Global online rental company Airbnb has appointed Zimbabwean Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/James_Manyika/">James Manyika</a> to its board, recognising his expertise in AI and its impact on society.
Manyika, currently a senior vice president at Google, holds two master’s degrees and a PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics from the University of Zimbabwe and Oxford University. Airbnb confirmed his appointment, with CEO Brian Chesky stating that Manyika had been advising the company since 2018. Chesky said in a statement:

He’s dedicated his career to exploring technology’s impact on society, and is one of the world’s leading experts in AI. He started advising Airbnb in 2018 and has been an essential thought partner to me for years.

On his appointment, Manyika, who will also chair the Board’s stakeholder committee, expressed his inspiration by Airbnb’s ability to bring people and cultures together globally. He said:

Prior to joining Google, he had an extensive career at McKinsey spanning nearly three decades. At McKinsey, Manyika led the distinguished McKinsey Global Institute’s research on technology, the economy, and major global trends. He was also involved in researching global economic and technology trends and provided strategic guidance to leading high-tech companies on growth and innovation.
Manyika’s involvement extends beyond his work at Google and McKinsey. He serves on the board of the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University and is an advisor on various advisory boards at prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford, MIT, the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and Stanford University.

Airbnb Appoints Zimbabwean AI Expert James Manyika To Its Board

A government survey has established that only 1% of students seeking to be enrolled in Zimbabwe’s medical schools get placed due to an acute shortage of training facilities, resulting in limited access to such training programmes.
This emerged during a workshop organised by Zimbabwe’s <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Ministry_of_Health_and_Child_Care">Ministry of Health and Child Care</a> titled the ‘Health Labour Market Analysis to Inform Health Workforce Strategic Planning and a Sustainable Health Workforce’ held on 7 February.
Reads in part the survey report tabled at the workshop:

With 397,185 applicants [queuing] for admission in the 2021 academic year, only 4,134 of the prospective health professions students were offered places – 1% of applicants got places to train.
There were an average of 89 applicants competing for every available seat for admission in 2021 – highly competitive. There is a capacity to train 4,476 health workers per year (theoretical capacity). Of the capacity, the production has been 3,334 per year (75% of the theoretical capacity).

The report said there is an average course completion rate of 80.6% for health or medical-related courses and a dropout rate of 19.4%. A total of 90% of those who complete their training obtain their professional qualifications and licences to practise.
The report also said 700 to 800 nurses are trained per year as well as 200 to 220 doctors, 90 to 110 pharmacists per year and between 27 and 31 laboratory scientists each year.
It said 34% of the registered trained health workers are not active and they have mostly emigrated, retired or changed jobs, <a href="https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20230208112719437">University World News</a> reported.
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Council_for_Higher_Education">Zimbabwe Council of Higher Education (ZIMCHE)</a> chief director of health and life sciences, Professor Felicity Gumbo, said some of the qualifications obtained outside Zimbabwe do not match local standards, hence students end up stranded or spend up to two years writing local examinations to be able to use their degrees.
The reasons why some foreign qualifications are not recognised in Zimbabwe include that they lack practical training through internships and other work-based learning.
The report also said that there has been a growth in the number of doctors, nurses and midwives.
It was recommended that the private sector should be engaged to optimise expanded contributions to training and employment.
It was also recommended that there should be a collaboration between the ministry of higher and tertiary education to align training plans with the ministry of health in line with the projected needs based on disease burden.

"Only 1% Of Students Seeking Enrolment In Zimbabwe’s Medical Schools Get Placed" - Survey

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has introduced new degree certificates and transcripts in line with Government’s heritage-based education 5.0.
The updated degree certificates and transcripts, which comply with the highest international certification standards and practices, are effective from December 1, 2022.
In a statement, the university said the introduction of new degree certificates and transcripts is consistent with the ongoing institutional transformation, as guided by the Government’s heritage-based education 5.0 curriculum. The University said:

 The new degree certificates and transcripts have improved modern security features in line with best international certification standards and practice.
Our esteemed partners and stakeholders are, therefore, advised that the university is no longer processing old degree certificates and transcripts. Old certificates and transcripts remain valid as issued.
Both new and old degree certificates and transcripts are readily verifiable by the university through the office of the Deputy Registrar, Academics. All the graduates from the class of 2022 are expected to have collected their degree certificates through their respective faculties.

The university said inquiries regarding degree certificates and transcripts should be directed to the Deputy Registrar and academics, through their email address or telephone numbers.
UZ Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Mapfumo recently attributed the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/university-of-zimbabwe-has-a-backlog-of-academic-certificates/">certificate backlog</a> to the transition from the old to the new certificate.
Graduates had expressed frustration over the institution’s failure to give them their academic certificates over a year after graduating.

University Of Zimbabwe Introduces New Degree Certificates And Transcripts

Power went off during an examination at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in the Great Hall.
UZ acting registrar Munyaradzi Madambe Thursday confirmed the development adding that there was darkness for a brief moment, according to NewsDay. He said:

We had a series of power outages on December 6, 2022. It’s unfortunate that someone decided to be mischievous by taking that picture during the 30 seconds transition from Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) electricity to generator power. All our venues have backup power. It is also important to note that we have a dedicated ZESA power grid, so we hardly have power cuts, unless there is a fault, of which Zesa would always expeditiously attend to.

Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) secretary-general Joseph Nyamayaro refuted Madambi’s claims saying there was darkness for about 15 minutes during the examination. He is quoted by NewsDay as saying:

The UZ is taking students for granted. However, it is the State that is actually disrespecting students because it is a shame that its higher education institutions have increased fees, but cannot provide simple things like generators for students during examinations.
To say the blackout during the examination happened for a few seconds is mere propaganda. One cannot take a picture of a blackout in seconds. Even if electricity was later restored, they cannot restore the damage that students experienced. During an examination, the mind and body should be in sync. This rot in electricity and water service delivery has severely affected students.

Power Goes Off During UZ Exam

A provincial police intelligence officer has appeared before the courts accused of <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/provincial-intelligence-officer-back-in-court-over-leaked-uz-law-exam-paper/">leaking the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) law degree examination paper.</a>
Superintendent Vigai Maunganidze was granted $50 000 bail when he appeared before deputy chief magistrate Tranos Utawashe.
Maunganidze was told not to interfere with State witnesses and not to use the cellphone line that he allegedly used to send the examination paper.
ZACC investigating officer Tafadzwa Chivavarika opposed bail in vain saying Maunganidze had shown the capacity to interfere with investigations after he allegedly phoned a witness, Farai Madombi, to delete the examination paper which he had sent via WhatsApp from his mobile phone.
Madombi was identified as a member of the Defence ministry.
Prosecutor Ephraim Zinyandu was in support of the ZACC officer in denying the accused bail.
But Maunganidze’s lawyer told the court that the ZACC investigating officer had failed to submit evidence of the leaked examination paper.
She said the document submitted in court as an exhibit was different from the one in Madombi’s phone. 
<h2>What happened:</h2>
It is alleged that on October 31 2022, Maunganidze obtained a UZ Faculty of Law examination paper on Administrative Local Government Law for 2nd-year students. It was supposed to be written on November 3.
Maunganidze, who was one of the students, shared the leaked paper via WhatsApp with Madombi, who was a third-year Bachelor of Substantive Laws student at UZ.
On November 1, Madombi sat for the Company Law examination at UZ, where some students were caught cheating and were disqualified. 
After the examination, ZANU PF director of information Tafadzwa Mugwadi, Madombi’s classmate, approached the accused and discussed the exam paper they had written. 
Mugwadi complained about the examination paper leakage and said he would raise a complaint with the Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development minister.
Madombi allegedly shared the leaked Administrative and Local Government Law exam paper with Mugwadi via WhatsApp.
Mugwadi immediately notified UZ authorities who confirmed the paper as the one that was to be written by 2nd-year Bachelor of Substantive Laws students on November 3, 2022. 
The University then issued a notice to cancel the exam. 
The State alleges that Maunganidze unlawfully obtained and intentionally leaked the examination paper, adding that his actions dented the credibility of UZ.
He was arrested by Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) officers on Friday last week.

Update On Case Of Provincial Police Intelligence Officer Who Leaked UZ Law Exam Paper

A student at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/University_of_Zimbabwe">University of Zimbabwe</a> has taken her father to court demanding $307 560 in maintenance, according to H-Metro.
Diana Banda said she could not access her results because her father, Peter Bada, hasn’t paid her tuition fees. She said:
<blockquote>
I want him to top up my fees, Your Worship, so that I can access my results and move forward.
l don’t even know if l passed or not.
I am tired of reminding him every time and the deadline is close by. We were to be given a 12 percent discount if fees were paid on time, but he told me that he wanted to cater for my sister first.
</blockquote>
Peter denied the claims and said she never said anything about the top-up and never showed him proof of payment. He told the court:
<blockquote>
It’s our second time in this court.
 I never refused to pay fees for her, she is my daughter and I want her to prosper as well.
She never showed me any proof of payment or school invoice, but she claims to be communicating with me.
</blockquote>
Presiding magistrate Ayanda Dhlamini ordered Peter to pay $307 560 before the end of the month.

UZ Student Approaches The Court To Force Her Father To Pay Fees

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Great_Zimbabwe_University">Great Zimbabwe University (GZU)</a> has lost 50 members of staff through a brain drain since January this year.
GZU vice-chancellor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Rungano_Zvobgo">Rungano Zvobgo</a> said the mass staff exodus was affecting the successful implementation of the Education 5.0 policy, NewsDay reported. Zvobgo said at the institution’s graduation ceremony recently:

This year alone, we lost 50 members of staff through resignations, five of them were PhD holders. This has negatively impacted our critical mass of specialised human resources.
</blockquote>
The trend is said to be common amongst state institutions as educators, and non-academic staff, are leaving the country in search of greener pastures.
The president of the Association of University Teachers of UZ, Zvakanyorwa Wilbert Sadomba and secretary-general Rekopantswe Mate wrote to UZ vice-chancellor Paul Mapfumo in July complaining over poor salaries and working conditions. The union leaders said in a memo:

Your non-consultative and non-participatory approach to administration has caused an unprecedented decline in morale leading to an exodus of experts in vital fields such as medicine.

College Lecturers Association of Zimbabwe president David Dzatsunga said lecturers at State institutions have turned destitute. Dzatsunga said:

Quite a number of lecturers are leaving for the diaspora especially because of the low salaries and poor conditions of service incomparable with counterparts in the region and internationally.

Workers in state-owned higher learning institutions are among several groups of workers who have periodically embarked on industrial action in recent years.

Great Zimbabwe University Lecturers Resign En Masse

A High Court judge Thursday postponed a case in which University of Zimbabwe (UZ) students are seeking an order compelling the higher learning institution to reverse its steep fee increase.
The UZ Students Representative Council (SRC) approached the High Court challenging a staggering 1 000% fee hike in September.
Under the new fee structure, undergraduate students have to pay as much as $500 000 and a million for masters studies per semester.
NewsDay reported that High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi postponed the matter to November 24 saying he needed more time to come up with a ruling. Chitapi said:
<blockquote>
It’s a case of bringing the vice-chancellor and the minister who made the suggestion together and hear the reasons for the increase in fees, so as to know whether it’s deemed as a necessary measure, knowing how the decision came about will shed more light on how to go about this case, hence hearing is set for November 24.
</blockquote>
According to the students’ lawyer Tendai Biti, the fee hike was unjustified. Argued the students:
<blockquote>
Consultations were done the wrong way as just one member of the SRC was requested to attend the meeting when by right other members of the council were supposed to be present there.
By right the process of fees hiking should have been done the right way and that involves consultations with the students’ council, the finance committee and the financial council. All of these mentioned parties were not involved in this unlawful act.
</blockquote>
The September fees hike triggered protests and some students were arrested after police stormed the UZ main campus.
Other<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/msu-hikes-tuition-fee-by-more-than-400/"> state universities also raised their fees</a> citing the inflationary economy under which they operate.

Update On University Of Zimbabwe Fee Hike Case

The government says fees at local tertiary institutions were lower compared to their regional counterparts, despite the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/state-universities-raise-fees-uz-introduces-discounts/">recent tuition fee hike by over 450%.</a>
Leader of government business in Parliament and Justice Minister, Ziyambi Ziyambi, Wednesday told legislators that the hike was justifiable considering that tertiary education fees had not been increased for almost two years when inflation was rising.
Ziyambi was responding to Magwegwe MP, Anele Ndebele who had raised concern about the increase of tuition fees by institutions, about a fortnight ago.
Ndebele asked:
<blockquote>
State university fees have gone up 450% with the ministry’s approval, which is really insensitive. I want to check with the leader of government business if there is a deliberate policy thrust by our government to cushion the majority poor, who cannot afford to finance higher education because it must not be a preserve for the rich?
</blockquote>
In response, Ziyambi said:
<blockquote>
 State university fees have not been increased for over one and half years. Honourable Members are quite alive that a lot has happened within that particular period.
If you compare when the fees were pegged at the current structure that has been reviewed and the cost of living that was there including salaries, you will realise that there was a need for a review to be done.
When you compare the fees with what is obtaining in the region, we are the cheapest. Be that as it may, our State universities have come up with programmes to ensure that our students are cushioned in terms of having payment plans, access to loans and other support services that can be given.

When President Mnangagwa made similar remarks about a fortnight ago, critics said the government must not compare fees with those of institutions in the region considering that there is a huge variance between salaries of local workers compared to their colleagues in the region.

Govt Says Fees In Local Tertiary Institutions Are The Cheapest In The Region

State universities in the country have raised their tuition fees for the August to December 2022 semester citing the need to cover operational costs.
Lupane State University (LSU) released its new fee structure effective 1 August 2022 with the fees ranging from $179 000 to a high of $472 500. Read a notice to students:

The fees as contained in the LSU Fees Ordinance Number 1 of 2022 effective from 1 August 2022 to 31 December 2022. The fees are charged per semester. Students are required to pay 60 percent fees and register.

<h2>Fees per Faculty:</h2>
<blockquote>
1). Faculties of Agricultural Sciences and Engineering and Applied Sciences – $285 000 per semester 
2). Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences – $279 750 
3). Diplomas – $298 000.
4). Faculty of Commerce – $179 750 for this semester
5). Post-graduate degree students – $472 500.
6). Students in conventional programmes – $100 000 for accommodation 
7). Students on block release – $40 000 before residence allocation.

LSU director of marketing and public relations Mr Zwelithini Dlamini said they had adjusted levies and not tuition fees, according to <a href="https://www.sundaynews.co.zw/universities-adjust-fees-structures/">Sunday News</a>.
The University of Zimbabwe has, however, proposed that students who are unable to pay tuition fees must be enrolled in a work-study programme that caters for students unable to cover the costs. 
UZ also introduced payment plans to ensure that students can pay their fees in a convenient and flexible manner.
Discounts for tuition fees have also been introduced at UZ with those that pay 100 percent of fees enjoying a 12.5 percent discount, those that pay 75 percent will enjoy a 10 percent discount while those that are able to pay 50 percent will get a five percent discount, only if all these payments are made by 31 October. 
They, however, maintained that no student was going to miss out on learning time or fail to write examinations due to non-payment of tuition.
The National University of Science and Technology (NUST) has requested that students pay between $270 420 and $284 700 for undergraduate degrees while post-graduate degree programmes will see students parting with between $360 000 and $714 000 per semester. The university also announced that students can make payment plans to clear their fees with a requirement of 60 percent of total fees being paid in order for them to register.

State Universities Raise Fees, UZ Introduces Discounts

Some students at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) have taken the higher learning institution and its vice-chancellor Paul Mapfumo to court challenging the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/watch-uz-students-protest-demanding-fees-must-fall/">recent increase in tuition fees.</a>
The university recently<a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/watch-uz-students-protest-demanding-fees-must-fall/"> increased fees</a>, with students expected to pay a minimum of US$509 for undergraduate fees per semester triggering protests at the institution which resulted in 19 students being arrested last week.
In an urgent chamber application filed at the High Court, Narshon Kohlo, Paidamoyo Mafusire and Ethel Museswa cited Mapfumo and the UZ as respondents.
The students, represented by Tendai Biti, are seeking an application for review to challenge the respondent’s decision to increase fees. Reads the application seen by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200000714/uz-taken-to-court-by-students-over-fees">NewsDay Zimbabwe</a>:
<blockquote>
Raising fees in some cases by a factor of 700% is grossly irrational and unreasonable. The current rate of inflation is 197%. Therefore, raising fees beyond the rate of inflation is simply unsustainable and grossly unreasonable and irrational.
The tuition charged and levied to students is, therefore, not the primary basis of the financing of the institution. The financing of the institution depends wholly on the government of Zimbabwe through the Consolidated Revenue Fund. 
It is, therefore, our respectful contention that given the huge supplementary budget of over 100% allocated to the UZ which takes its budget from $3,3 billion to $7,9 billion, the massive increase of tuition fees was totally unnecessary therefore grossly unreasonable, and irrational.
</blockquote>
They said the fee increase is only tuition and excludes accommodation, transport and food as well as services such as photocopying materials. 
The students added that UZ did not consider that 90% of the students at the UZ come from underprivileged backgrounds as they are children of peasant subsistence farmers, vendors, schoolteachers, drivers, cross-border traders, and pastors.
 The average salary of a teacher is $77 000.
The students contend that the decision is illegal.
However, the UZ has since announced <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/the-university-of-zimbabwe-announces-new-fee-structures-aug-dec-2022-semester/">new fee structures</a> for the August to December 2022 Semester and urged learners to come up with payment plans or apply for loans.

Students Take The University Of Zimbabwe To Court Over Fee Hike

Five University of Zimbabwe (UZ) students who were last week arrested for <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/watch-uz-students-protest-demanding-fees-must-fall/">protesting over hiked tuition fees</a> said they suffered degrading and dehumanising treatment at a police station where they were detained.
They told a local magistrate that they have been in cells which had no proper flushing systems, in the male holding cells it was actually blocked and waste was overflowing.
The five students- Tinovimba Musengi, Hazel Gwande, Purpose Mangana, Tanyaradzwa Nzvimbo and Charles Moyo – were, however, freed Friday after spending two nights in custody.
They appeared before Harare Magistrate, Munashe Chibanda and were remanded out of custody for September 26.
Through their attorney, Tinashe Chinopfukutwa of the Zimbabwe Human Rights lawyers, the students said:

There was no demarcation of the toilets and no privacy.
</blockquote>
The students were charged with disorderly conduct in a public place after they allegedly sang at the UZ main campus disturbing usual business around midday near a venue that was being used for a conference.
They were later dispersed and arrested at different locations on campus.
Moyo was reportedly arrested whilst making calls threatening other students, who were attending lectures.
Mangana, Gwande and Musengi allegedly disturbed lectures at the Faculty of Engineering at the time of their arrest, whilst Nzvimbo was part of a group of students protesting at the Computer Science department.

Fees Protest: Arrested UZ Students Say They Suffered Degrading Treatment At Police Station

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has justified the recent fee increase by local universities saying it was necessary for the establishment of specialised facilities in learning institutions.
His remarks come after the University of Zimbabwe has <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/the-university-of-zimbabwe-announces-new-fee-structures-aug-dec-2022-semester/">reversed its decision</a> to raise fees for the August – December 2022 Semester following protests by students who said they could not afford the new fees.
Writing in his weekly column in The Sunday Mail, the President, who is the Chancellor of all State universities, said the financing formula for higher education has to change. He said:
<blockquote>
For a very long time, fees for university education have been low; in some cases, lower than fees charged by many secondary schools in the country.
It certainly does not make sense that our higher education, which is at the apex of the entire education system, and which is internationally benchmarked, meaning it requires specialised facilities and tuition, turns out to be cheaper than foundational primary and secondary education.
Government, thus, supported university authorities in their decision to take the necessary corrective action.

<h2>Fees in Regional Universities:</h2>
<blockquote>
i). State universities in South Africa charge a minimum of US$1 400 for undergraduate programmes per semester and US$1 700 for postgraduate studies.
ii). The University of Botswana charges a minimum of US$1 400 in undergraduate fees per semester and a minimum of US$1 800 for postgraduate studies.
iii). The University of Zambia charges US$800 for undergraduate studies per semester and US$1 000 for postgraduate.
iv). The University of Zimbabwe is charging a minimum of US$509 for undergraduate fees per semester.

<h2>Context:</h2>
<blockquote>
Critics said Zimbabweans cannot afford the fees considering that the economy is not performing well. 
They say most of the students in universities are funded by civil servants whose salaries hover around US$300.
</blockquote>
President Mnangagwa said a significant part of the national budget will fund the setting up and expansion of universities and the establishment of new ones.  
He also expressed concern over the low uptake for the loan facility which Government guarantees, and which Government administers through banks. The president said only about 10 000 students have benefitted so far, a remarkably small number in relation to the number of students. 
Mnangagwa encouraged the private sector to sponsor as many students as they could accommodate, especially now that the current education curriculum is closely aligned to the industry through Education 5.0.

The University of Zimbabwe has announced new fee structures for the August – December 2022 Semester after an earlier increase had <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/watch-uz-students-protest-demanding-fees-must-fall/">sparked protests</a> at the higher learning institution. In a notice seen by Pindula News, acting Registrar, Dr Munyaradzi Madambi said UZ had also introduced Work-Study Programme to cater for “needy students.” Reads the notice:

2. In response to submissions by our students, the University has introduced the following flexible fees payment plans: 
i. Students that cannot pay full fees are required to pay last semester’s fees and proceed to register before 30 September 2022. 
ii. The University is conducting a ‘Means Test’ to identify needy students with the view to tailor appropriate support mechanisms according to students’ circumstances. As you would recall, no student has ever been barred from studying or sitting for examinations because of either delayed or incomplete payment of fees. 
iii. Meanwhile, the following student-centred fees payment options have been introduced for the convenience of our students: 
a. Those who pay 100% of fees by the 31st of October 2022 enjoy a 12.5% discount. 
b. Those who pay 75% of fees by 31st October 2022 enjoy a 10% discount on the amount paid. 
c. Those who pay 50% of fees by 31 October 2022 enjoy a 5% discount on the amount paid. 
iv. All outstanding fees balances should be cleared by the 30th of November 2022.
Over and above the above interventions, the University has also introduced the ‘Work-Study Programme’ to cater for needy students. Feel free to visit the Office of the Dean of Students for more information on student support and welfare options available in the Institution.

According to the new fee structure, undergraduate students are required to pay anything between $300 000 to $500 000 depending on their faculty which students described as unaffordable and beyond the reach of their parents and guardians.
The students were chased into New Complex 1, an all-girls hostel, leaving the female students traumatised, considering that most of them seemed unaware of what was going on, according to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200000434/police-break-up-uz-protests">NewsDay Zimbabwe.</a>
Most affected were first-year students staying on the ground floor of the hostel.
The students resolved to boycott lectures until the fees are reviewed, but riot police invaded the UZ campus to drive the students out of hostels.
Speaking to NewsDay, Students Representative Council president Allan Chipoyi said they were riled by the fee hike that has come amid dire economic challenges. He said:

Inasmuch as we pursue dialogue today with the administration, no student should go to lectures until the institution has resolved to go back to the fees that we were paying last semester.
</blockquote>
Some students who requested not to be named argued that the institution was going against the government on price increases.
Meanwhile, the higher learning institution yesterday held meetings with the Students Representative Council and was scheduled to hold more meetings on Tuesday to find common ground.

WATCH: UZ Students Protest Demanding "Fees Must Fall"

The University of Zimbabwe is reviewing the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/university-of-zimbabwe-raises-fees-for-the-august-december-2022-semester/">recently announced hike in tuition fees</a> of up to $500 000, described by many students as unaffordable and beyond the reach of their parents and guardians.
Vice Chancellor Professor <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Paul_Mapfumo">Paul Mapfumo</a> told The Herald Monday that the higher learning institution was seized with that matter and urged students to remain calm.
The students yesterday demonstrated denouncing the fee hike.
In an interview with The Herald, Professor Mapfumo said the university registrar had two closed-door meetings with the Student Representative Council (SRC) and they were looking forward to having another round of discussions today. He said:

We are engaging key stakeholders including the Student’s Representative Council. It is the feedback that we value. The registrar had two meetings today and we are expecting to have a round-up meeting tomorrow.

SRC president Allan Chipoyi yesterday urged students who had gathered to protest to give dialogue a chance. 
Yesterday, hundreds of University of Zimbabwe students briefly held a procession over the fees hike. They appealed to the Vice Chancellor to reconsider the move which they said was not in sync with the prevailing economic conditions.

University Of Zimbabwe Reviewing The Recently Announced Hike In Tuition Fees

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/University_of_Zimbabwe">University of Zimbabwe (UZ)</a> has <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/university-of-zimbabwe-raises-fees-for-the-august-december-2022-semester/">raised students’ fees for the August – December 2022 Semester</a> raising the eyebrows of many. The new fee structure seen by Pindula News suggests that an engineering student now needs to pay at least ZWL$500 000. 
Responding to the development, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Fadzayi_Mahere">Fadzayi Mahere</a>, a former Law lecturer at the UZ said the “poor” won’t afford the fees. Mahere who is also the national spokesperson of the opposition <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens%27_Coalition_for_Change">Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)</a> called upon authorities to review the fees downwards. She said:

The astronomical increase in fees by the @UniversityOfZim can only be described as criminal. This regime is anti-poor. A civil servant earns US$150 but has to pay ZWL$500,000 for an engineering student. That excludes living expenses. We need new leaders.
49% of Zimbabweans live in extreme poverty. A civil servant barely earns $200,000 yet the UZ has pegged fees at between $500,000 and $1million. How will the poor afford this? <a data-user-name="edmnangagwa" href="https://twitter.com/edmnangagwa/" rel="noopener user" target="_blank">@edmnangagwa</a> has failed to deliver affordable, quality education for Zimbabweans.

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Takudzwa_Ngadziore">Takudzwa Ngadziore</a>, the leader of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Students_Union" title="Zimbabwe National Students Union">Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU)</a> also rallied “young people” to demand a review of the fees downwards. He said:

Other commentators also said education was becoming a privilege as school fees in Zimbabwe are now beyond the reach of an average parent.
Fees have been going up in recent years with learning institutions citing the depreciation of the Zimbabwe dollar.

Mahere Says The Govt Is "Anti-poor" Following An "Astronomical Increase In Fees By UZ"

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has raised students’ fees for the August – December 2022 Semester. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a statement following the violence that rocked the <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2022/07/02/students-activism-violence-breaks-at-uz-as-zicosu-loses-to-zinasu/">students’ election</a> at the University of Zimbabwe this Friday. There were reports saying the police intervened and assaulted students. In a statement seen by Pindula News, police officers did not interfere during the Student Representative Council elections. The Zimbabwe Republic Police wishes to set the record straight to the public that no interference was done by the Police during the University of Zimbabwe Student Representative Council elections held on 01st July 2022.
The Police was called in after some missiles had been thrown in the room where votes were being counted and validated, resulting in windows being damaged at the building.
It is on record that the Zimbabwe Republic Police has received complaints from both ZINASU and ZICOSU members on the violence which took place after the students had queried the delay in the announcement of results. The Police is investigating the case.
it is wrong for politicians to claim that the Police beat and stopped members of ZINASU from celebrating victory or their member being elected into the University of Zimbabwe Student Representative Council’s structures as President.
Politicians are reminded to stay in their spaces and not involve the police in issues which have nothing to do with policing.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police will continue to maintain law and order in the country for the benefit of the public and will not tolerate actions by politicians to cause alarm or send wrong information to the public on policing.

Police Issue Statement On Violence At University Of Zimbabwe

Violence reportedly broke out at the University of Zimbabwe when the ZANU PF-aligned <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZICOSU">ZICOSU</a> lost the election to the opposition-aligned <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_National_Students_Union">ZINASU</a>.
Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) national spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere has condemned the violence. Posting on Twitter this Saturday, Mahere said:

We’ve received disturbing reports that violence broke out at the UZ yesterday after ZICOSU lost the election to ZINASU. It is reported that armed @PoliceZimbabwe beat up students. This is not the Zimbabwe we want. Students must be allowed to make choices without persecution.
</blockquote>
ZINASU’s Allan Chipoyi won the presidency while ZICOSU’s President, Darlington Chiwa, became the Vice President.
It is alleged that ZICOSU had earlier threatened violence if its candidate loses. 
Some students also reported that ZICOSU lost despite donating chicken inn, caps and t-shirts to students to influence them to vote against ZINASU. 
Observers say if police are beating up students for voting for a ZINASU candidate, they will likely do more if ZANU PF loses elections in 2023. 
Some urged the opposition to put in place defence mechanisms such as awareness campaigns at the international level and seeking serious allies.

Students Activism: Violence Breaks At UZ As ZICOSU Loses To ZINASU

The University of Zimbabwe (UZ) has this week increased fees to ZW$51 088 up from ZW$40 870 just two weeks after the higher learning institution had made a review.
An official at the institution confirmed the development in a telephone interview with Pindula News.
This is happening against the backdrop of soaring inflation that has eroded the salaries of workers across the board. 
Fears are that many students will defer their studies as they will be unable to pay the fees.

Commenting on the hike, journalist Hopewell Chin’ono said the fees were beyond the reach of ordinary citizens. He said:

These fees are beyond the reach of an ordinary Zimbabwean. A Junior doctor earns ZW$36 000. This is what we mean when we say the economy has collapsed!
</blockquote>
This is happening just days after President Emmerson Mnangagwa said that there shall be free basic education in 2023. 
Some observers say the pledge is a political gimmick meant to entice the electorate into voting the ruling ZANU PF again in 2023.

University Of Zimbabwe Has Increased Fees Just After Another Hike A Fortnight Ago

A Zimbabwe National Geospatial and Space Agent, Martin Magomana (36), hacked the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) computer network recently and allocated accommodation to students at very low fees.
Once he had that access, Magomana proceeded to approach students who were seeking accommodation and charged them between US$40 and $60 to secure it. 
He is said to have done this between October and November 2021. All in all, he allegedly pocketed over US$3000 from the 64 students he offered the service.
One student who was allocated a room by Magomana went to the Accommodations Officer to get confirmation that he had indeed been allocated the room. 
The admissions crew investigated the matter and found that he had been fraudulently allocated the room. 
That’s when they saw that 63 other students had been allocated accommodation by the same actor.
When applications are received, a panel decides on who gets accommodation and updates the register accordingly, then the system is updated. 
The higher learning institution has a record of students whose applications for accommodation were successful and that record is offline. The computer system is updated periodically.
The messages he exchanged with students, soliciting money were then brought to light and he was promptly located and charged. My man had a good paper trail into his whole operation. So it shouldn’t be hard for the prosecution to get the conviction.

Man Hacks UZ System Allocates Accommodation To 64 Students, Pockets Thousands

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has sued a number of companies that ordered workers to take the Covid-19 vaccines – or risk losing their jobs.
In an urgent High Court filing on Friday, the ZCTU said the actions by companies such as Zimnat Insurance, the Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA), TelOne, Windmill Limited, Seed Co Zimbabwe and the Manicaland State University of Applied Sciences violated workers’ constitutional rights.
Public service minister Paul Mavhima and Attorney-General Prince Machaya are also joined in the court action. The ZCTU argues in the court application:

There is no law in Zimbabwe making vaccination compulsory. Each person, having fully considered the implications and effects of vaccination, is expected to make a personal decision on whether or not to get vaccinated and where a person decides to get vaccinated, he or she is expected to make a decision relating to the timing of the vaccination… 
In the process, the aforesaid employers are infringing the fundamental rights of the affected employees protected by section 51, 52 (c), 65 (1) and 65 (4) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe. Thousands of workers in Zimbabwe have been affected and thousands are more likely to be affected if this court application is not heard urgently.
</blockquote>
The ZCTU said minister Mavhima, through its lawyer Professor Lovemore Madhuku, was not taking appropriate action to protect the workers as section 17 of the Labour Act (chap 28:01) requires.”
Many companies have been ordering their workers to be vaccinated or lose their jobs while some learning institutions including the University of Zimbabwe are also reportedly threatening to block unvaccinated learners from entering their premises.
Vaccination remains voluntary but members of the public feel the conditions set by many service providers are an indirect way of making vaccination compulsory.

The University of Zimbabwe has extended registration to Friday the 20th of this month to allow students to complete the registration process.
In a notice, the higher learning institution said:

University Of Zimbabwe Extends Registration

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said that his administration will pursue an education model that empowers human capital.
His remarks come when education in Zimbabwe and Africa at large has been criticised for producing graduates who are not up to the task of solving the challenges in the contemporary world.
Speaking at the University of Zimbabwe where he officially opened the academic learning institution’s innovation hub, which coincided with the launching of the university’s 2019-2025 strategic plan in Harare on Monday, Mnangagwa said:
<blockquote>Under the second republic, government will pursue an education model that empowers human capital to respond to the ever-changing world.</blockquote>
His remarks were also echoed by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Paul Mapfumo, and Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Professor Amon Murwira, who both emphasised on the importance of moving away from a system where people are job seekers into becoming innovators to develop the economy.

Govt Will Pursue An Education Model That Empowers Human Capital

The University of Zimbabwe has issued a statement notifying students admitted for the August 2019 intake that the deadline for the payment of deposit had changed.
The Notice that was posted on the Academic Institution’s page read as follows:

The University of Zimbabwe wishes to advise successful applicants for August 2019 intake of the following important change:

NOTICE: UZ Advises Students Of A Change To Deadline For Fees Payment

University of Zimbabwe (UZ) won the Zimbabwe Universities Sports Association (Zusa) games held at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust).
UZ won a total of 61 medals. The institution won 26 gold, 16 silver and 19 bronze medals in the three-day competition. Tertiary institutions competed in golf, volleyball, handball, cricket, athletics, hockey, table tennis, karate and taekwondo. Midlands State University (MSU) were runners-up with 23 gold, 16 silver and 18 bronze medals, while hosts Nust settled for third place with 11 gold, 16 silver and 11 bronze medals.
Other participating universities were Africa University, Bindura University of Science Education, Catholic University in Zimbabwe (CUZ), Chinhoyi University of Technology, Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), Gwanda State University (GSU), Harare Institute of Technology (HIT), Lupane State University, Reformed Church University (RCU), Women’s University in Africa and Zimbabwe Ezekiel Guti University (ZEGU). MSU and GZU dominated in athletics, while UZ dominated the swimming pool.
HIT, CUZ, GSU, RCU and ZEGU were last after failing to get a single medal in all nine sporting disciplines.

UZ Wins ZUSA Games

In a statement yesterday, the University of Zimbabwe said tuition and accommodation fees remain unchanged after consideration of the ongoing economic challenges in the country.
The institution however said it will continue monitoring trends in the pricing and cost structures of food and related commodities. The institution said it would advise stakeholders of any changes. Part of the statement reads:
<blockquote>The University of Zimbabwe wishes to advise the following to all students regarding tuition and accommodation fees for the February-June 2019 semester. The tuition and accommodation fees remain unchanged with the same structure as in the August-December 2018 semester. In this decision, the university is conscious of challenges that our students, parents, guardians and sponsors, including Government, are facing under the current economic environment. We remain grateful for the support our various sponsors continue to render to students and the institution.</blockquote>
