The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) of Zimbabwe has warned members of the public to brace for possible thunderstorms, violent winds and lightning from Friday. In the Zimbabwe Evening Weather Report and Forecast issued on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, MSD in conjunction with the Civil Protection Department said:

Briefly, cloudy conditions are expected countrywide but Matabeleland North, Bulawayo metropolitan as well as northern districts of Matabeleland South should expect some thunderstorms later in the afternoon. These thunderstorms may be associated with violent winds and lightning therefore members of the public should take note of these and protect themselves and their possessions.

The report also indicated that On Wednesday the country experienced mild conditions with clear skies in the morning. However, clouds started to develop in the mid-morning in Mashonaland Provinces, Harare metropolitan, and parts of Manicaland. Despite the clouds, temperatures remained hot throughout the country.
On Thursday, October 12, 2023 (today) more moisture is entering the country from the northwest, leading to the formation of clouds later in the day. These clouds will be prominent in Mashonaland Provinces, Harare metropolitan, and northern parts of Manicaland. The hot temperatures will persist, and the presence of moisture will make it feel even hotter.
The report highlighted several impacts of the weather conditions. The dry grass and windy conditions increase the risk of veld fires. The sunny weather enhances evapotranspiration and may lead to dehydration and heat-related illnesses. It is advised to wear a sunhat, carry an umbrella, and stay hydrated when outdoors. Starting veld fires is strongly discouraged. Crops should be adequately irrigated, and animals should be hydrated to reduce heat stress. In areas where thunderstorms are expected, appropriate shelter should be sought due to the potential for violent winds and lightning.

MSD Warns Of Thunderstorms, Violent Winds And Lightning

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Meteorological_Services_Department">Meteorological Services Department of Zimbabwe</a> has reported that scattered thunderstorms were recorded in most parts of the country. In a weather report and forecast seen by Pindula News, MSD said it expects partly cloudy weather conditions this week. Reads a report and forecast for the period 10 -12 December 2022:

<h2>ZIMBABWE EVENING WEATHER REPORT AND FORECAST ISSUED AT 1600 HRS SATURDAY 10 DECEMBER 2022 VALID UNTIL MONDAY 12 DECEMBER 2022.</h2>
Scattered thunderstorms that occurred in most parts of the country yesterday resulted in some localised heavy amounts in excess of 20mm in places like Guruve (84mm), Karoi (37mm) and Kanyemba (27mm). Partly cloudy and warm conditions dominated most places this afternoon.
<h2>FORECAST FOR TOMORROW, SUNDAY 11 DECEMBER 2022 </h2>
It should be partly cloudy and mild in the morning in Matabeleland North, parts of Mashonaland West, Midlands, Bulawayo Metropolitan and some parts of Matabeleland South. Warm and cloudy afternoon conditions with isolated thundershowers should be expected. In all other areas, mostly sunny and warm conditions are anticipated during the day becoming mild towards the evening.
<h2>IMPACTS</h2>
• Lightning is a major threat during this part of the year, being inherent in thundershowers. 
• Localized downpours are probable in places. 
• Strong winds may blow off roofs and damage property.
<h2>ACTIONS TO TAKE</h2>
• When thunder roars, go indoors. Stay indoors for at least 30 minutes after the thunderstorms have ended. These are precautionary measures to reduce the chances of being struck by lightning. 
• Note that lightning can strike from a large distance; thus if you can hear thunder within 30 seconds of seeing lightning, then you are close enough to get struck. Go into a vehicle or a house. 
• Avoid contact with water or metal objects including farming equipment when lightning is visible, even from a distance. 
• Insure crops against adverse weather such as hailstorms. 
• Be Weather-ready; always plan with the weather in mind. 
• Keep hydrated, 
• Wear a sun hat if sunny conditions are prevailing in your area.
<h2>WEATHER OUTLOOK FOR MONDAY 12 DECEMBER 2022</h2>
Sunny and hot conditions are anticipated in most places across the country except for some areas in Matabeleland South which should be cloudy with the possibility of afternoon thunderstorms.

Cloudy and warm conditions are expected across the whole country with scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms. However, localized heavy downpours (in excess of 50mm) remain a possibility over the areas along and south of the main watershed from the morning until the afternoon. It should be windy.

• Hot and humid daytime conditions may affect the body’s health, with dehydration and sunburn being common during this period.

• When thunder roars it is best to be indoors 
• Keep hydrated and avoid prolonged periods in direct sunlight especially between the hours of 10:00 am and 3:00 pm when the sun is at peak intensity. 
• Dress appropriately to keep cool during the day, and ensure vulnerable members of society are not overdressed. Wear a sunhat if you need to be engaged in outdoor activities. 
• The public is urged to avoid starting outdoor fires and safeguard against their spread by constructing fireguards that are maintained free from combustible matter and are at least 9 (nine) meters wide.
