The parents of the then nine-year-old Tsholotsho girl who fell pregnant last year and successfully delivered a baby girl through a Caesarian section, have pleaded with the Government to be allowed to legally adopt their grandchild after the Government took custody of the baby after she was born.
Their plea has been made through the Department of Social Welfare where they want their grandchild’s birth certificate to be taken in their names.
Authorities established that the mother was impregnated by a then 13-year-old relative after the father of the girl was initially arrested on suspicion of raping his daughter.
The baby was delivered at the United Bulawayo Hospitals on 14 November 2022.
The mother has since returned to school in Bulawayo and is in Grade Three.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/tsholotshos-raped-pregnant-9-year-old/">The Sunday News</a> last week at the family homestead in Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North Province, the mother of the girl (now 10 years old), gave an insight into what has transpired in the past 12 months. She said:

I left the home where they were kept in December last year and returned to Tsholotsho.
By the time I left, they had both stabilised healthwise, so I returned to the village. Since then, we have been visiting the children in Bulawayo.
The challenge is that we are having difficulties travelling to check on them monthly. It is costing us a lot.
The children are at different homes where they are being kept in Bulawayo.

She said they have asked the Government through the Department of Social Welfare to be given legal custody of both minors. She said:
<blockquote>
We want them both, they are our children. We can leave the 10-year-old for a while because she is still in school in Bulawayo.
We can see her during the school holidays until we find a lasting solution. What we are appealing for is to be given legal custody of our grandchild now. We want full custody of her.
We are working on this plan and we have informed the Department of Social Welfare which is handling the matter, so we are waiting for their response.
We want those (children) that are here at the homestead to grow up knowing their siblings, they need to get familiar with each other, which we believe is good for their wellbeing.

An official at the home where the one-year-old is being taken care of told The Sunday News that the baby was doing well. Said the official:
<blockquote>
The baby is doing well. There are no issues at all. The children were here at the same institution initially but we quickly separated them so that the mother could go back to being the child she is, she needed to move on with life so they had to be separated.
We are glad that she is back in school and all is well. She has been attending children’s camps and really enjoying herself.

The fate of the boy who is said to be responsible for the pregnancy is being handled by the courts and legal systems, said the official.
It also emerged that the social worker who was assigned to the Tsholotsho girl’s case from the onset and managed to expose what had happened, visually impaired Brighton Ndebele was killed in a road traffic accident in July.

Parents Of Tsholotsho’s Raped, Pregnant 9-year-old Want To Adopt Grandchild

A 14-year-old boy who raped and impregnated a nine-year-old Tsholotsho girl has been slapped with a three-year wholly suspended sentence, <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/pregnant-9-year-old-boy-14-slapped-with-3-year-suspended-sentence/">reported the Chronicle</a>.
The teenager, whose name is withheld, is from Masekesa Line in Tsholotsho, Matabeleland North Province.
He appeared for full trial before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Joseph Mabeza on Friday and pleaded guilty.
The teenager was represented by his lawyers Task Vhiki and Mary Nyika of Macharaga Law Chambers.
In mitigation, the 14-year-old’s lawyers said he has already endured enough punishment since his childhood has been taken away by becoming a father at a tender age.
The lawyers also argued that since he has become a father at his age, that has affected him at school and tainted his reputation in the community.
In arriving at the sentence the magistrate considered that the teenage boy and the victim are cousins.
Mabeza also said after the pair engaged in sex, a child was born and at his age, the teenager has become a father.
The magistrate also ruled that the teenager cannot be thrown into jail where there are hardened criminals.
The court heard that the Tsholotsho girl, who made national headlines last year after it was discovered that she was seven months pregnant, and the boy are cousins.
At a date not known to the prosecutor but sometime in February 2022, the minor and her two sisters who were aged eight and 14 at the time visited their relative and spent a night there.
The minor who was doing Grade Three slept with her sisters in the kitchen and the teenage boy also slept in the kitchen but alone.
Prosecutors said that during the night the boy woke up and sneaked into the minor’s blankets and raped her.
The minor, however, did not reveal to anyone that she was raped by her cousin.
The matter came to light after her mother got suspicious after seeing her stomach bulging and took her to Tsholotsho District Hospital for a pregnancy test.
The girl tested positive and after examining her, it was discovered that she was seven months pregnant.
The mother then reported the incident to the police but failed to disclose to the Victim Friendly Unit (VFU) police officer the suspect who could have impregnated her daughter.
The minor was taken to the Department of Social Welfare where she received counselling and was placed at Sanders Johns Centre for safety.
The girl gave birth on 14 November 2022. A police officer interviewed her and she revealed that she was raped by her 14-year-old cousin.
DNA tests were done and confirmed that her 14-year-old cousin had indeed impregnated her leading to his arrest.

Teenager Who Impregnated Tsholotsho Girl (9) Slapped With 3-year Suspended Sentence

The nine-year-old girl from Tsholotsho District who gave birth in November last year was expected to return to school and resume her education when the 2023 first term commenced this week.
Acting Matabeleland North Provincial Social Development Officer Golden Mapanga told the Sunday News that the Government will cater for her fees and other educational requirements.
Mapanga said the girl was returning to an undisclosed school where she would do Grade Four.
The school will not be disclosed as a means of protecting the girl from discrimination. Said Mapanga:

According to the care plan devised by the probation officer, the nine-year-old is returning to school at the beginning of the first term to continue with her education.
It is our mandate and responsibility to administer the Children’s Act so that this child gets all the needs due to her hence she is returning to school.
Case conferencing was done over this matter. When we case conference, we bring together responsible stakeholders who make up what we call a Best Interests Determination Panel.
These people devise a plan of how a particular issue can be dealt with and with the Tsholotsho case this is what happened, the stakeholders met and discussed how to handle the matter.
Alternative care is available for the nine-year-old in the future which is institutional or foster care and as schools open the child will be in alternative care.
The Government is going to pay for her school fees and other needs that are required.
We are trying, by all means, to protect this child and ensure she is not stigmatised hence she will not return to her old school but to a new one at a safe location.

9-year-old Tsholotsho Girl Returns To School

The father of the nine-year-old girl from Tsholotsho who gave birth in November said that he is eager to see his daughter, the one he was accused of impregnating.
Speaking in an interview with The Sunday News on Friday, the 29-year-old man said this would bring closure and peace to his soul.
The man said he does not have the money to travel from Tsholotsho to Bulawayo to the safe house where she is being kept.
After his daughter was taken to a safe house, the minor allegedly told authorities that her father told her that a goblin would come and insert something into her privates.
But the father gave a different version of the goblin issue, saying it was a prophetess who made the claims. He said:
<blockquote>
Our child was ill since October 2020 and she was assisted by a prophetess who was known by my wife who prayed for her.
She had started developing breasts at seven years old and the prophetess said my daughter was being used by a goblin that was having sexual intercourse with her.
My wife and her mother, that is my mother-in-law are the ones who went to visit the prophetess and stayed there for two weeks.

When she returned home, they were informed that the child was not supposed to enter the homestead until the “spell” cast upon her was removed, the man explained.
He said the girl then went to live at her maternal grandparents’ home for a year.
She returned home in November last year and they were informed that she was now menstruating.
The father said the girl’s mother and her maternal grandmother visited yet another healer who said the menstruation could not be stopped.
When her stomach started bulging the parents never panicked as the prophetess had told them that the stomach was “full of dirt” as a result of having sex with the goblin.
The man said the experiences affected her daughter’s performance at school as her grades had dropped. He said:

We were summoned by the school teacher who said my daughter’s grades had dropped dismally and she also prayed for our daughter.
The menstruation stopped and it was assumed the prayers were now effective yet the child was pregnant.
She, however, complained of stomach pains and was taken to the local clinic and eventually to Tsholotsho District Hospital where it was confirmed that she was over six months pregnant and the matter was referred to the police.
At the police station, we were told we had to be questioned individually about what was happening to the child and I assumed it was all in order.
I was not questioned but I was simply handcuffed and accused of raping my daughter and impregnating her.
I was shocked. One police officer scoffed at me and said ngiluthango oluzidlele amakhomane.

The father initially appeared at the Tsholotsho Magistrate Courts to answer to rape charges on 1 September 2022 and was remanded to 15 November.
After his appearance in court, the father said he requested DNA tests to be conducted in a bid to gain his freedom. He said:

They told me it was too expensive and I could not afford it and I told them that was the only way I was going to be exonerated because I did not want to die in prison. I also failed to secure bail during that period.
Around 23 November 2022, I was then informed that I would get a DNA test. I also asked that the four other males who lived with us at home also be tested as they equally had access to my child and that was done.

He was summoned to court on 29 November and the magistrate told him that the State had done their investigations and proved that he was not guilty of rape and impregnating his child as DNA results had come out negative.
However, this verdict was opposed by a prosecutor who said the case must be transferred to the Bulawayo Regional Courts.
Even though the magistrate queried this, the father was still transferred where he was held at Khami Remand Prison.
On 8 December he appeared in court in Bulawayo and was told to return on 15 December. He said:

I went to court and was told that my record was nowhere to be found both in Tsholotsho and Bulawayo courts and should return on 19 December. I lost it.
I was very disturbed and had given up on myself, I assumed I had another new case to answer.
Later, on the same day, I was finally discharged. They told me that I was not guilty of the count of rape and that I was a free man.
I blacked out, I could not believe it, after a moment light shone in my eyes and I could see clearly.
I failed to walk; I was still in leg irons. It was a great relief.

The father was finally released from Khami Prison on Tuesday 20 December.

Father Of "Pregnant 9-yr-old" Speaks About "Goblin"

The father of a 9-year-old Tsholotsho girl who got pregnant and later gave birth last month has finally been freed by the courts <a href="https://cite.org.zw/court-frees-father-of-9-year-old-tsholotsho-girl/">reported CITE</a>.
The girl from Masekesa Village under Chief Gampu was eight years old when she fell pregnant.
Her father was arrested for rape following allegations that he would tell the girl that there were some creatures (goblins) that entered through the window and slept with her.
The girl later gave birth to a baby girl via cesarean section at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) where she was being attended to by specialists.
DNA tests conducted by the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) to ascertain the father of the newly-born baby showed that the father was not responsible for her daughter’s pregnancy.
Instead, DNA results proved that the minor was impregnated by her 13-year-old cousin.
In his ruling, Dzira said the court has no reason to hold him as the recent DNA results from NUST exonerated him. Said Dzira:

The state has decided to set you free since the DNA results from NUST have proven you innocent. The court hereby withdraws the charges laid against you.

Magistrate Frees Father Of 9-year-old Tsholotsho Girl

The nine-year-old girl from Masekesa village in Tsholotsho under Chief Gampu has given birth.
She gave birth to a baby girl on Monday morning via a Caesarean section at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).
The specialist who was managing the girl at UBH Dr Ellen Takaringwa confirmed the birth. She said:
<blockquote>
The baby was born in the early hours of the morning. Both the baby and mother are fine. We are monitoring the mother as she is in the first crucial hours. The baby was 3 090g and it’s a girl.
</blockquote>
Acting clinical director of the hospital Dr Harrison Rambanapasi said that both the girl and the baby were in stable condition. Said Dr Rambanapasi:
<blockquote>
I wish to inform the nation that our nine-year-old has given birth at UBH. Our specialists performed the C-section in the early hours of today, Monday the 14th.
The outcome is a healthy baby girl with a weight just above 3kg. Both the mother and the baby are in a stable condition.
Once again I would like to thank the team looking after this patient for their hard work and professional conduct throughout.
The pressure was very high as everyone wanted to see the patient but the specialists focused on the needs of the patient and made sure that her right to privacy was protected and upheld.
Even when her Excellency, the First Lady came to see our patient she also emphasised the need to protect this unfortunate girl from the negative repercussions of publicity.

According to the mother of the nine-year-old, she started menstruating at about seven years.
She then took her to their local clinic in Tsholotsho where she was told it was common owing to the type of food being consumed in the 21st century.
The family then took her to a faith healer who prayed for the girl and the menstruation stopped.
However, her stomach started growing and the mother only sought medical help later and it was discovered the child was over seven months pregnant.
She was initially managed at Mpilo Central Hospital and later transferred to UBH at 32 weeks.
The father of the minor was arrested on 29 August 2022 when it was discovered that she was pregnant.
The girl revealed that her father told her that a goblin would come at night and insert things into her privates.
