<p>The Ministry of Health and Child Care has released the weekly disease report for the week ending on 12 January 2024.</p>
<p>The report highlights a total of 639 malaria cases and one death in Guruve. Notably, 10.3% of these cases involved children under five years old. The provinces with the highest number of cases were Manicaland with 354 and Mashonaland Central with 117. The cumulative figures now stand at 1,138 cases and four deaths.</p>
<p>This week, one suspected typhoid case was reported, with no deaths. The cumulative figures for typhoid are one suspected case, no deaths, and a case fatality rate (CFR) of 0%.</p>
<p>A total of 26 suspected cholera cases and one suspected death were reported this week. The suspected death occurred in Harare Province’s southern districts. Out of the suspected cases, 25 were from Mazowe District, and one was from Harare’s Southern District.</p>
<p>The cumulative figures for cholera are 72 suspected cases, one suspected death, and no confirmed deaths, with a cumulative CFR of 1.4%. All provinces and cities are expected to strengthen their Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) on surveillance, infection prevention and control (IPC), and case management.</p>
<p>This week also saw 188 dysentery cases with no deaths reported. The provinces with the highest number of clinical dysentery cases were Mashonaland Central with 96 and Mashonaland West with 92. The cumulative figures for dysentery are 934 cases and no deaths.</p>
<p>New anthrax cases were recorded, with three cases in Gokwe North District, two in Sanyati District, and two in Mwenezi District, bringing the cumulative figures to 12 cases and no deaths.</p>
<p>Furthermore, there were 6,506 common diarrhoea cases reported this week, resulting in seven deaths. The deaths were reported from Sally Mugabe Hospital (6) and Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals (1) in Harare Metropolitan Province.</p>

The Ministry of Health in Zimbabwe released a report on diseases. There were 639 malaria cases, with one death, most in Manicaland and Mashonaland Central. One typhoid case was reported with no deaths, and 26 cholera cases with one death. 188 cases of dysentery were reported with no deaths. New anthrax cases were recorded in various districts. Additionally, there were 6,506 cases of common diarrhoea with seven deaths in Harare Metropolitan Province. Health authorities are working to strengthen response teams for surveillance and prevention of these diseases.

Zimbabwe Health Update: Latest Figures on Malaria, Typhoid, Cholera, and Anthrax

<p>Typhoid has killed 9 people so far in 2019. 4,860 suspected cases where reported.</p>
<p>Said a March report by the Ministry of Health and Child Care:</p>
<blockquote><p>“Thirty-two cases were reported from South West district, 14 from Southern district, one from Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, all in Harare Province and one at Mpilo Central Hospital.</p>
<p>This brings the total number of typhoid cases so far this year to 4 860 suspected cases, 165 confirmed cases and nine (9) deaths,”</p></blockquote>
<p>The government has started Zimbabwe’s first typhoid vaccination programme which is targeting 325 000 people in nine selected high-density and typhoid-burdened suburbs in Harare, such as Mbare. Mobile health workers travel in residential areas encouraging people to be vaccinated.</p>

Typhoid Has Killed 9 So Far In 2019

<p>Harare City Council’s <span> director for health services, Dr Prosper Chonzi said there are 17 confirmed cases of typhoid at Matapi Flats in Mbare and authorities have since set up a 24-hour clinic to manage patients. </span></p>
<h2><strong>Here’s what we know so far about the outbreak:</strong></h2>
<ul>
<li><span>12 patients have since been transferred to Beatrice Road Infectious Diseases Hospitals (BRIDH)</span></li>
<li>So far the 17 cases have been reported in Mbare only.</li>
<li>So far there are no deaths</li>
<li>Harare City Council is <span>considering introducing vaccines which are already being given to council workers working at council’s sewerage treatment works, to high-risk areas. </span></li>
<li><span>It is suspected that the recent typhoid outbreak could have been caused by poor water sanitation and overpopulation.</span></li>

<h2>Symptoms of Typhoid:</h2>
<h2>Early illness</h2>
<p>Once signs and symptoms do appear, you’re likely to experience:</p>
<ul>
<li>Fever that starts low and increases daily, possibly reaching as high as 104.9 F (40.5 C)</li>
<li>Headache</li>
<li>Weakness and fatigue</li>
<li>Muscle aches</li>
<li>Sweating</li>
<li>Dry cough</li>
<li>Loss of appetite and weight loss</li>
<li>Abdominal pain</li>
<li>Diarrhea or constipation</li>
<li>Rash</li>
<li>Extremely swollen abdomen<br/>
<h3>Later illness</h3>
</li>
<li>If you don’t receive treatment, you may:</li>
<li>Lie motionless and exhausted with your eyes half-closed in what’s known as the typhoid state</li>
<li>Become delirious</li>
</ul>
<h2><strong>Here’s how you can stay safe:</strong></h2>

<h3>Vaccines:</h3>
<ul>
<li>There are two types of vaccines:</li>
<li><span>ViCPS </span> is injected. <span>This is given to children of at least 2 years of age and requires a booster every 2 years.</span></li>
<li><span>Ty21a is taken orally every other day until 4 doses have been received. Children need to be at least 6 years of age to receive this vaccine and then require boosters every five years.</span></li>
</ul>
<h2>Preventing infecting yourself</h2>
<ul>
<li>Wash hands frequently in hot, soapy water before eating or preparing food, as well as after using the toilet. Alcohol-based sanitizer can be used in the absence of hot water.</li>
<li>Avoid drinking contaminated water by ensuring water is bottled or boiled. Carbonated bottled water is safer to drink than uncarbonated.</li>
<li>Wash teeth using bottled water and avoid swallowing shower water.</li>
<li>Avoid ordering drinks with ice, unless you know the ice is made form boiled or bottled water. Also avoid flavored ices that could have been made with water that is contaminated.</li>
<li>Only eat foods that have been thoroughly cooked and served steaming hot and avoid foods that have been stored or served at room temperature.</li>
<li>Only eat raw vegetables if they can be peeled. Items such as lettuce are particularly at risk of contamination and are very difficult to clean properly.</li>
<li>Avoid food and drink being sold by street vendors as it is difficult to keep food clean in the street.</li>
</ul>
<h2>Preventing infecting others</h2>
<p>If a person is recovering from infection with typhoid fever, they can take the following measures to prevent infecting others:</p>
<ul>
<li>Follow the doctor’s instructions for taking antibiotics and be sure to complete the whole course.</li>
<li>Avoid preparing food for others until it is confirmed that you are no longer contagious. It will not be possible to return to a job in the food service industry until tests have confirmed there is no risk of you passing typhoid bacteria.</li>
<li>Frequently wash hands using hot, soapy water before preparing or eating food, as well as after using the toilet. Hands should be scrubbed thoroughly for at least 30 seconds.</li>
</ul>


Here's what you need about the Typhoid Outbreak in Harare and how to stay safe

<p>A surveillance report by the Ministry of Health and Child Care indicates that by June 15, a total of 2 526 suspected typhoid cases, 116 confirmed cases and 10 deaths had been reported countrywide.</p>
<p>A weekly surveillance report ending June 4 shows that 16 new cases were reported with Harare registering the highest with 14 cases, Bindura District in Mashonaland Central Province reported one case, while Murehwa District in Mashonaland East Province reported a single case as well. A total of 2 371 suspected cases of typhoid fever, 78 confirmed cases and six deaths have been recorded countrywide between January 1 and June 4, 2017.</p>

116 typhoid cases reported, 10 dead

<p>The typhoid outbreak has spread to Glen View and Budiriro suburbs after  2 cases were reported in each suburb.  The outbreak started in Mbare where a someone died from the disease.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/Harare_City_Council" target="_blank">Harare City Council</a> Health Services director Dr Prosper Chonzi also confirmed that suspected typhoid costs rose from 132 to 150.  Chonzi is fearful that more cases will be recorded as the city is yet to <a href="http://www.pindula.co.zw/news/2017/01/13/residents-accuse-city-harare-focusing-trivial-issues-instead-addressing-causes-typhoid/" target="_blank">address the major causes</a>.  Chonzi said:</p>
<blockquote><p>We fear for further typhoid outbreaks as the drivers of the disease are still to be dealt with.</p>
<p>We are expecting more results as there are specimens which are still in the laboratory.</p></blockquote>
