United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday, 26 January announced the appointment of Zimbabwean national, Raisedon Zenenga, as his new Deputy Special Representative in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).
According to a statement issued by the United Nations, Zenenga succeeds Ghanaian nation Anita Kiki Gbeho. <a href="https://press.un.org/en/2024/sga2261.doc.htm">Reads the statement</a>:

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Raisedon Zenenga of Zimbabwe as his new Deputy Special Representative in the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).
Mr. Zenenga succeeds Anita Kiki Gbeho of Ghana, to whom the Secretary-General is grateful for her dedicated service in Somalia.
Currently serving as Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Libya, where he also served as Assistant Secretary-General and Mission Coordinator of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) since 2020, Mr. Zenenga brings extensive experience in supporting political processes and mediation, managing complex peace operations, and working with Government and other key stakeholders in conflict and post-conflict settings.
He has over 30 years of experience in the United Nations, including with United Nations missions in Liberia, Libya, Iraq-Kuwait, Sierra Leone, Somalia and South Sudan, as well as at the United Nations Headquarters.
He previously held the positions of Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Somalia and Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
He also served in other senior roles at the United Nations Headquarters supporting peacekeeping operations in Africa. Mr. Zenenga began his professional career in his country’s Diplomatic Service.
Mr. Zenenga graduated from the University of Zimbabwe, where he studied public administration and political science.

Zimbabwean National, Raisedon Zenenga, Appointed To United Nations Post

Zimbabwean lawyer Thompson Chengeta has been appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres to his 15-member Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (ABDM).
ABDM was established in 1978 and its functions include advising the Secretary-General on matters within the area of arms limitation and disarmament, including on studies and research under the auspices of the United Nations or institutions within the United Nations system.
Chengeta’s appointment was confirmed in a letter dated 07 December 2023, addressed to the Zimbabwean by Guterres. He wrote:

I have the honour to invite you to become a member of my Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters, as of January 2024.
Your experience and knowledge will enhance the work of the Board, both in its advisory capacity on disarmament issues and in its role as the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR).
A description of the functions of the Advisory Board and its role as the Board of Trustees of UNIDIR is contained in the annex to this letter.
The next session of the Board will take place from 30 January to 2 February 2024 in Geneva. I do hope that you will be able to accept this invitation.

Posting on social media site X (formerly Twitter), Chengeta welcomed the appointment to the ABDM, describing it as an honour. <a href="https://x.com/DrThompsonLaw/status/1734517074024612135?s=20">He wrote</a>:

Chengeta studied law at Harvard Law School, the University of Pretoria (UP) and Midlands State University (MSU).
He is a Fellow at the South African Research Chair in International Law, University of Johannesburg (UJ), an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at MSU and a Non-Resident Fellow at the Institute of International and Comparative Law in Africa, UP.
Previously, Chengeta has worked on the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on extra-judicial killings and has experience with the OHCHR and the International Criminal Court.

Zimbabwean Lawyer Thompson Chengeta Appointed To UN Disarmament Advisory Board

The Government of Zimbabwe has donated 4 400 metric tonnes of maize grain to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to meet the food needs of refugees living at Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Simon Masanga said:
<blockquote>
We have international obligations so we have agreed at the international level to host refugees in this country.
As the President said, no one should ever die of hunger in this country, it also includes 16 000 refugees at Tongogara.
I want to put it on record that the government remains committed to improving the welfare of refugees at Tongogara.

According to <a href="https://zbcnews.co.zw/2023/06/19/govt-donates-maize-to-world-food-programme/">ZBC News</a>, the partnership, WFP will cover the costs of transport, storage, handling, milling and fortification of the maize.
The WFP Representative and Country Director in Zimbabwe, Francesca Erdelmann said:

We are together to formalise the government’s donation to the United Nations World Food Programme of 4 400 Metric tonnes of maize grain for refugees living in Tongogara Refugee Camp in Chipinge.
WFP thanks the Government of Zimbabwe for this contribution which offers an important lifeline to this vulnerable population.
Around the world, refugees are living further away from home, more than ever before, so we are heartened to see that countries like Zimbabwe are putting forward solutions and working to ensure that refugees have a better life.
Thanks to the maize contribution from the Government of Zimbabwe, refugees will receive monthly transfers of micronutrient-fortified maize meal complemented with cash, aiming to meet their daily nutrition requirements.
The in-kind maize contribution will be twinned with WFP funds to cover the cost of transport, storage, handling, milling and distribution.
The first batch of some 2 170 MTs will be uplifted in the upcoming weeks.

Tongogara Refugee Camp was established in 1984. It was named after <a href="https://pindula.co.zw/Josiah_Tongogara">Josiah Tongogara</a>, a former commander of the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army who died shortly before Zimbabwe gained independence in 1980.
The camp was initially set up to accommodate refugees fleeing the civil war in Mozambique, but it has since also taken in refugees from other countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, and Somalia.
At its peak in the mid-2000s, the camp was home to over 20,000 refugees, but the numbers have since decreased due to repatriation, resettlement, and voluntary return programs.
The camp is managed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in partnership with the government of Zimbabwe and various humanitarian organizations.

Zimbabwe Donates Maize To World Food Programme

The United Nations intends to mobilise US$2.8 billion by 2026 for various developmental programmes in Zimbabwe.
A High-Level Joint Steering Committee meeting of the Zimbabwe UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (ZUNSDCF) was held last week.
<a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/un-to-mobilise-us28-billion-for-zim/">The Sunday News</a> reported that the meeting also reviewed the progress made under the ZUNSDCF in 2022 and agreed on priority areas to be focused on this year.
A statement that was released after the meeting read in part:
<blockquote>
The ZUNSDCF with a five-year programme cycle until 2026 and fully aligned to the National Development Strategy 1, has a development finance portfolio of US$2.8 billion to be mobilised in support of national development priorities and Sustainable Development Goals.
The priority areas for 2023 include creating an enabling environment that promotes human development, climate resilience, natural resources management and sustainable food systems, and economic transformation, equitable and inclusive growth.
</blockquote>
Other areas include addressing structural challenges related to poverty, exclusion, corruption, discrimination, adherence to the rule of law and violation of human rights.
In 2022, the ZUNSDCF spent US$524 million on various projects and programmes targeting populations that included persons with disabilities, migrants and refugees, children, youths and rural farmers, among others.

United Nations Intends To Mobilise US$2.8 Billion For Zimbabwe

The global population reached 8 billion on 15 November 2022, with India projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.
In a statement issued prior to the milestone, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said:

This year’s World Population Day falls during a milestone year when we anticipate the birth of the Earth’s eight billionth inhabitant.
This is an occasion to celebrate our diversity, recognize our common humanity, and marvel at advancements in health that have extended lifespans and dramatically reduced maternal and child mortality rates.
At the same time, it is a reminder of our shared responsibility to care for our planet and a moment to reflect on where we still fall short of our commitments to one another.
</blockquote>
<a href="https://www.un.org/en/desa/world-population-reach-8-billion-15-november-2022">According to the United Nations</a>, the global population is growing at its slowest rate since 1950, having fallen under 1 per cent in 2020.
The latest projections by the United Nations suggest that the world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050.
It is projected to reach a peak of around 10.4 billion people during the 2080s and to remain at that level until 2100.
More than half of the projected increase in the global population up to 2050 will be concentrated in eight countries: the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and the United Republic of Tanzania, said the United Nations.
Countries of sub-Saharan Africa are expected to contribute more than half of the increase anticipated through 2050.

World Population Reaches 8 Billion

A United Nations official on Tuesday indirectly rejected claims by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa that he was in talks with the UN to supervise Zimbabwe’s general elections next year to ensure transparency and fairness.
Chamisa, who rejected the outcome of the 2018 presidential election, citing rigging allegations, has in recent weeks claimed the CCC was arranging UN supervision of the 2023 harmonised elections.
He made the latest claim at his party’s “Thank You” rally in Chinhoyi on Sunday.
UN Resident and Humanitarian Co-ordinator for Zimbabwe, Edward Kallon, told <a href="https://newziana.co.zw/2022/09/13/un-rubbishes-chamisa-claims/">New Ziana</a> that the UN required a mandate from either the General Assembly or its Security Council to supervise elections in a member country.
He said the UN last supervised an election in 1989 in Namibia when the country gained independence. Said Kallon:

UN electoral supervision requires a mandate from the General Assembly or the Security Council.
It has been undertaken in the context of decolonization, and at the request of the relevant government.
The most recently UN supervised elections were in Namibia in 1989 in a peculiar context.

Kallon said technical assistance was now the most common type of support given to member states by the UN. He said:

The United Nations provides different types of electoral assistance. Technical assistance is the most common form of support provided to Member States.
In Zimbabwe, UNDP has been providing support to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission since 2016, through the ZIM-ECO (ZEC capacity-building) project, which provides technical support to the electoral process in Zimbabwe.

UN Official Rejects Chamisa Claims

<blockquote>HIGHLIGHTS
• The death toll has risen to 172 people and 327 are still missing, according to government reports.
• About 270,000 people have been affected by flooding and landslides.
• Nearly 4,500 people are displaced and at least 16,000 families are in need of shelter assistance.
• The majority of health care facilities in Chimanimani district are inaccessible.
SITUATION OVERVIEW
At least 172 deaths have been reported and 327 people are reportedly missing in Zimbabwe following flooding caused by Tropical Cyclone Idai’s trajectory, according to the Ministry for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting. The death toll is expected to rise as areas previously cut-off become reachable by road and the full extent of the damage becomes known.
Humanitarian partners estimate that 270,000 people were affected by flooding and landslides, when local rivers and their tributaries burst their banks, inundating homes and schools and causing considerable damage to property and livelihoods.
Out of the 270,000 affected people, nearly 240,000 are in Chimanimani and Chipinge districts. 
Nearly 4,500 people are displaced, according to the Government. About 16,000 households are in need of shelter assistance in Chimanimani (8,000 households), Chipinge (3,000 households), Buhera (1,000 households) and Mutare (4,000 households). A temporary camp has been established at Skyline, and two additional temporary camps will be established at Wengezi and Ngangu.
The displaced people in Chimanimani are currently sheltering at Ngangu primary and secondary schools, Chimanimani Hotel and Ngangu clinic.
According to a rapid assessment conducted on 18 and 19 March, the majority of health care facilities in Chimanimani district were inaccessible, including the district hospital Mutambara Mission and access to the provincial hospital is limited due major destruction of roads and bridges. Facilities of Chipinge district are all accessible.
Disruption of essential health, HIV prevention, treatment, care and support, food and other social services may lead to increased vulnerability of people living with HIV: inability to adhere to treatment; risk of malnutrition, opportunistic infections and disease outbreaks; leading to poor health and in some cases mortality.
An HIV rapid assessment is planned to better understand the actual impact of the cyclone on HIV programs, people living with HIV and AIDS-affected households.
The flooding compromised access to safe water, basic sanitation and hygiene practices in both rural and urban areas, which is increasing the risk of water-borne diseases. The country is facing an outbreak of cholera and typhoid since September 2018.
RESPONSE
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has received a €250,000 contribution (US$284,414) from the European Union, which will help support the deployment of a UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) helicopter from 25 March that will work to deliver much-needed assistance (medicine, shelter equipment, food and nutrition assistance) and transport of personnel to the areas of Chimanimani and Chipinge, the two most-affected districts.
On 26 March, the helicopter was loaded with food and non-food items – including jerry cans, latrines, plastic sheeting and water purification tablets – and deployed to assess previously unreached locations.
For the next three weeks, the helicopter will do five rotations per day into the most affected areas in Chipinge and Chimanimani. It can carry three metric tons or 19 people.
To date, IOM has distributed 1,000 tarpaulins and 200 non-food items kits for Manicaland (Tanganda, Chipinge and Chimanimani) for initial response.
The Government has arranged a storage facility at Silverstream that humanitarian partners can use for emergency response purposes.
Access remains a challenge in the districts of Mutare, Chimanimani and Chimanimani, with large trucks not able to transit in some roads. In Chimanimani, a makeshift bridge has been constructed to access Copa and Chimanimani town from Chipinge, but is only accessible using 4×4 vehicles.</blockquote>

A United Nations report shows that Zimbabwe was better off under former President Robert Mugabe than under his predecessor, current leader President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
The UN World Happiness Report 2019 ranks Zimbabwe as the 146th happiest country out of 156 nations. Zimbabwe dropped two places from number 144 the previous year.
In an interview with Newsday, Labour and Economic Development Research Institute of Zimbabwe director Godfrey Kanyenze had this to say:
<blockquote>It is not unexpected. If you compare where we are now with where we were last year, certainly last year we were in a better place. Certainly, last year, we did not have the fuel queues, last year expectations were much higher than they are now.
The longer we go, the more disappointed we are now because it is a crisis of expectations. After the elections, people are expecting results, for the economy to begin to pick up and the government to address the challenges affecting us.</blockquote>
The UN looked at six key variables when compiling the report over a period stretching from 2005-2018.
These variables are GDP per capita, social support, life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and absence of corruption, according to the World Happiness Report 2019.
