Premier League referee David Coote has been suspended following the release of video footage in which he is heard calling Jürgen Klopp a “German cunt” and referring to Liverpool as “shit.”
The remarks were made after a 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Burnley during Project Restart in 2020, where Coote described Klopp as “arrogant” and claimed he accused him of lying.
Just before his suspension, Coote officiated Liverpool’s recent 2-0 victory against Aston Villa.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), which is responsible for overseeing match officials in professional football in England, said:

David Coote has been suspended with immediate effect pending a full investigation. PGMOL will be making no further comment until that process is complete.

As reported by <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/nov/11/referee-david-coote-video-jurgen-klopp-liverpool-pgmol-premier-league">The Guardian</a>, the controversial video appears to date from the 2020-21 season, featuring referee David Coote making derogatory remarks about Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool.
In the footage, Coote expresses disdain for Klopp, labelling him “arrogant” and recalling a previous incident during a match against Burnley, where he felt Klopp accused him of lying.
Coote uses explicit language, referring to Klopp as a “German cunt” and criticising Liverpool’s performance in a game earlier that day.
The conversation was recorded by another man, who also made disparaging comments about Klopp and Liverpool fans.
In the video, Coote and the man imply they are breaching COVID regulations by sitting close together. In a separate clip, Coote asks not to share the original recording.
The discussion includes a still image of Coote on the touchline with Klopp during Liverpool’s 7-2 defeat to Aston Villa.
In Liverpool’s next match, Coote served as the video assistant referee when Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford’s challenge on Virgil van Dijk, which resulted in an anterior cruciate ligament injury, went unpunished.
Coote also faced criticism from Klopp as the VAR for the 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Arsenal last December, where an apparent handball by Martin Ødegaard did not lead to a penalty.
Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer for PGMOL, later said that the incident should have resulted in a spot-kick.
It is understood Liverpool feel it would be inappropriate to comment with an investigation underway
Under Coote’s officiating, Liverpool has won five, drawn one, and lost two of the eight matches he refereed during Klopp’s tenure as manager.

The ZIFA Normalisation Committee (NC) says it will introduce the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) course to train local referees.
ZIFA NC Chairperson Lincoln Mutasa said this while commissioning FIFA member association courses for referees and match commissioners in Harare. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/thestandard/sport/article/200019217/var-training-for-local-referees">Mutasa said</a>:

There will be some training going on there but one of the conditions that we gave CAF is that we have VAR training in Zimbabwe for our referees because we understand it is actually coming to South Africa.
So they agreed that next year, they will bring that VAR vehicle here to train our referees.
We are doing this because we don’t want you to be left behind when we go to the 2026 World Cup.

Morocco became the first African country to use the VAR system in a top-flight league match in 2021.
VAR is a technology used in football matches to assist referees in making more accurate decisions.
It was introduced to help minimize errors in crucial situations and maintain fairness in the game.
VAR involves a team of video assistant referees who review key incidents in real time using video footage from multiple camera angles.
They have access to different camera angles and slow-motion replays to analyze incidents more thoroughly.
When a controversial incident occurs, such as a potential goal, a penalty decision, a red card incident, or cases of mistaken identity, the on-field referee can choose to consult VAR.
The referee makes a gesture of forming a TV screen with their hands to signal that they are seeking assistance from VAR.

ZIFA Plans To Introduce VAR Next Year

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said Saturday’s match against Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium should be replayed after a VAR blunder denied the Reds a legitimate goal.
Down to 10 men at the time after Curtis Jones’ yellow card was upgraded to a red, after a VAR intervention, Liverpool striker Luis Diaz scored what could have been the opening goal of the match.
However, after a quick VAR check, the goal was ruled out for offside and the match restarted, but replays clearly showed the Tottenham defender Cristian Romero played Díaz onside.
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) on Tuesday released the full audio from the VAR centre.
Speaking to the media on Wednesday ahead of the visit of Union SG in the Europa League, Klopp said he is not “angry” with what occurred but wants a replay. The audio didn’t change it at all, I wasn’t interested in why things happen because I knew, I saw the outcome – we scored and it didn’t count.
I wasn’t waiting for the audio and sitting there hoping I could find out how it happened or whatever.
What I want to say is that it’s really important, as big and important as football is, that we really deal with it in a proper way.
I mean all the people involved, the on-field ref, linesman, fourth official and especially VAR, did not do that on purpose.
We should not forget that. It was a mistake, an obvious mistake, and I think there would have been solutions for it afterwards.
I can say immediately, and some people won’t want me to say, not as a manager of Liverpool, more as a football person, the only outcome should be a replay. That’s how it is.
Probably will not happen, the argument against that is if we open that gate, everybody will ask for it.
I think the situation is that unprecedented that, it didn’t happen before, I’m 56 years old and since 50 years in football and I don’t always deal well with it, but I’m used to wrong decisions.
Something like that, as far as I can remember, never happened. That’s why I think a replay would be the right thing.
Against the argument, if it happened again I think a replay would be the right thing to do.
Or, the referee has the opportunity to bring the coaches together and say, ‘We made a mistake, but we can sort it. Let Liverpool score a goal and we start from there.’
What makes it a bit more special is that we conceded two minutes after we scored a regular goal.
How all things depend on each other, if the goal would’ve counted the ball would’ve started in the middle of the pitch. It would’ve been different.
That’s my view on it, I’m not angry with any of them. Not at all.
It’s not allowed to go for them, they made a mistake and they felt horrible that night, I’m 100 percent sure. No one needs further punishment.
What made this day really difficult for us, was all the other decisions.
