alliance is the sole female candidate.
In the previous 2018 elections, there were a record-breaking four female contenders for the presidency. However, when candidate registration closed for the National Assembly in this election cycle, the major political parties had fielded fewer than 12% women candidates each. In the National Assembly, there are 70 women candidates compared to 637 men across 210 constituencies, representing a meagre 11% of the overall candidate pool, a decline from the 14% figure in 2018.
During a recent press conference in Harare, Fadzayi Mahere of the Citizens Coalition for Change emphasized that the hostile political environment in the country acts as a deterrent for women actively engaging in politics. She said:

We would have loved to see more women participating in leadership positions but sadly violence, harassment and intimidation are forcing women to shy away.
We must create a safe and inclusive environment where women can participate, express their ideas and contribute to the development of our nation. Let us break these barriers and empower women to take their place in shaping the future of Zimbabwe.

Linda Masarira, the president of the Labour Economists Afrikan Democrats, expressed similar sentiments after her unsuccessful bid for the presidency. Masarira said:

As an advocate for gender equality, I am determined to challenge the patriarchal norms that persist in Zimbabwe’s political landscape. It is high time we dismantle the barriers that favour men.
Let us empower women to rise, amplify their voices, and reshape our political environment to truly reflect the diversity and strength of our nation.
</blockquote>
Section 17 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, however, stipulates the promotion of full gender balance and the complete participation of women, based on equality with men, in all spheres of Zimbabwean society.
In response to the low participation of women, the Women’s Institute for Leadership Development (WILD) emphasised that it would further relegate women to the periphery of development. WILD expressed concern that this marginalisation would hinder women’s involvement in decision-making processes, which is detrimental to democracy and perpetuates gender inequality. Additionally, it warned that women’s concerns regarding opportunities, public resource management, and service delivery would not receive adequate prioritization.

Fadzayi Mahere: Political Intimidation And Violence Deter Women From Leadership

Professor Jonathan Moyo, Zimbabwe’s former Information Minister, has advised former Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Thokozani Khupe not to contest against Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube for the Cowdray Park parliamentary constituency seat in Bulawayo during the 23 August 2023 general election.
Moyo argued that Ncube is the best possible candidate for Cowdray Park and the region. He argued that if the elections are about deploying the most able and best-positioned candidate with the self-evident capacity to get things done for the community, Ncube deserves the support of everyone in Cowdray Park and the region, including and particularly from Dr. Khupe.
Moyo acknowledged that his statement was not an indictment of Dr. Khupe but an acknowledgement of the objective reality on the ground in Cowdray Park and the region. He argued that Khupe has not been able to do anything differently or better for the constituency or the region since she first went to parliament in 2000. On the other hand, Moyo claimed that Ncube has everything to offer from which the community and the region have a lot to benefit. He said:

All things considered, and without taking anything from or casting any aspersions on her, Dr Khupe who indeed is very much adored in the region, will be well advised not to take a dive into this one.
This is because Prof Mthuli Ncube is the best possible candidate for Cowdray Park and the region.
If truth be told, and if elections are about having communities deploy their most able and best positioned or placed sons or daughters with self-evident capacity to get things done for the community, then it is manifestly clear that Prof Ncube deserves the support from everyone not only in Cowdray Park but also across the region, including and particularly from Dr Khupe.
It is not an indictment of Dr Khupe but an acknowledgement of the objective reality on the ground in Cowdray Park and the region that there is really hardly much that she would be able to do differently or better now for either the constituency or the region which she has not been able to do since 2000, when she first went to Parliament.
If Dr Khupe returned to Parliament in August 2023, she would merely add to the dwindling minority numbers of the opposition benches. That would perhaps mean something to her personally, as it has meant since 2000, but it will not mean anything to or for Cowdray Park, let alone the region.
On the other hand, Prof Ncube has nothing much if anything to gain personally, but he has everything to offer from which the community and the region have a lot to benefit.
This is an objective fact. It’s praxis, and that’s what real politics is all about: the community using what it has [Prof Ncube] to get what it needs [development] and regular high level attention as might be necessary from time to time over the next five years.
But of course Dr Khupe has a constitutional right to stand for the parliamentary election in Cowdray Park or anywhere else for that matter. Howevet, if she stands in Cowdray Park, she should not be surprised to see many who have supported her in her trials and tribulations in the past, and who have tremendous respect for her, do the right thing to support Prof Ncube this time round.
This is because in this case, and on this occasion, support for Prof Ncube is support for everyone in Cowdray Park, the region and the nation, given the truism that the best national politics is local!

Mthuli Ncube has been confirmed as the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">ZANU PF candidate</a> for the Cowdray Park constituency. He emerged as the uncontested candidate in the party primaries. Thokozani Khupe will be representing the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) led by Nelson Chamisa.
<h3>Some Context:</h3>
Matabeleland in Zimbabwe feels it has been neglected by the government in terms of development and infrastructure projects, resulting in poor living conditions for its residents. The region has inadequate road networks, limited access to clean water, poor health facilities, unreliable electricity supply, and inadequate schools.
The region’s history of political tensions with the ruling party and being predominantly inhabited by the Ndebele ethnic group may have contributed to its neglect. Efforts by civil society organizations and community leaders to address this issue have been made, but the situation remains a challenge for many residents.
According to Moyo’s reasoning, a person of Mthuli Ncube’s status as Minister of Finance may have a better chance of changing the trajectory of development in Matabeleland compared to a mere Member of Parliament if Thokozani Khupe were to win.

Jonathan Moyo: Khupe Shouldn't Contest Against Mthuli Ncube For Cowdray Park

Former Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe is reportedly set to contest the newly-created Cowdray Park National Assembly seat on a Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) ticket in forthcoming elections.
Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube will represent ZANU PF in Cowdray Park after he sailed through uncontested during the party’s primary elections.
The CCC candidate selection process took place last Wednesday countrywide and those nominated will then fight it out in internal elections on a date yet to be advised.
<a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/chaos-in-ccc-candidate-selection/">The Sunday News</a> reported that in Bulawayo, nominations include Khupe for Cowdray Park and Sindiso Mazibisa who is set to battle it out with incumbent MP, Anele Ndebele and political activist, Promise Mkhwananzi in Magwegwe.
In Bulawayo South, incumbent Makokoba MP, Alderman James Sithole will face businessman Francis Mangwendeza while the party’s deputy spokesperson Gift “Ostallos” Siziba has been nominated for the Pelandaba-Tshabalala constituency.
In Nketa, Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) chairperson, Ambrose Sibindi was nominated together with Obert Manduna and the incumbent MP, Phelela Masuku.
David Coltart is reportedly set to contest Councillor Tawanda Ruzive in Ward Five, amid indications that CCC is pushing for Coltart to be the next city’s mayor.
The majority of the Bulawayo councillors, who have previously denied allegiance to Douglas Mwonzora, were reportedly nominated in the process.
CCC spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere, recently told reporters that the process has at least four stages with the nomination being the first stage. She said:

Following the nomination [process], there is going to be a vetting process and the fact that one has been nominated is not the end of the situation, it doesn’t mean that you are yet eligible to be a candidate.
There will also be a process of community consensus building where citizens will come together and be told there is X, there is Y candidate, who do you prefer and why, they have an opportunity to make their case, deliver a very brief manifesto of what they plan to deliver in their wards or constituency and also to take questions from the community concerning their eligibility to run.

Reports suggest that CCC’s so-called Change Champion in Chief Nelson Chamisa was unanimously nominated to stand as the opposition party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections.
Chamisa is the founding leader of the party and his allies have described him as the party’s “best foot” to challenge ZANU PF leader, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, for the second time after narrowly losing the race in 2018.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Thokozani Khupe has urged both men and women to get screened for breast cancer as early detection and treatment boosts one’s chances of survival.
Khupe made the call as the world dedicates the rest of October to raising awareness on breast cancer.
The former trade unionist was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2011 and underwent treatment and surgery which cost her one of her breasts.
In 2021, Khupe founded the Thokozani Khupe Cancer Foundation (TKCF) to raise awareness on cancer. She said:

It is therefore important to note that men are affected and hence the need for both sexes to do screening and self-examination. Early detection of cancer saves lives.
I am a living testimony of that. I was diagnosed 11 years ago but after treatment, I am cured and still alive even today.
The TKCF turns 10 years old this October as it was launched on the 24th of October 2012. 
We continue to advocate for the establishment of cancer screening and treatment facilities in all the 1 958 wards in Zimbabwe as well as that cancer screening and treatment must be available, affordable and accessible taking into consideration that we have only two hospitals catering for cancer.

Khupe called for the establishment of a Cancer Levy in line with the Aids Levy to make cancer treatment available, accessible and affordable for all Zimbabweans. She added:

The sad reality is, women only discover that they have breast cancer when their cancer is at stage three or four, due to a lack of awareness and barriers to health services. 
Stages three and four are advanced stages such that very little can be done.

Thokozani Khupe Urges Men To Get Screened For Breast Cancer

Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) youths attempted to block former MDC-T deputy president Thokozani Khupe from attending a CCC Bulawayo provincial assembly meeting on Saturday.
The CCC youths barred Khupe from attending the meeting which was addressed by the opposition party’s leader, Nelson Chamisa, at McDonald Hall in Bulawayo, accusing her of being a sellout. One of the youths said:

Khupe, you are not welcome here. All along you were dining and wining with (President Emmerson) Mnangagwa, busy plotting the destruction our party.
You even recalled from parliament some of our leaders whom you want to meet today. Are you not ashamed of what you did?
</blockquote>
Chamisa rebuked the youths for their intolerance, saying he did not invite Khupe to the meeting but as a citizen, she had a right to attend the meeting. Said Chamisa:

I am not a leader of a violent people; I am not a leader of a violent community and I will never accept violence.
This is why I left MDC to form a peaceful organisation with God-fearing supporters.
I do not want this coalition to resemble a Mnangagwa organisation or even that of Mugabe.
I am not happy with those youths who are blocking Khupe. I did not invite her, but she has the right, as a citizen, to be in this meeting.

Khupe later tweeted that she had attended her “first meeting as a CCC member addressed by President Chamisa in Bulawayo Macdonald Hall”.
Last month Khupe endorsed Chamisa and CCC candidates ahead of the 26 March by- elections.
CCC leadership is divided on whether to accept Khupe as a member due to her former close association with President Emmerson Mnangagwa when she was a member of the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).

Youths Block Khupe From CCC Meeting

Former MDC-T vice president Thokozani Khupe is now a member of the newly-formed Citizens Coalition For Change (CCC) party.
Khupe announced that she is now a CCC member after she attended a meeting that was addressed by the party’s leader Nelson Chamisa at Macdonald Hall in Bulawayo on Saturday. Khupe <a href="https://twitter.com/DrThoko_Khupe/status/1512817850540507142">tweeted:</a>

Khupe pledged her support to Chamisa’s CCC just before the 26 March by-elections.
However, some CCC members were reportedly reluctant to accept Khupe, warning that she might be a ZANU PF plant due to her previous association with President Emmerson Mnangagwa when she was a member of the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).
CCC interim national chairperson Thabitha Khumalo recently said she will not allow Khupe to join the party unless she apologises for her role in destroying the MDC Alliance.
Khumalo told an <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/thabitha-khumalo-vows-to-block-khupe-admission-into-ccc/">online publication</a> that will never forgive Khupe for initiating her recall from parliament when the latter was interim MDC-T president.
Meanwhile, in an interview, CCC spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere told <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/2022/04/fireworks-in-ccc-cockpit/">NewsDay</a> that the party was open to all citizens willing to join regardless of their political background. Mahere was quoted as saying:

We focus on values, actions and policies, not personalities. Chamisa said in his 2022 Agenda address that this is a year of action for change.
The guiding value is that we put the citizens first and they are at the centre of all decision-making.
The only qualification to join is that one is a citizen. The citizens will choose their leaders at the appropriate time.

Khupe through her spokesperson Ntando Ndlovu said she intended to join the CCC as an individual, not as a party leader. Said Ndlovu:

The former Deputy Prime Minister is of the view that to defeat an authoritarian government like ZANU PF, the opposition political parties must unite and form a formidable force against ZANU PF.
As it currently stands, the only capable alternative to Zanu PF is the CCC party and, therefore, she believes that opposition political players must coalesce under CCC and rally behind Chamisa.
Alliances have caused problems before. People must join as opposed to forming alliances.

Thokozani Khupe Joins Citizens Coalition For Change

Former MDC-T deputy president Thokozani Khupe is expected to attend the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) rally set for Bulawayo on Saturday.
Recent reports claim Khupe is open to working together with CCC leader Nelson Chamisa in spite of their acrimonious separation in 2018 following the death of MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai.
New Zimbabwe reported sources as saying Khupe could be on the brink of joining hands with CCC following her recent expulsion from the MDC-T led by Douglas Mwonzora. Said a source:

The president could be at White City Stadium on Saturday. If she does make it to the rally, this will be confirmation she is coming back, rejoining her former comrades in the opposition party.
</blockquote>
Khupe’s spokesperson Ntandoyenkosi Ndlovu could neither confirm nor deny that Khupe will grace the CCC rally on Saturday. He said:

We do not have any plans regarding the weekend CCC rally. In politics a day is too long for one to decide on what they are going to be doing over the weekend, we will let you know on Saturday.

Chamisa declared that CCC will welcome all former MDC members but stressed that they will join the party on the basis they “move to the back of the bus.”
He made the remarks while launching the CCC’s by-elections campaign at Zimbabwe Grounds in Harare two weeks ago.

Thokozani Khupe has said the government must not take sides in the MDC-T factional fights like what happened in the past when it “supported Nelson Chamisa” at her expense. 
The former deputy prime minister and Makokoba legislator is embroiled in a power struggle with Mwonzora who suspended her for a cocktail of issues including dining with Nelson Chamisa’s MDC Alliance, a rival to the MDC-T. 
Khupe, however, held a presser in Bulawayo on Friday where she declared that she was the party leader, on an interim basis adding, however, that the party had “officially split.” She expressed fears that the government would take sides in the matter. Khupe said:

I would like to conclude by emphasising that today the 21st day of January 2022, the MDC-T has two formations.
I am therefore pleading with other political parties; as the MDC-T, I am calling on Parliament, a legislative organ of the state, to desist from taking sides as well as local government, it happened before, and it must not happen again.
At the same time, I am calling on the ministry of Justice to be fair and just in dealing with our matter.

Her spokesperson, Ntando Ndlovu, Friday spoke on Khupe’s remarks and explained what she meant by claims that the government took sides in the past amid claims by some that she meant the government assisted MDC-T to dismantle MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa. Ndlovu said:

The Parliament and Justice ministry should not side with Mwonzora as they did with Chamisa against Dr Khupe in 2018 when she was recalled.
The Parliament has not been fair on how it dealt with the dispute between Dr Khupe and Chamisa. In 2018, Parliament dismissed her letter in which she had notified it to stop considering Chamisa’s intention to recall her, and she was subsequently recalled.
The Justice ministry also went on to allocate funds under the Political Parties (Finance) Act to Chamisa after she had advised that the party did not qualify for the funds. That is the partiality that she was referring to and that it must not happen again in this case.

This comes amid allegations that the state is sponsoring turbulences in the opposition party.
Some political analysts say the ruling party does not create but only capitalises on squabbles in the opposition.

Khupe: Govt Shouldn't Side With Mwonzora As They Did With Chamisa Against Me

The Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T has suspended its first vice president Thokozani Khupe with immediate effect.
In a statement this Thursday, MDC-T Secretary For Information and Publicity Witness Dube said the party is investigating several allegations made against Khupe.
He however did not specify the allegations. Below is the full statement by Dube:

The MDC T wishes to advise that First Vice President Dr Thokozani Khupe has been suspended.
A letter dated 12 January 2022 was personally delivered to Dr Khupe and her legal team.
The suspension was with immediate effect, pending investigations into the various allegations levelled against her.
Investigations are being conducted by a team led by the party’s Arbiter General.
The suspension is in line with the party constitution and is a result of certain issues that arose.
Once the said issues are investigated and fully resolved, the party will communicate such.

MDC-T Suspends First Vice President Thokozani Khupe

Thokozani Khupe, who lost to Douglas Mwonzora on Sunday has maintained she is the party’s acting president and Mwonzora is suspended, the Daily News reports.
While speaking to the publication after the chaotic congress on Sunday Khupe said she will hold a standing committee meeting to map the way forward:
<blockquote>I suspended Mwonzora. That so-called extra-ordinary congress was a non-event. I am still the acting president of the party. We are going to have our national council and map the way forward.
The voters’ roll was changed. I wanted the party to have a free and fair election. I said after a few provinces voted that the election is a non-event.
Our agents were being thrown out. They were being intimidated. The (Mwonzora) thugs were harassing everyone and it was not an election.
All this was pre-planned to rig elections. Mwonzora remains suspended as the party is investigating his conduct.</blockquote>
However legal experts including Khupe’s former <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/12/30/only-the-court-can-overturn-the-outcome-of-the-mdc-t-congress-obert-gutu/">ally Obert Gutu have said</a> for the outcome of the elections to be overturned Khupe will have to approach the courts. Gutu said:
<blockquote>In terms of the MDC constitution, the moment you enter into a contest you are no longer the holder of your position. The election has to be by secret vote conducted by an independent electoral board appointed by the party to prepare and run the election, it is the duty of the electoral board to ensure that they have a legitimate voters’ roll that is agreed on by all candidates.</blockquote>
Khupe yesterday held a standing committee meeting that resolved to fire Mwonzora from the party.

Khupe Reveals Her Targets As A Parliamentarian

The interim leader of the opposition MDC-T, Thokozani Khupe has been sworn in as a proportional representative Member of Parliament.
Khupe was sworn in together with six other members of the MDC-T to replace a group of MDC Alliance legislators whom the MDC-T recalled from Parliament.
Speaker Jacob Mudenda announced the development indicating that the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) wrote a letter written to Parliament on the matter.
The swearing-in ceremony was presided over by Clerk of Parliament Kennedy Chokuda in the National Assembly this Wednesday.
The other six members who were sworn in are Lindani Moyo, Memory Munotinzwa, Winfielder Musarurwa, Sakhi January, Lwazi Sibanda and Sipho Moyo.
MDC Alliance and some analysts view the replacements as a slap in the face of democracy since the members who are being sworn in were not voted by the electorate.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has gazetted the names of legislators who will replace MDC Alliance Members of Parliament who were recalled by the MDC-T.
The names which ZEC chair, Justice Priscilla Chigumba gazetted include MDC interim president Thokozani Khupe, her spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni, Yvonne Winfielda Musarurwa, Lindani Moyo, January Sawuke, Memory Munochinzwa, Lwazi Sibanda, Sipho Mokone, Molly Dorothy Ndlovu, Tamani Moyo, Gertrude Moyo, Piniel Denga, Chief Ndlovu, Nomalanga Khumalo and Teti Chisorochengwe.

<blockquote>It is hereby notified, in terms of section 39(7)(a) of the Electoral Act [Chapter 2:13], that persons listed in the Schedule nominated by the MDC -T party to fill the vacancies that occurred among the party list members of the National Assembly and the Senate following the recall of the incumbent members by the MDC-T party on the grounds that they had ceased to be members of that party, have been appointed as National Assembly party-list members and Senators respectively with effect from the date of publication of this notice.</blockquote>
This comes as by-elections to replace the recalled legislators and councillors are in limbo after the Health Minister, Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has amended the COVID-19 Regulations Act to block elections.
MDC-T leadership has since March this year been recalling MPs and councillors aligned to MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.

Names Of MPs To Replace Recalled MDC Alliance MPs Gazetted

On Sunday we published a breaking story that we had aggregated from The Zimbabwean that MDC T interim leader Thokozani Khupe will be sworn in as the official leader of the opposition today 15 September 2020.
This tuned out to be fake news or unverified news because a) The Zimbabwean took down the article we had aggregated the story from, b) the Ministry of information secretary Nick Mangwana said he has no idea about anything of that sort when we contacted him.
We as aggregators use other publications as our main source of our news summaries, and we trusted our source on the issue and unfortunately carried over any mistake they might have made in writing the article and for that, we want to apologise to our readers.

RETRACTION: Khupe Is Not Being Sworn In Today

30 000 voters reportedly responded to ZEC’s call to lodge their complaints should they have any objections in letting the elections body replace elected MDC Alliance legislators with nominees of a rival faction, The Daily News on Sunday reports.
ZEC confirmed receiving the voters’ objections as Chief Elections Officer Utoile Silaigwana said:
<blockquote>We have received the volumes of objections, but as you might be aware, the closing date for their receipt was yesterday (Friday), so we have not gone through them as yet. We have to verify to see if they were submitted in terms of the electoral law. If they are valid, there is a provision to disqualify someone from occupying the seat.</blockquote>
According to the electoral act, ZEC is supposed to review the objections, and is there are no valid reasons for objecting ZEC will conclude that there are no grounds for objecting the candidature:
<blockquote>Having considered every objection received, and having found that there are valid grounds for objecting to the candidature, afford the political party concerned to make representations on the matter. If, having considered any representations of the political party received in terms of subsection (7)(b), the Commission is still of the view that there are valid grounds for objecting to the candidature, the Commission shall proceed in accordance with subsection (4)(a), and subsections (5), (6) and (7) shall thereafter apply until a qualified person is identified to fill the vacancy concerned,</blockquote>
Khupe had nominated herself and 15 other people to replace the legislators she recalled from parly.

30 000 Voters Reject Khupe's MPs

Youths in the opposition MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe have criticised the ZANU PF government for using state-controlled institutions to attack government critics.
They speak amid reports that the government is using state security agents to abduct and torture government critics including opposition activists and human rights defenders.
Speaking on Saturday, Alfred Dzirutwe, the party’s youth assembly acting secretary-general implored the government to address economic and humanitarian and political crises in the country. He said:
<blockquote>The (MDC-T) youth wing is worried about the deteriorating socio-economic and political situation in Zimbabwe which has seen the country experiencing a sad episode of abuse by the government of the day.
The government is using State-controlled institutions to attack perceived enemies of the State, through abductions, arrests, and harassment of political activists, civil rights leaders, human rights defenders, and journalists.</blockquote>
He added that the government’s conduct constituted an attack on basic tenets of democracy, justice, rule of law and constitutional supremacy.
MDC-T has been silent on alleged abuses prompting some to say they are puppets of the ruling ZANU PF.

MDC-T Youths Criticise Govt For Using State-Controlled Institutions To Attack Govt Critics

The rapporteur of the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) forum Kwanele Hlabangana has written to the Editor of ZIMLIVE, an online publication making some clarifications on the letters the forum sent to the United States Senate earlier this year.
Hlabangana was responding to a ZIMLIVE article which suggested that the Zimbabwean government paid a United States lobbying firm to project MDC-T president Thokozani Khupe as the legitimate leader of Zimbabwe’s opposition.

POLAD Speaks On Letters Sent To The US Senate

The government has barred the MDC-T’s court-ordered extraordinary congress that was scheduled for the 31st of this month.
In response to MDC-T leader, Thokozani Khupe’s letter to the Ministry of Health and Child Care which sought clearance to hold the congress, authorities cited the coronavirus pandemic as the reason why the opposition party should not have the congress.
The acting permanent secretary in the ministry of Health and Child Care, Gibson Mhlanga responded to the letter:
<blockquote>Your request for clearance to hold an extraordinary congress on 31 July 2020 is not approved. 
We are in a Covid-19 lockdown and one of the requirements is that there must not be any public gatherings of more than 50 people. The delegates that you are indicating exceed the recommended number.
Based on this requirement, it is, therefore, impossible to hold the meeting in this environment.</blockquote>
The congress was expected to have 4500 delegates. Meanwhile, Khupe’s spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni told the Daily News that the party was consulting its lawyers to chart the way forward.

Govt Bars MDC-T's Court-Ordered Extraordinary Congress

The MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe has changed the date on the holding of its extraordinary congress by bringing it back to July 31, the date originally earmarked for the Indaba.
Last week MDC-T deputy spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni announced that the Supreme Court-directed extra-ordinary congress had been moved forward to between September 4 and 6 this year.
However, speaking on Saturday to the Daily News on Sunday, Phugeni said the party’s lawyers were consulting to establish if the Supreme Court ruling allowed the party to change the dates. Said Phugeni:
<blockquote>Our lawyers had an understanding that when the Chief Justice handed the judgment that directed us to hold an extraordinary congress in three months; he had given us a six-week extension.
The lawyers are now engaging the Chief Justice to get clarity on the matter and we are going to inform the nation if there are any changes when we get feedback from the authorities.</blockquote>
However, MDC-T lawyer Lovemore Madhuku told the publication that Chief Justice Malaba had not given the party the permission to push the congress dates. He said:
<blockquote>It will be wrong for them to say the Chief Justice gave them the green light to push dates forward. What they are trying to do is to take advantage of the directive he gave to suspend court activities except for urgent cases when the COVID-19 lockdown started on March 31.
The directive had nothing to do with their congress so it is their own interpretation to say if some activities were prevented from happening, we also could argue that we were bound by that directive which expired on the 11th of May.</blockquote>
The Supreme Court judgement was delivered on 31 March this year and directed interim MDC-T president Thokozani Khupe to convene an extraordinary congress – within 90 days – of the party’s 2014 structures to elect a substantive president to replace the late Morgan Tsvangirai who died in February 2018.

Khupe Considers Changing Congress Date, Again

The Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) has proposed a  number of ways through which the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) can conduct elections in the country despite the coronavirus.
The watchdog made the recommendations in a paper titled ‘How to Conduct Elections amid COVID-19: Options for Zimbabwe.’
ZESN suggested ways that reduce face to face interactions which it said need to be piloted. The watchdog further suggested:

<li>Voter and civic education, accreditation of observers, voters’ roll inspection and electioneering by candidates and political parties could be done using available ICT technologies, Zesn argued.</li>
<li>Admitted that sorely relying on ICT technologies had negatives, and “would need to be considered in light of internet penetration and accessibility, the high cost of data bundles or those without smartphones” in Zimbabwe.</li>
<li>Parties and candidates could campaign using text messages which can reach even those not on social media platforms or those without smartphones.</li>
<li>Campaign materials and information about parties and candidates platforms could be sent to voters through printed election related information booklets distributed to households nationwide.</li>
<li>Disinfecting polling stations before, during and after polling and introduction of a two tier queuing system at polling stations where voters will be brought into the voting area periodically to prevent overcrowding.</li>
<li>Sanitising, social distancing, body temperature screening, staggering voting times and regularly disinfecting voting compartments (voting day).</li>

The Zimbabwe Election Advocacy Trust (ZEAT) weighed in, saying the ban on elections was a blow to constitutionalism adding that the lifespan of the pandemic is unknown hence the need to come up with ways to ensure critical processes like elections and electioneering proceed.
Some believe that ZEC’s suspension of the election was a way of ensuring that the MDC-T leader, Thokozani Khupe replaces recalled MDC Alliance legislators with her allies.

Election Watchdog Lists Ways Through Which ZEC Can Conduct Elections Amid COVID-19

MDC-T hardliners are adamant that acting party president Thokozani Khupe should not be in the race to be the substantive president when the party holds an extra-ordinary congress (EOC) later this year, a report claims.
Khupe’s detractors believe that she has been compromised by her close association with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD).
Reinstated secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora has reportedly started campaigning for the party presidency against two other contenders, Morgen Komichi and Gift Chimanikire.
An unnamed aide to Mwonzora told NewsDay that some people in the party do not want Khupe to remain acting president for the three months stipulated in a recent Supreme Court judgement. He said:
<blockquote>The structures are clear that Khupe can’t be our president because she is too compromised, she is seen as a Zanu PF project and they don’t even want her to remain acting president for three months, they want the EOC to be done faster.
Khupe has never been in the contention for MDC presidency, she was vice at (founding leader) Morgan (Tsvangirai)’s death, that entitled her to act pending EOC.
But it ended there. She has to be realistic. The moment is not hers.</blockquote>
Meanwhile, former MDC-T secretary-general Nixon Nyikadzino believes that Khupe does not stand a chance against Mwonzora. He said:
<blockquote>She has thrown herself to the wolves. They are using her to satisfy their own ends.
For instance, Komichi can’t claim to be a constitutionalist now, when he was the one who presided over the elevation of Chamisa to the position of president.
She has fired herself from our party and she is going to fall by the wayside in Mwonzora’s MDC, it’s a dog eat dog affair.</blockquote>

MDC-T Hardliners Plot Khupe Ouster

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Thokozani_Khupe">Thokozani Khupe</a> has reportedly started mobilising members of of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) Tsvangirai faction to support her following a letter by the party’s Secretary-General Nixon Nyikadzino which purports that Khupe exited from the party.
Nyikadzino, also known as Chairman Mao asserts in the letter to the Speaker of Parliament that by accepting <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2020/04/02/full-supreme-court-ruling-on-mdc-leadership-crisis-case/">the Supreme Court ruling</a>, Khupe automatically exited from the party.
Meanwhile, the leader of the MDC-T Parliamentary caucus Mildred Dube said the two legislators (Including <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Priscilla_Misihairabwi-Mushonga">Priscilla Misihairabwi</a>) were firmly behind the leadership of Thokozani Khupe.

<blockquote>We have noted with concern some misleading and disgusting statements attributed to the former MDC-T Secretary-General Mr Nickson ‘Mao’ Nyikadzino wherein he masquerades as the new MDC-T Acting President.        
For the avoidance of doubt, we want to make it unequivocally clear to all and sundry that all MDC-T legislators remain loyal to the party as led by Dr Thokozani Khuphe and the leadership collective elected at the party’s 4th Congress.                    
Mr Nyikadzino makes baseless and unfounded allegations that the MDC-T had an inaugural congress in 2018. This is wholly untrue, the fact of the matter is that a dispute within the party arose soon after the death of our founding father Dr Morgan Tsvangirai on the procedure to fill his vacancy.
Informed by a legal opinion from Adv Matinenga, the party held an extraordinary congress at Stanley square in Bulawayo as provided for in the MDC constitution clause 9.21.1. 
This extraordinary congress was attended by more than 5000 eligible delegates drawn from our party structures and at no point did we invite non-members to that Extra-Ordinary Congress. 
We want to further put it on record that we did not register as a new party with ZEC, it is on record that our party was already registered before the death of our late leader, what we only did was to  remove the face of our late icon from the open palm &amp; contested under the MDC-T brand.      
We want to remind Mr Nyikadzino that the Supreme Court of Zimbabwe handed down a landmark judgment on the 30th of March 2020 that effectively put Dr Khuphe firmly in charge of the party that was left by Dr Tsvangirai and ordered her to convene an Extra-Ordinary Congress within 90days. 
All decisions and actions done after the 14th February 2018 are thus null and void. The net effect of the Supreme Court ruling is that the two warring MDC-T formations i.e. the MDC-T component in an electoral pact called the MDC Alliance and the original MDCT led by Dr Khupe are now ONE thing.           
Furthermore, the ruling is clear on what must be done to return the party to its founding values of internal democracy, constitutionalism and collective leadership. 
We have no doubt whatsoever that the leadership collective as elected at the party’s 4th Congress in Harare  led by our Acting President  Dr Thokozani Khuphe is capable of convening the much-awaited Extra-Ordinary Congress to elect a successor to our late President Dr Morgan Tsvangirai.                   
As MDCT legislators we took an oath of office to uphold, defend and protect the Constitution of the Republic and therefore we associate ourselves fully with the Supreme Court judgment.
We want to warn Mr Nyikadzino that his infantile and illogical statements are directly in contempt of court and if he continues with such actions we will not hesitate to seek legal recourse. </blockquote>

Khupe Issues Stern Warning To Nyikadzino

MDC Alliance co-vice president Welshman Ncube has said the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T will not be able to hold an extraordinary congress as it lacks the required quorum.
In an interview with CITE, Ncube said Khupe, Douglas Mwonzora and Morgen Komichi cannot implement the Supreme Court judgement which declared that Khupe is the legitimate MDC-T acting president because the 2014 structures are no longer there.
The majority of the people who were in the structures are now within the MDC Alliance structures. Said Ncube:
<blockquote>Unless they create fake structures they are incapable of implementing that Supreme Court judgement because those 2014 structures in 2018 they didn’t exist.
If they go to individuals to say we want to put you in structures those individuals will say we don’t want because they are members of the MDC Alliance, they are not interested in this Zanu PF project, it is an impossibility it can’t be done.
They can’t convene a meeting of the National Council with a quorum, they cannot hold a congress without a quorum. Remember that congress will require two-thirds of congress members for you to have congress. Where are they going to get it from?</blockquote>
Mwonzora is however on record saying if people decided to boycott the congress, a decision will be made on their behalf by others.
