The <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Economic Freedom</a> Fighters (EFF) led by <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Julius Malema</a> have released a statement condemning the signing of <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2023/03/23/people-identifying-as-gay-risk-life-in-prison-in-uganda-new-bill/">the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law</a> by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni. In a statement seen by Pindula News, the EFF views the signing of the bill as a significant step backwards in promoting democracy, <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">freedom of expression</a>, and <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">freedom of association</a> in Africa.
The law legalizes the persecution of members of the LGBTQI± community by imposing life imprisonment and, in some cases, <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">death sentences</a> for those who engage in same-sex relationships.
The EFF believes that the anti-homosexuality bill, which is based on state-sponsored hate and homophobia, is not rooted in any historical truth or objective reality. The party said the law is a product of outdated attitudes that have been imposed on African societies by Western societies.
The EFF encourages all <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">human rights activists</a> to continue to oppose “these illogical, hateful, and homophobic laws” passed against the LGBTQI± community in Uganda. The party also said the laws are a stepping stone towards the repression of people on the basis of villainizing their identity, and all of Africa must resist hateful ideas seeking to criminalize the identities of people. <h2>EFF STATEMENT ON THE UGANDAN PRESIDENT YOWERI MUSEVENI’S DECISION TO SIGN THE ANTI-HOMOSEXUALITY BILL INTO LAW</h2>

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) condemns the signing of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni officially into law, an act which has today officially legalized the persecution of members of the LGBTQI± community.
Museveni, who had returned the bill to the Ugandan Parliament to be revised due to its lack of provision for so-called “rehabilitation” of those engaged in same sex relationships, has now signed the inhumane and draconian legislation into law, a fundamental step backwards in the quest to promote democracy, freedom of expression and freedom of association in Africa.
As of today in Uganda, those who identify as homosexuals and choose their partners on the basis of their sexual identity can be sentenced to life imprisonment and in instances of “repeat offenders”, death. The bill that has been signed by Museveni is nothing short of state-sponsored hate and homophobia.
The narrative that gender and sexual identities that are non-heteronormative are against African values, cultures and that they somehow erode family values is baseless and dangerous. It is a hateful logic that is not rooted in any historical truth or objective reality, as many within the LGBTQI± community continue to practice their cultures and spiritualities to no detriment of any of the institutions they choose to associate with.
Ironically, the values of anti-homosexuality which inspire the anti-homosexuality bill which Museveni has signed into law, stem from colonialist laws imposed by the British in Uganda during the time of British Colonialism in the country.
The assertion therefore that homosexuality is a product of imperialism is counter-intuitive and nonsensical, as Western society has historically been at the forefront of outlawing and shaming homosexuality, and these outdated attitudes are what inform the pervasive homophobia in society today.
The EFF encourages all human rights activists within and outside of Uganda to continue to stand against the illogical, hateful and homophobic laws being passed against the LGBTQI± Community in Uganda.

EFF Condemns Anti-gay Law Signed By Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni

With the adoption of a new law by parliament to crack down on homosexual activity, people who identify as gay now run the risk of serving life in prison in Uganda. 
The new legislation also includes the death penalty in certain cases.
A rights activist told the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-65034343">BBC</a> the debate around the bill had led to fear of more attacks on gay people. Said the activist:
<blockquote>
There is a lot of blackmail. People are receiving calls that ‘if you don’t give me money, I will report that you are gay.
</blockquote>
The bill is one of the toughest pieces of anti-gay legislation in Africa.
Homosexual acts are already illegal in Uganda but this bill introduces many new criminal offences.
Friends, family and members of the community would have a duty to report individuals in same-sex relationships to the authorities.
It was passed with widespread support in Uganda’s parliament on Tuesday evening.
Amnesty International has called the bill “appalling”, “ambiguous” and “vaguely worded”. Tigere Chagutah, Amnesty International’s director for East and Southern Africa said:

This deeply repressive legislation will institutionalise discrimination, hatred, and prejudice against LGBTI people – including those who are perceived to be LGBTI – and block the legitimate work of civil society, public health professionals, and community leaders.
</blockquote>
It has also been condemned by both the UK’s Africa Minister Andrew Mitchell and the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
The White House has warned Uganda of possible economic repercussions if the new law comes into force.
In the weeks before the debate, the anti-homosexual sentiment was prominent in the media, an activist who wanted to remain anonymous told the BBC.
The bill will now go to President Yoweri Museveni who can choose to use his veto – and maintain good relations with Western donors and investors – or sign it into law.
He has made several anti-gay comments in recent weeks and also criticised Western countries for putting pressure on Uganda over the issue.
Another gay rights activist accused the government of using the bill to distract the public from its failures to address some of their pressing economic concerns.
The bill’s backers say they are trying to protect children.
The final version of the bill has yet to be officially published but elements discussed in parliament include:
<blockquote>
1). A person who is convicted of grooming or trafficking children for purposes of engaging them in homosexual activities faces life in prison.
2). Individuals or institutions which support or fund LGBT groups’ activities or organisations, or publish, broadcast and distribute pro-gay media material and literature, also face prosecution and imprisonment.
3). Media groups, journalists and publishers face prosecution and imprisonment for publishing, broadcasting, distribution of any content that advocates for gay rights or “promotes homosexuality”.
4). Death penalty for what is described as “aggravated homosexuality”, that is sexual abuse of a child, a person with disability or vulnerable people, or in cases where a victim of homosexual assault is infected with a life-long illness.
5). Property owners also face the risk of being jailed if their premises are used as a “brothel” for homosexual acts or any other sexual minorities’ rights activities.

In 2014, Uganda’s constitutional court nullified another act which had toughened laws against the LGBT community.
Same-sex relations are banned in about 30 African countries, where many people uphold conservative religious and social values.

People Identifying As Gay Risk Life In Prison In Uganda - New Bill

Ugandan authorities on Saturday imposed a travel lockdown on two Ebola-hit districts as part of efforts to stop the spread of the contagious disease.
The measures announced by President Yoweri Museveni mean residents of the central Ugandan districts of Mubende and Kassanda can’t travel into or out of those areas by private or public means, according to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/10/16/1129342224/uganda-has-locked-down-two-districts-in-bid-to-stem-the-spread-of-ebola">NPR</a>. 
Cargo vehicles and others transiting from Kampala, the capital, to southwestern Uganda are still allowed to operate, President Museveni said.
All entertainment places, including bars, as well as places of worship, were ordered to close while activities such as burials in those districts must be supervised by health officials. 
A nighttime curfew also has been imposed. The restrictions will last at least 21 days. Museveni said:

These are temporary measures to control the spread of Ebola.
</blockquote>
Ebola has infected about 58 people in the East African country since September 20, when authorities declared an outbreak. 
At least 19 people have died, including four health workers. 
Ugandan authorities were not quick in detecting the outbreak, which began infecting people in a farming community in August as the “strange illness” described by local authorities.
The new measures come amid concern that some patients in the Ebola hot spots could secretly try to seek treatment elsewhere — as did one man who fled Mubende and died at a hospital in Kampala earlier this month.
Ugandan authorities have documented more than 1 100 contacts of known Ebola patients, according to the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 
<h2>Ebola transmission and symptoms:</h2>
The Sudan strain of Ebola, for which there is no proven vaccine, is circulating in the country of 45 million people.
Ebola manifests as viral hemorrhagic fever and can be difficult to detect at first because fever is also a symptom of malaria.
It is spread through contact with the bodily fluids of an infected person or contaminated materials. 
Symptoms include fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, muscle pain and at times internal and external bleeding.
Ebola first appeared in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks in South Sudan and Congo, where it occurred in a village near the Ebola River after which the disease is named.

Uganda Imposes A Travel Lockdown On Two Ebola-hit Districts

Officially opening the 60th edition of the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) in Bulawayo, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni said trade is central to economic development. Museveni said:
<blockquote>When I buy what you produce, I support your prosperity,” he said. “When you buy what I produce, you support my prosperity. Therefore, trade is very crucial. Fortunately, in Eastern Africa we are now developing the railway system through Kenya and through Tanzania. 
Therefore, it will be easy to access our products and your products through the ports of Dar es Salaam and the ports of Mombasa.</blockquote>
He also lamented over the exportation of raw, unprocessed goods noting that constitutes revenue leakage and exportation of employment. President Museveni said:
<blockquote>His Excellency has told me that as of today, Zimbabwe is only processing 30 percent of its cotton, 70 percent is exported unprocessed. That has been the problem with Uganda and we have been struggling with that. 
We need to educate our population that when you export a kilogramme of unprocessed cotton, when the prices are not good, you may get $1 and when the prices are good you may get $3. But the one who takes that kilogramme of cotton and makes it into a number of shirts may get $15. So, you get $1 from the same amount of cotton from which there is $15. That means Uganda and Zimbabwe, in each kilogramme of cotton, we are donating $14 to other countries. 
Therefore, when we go for a donors conference in Paris, one is not sure who the donor is and who the donee is. It is, however, not the loss of money, the $14 in every kilogramme of cotton, it is the loss of jobs.</blockquote>
