The government of the Kingdom of Eswatini has strongly denied the allegations levelled against King Mswati III concerning the killing of human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko. The 52-year-old lawyer was <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwean-activists-outraged-over-assassination-of-eswatini-lawyer/">shot dead</a> in his home on the evening of January 21, 2023.
According to reports from Swaziland News, Maseko’s death occurred shortly after King Mswati III issued a warning to those advocating for democracy, stating that his mercenaries would deal with them. Maseko was known for his activism and outspoken criticism of the Eswatini government. In 2014, he faced a two-year prison sentence alongside Bheki Makhubu, the editor of The Nation news magazine, for contempt of court due to articles that were critical of the government and judiciary. Human rights organizations, both within and outside of Eswatini, have expressed suspicions that the King may have had a hand in Maseko’s untimely demise.
In response to these allegations, the government of Eswatini has released a statement, which was seen by Pindula News, threatening decisive action against individuals and human rights organizations making such claims. Read the statement:

<h3>GOVERNMENT STATEMENT MALICIOUS CAMPAIGNS TO TARNISH HIS MAJESTY AND THE COUNTRY’S IMAGE</h3>
Government notes the ongoing slander against the King and Ingwenyama of the Kingdom of Eswatini, His Majesty King Mswati III, by certain individuals and human rights organisations who have continued to make unfounded allegations that His Majesty is involved in the killing of human rights lawyer, Thulani Maseko.
Government also notes with disappointment the glaring disparity and selective advocacy for human rights. When Chief Mahloma was brutally murdered by the so-called ‘solidarity forces’ in November 2022, no one amongst international organisations and human rights advocates advocated for the Chief or even condemned his killing. Likewise, the Police who were at work manning traffic and two warders were killed with no condemnation of this barbaric act of killing innocent lives by international and human rights organisations. We, therefore, take exceptional view to commentary by these biased so-called human rights watchers.
To this end, Government wishes to take this opportunity to caution these individuals and human rights organisations to desist from their malicious campaigns to tarnish the name and reputation of His Majesty the King. Decisive action will be taken against these people and the relevant institutions shall be approached in order for this matter to be addressed once and for all.
In the same vein, Government has taken note of what appears to be a campaign by the leadership of the Federation of the Eswatini Business Community (FESBC) to bring discord and confusion within the business community. As such, Government invited FESBC to a meeting held at the Private and Cabinet Offices on Tuesday, 02 January 2024, where they presented their objectives and modus operandi as an organisation. FESBC was advised to focus on their business objectives, which are basically to empower local businesses.
FESBC was strongly advised to desist from confrontation with other businesses but to seek peaceful redress through relevant institutions and following laid down procedure. The business federation was sternly warned to disassociate itself from violent proscribed institutions.
Government made it clear to FESBC that elements that potentially threaten investors, peace, and destabilise the country and negatively impact on the economy will not be tolerated. Government is ready and prepared to take stern measures. FESBC agreed that they will work with Government in this regard and allayed any fears that they are part of proscribed entities.
I would like to urge the Nation, on behalf of His Majesty’s Government, to continue to stand up and fight against any elements that seek to disturb the country’s hard-earned peace and stability.

Eswatini Threatens Action Against Those Linking King Mswati To The killing Of Human Rights Lawyer Thulani Maseko

The European Union (EU) has condemned the assassination of Eswatini human rights lawyer Thulani Rudolph Maseko in his home country on 21 January 2023. The EU issued a statement that reads:

Thulani Rudolph Maseko, human rights lawyer and Chairperson of the Multistakeholder Forum (MSF), was shot dead at his house on Saturday 21 January.
The European Union strongly condemns Mr Maseko’s assassination and looks forward to the results of the investigations already launched by the authorities to identify and prosecute those responsible for this brutal act.
The EU calls on the authorities to ensure the safety of all citizens, including political activists.
This tragic loss comes in a row of killings, arson attacks and other violent acts, which have destabilised the country over the past months.
Since June 2021, the EU, as a long-standing and reliable partner of the country, has followed with grave concern about the situation in Eswatini.
The EU urges the authorities to launch the comprehensive and inclusive dialogue as a matter of urgency and priority, on terms facilitated by SADC, towards national reconciliation, respect for human rights and the rule of law, and ultimately, lasting peace.

European Union Condemns Assassination Of Eswatini Lawyer

The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum has condemned the assassination of Eswatini pro-democracy activist and human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko. A statement issued by the Forum on Sunday, 22 January, reads:

<h2>CONDOLENCE MESSAGE ON THE PASSING OF ESWATINI HUMAN RIGHTS STALWART, THULANI MASEKO</h2>
The Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum (the Forum) has learnt, with a deep sense of loss, of the assassination of Eswatini pro-democracy activist and human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko. Maseko was shot in the head in his lounge on the evening of 21 January 2023.
We join the entire human rights community in mourning the loss of one of our generation’s most fierce defenders of human rights and steadfast champions of the voiceless.
Maseko was a friend of the Forum, sharing with the Forum a strong belief in social responsibility and consciousness in defending the rights, dignity, and equality of all.
He supported the Forum in advancing the human rights discourse in Africa in several civic space engagements and initiatives.
He fought tirelessly to promote respect for fundamental human rights on the continent as recently seen by his participation at the Southern Africa Human Rights Defenders Summit convened in Lusaka, Zambia from 28-29 November 2022.
Maseko was persecuted repeatedly for his unwavering defence of human rights. He was arrested on 17 March 2014 and charged with contempt of court for writing articles denouncing the lack of judicial independence in Africa’s last absolute monarchy, the then Swaziland.
His arrest, charges and pretrial detention were set aside by the Swaziland Supreme Court which ordered his release on 6 April 2014 just for him to be rearrested again two days later on 8 April 2014.
He was subsequently convicted of “contempt of court” on 17 July 2014 by the Swaziland High Court which sentenced him to two years in prison.
He endured solitary confinement during this period, criminalized for daring to speak out against an oppressive royalist regime.
Despite the persecution, he remained at the forefront of defending the rights of others following his release on 30 June 2015.
His deep-rooted conviction in assisting his fellow man was one for which he paid the ultimate price – that of his life.
It is in this spirit that the Forum mourns the devastating loss of an unwavering champion of democracy and human rights.
The Forum strongly condemns this callous and cold-blooded killing that has robbed the region of a selfless human rights stalwart. We demand justice and accountability for Thulani.
Thulani leaves behind a void that will be extremely difficult to fill. In his honour, we commit to continue to boldly defend the ongoing struggle for the realisation of all human rights for all persons.
The Forum extends heartfelt condolences to the Maseko family, his close friends, co-workers in the legal fraternity and the entire human rights community who interacted with and shared his commitment to the struggle for human rights.
The struggle for the rights and dignity of all continues, and Thulani’s assassination strengthens our resolve.

Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum Condemns "Callous" Killing Of Eswatini Lawyer

Zimbabwean activists have expressed shock following the assassination of Eswatini human rights lawyer Thulani Maseko, who was the Chairperson of the MultiStakeholder Forum (MSF).
Maseko was allegedly shot dead at his home on Saturday 21 January in the evening.
<a href="http://www.swazilandnews.co.za/fundza.php?nguyiphi=3732">Swaziland News</a> quoted Maseko’s wife, Tanele Maseko, as confirming the death of the prominent lawyer. She was quoted as saying:

It’s true, Thulani has been killed, bashaye waphola Nkhosi. Ubobuye ushaye kwanyalo kusenemaphoyisa.
</blockquote>
According to Swaziland News, Maseko’s death came a few hours after King Mswati III warned those calling for democracy that his mercenaries would deal with them.
