Zambia police on Monday arrested a woman from the Garden Compound, Lusaka, along with her four children in connection with the murder of her husband. His body had reportedly been kept in their home for two years.
The woman, identified as 51-year-old prophetess Sylvia Mutoba Kalaba, kept her late husband’s skeleton for spiritual powers.
Authorities believe that she may have killed her 55-year-old husband, George Kalaba, for ritualistic purposes; however, Mutoba Kalaba has vehemently denied these accusations.
According to the <a href="https://www.maravipost.com/i-kept-my-husband-body-to-skeleton-stage-for-spiritual-powers-confesses-zambia-prophetess-sylvia-kalaba/">Maravi Post</a>, she claims her husband died of natural causes, as he suffered from asthma. 
Mutoba Kalaba said she preserved his skeleton to aid her in performing miracles, given her role as a prophetess. She said:

I was advised by a ritualist in Tanzania to do this in order to perform countless miracles and make money as I am a prophetess and through this.
I have helped a lot of people who have been flocking to my house of prayer to receive financial breakthroughs and other miracles.

Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the arrest of Mutoba Kalaba and her children in connection with the discovery of skeletal remains in their home.

This case was initially reported as a missing person investigation by the deceased man’s elder brother.
The skeletal remains were found almost a year and a half after the family could not ascertain the man’s whereabouts.
The remains of George Kalaba discovered lying on a bed, were reduced to a skeleton, indicating he had been dead for a significant period.
Since July 2023, George’s family had been inquiring about his whereabouts, but Mutoba Kalaba reportedly denied them access to him.
The arrest followed a report made by George’s brother, Emmanuel Kalaba, 55, residing at House Number 1295 Chelstone Extension.
Hamoonga identified the suspects as Sylvia Mutoba Kalaba, the deceased’s wife, and her children: Natasha, 19; Sandra, 22; Wendi, 27; and a female juvenile.
When police followed up on the report, they found the family had locked themselves inside the house with the skeletal remains.
It is alleged that from July 2023 until January 2025, Mutoba Kalaba prevented family members from visiting George.
A tenant, Emmanuel, eventually learned that George had not been seen for over two years, raising concerns about his well-being.
Hamoonga said that the skeletal remains of George Kalaba have been collected and taken to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Mortuary.
A postmortem was scheduled for January 15, 2025, to determine the cause of death.

Zambia’s Constitutional Court has ruled that former president Edgar Lungu is ineligible to stand in future elections after he announced his return to active politics in 2023, reported <a href="https://www.news24.com/news24/africa/news/constitutional-court-rules-lungu-cant-stand-as-a-presidential-candidate-in-zambia-20241210">News24</a>.
The court determined that Lungu’s first term, which lasted 20 months from 2015 to 2016 following the death of then-president Michael Sata, should be considered a full term.
His second term spanned from September 2016 to August 2021, after which he lost the presidency to United Party for National Development candidate Hakainde Hichilema in the 2021 national election.
Lungu had contended that his initial period in office did not count towards the maximum term limit, but the court was persuaded otherwise by arguments presented by youth activist Michelo Chizombe.
This ruling prevents Lungu from challenging incumbent Hakainde Hichilema in the 2026 elections.
Justice Arnold Mweetwa Shilimi, the deputy president of the Constitutional Court said:

A person who has twice held office and been elected cannot serve another term. Our combined interpretation of the constitution is that the respondent’s term of office from 25 January 2015 to 13 September 2016 constituted a term of office.

Lungu assumed office after the death of Sata in October 2014. Chizombe argued that since Lungu had been properly installed, it did not matter that his succession was not via a vote.
Ahead of the trial, Lungu accused Hichilema of using the law to avoid a showdown at the polls, describing it as “cowardly and dirty political schemes” to bar him.
The Constitutional Court was initially seen as sympathetic to Lungu, who had appointed six of its eleven judges.
Hichilema removed three of those judges, all of whom had ruled against him when he challenged Lungu’s previous victory.

A 30-minute nationwide power outage in Zambia over the weekend was due to a technical fault in the interconnected power networks between it and Zimbabwe, a senior government official has said.
Addressing the media in the capital Lusaka on Monday, Peter Mumba, permanent secretary in the Ministry of Energy, said state power utility ZESCO Limited worked diligently to resolve the outage, which occurred Sunday evening. He said (via <a href="https://www.aa.com.tr/en/africa/zambia-says-power-outage-caused-by-fault-in-interconnected-network-with-zimbabwe/3404401">AA</a>):

During the power outage, there were two mines that had people trapped underground. These mines included a Chinese mine in Chambishi and Mopani Mine at Mindolo shaft. The people who were trapped were all safely rescued as the mines were supplied with an alternative power supply.

Thabo Kawana, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Media, said that no loss of life occurred in hospitals due to the power outage.
Kawana said that key institutions, including the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia’s largest referral health facility, had power restored within 30 minutes and are equipped with backup power sources.
ZESCO Acting Managing Director Justin Loongo said the Southern African Power Pool is investigating the source of the outage.

Zambia Faces Electricity Blackout Due To "System Disturbance"

A Zambian Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Jay Banda, has been arrested by Zimbabwean police after escaping from custody in his country in August 2024.
Banda escaped from Chipata General Hospital on August 4, 2024, while under police guard. He was facing serious charges, including aggravated robbery and attempted murder, and was in custody at the time of his escape.
He was arrested in Zimbabwe on November 19, 2024, after being on the run for over three months. The Zambian government had offered a two million Kwacha reward for information leading to his capture.
Banda (Independent) is the MP for the Petauke Central constituency.
Jack Mwiimbu, Zambia’s Home Affairs and Internal Security minister confirmed the arrest in a Wednesday statement and praised Zimbabwean authorities’ cooperation in apprehending Banda. He said:

The Home Affairs and Internal Security Ministry wishes to inform the public that Honourable Emmanuel Jay Banda, who escaped from lawful custody at Chipata General Hospital on the night of August 4, 2024, has been apprehended in Zimbabwe.
Subsequent information following his escape indicated that Hon Banda was renting a flat in Harare, Zimbabwe.
This information was promptly communicated to the relevant Zimbabwean authorities, who, through their cooperation, managed to apprehend Hon Banda on November 19, 2024, at around 1000 hours.

Banda escaped from Chipata General Hospital while under police and correctional service guard.
He was receiving medical treatment when he disappeared, leading to a police investigation and multiple arrests.
Banda has been an MP since 2021 and is associated with former President Edgar Lungu, who lost the presidency to Hakainde Hichilema that same year.
Earlier this year, the opposition Patriotic Front reported that Banda was found lying on a farmhouse’s kitchen doorstep, claiming he had been dumped there by unknown individuals.
Banda’s lawyer, Sakwiba Sikota, alleged that police forcibly transferred him to Maina Soko Military Hospital against his family’s wishes.
The charges against the MP stem from an incident that occurred on December 14, 2015, at Mzigawa Primary School in Vubwi District, located in the eastern part of the country. During this incident, property valued at Kwacha 12,000 (approximately $435) was reportedly stolen.
Court documents detail the stolen items, which include a Canon camera worth K10,000, spectacles valued at K1,800, two bank cards, and K200 in cash. The victim of this alleged robbery is identified as Peter Sukwa Muchelenga.

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has suspended three Constitutional Court judges with immediate effect, his office announced on Monday.
The suspended judges are Justice Anne Sitali, Justice Mungeni Mulenga, and Justice Palan Mulonda, all of whom were appointed by Hichilema’s predecessor, Edgar Lungu.
In a statement released by State House spokesperson Clayson Hamasaka on Monday evening, the details of the suspension were outlined as follows:

President Hakainde Hichilema has with immediate effect, acting on the recommendation in the report presented to him by the Judicial Complaints Commission suspended three (3) Judges of the Constitutional Court of Zambia.
The suspended Judges include; Justice Anne Sitali, Justice Mungeni Mulenga and Justice Palan Mulonda.
The suspension of the three is in exercise of the powers vested in the President in Article 144 (3) of the Constitution of the Republic of Zambia.

The move may increase scrutiny of Zambia’s democracy. Last month, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights expressed concern over multiple allegations regarding the arbitrary arrests of opposition leaders.
These arrests were on charges that included unlawful assembly and espionage. In response, the government rejected these allegations.
Zambian politicial commentator, Sishuwa Sishuwa, suggested that the suspension of the three judges is motivated by four partisan considerations on the part of President Hichilema. In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Sishuwa wrote:

The first is revenge. The three judges who have been suspended are the ones who ruled against Hichilema in the 2016 petition that he brought against the re-election of then President Lungu following that year’s presidential election.
At the time, Hichilema was righty aggrieved that the three judges reversed under very strange circumstances the judgement that the full bench of five justices had made a few days earlier and, in so doing, terminated the hearing of his petition on account of what they called lapse of time.
Disappointed with their conduct, Hichilema accused the three judges who threw out his petition of “being corrupt and under President Edgar Lungu’s control”.
Their suspension constitutes a form of payback punishment for their conduct over that 2016 case.
</blockquote>
Sishuwa said the second motivation for the suspension of the three judges appears to be the eligibility case involving Edgar Lungu, whom Hichilema is determined to exclude from running in the 2026 election based on the real fear that the former president might defeat him.
She argued that by suspending the three judges who are all likely to rule that Lungu is eligible to run again, as per their three previous rulings on the matter, Hichilema is strategically reducing the total number of judges on the ConCourt bench to 8.
This 8 would consist of a majority of five that are likely to rule against Lungu and the remaining three judges who, unless they abandon their 2021 judgement, will constitute a minority.
The third motivation behind the suspension and imminent removal of the three judges, according to Sishuwa, is the desire to rig the ConCourt in favour of the president in the event of a disputed 2026 election. 
The constitutional court has the final say on all matters relating to the interpretation of Zambia’s Constitution, including the election of the president.
Sishuwa said the fourth and final motivation is to send a warning to other judges about what awaits them should they dare to rule against Hichilema.

Zambian President Hichilema Suspends Three Constitutional Court Judges

Zambia has rejected allegations made by the United Nations Special Rapporteurs of the Human Rights Council regarding the state of human rights in the country.
On Thursday, August 29, UN independent experts expressed concern over numerous reports of arbitrary arrests and detentions involving leaders and members of opposition parties, parliamentarians, human rights defenders, and activists.
The experts claimed that those arrested faced charges including unlawful assembly, espionage, hate speech, and seditious practices, urging the Zambian government to immediately stop infringing on the fundamental rights of its citizens.
In a statement released on Friday, August 30, Zambia’s Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, dismissed the allegations, stating that the UNHRC Special Rapporteurs’ report contains “inaccuracies and misrepresentations.” Reads the statement:

The Government of the Republic of Zambia takes note of the statement issued by the United Nations Special Rapporteurs of the Human Rights Council, expressing concerns about the alleged infringements on fundamental freedoms in Zambia.
While we appreciate the role of the UNHRC in monitoring and upholding human rights globally, we must express our deep concern and disappointment regarding the inaccuracies and misrepresentations contained in the report.
First and foremost, the assertion that members of the clergy have been arrested under this administration is not only misleading but also alarming, especially coming from a body such as the UNHRC, because it is completely false.
The Government of Zambia under UPND, has no record of any such arrests, and we are perplexed as to the source of this erroneous information. Zambia has always upheld the freedom of religion and expression, and any claims to the contrary are baseless.
Furthermore, the report’s claim that State Actors have instrumentalised legal provisions to suppress the legitimate exercise of freedom of expression is equally unfounded.
The Zambia Police Service, under the current administration, has been mandated to safeguard the peace and security of the country.
However, we have also been very clear in condemning any excesses by law enforcement officers. The government is committed to ensuring that the rule of law is upheld, and any actions by the police are conducted within the bounds of legality and respect for human rights.
It is also important to address the report’s suggestion that there is no democratic space left for the opposition in Zambia.
The UPND Government has made significant strides in upholding and protecting the democratic values of our country.
We have initiated a consultative process for the review and possible repeal of the Public Order Act, a move that underscores our commitment to enhancing democratic governance and expanding the democratic space for all Zambians.
Claims relating to attacks on journalists are equally inaccurate. To the contrary, under the current administration, journalists are free to criticise the Government without fear of retribution.
The media plays a crucial role in our democracy, and we are committed to ensuring that journalists operate freely and without intimidation.
Moreover, it is surprising and disappointing that the UNHRC has not acknowledged the progress made by this Government in removing draconian laws, such as the defamation of the President law, the death penalty, and the enactment of the Access to Information Law. 
These are significant steps that demonstrate our dedication to enhancing human rights and democratic freedoms in Zambia.
Human rights cannot be fully enjoyed in a state of lawlessness. The very concept of rights inherently creates duties for rights holders to exercise those rights responsibly and within the boundaries of the law. 
In this regard, we have always encouraged the police and other law enforcement agencies to exercise careful judgement when cautioning citizens who commit offences in the exercise and enjoyment of their freedoms.
We must clarify that contrary to the claims made in the report, the UNHRC Special Rapporteurs have not been in touch with the Zambian Government regarding these concerns.
Had the UNHRC reached out, we would have graciously welcomed the opportunity to provide clarification and address any misunderstandings. 
Open and constructive dialogue is essential in ensuring that accurate and fair assessments are made, and we regret that this opportunity was missed.
Nevertheless, the Zambian Government will engage with the UNHRC to reaffirm our commitment in upholding and protecting human rights and ensuring that all citizens, regardless of political affiliation or social standing, enjoy their rights and freedoms in a safe and democratic environment.

Zambia Denies UN Allegations On Human Rights Violations

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has demanded that local publication NewsDay retract a story published on June 28th, titled “US Scoffs at ED”.
The article was based on remarks made by Mnangagwa during a recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg.
In the meeting, Mnangagwa claimed that the United States was consolidating its influence in neighbouring Zambia, both in terms of security and financial support, in order to isolate Zimbabwe.
However, in a statement issued on Friday, Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba accused NewsDay of falsely asserting that the Zimbabwean president had stated that “Zambia posed a security threat to Zimbabwe” and that “Zambia had become an American client-state and was bent on destabilizing the region.”
Charamba warned that the Office of the President would take unspecified action against the newspaper if the story was not retracted. Said Charamba:

The Office of the President and Cabinet takes very strong exception to both misrepresentations cited above, which are intentionally malicious, and which are meant to drive a wedge between the two sister Republics of Zimbabwe and Zambia.
President Mnangagwa’s remarks were very clear and are in the public domain; they pointedly referred to, and abhorred America’s hostile activities in the Sadc [Southern African Development Community] region, which activities are calculated to isolate Zimbabwe, and to undermine peaceful inter-state relations, good neighbourliness and cohesion which all member states in our region are sworn to, continually cherish and jealously guard.
For the record and for the avoidance of any doubt, President Mnangagwa stands by his remarks in St Petersburg which raised well-founded fears for Zimbabwe regarding American intentions and activities in our region, and which voiced and defended Zimbabwe’s sacrosanct security interests, while echoing the collective position of Sadc and the African Union, AU, against any foreign military presence and/or activities on African soil.
At no point did the president of Zimbabwe describe the sister Republic of Zambia as posing a security threat to Zimbabwe or as a client state of any power, including America.
In view of the abundant malice and the sheer recklessness in the NewsDay story, the Office of the President and Cabinet demands that the Editor of the offending publication unconditionally retracts the misleading story without any delay.
Section 61 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe provides no refuge to publishers and vendors of falsehoods and malicious misrepresentations.
To that end, the Office of the President and Cabinet reserves the right to seek repair, and to ensure enforcement of professional standards in newsrooms and in publications where these fall short.

Mnangagwa Threatens NewsDay Over "US Scoffs At ED" Report

Zambia’s Foreign Minister, Mulambo Haimbe, has called on the Southern African Development Community (SADC) and the African Union (AU) to address Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s recent comments made during a visit to Russia.
During a meeting with Russian leader Vladimir Putin at Konstantino Palace ahead of the 27th St Petersburg International Economic Forum recently, Mnangagwa claimed Zambia and Malawi have accepted the West’s alleged machinations to isolate Zimbabwe.
He also accused Zambia of allowing the United States of America to consolidate its military presence in the country.
Speaking in the Zambian Parliament yesterday, Haimbe said Mnangagwa’s comments were an “unwarranted attack on Zambia’s sovereignty.” He said:

The statements made by President Mnangagwa are not only baseless but also damaging to the spirit of unity and mutual respect that underpins our regional cooperation.
We call upon SADC and the AU to address this matter decisively and conclusively to preserve the integrity of our regional partnerships.

Some Zimbabwean government officials say the presence of a United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) office in Lusaka threatens regional peace and stability.
However, Haimbe, in his address in Parliament, said the AFRICOM office in Lusaka is part of a broader initiative to enhance regional security cooperation and capacity-building. He said:

The AFRICOM office is aimed at strengthening our security infrastructure and fostering greater cooperation in combating transnational threats.
It should not be viewed as a security risk but rather as a testament to our commitment to regional peace and stability.

According to a transcript of the meeting between the Zimbabwean and Russian leaders posted on the Kremlin’s official website, Mnangagwa told Putin that the West has abandoned Zimbabwe “making us feel lonely”. He said:

The Zambian government is engaging Zimbabwe following remarks by President Emmerson Mnangagwa that the United States is consolidating its military strength in Zambia to isolate Zimbabwe.
During a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday in St Petersburg on the sidelines of an investment summit, Mnangagwa sought assistance for “defence and food security” from Russia, saying the United States is “consolidating its power” in Zambia through increased security and financial aid.
In an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200028086/zambia-to-engage-harare-over-eds-remarks">NewsDay</a> on Sunday, Zambia’s Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa said that the country’s Foreign Affairs Ministry was engaging Zimbabwean authorities. He said:

We cannot go to the West; we have to come here because the West would want to see us down. They support our neighbours, Zambia and Malawi, very heavily.
But in spite of that, Zimbabwe’s economic growth is the fastest growing economy in the region, in spite of us being isolated by the Americans.

Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba said the assumption from the Zimbabwe delegation was that his conversation with Putin was private. 
Since coming to power, Zambia’s current President, Hakainde Hichilema has strengthened ties with the United States of America.
This closer relationship contrasts sharply with the strained US-Zimbabwe relations, with several Zimbabwean government officials including Mnangagwa and his wife Auxillia under sanctions.
Mnangagwa’s support for former Zambian president Edgar Lungu, succeeded by Hichilema, has also increased tensions between the two countries.
Lungu’s presidency was marred by accusations of authoritarianism and economic mismanagement.
Hichilema, a reformist leader with strong international support, is close to opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, whom the Zambian leader invited to his inauguration in 2021.
The animosity between Hichilema and Mnangagwa has also played out in SADC despite the two leaders appearing friendly in public.
Former Zambian vice president Nevers Mumba, leading the SADC electoral observation mission to Zimbabwe, issued a critical report on Zimbabwe’s August 2023 elections.
The report highlighted irregularities and questioned the legitimacy of Mnangagwa and ZANU PF’s victory, adding to the diplomatic tension.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Charamba threatened Hichilema with unspecified action.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter) Charamba <a href="https://x.com/GeorgeCharamba2/status/1799711724708515977">captioned a picture</a> of Hichilema at a rally and a screenshot of a 14 December 2022 post by a member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, with the words:

The member of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, whose post was captioned by Charamba in his rant had tweeted:

Zimbabwe is assuming the chairmanship of SADC in August, to be marked by a summit in Harare, where Mnangagwa will come face-to-face with Hichilema.

Zambia To Engage Zimbabwe Over Mnangagwa's Remarks In Russia

President Emmerson Mnangagwa expressed concern to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin regarding the preferential treatment Western nations give to Zambia through military and financial aid.
Mnangagwa, who is set to take over the SADC chairmanship this year, insinuated that Zambia is a Western puppet which Moscow must combat.
In a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Konstantinosky Palace in the Petrodvorets district of St. Petersburg, Strelna village, two days ago, at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum in Russia, Mnangagwa said the United States of America is consolidating its power in Zambia to isolate Zimbabwe. He said:

You see, the West has just begun consolidating its power in Zambia, our next neighbour. You know, there was a time when Zambia and Zimbabwe were one; it was called Northern and Southern Rhodesia.
It was made by the British, but they are now separate. And the Americans are consolidating their power in that country, both in terms of security and in terms of financial support to Zambia to make sure that we feel lonely.
But that will not change us, because we have taken a course as a people that we feel we want to be independent and we will choose our friends ourselves.
And besides, we are independent today because most of us in the leadership trained here during our war of liberation.
We got our independence because we are supported by you here, and we don’t forget that history, and you don’t forget about us.

Mnangagwa’s remarks have sparked debate on social media as they expose Harare’s uneasiness over her neighbour’s choice of friends.

A Zambian diplomat based in Harare told The NewsHawks:
That was reckless by President Mnangagwa. Zimbabwe and Zambia are neighbours with a close history as he said himself, dating back to the federation days.
Besides, he grew up in Zambia; to all intents and purposes he is also Zambian. So how can he talk toxic stuff like that as if he is an irresponsible opposition leader. Moreover, in a foreign country, in far-flung Russia.
This will unnecessarily stoke diplomatic tensions between Harare and Lusaka, given the dispute over the Zimbabwean elections last year and the coming SADC summit.

Meanwhile, presidential spokesperson George Charamba suggested that video footage of Mnangagwa’s meeting with Putin was leaked. 
Responding to an X (formerly Twitter) user who had queried why Mnangagwa made the remarks about Zambia in public, suggesting that some in his inner circle “are deliberately setting him up”, Charamba said:

In April last 2023, the US Africa Command (Africom) announced it was setting up an office in Zambia. Africom has bases across Africa.
Zambia and many other African countries are close to the US and other Western democracies, while some states like Zimbabwe and South Africa are allies of China and Russia which are under authoritarian governments.

Mnangagwa Reveals Uneasiness Over American Presence In Zambia During Meeting With Putin

Zambia’s Kwacha is Africa’s best-performing currency against the United States dollar so far this year after the Bank of Zambia (central bank) sharply tightened monetary policy.
As reported by <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/zambias-kwacha-is-africas-best-performing-currency-in-2024/">ZimLive</a>, the Kwacha has rallied 13.8% to 22.8 against the US dollar in 2024, according to LSEG data.
This came after the Bank of Zambia raised commercial banks’ reserve ratios and then hiked interest rates earlier this month, in a bid to reverse a decline in the currency that had pushed up inflation.
Danny Greef, Co-Head of Africa at research firm ETM Analytics, said “The Kwacha’s performance this year has been remarkable”.
Analysts said the Kwacha would strengthen sustainably only if the country attracts more foreign investment.
Zambian officials have blamed the country’s stalled debt restructuring, now in its fourth year, for preventing overseas investment and weakening the Kwacha.
However, copper production, Zambia’s major foreign exchange earner, has also fallen despite government efforts to boost the sector.
Speaking at a public forum last week on Tuesday, Bank of Zambia governor Denny Kalyalya said:

The measures that we have taken… are meant to stem some of the demand, which we thought was excessive as we anticipate supply, which mainly comes from the mining sector.

The Kwacha weakened slightly last week from 22.5 to $1 but was still more than 20% stronger than the record low of 27.23 reached on February 6.

Zambia’s Kwacha Is The Best Performing Currency In Africa In 2024

Morocco, a strong contender in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has been eliminated from the tournament in the last-16 stage with a 2-0 loss to South Africa. Goals from Evidence Makgopa and Teboho Mokoena secured South Africa’s place in the quarter-finals, while Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi missed a late penalty. This follows the exit of another tournament favourite, Senegal, who were defeated on penalties by the Ivory Coast. Egypt, the runners-up from the previous AFCON, were also eliminated in the last-16 stage after a penalty shootout loss to DR Congo.
South Africa took the lead in the 57th minute with Makgopa’s goal. Morocco had a chance to equalise in the 84th minute when Ayoub El Kaabi’s shot hit the arm of defender Mothobi Mvala, resulting in a penalty awarded after a VAR review. However, Hakimi’s penalty kick hit the crossbar, denying Morocco the opportunity to level the score. Later in the match, Morocco’s Sofyan Amrabat received a second yellow card, which was upgraded to a straight red card after a VAR review. This left Morocco with ten men on the field. Mokoena then scored from the resulting free-kick, sealing South Africa’s victory.
Morocco had previously reached the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, an impressive feat which made them the first African team to achieve such a milestone. However, their journey in this year’s AFCON has come to an early end. Coach Walid Regragui expressed regret over missed chances, acknowledging that at this level of competition, any wasted opportunity can result in immediate punishment.
South Africa was being considered underdogs before the match. Their victory surprised many considering their poor start to the tournament. Notably, African football icon <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2024/01/17/samuel-etoo-baffled-by-south-africas-performance-at-afcon/">Samuel Eto’o expressed frustration</a> over South Africa’s initial performances, believing that the nation possesses enough resources to support football development. South Africa Shocks Morocco With 2-0 Upset To Reach AFCON Quarter-finals

Zambia’s Foreign Minister Stanley Kakubo (43) resigned on Tuesday, 26 December, following social media outcry about alleged dealings with a Chinese businessman.
The announcement was made by the President’s Office, hours after a social media frenzy triggered by a video showing individuals counting substantial sums of cash.
An image of a signed handwritten note, dated 08 July 2022, was also put online.
The note named a Chinese mining firm and a Zambian mining firm and said they had “exchanged $100 000.” The names of Kakubo and a Mr. Zang were on the note.
In <a href="https://www.znbc.co.zm/news/stanley-kakubo-resigns/">a statement</a>, President Hakainde Hichilema’s office said he had accepted Kakubo’s resignation.
It gave no reason for the resignation but added: “The president acknowledges the commendable work and leadership” of Kakubo in the government.
Kakubo, who had been Foreign Minister since September 2021, said in a letter he was resigning because of “malicious claims over a business transaction between my private family business and our business partner with whom we still have good relations.” He added:

Chinese companies have invested heavily in the Zambian mining industry, a bedrock of the southern African nation’s economy. The East Asian economic powerhouse is a major importer of Zambian copper.
The Chinese embassy said in 2022 that more than 600 Chinese businesses had invested more than US$3 billion in Zambia.
China has also been a major player in international efforts to restructure Zambia’s foreign debt after the southern African country defaulted on its sovereign debt in 2020 as the COVID-19 crisis grew.

Zambia’s Foreign Minister Resigns Amid Outcry Over Chinese Business Dealings

Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema has pardoned 588 inmates in various prisons across the country, <a href="https://www.africanews.com/2023/12/25/zambia-president-hakainde-hichilema-pardons-588-prisoners/">reported africanews</a>.
Zambia’s Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Jack Mwiimbu said that the freed prisoners include 11 elderly and one mother with a baby.
Addressing journalists in the capital Lusaka on Sunday, Mwiimbu said the life sentence of an inmate was commuted to 35 years while two inmates on death row had their sentences commuted to life.
Article 97 of the Zambian Constitution confers authority on the president to pardon or substitute punishments imposed on convicted persons.
Mwiimbu said that the pardoned inmates had demonstrated good conduct after undergoing rehabilitation processes that will enable them to integrate well into society.
President Hichilema’s decision was met with praise, particularly from human rights organisations.
In May 2023, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa was criticised by rights groups after he paroled thousands of prisoners, including dangerous convicted rapists.
<a href="https://www.voanews.com/a/mass-pardon-in-zimbabwe-frees-convicted-rapists-stirs-uproar-/7111090.html">VOA News</a> cited lawyers and rights groups as saying those convicted of rape should not have been released as their offences are classified as “specified,” which do not qualify for presidential pardons.

Zimbabwean Embassy Updating Database Of Zimbabwean Students Studying In Zambia

The United Nations has given permission to Zambia and Zimbabwe to construct a $5 billion hydropower dam near Victoria Falls. The dam, called the Batoka Gorge project, will have a capacity of 2,400 megawatts and is located 47 kilometres away from the famous waterfall.
Environmentalists have expressed concerns about the project, as it may affect the natural beauty of Victoria Falls, which is a popular tourist attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. However, the authority overseeing the dam’s construction has stated that it has received clearance from the UN agency to proceed with the project. Munyaradzi Munodawafa, chief executive officer of the Zambezi River Authority, told Bloomberg in an interview that Unesco:

sent inspectors in 2022 after complaints by some environmentalists that the Batoka project was going to affect the Victoria Falls.

During a meeting of the World Heritage Committee, the inspectors reviewed reports and presentations related to the Batoka Gorge project. Munodawafa stated that the inspectors agreed that the project could proceed based on the information provided.
The construction of the Batoka Gorge project, which includes a high wall and power plants, was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and funding concerns. However, it is now set to proceed. The project is led by General Electric Co. and China’s Power Construction Corp. Both Zambia and Zimbabwe, who already share another hydropower facility called Kariba, have faced challenges in meeting their power needs. The African Development Bank is arranging financing for the project, which has been designed to minimize its impact on Victoria Falls.
However, tensions between Zambia and Zimbabwe still exist regarding the project. Zambia’s energy minister, Peter Kapala, announced in June plans to terminate the agreement with General Electric (GE) and Power Construction due to cost concerns and the possibility of a smaller plant being more suitable. Additionally, the rehabilitation of the plunge pool beneath the Kariba Dam, the largest man-made reservoir, is expected to be finished by early 2025. The African Development Bank (AfDB) is also providing advice for the Mphanda Nkuwa hydropower project in Mozambique, which has a cost of $4.5 billion and a capacity of 1,500 megawatts.

United Nations Permits Zimbabwe & Zambia To Construct A $5 Billion Hydropower Dam Near Victoria Falls

Zimbabwean-born South African businessman Sikhumbuzo Manduna has shared the challenges he faced while traveling from Zimbabwe to Zambia.
Manduna, who was driving his Ford Ranger, had obtained all the necessary documents to travel through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia. However, when he reached the border at Chirundu, he faced extensive questioning from a border official who suspected the car might be stolen. After a three-hour wait, the official called the police from Lusaka, who arrived and arrested Manduna.
He said despite providing all the required paperwork, including proof of purchase through Capitec Bank, insurance records, and company details, the police refused to release him. Interpol was even involved, confirming that the car was not stolen. Manduna was detained for a total of seven days, during which he believed that the police were seeking a bribe. Despite his attempts to cooperate and provide all necessary evidence, the release of his car was delayed.
Manduna said he embarked on a business trip from Johannesburg to Zimbabwe and then to Zambia, driving his Ford Ranger purchased through Capitec Bank. He had all the necessary documents and permission to travel across multiple countries. However, at the Chirundu border, the border official subjected him to extensive questioning about the car’s ownership and potential theft. After a three-hour wait, Manduna was called into the office only to face another ordeal—finding out that the official had called the police from Lusaka during that time to detain him. He narrated:

As we were arguing on the issue after I had presented my passport, car documents, bank papers, insurance records and company details since the vehicle was registered under my company, police arrived in style with blue lights in a Madza BT50; five police officers, three armed with AK-47 assault rifles. The customs officer pointed at me and said that is the guy claiming to be the car owner. I was shocked by what subsequently followed. Police pounced on me and said I was under arrest. I demanded that on top of the papers I had presented, I should be allowed to call my insurance firm and the agent I deal with, which I did. The insurance explained that the car was legitimately bought through Capitec and they had all the papers, which they were ready to send to the border officials if needs be. All that was rejected.
Police then told me they were now taking me to Lusaka to deal with the matter because they suspected the car was stolen even when all documents showed that assumption was false. They drove me in their car as they refused me to even sit in my own car. When we got to Lusaka Central Police Station, I was told the boss named Chomba wanted to see me but it could only be the following day which meant I had to be detained in cells, which they did. I was removed from the cells the following day to see the said boss around 9:30am.
Upon his arrival, he was confrontational; he seized my car keys and the car itself, demanding that I should prove the vehicle was mine. I was told the arresting officer was Detective Constable Mthengwa. So we had to restart the process of providing documents all over again. I gave them all the documents, called my insurance firm and showed them emails between the bank and myself, proving that the car was bought through the bank which had to approve my driving of the vehicle outside South Africa into Zimbabwe, then Zambia.
Interpol was also brought into the fray. On Monday, 28 August, Captain Pieter De Villiers sent an email to Lusaka Central Police Station saying the car was not stolen. Remember I had been in detention for five days at that point without a charge. Arbitrary detention. Just imagine the pressure and anger.

De Villiers urgently informed the Lusaka police that Manduna had been arrested for allegedly possessing a stolen car. He provided the details of the Ford Ranger and confirmed that it was not reported as stolen in South Africa. De Villiers requested the Zambian police to help Manduna retrieve his car, stating that it was owned by Capitec, and the bank had approved its use outside South Africa during the specified dates.
The car involved in the incident is registered under Manduna’s company, Andiswa Phakade (Pty) Ltd, with an address in Johannesburg. Despite providing all necessary documents, including support from his insurance company and Interpol, Zambian police detained Manduna for seven days. Manduna believed that the police were demanding a bribe, as their behavior suggested. He provided extensive documentation, such as his passport, ID, driver’s license, vehicle registration papers, and a letter of authority from the bank. Despite all evidence proving the legitimacy of the car, the police continued to detain him.

Zimbabwean-born South African businessman Narrates His Difficult Journey To Zambia

A Zimbabwean student, Mike Lungu, who had been detained in Zambia for overstaying his visa, has been released after Good Samaritans raised the US$500 fine.
He was detained by immigration officials for overstaying in the neighbouring country.
Lungu completed his A Levels in nine months, instead of the regular two years, and was studying law at the University of Zimbabwe.
He appealed for financial help before being released with the support of Good Samaritans.
Lungu’s aunt, Samantha Simasiku, who is based in Zambia, was quoted by <a href="https://www.hmetro.co.zw/genius-student-released-in-zambia/">H-Metro</a> as saying that the young man was released with the support of well-wishers. She said:

l have been pushing for Mike to be released prayerfully. Many thanks to all the well-wishers and helpers who carried the burden off my shoulders and came through for the young man, God bless you.

Lungu entered Zambia on March 29 and got a 30-day non-extendable business visitor.
His visa expired on April 28 but he stayed up to September 5.
Lungu was arrested at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport as he sought to leave the country and travel back to Zimbabwe.
He had just completed short courses in Zambia.
He was ordered to pay a fine of US$500 or risk being jailed before being deported.
A recent report claimed that an estimated 10 000 young Zimbabweans are reportedly enrolled at Zambian colleges and universities.
Parents and students who spoke to <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/10-000-zimbabwe-students-flock-to-zambia/">The Mirror</a> claimed that Zambian universities are generally cheaper and fees are paid in the local currency which is stable, unlike the Zimbabwe dollar.
In Zambia, fees start from as little as $300 per semester and the quality of education on offer is reported to be higher than what is offered in Zimbabwe.

"Genius" Zimbabwean Student Arrested For Overstaying In Zambia Freed

ZANU PF says there is no diplomatic falling out between Zimbabwe and Zambia following media reports that relations between the two southern African neighbours have become strained.
Relations between Harare and Lusaka reportedly soured after the SADC Elections Observer Mission (SEOM), which was headed by former Zambian Vice President Nevers Mumba, released a damning report denouncing Zimbabwe’s 23 August 2023 Harmonised Elections.
Speaking at a post-Politburo media briefing in Harare on Friday night, ZANU PF Secretary for Information and Publicity, Christopher Mutsvangwa, said there was no tension between Zimbabwe and Zambia. He said:

We have no quarrels with Zambia; it is a sister Republic of Zimbabwe. The people of Zambia love us, we also love them.
Our relations will always subsist on that camaraderie, neighbourliness; on that spirit of sacrifice, which made it possible for us to get our independence.
We are confident that we will continue to maintain our relations with Zambia, we are neighbours.
You can choose your friend but you can’t choose your neighbour.

Earlier this week, ZANU PF Secretary for Finance Patrick Chinamasa dismissed claims he had a hand in the death of the late former Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa.
Chinamasa made the comments in response to protests by President Hichilema Hakainde’s United Party for National Development (UPND) supporters who accused the ZANU PF Treasurer and one Rutendo Matinyarare of planning to kill Hichilema.
The demonstrations were held at the re-opening of the Kongola copper mines in Chingola and Chililabombwe in the Copper Belt province.
But in a statement posted on social media site X, Chinamasa denied the allegations, saying they “are false, malicious, and highly defamatory.” He added:

No Dispute Between Zimbabwe, Zambia - ZANU PF

An estimated 10 000 young Zimbabweans are reportedly enrolled at Zambian colleges and universities.
Parents and students who spoke to <a href="https://masvingomirror.com/10-000-zimbabwe-students-flock-to-zambia/">The Mirror</a> claimed that Zambian universities are generally cheaper and fees are paid in the local currency which is stable, unlike the Zimbabwe dollar.
In Zambia, fees start from as little as $300 per semester and the quality of education on offer is reported to be higher than what is offered in Zimbabwe.
Moreover, some students said Zimbabwean universities’s primary focus is no longer on providing quality education but on making money.
An engineering student left a local State university in the second year and went to Zambia saying one can finish a degree programme in Zimbabwe without ever setting foot in a workshop.
The Mirror established that Lusaka Health Institute alone has an estimated 123 first, second and third-year nursing students.
Joseph Mukina, an agent who processes applications for Zimbabwean students, said that there are at least 200 Zimbabwean students in each of the 58 institutes of higher learning that he deals with.
This brings the total number of Zimbabwean students in the country to over 11 000.
The Mirror also reported a source at Chirundu Border Post as saying “the flood” of Zimbabwean students crossing into Zambia at the start of new semesters cannot be ignored anymore.
However, the Minister of Higher Education, Amon Murwira said he saw nothing wrong with Zimbabweans going to Zambia to further their education. Said Murwira:

People would want to twist the story to suit their narrative, but the truth is that everyone has his own choice.
We have a lot of Zimbabweans studying in China and other countries and we also have a lot of Zambians in our institutions of higher learning.

Meanwhile, Mukina said some of the popular institutions are Africa University, Cavendish University (Lusaka), Central African Baptist University, Chreso University, Copperstone University, Eden University, Gideon Robert University, Information and Communications University (ICU), Lusaka Apex Medical University, Management College of Southern Africa (MANCOSA) (Lusaka), Rusangu University, South Valley University, St. Bonaventure University, Texila American University Zambia, UNICAF University, University of Lusaka, Victoria Falls University of Technology (VFU), Zambia Catholic University and Zambian Open University
He also claimed he processes hundreds of applications every month from Zimbabweans seeking enrolment at Zambian colleges.

10 000 Zimbabwean Students Migrate To Zambia

The Government of Zimbabwe has rejected claims of a diplomatic fall-out with neighbouring Zambia after the SADC Election Observer Mission (SEOM), which was headed by former Zambian vice president Nevers Mumba, released a damning report on Zimbabwe’s 2023 Harmonised Elections.
Both Government officials and ZANU PF politicians have discredited the SEOM report and singled out Mumba for criticism.
ZANU PF has accused Mumba and Zambian leader and SADC Troika chairperson Hakainde Hichilema, of fronting Western powers in pushing for regime change in Zimbabwe.
Thousands of Zambians marched on the streets of Ndola, Zambia’s third largest city in Copperbelt province on Monday, in protest against remarks made by ZANU PF secretary for finance, Patrick Chinamasa.
The protesters accused Chinamasa of having confessed that he killed Zambian leader Levy Mwanawasa, who died of an ailment in 2008, and also of threatening the life of Hichilema.
However, Zimbabwe’s Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson Livit Mugejo was quoted by <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/zimbabwe-denies-tiff-with-zambia-after-damning-sadc-observer-mission-report/">ZimLive</a> as saying relations between the two neighbouring countries were cordial. He said:

Kindly note that diplomacy is not done through the press and we will not comment on public statements.
There are proper diplomatic channels we communicate with Zambia and any other state.
And, as far as we are concerned, we are not aware of any collapsed relations.

Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services Ministry’s secretary, Nick Mangwana claimed there was a plot within SADC to push for the convening of an extra-ordinary summit on Zimbabwe.
He did not mention Zambia by name, but international relations observers concluded that he indeed implied that Zambia was behind the plot.

Zimbabwe Denies Claims Of A Diplomatic Tiff With Zambia

The Zambian government has prevented former President Edgar Lungu from traveling to South Africa for a medical review.
According to a letter dated 07 September 2023, the Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet, Oliver Kalabo informed Lungu that he had not been granted permission to travel to SA. Reads the letter in part:

Reference is made to a letter dated 16 August 2023 on the above subject.
I wish to advise that authority has not been granted for you, Your Excellency, to travel to South Africa for medical review.
</blockquote>
Zambia’s President, Hakainde Hichilema, who chairs the SADC Troika, snubbed President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s inauguration on 04 September.
The ZANU PF-led government then hastily invited Lungu to attend the ceremony, a move that some commentators said was done to “spite” Hichilema.
On 4 September, Hichilema castigated alleged coup plotters who he claimed were planning to undermine Zambia’s democracy and stability. He said:

To colleagues that think, we are timid by being kind and that they can break the laws and entertain thoughts of illegal takeover of government including undemocratic coup d’état… we are coming for you.
</blockquote>
Since gaining independence from Britain in 1964, Zambia has never experienced military rule, though there have been several unsuccessful coup attempts.
Commenting on the decision by the Zambian government to block Lungu from travelling to South Africa, Zambian political activist, Joseph Kalimbwe said:

Edgar Lungu has been denied access to leave the country to go seek medical review in South Africa. I support the action. Lungu was President, he should have improved the local hospitals and therefore must go to the same hospitals Zambians go to !!!
I see some people in Southern Africa are unhappy with the photo (of the letter blocking Lungu from travelling to SA) I shared.
African leaders don’t improve hospitals in their own countries &amp; want to be treated abroad.
Lungu was President of Zambia, he talks a lot of the hospitals he built, he must go &amp; be treated in one of them !!
I doubt if Lungu is genuinely unwell or that he needs a medical review. He just wants to leave the country and go meet his friends – plot.
Also, why does he want to go to South Africa &amp; not Zimbabwe? I thought he said all is well in Zim. He must go get treated at Parirenyatwa !!!

Zambian Govt Blocks Former President Lungu From Travelling To South Africa

Zambia claimed a record seventh COSAFA Cup title on Saturday after beating Lesotho 1-0 in the tournament final, played at the King Zwelithini Stadium.
Chipolopolo have now won more COSAFA titles than Zimbabwe (6) after successfully defending the title they won last year.
The only goal of the match was scored by striker Moyela Libamba in the second half.
Zimbabwe missed the last two editions of the annual COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup after the country was suspended from international football by FIFA.
FIFA suspended Zimbabwe for “third-party interference” in February 2022 after the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) suspended the ZIFA board.
The suspension was lifted last week, with FIFA appointing a four-member normalisation committee that will be in charge of ZIFA until June 2024, at the latest.

Zambia Lift Record Seventh COSAFA Cup Title

Zimbabwean vendors in Victoria Falls have urged the local authority to ensure that hawkers from Zambia respect the city’s by-laws.
A report by the <a href="https://globalpressjournal.com/africa/zimbabwe/return-zambian-vendors-rattles-merchants-victoria-falls/">Global Press Journal</a> indicates that Zambian vendors have taken advantage of the reopening of the Zimbabwe-Zambia border to travel to Victoria Falls to sell fruits and vegetables.
The border was closed in 2020 as a precautionary measure to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
The Zambian vendors, popularly known as omzanga, a Nyanja term meaning “friend,” cross the Victoria Falls Bridge en route to Zimbabwe every morning to sell vegetables.
A local vendor, Sikhulile Ngwenya who has been in the business for 10 years, said she feels a constant threat and uncertainty looming over her livelihood.
The Zambian vendors reportedly sell their fruits and vegetables and low prices because they source their products from farms that are close to the border with Zimbabwe.
Their Zimbabwean counterparts are however, forced to sell at higher prices as they source their produce from places like Lupane, 264 kilometers (164 miles) away; Bulawayo, 435 kilometers (270 miles) away; and sometimes as far as Harare, 874 kilometers (543 miles) away.
Local vendors also must operate from their designated spots in the markets, and pay rentals to the Victoria Falls City Council, while the Zambian vendors can move door to door.
Ngwenya said she pays US$16 a month to the council. She said during the first lockdown, she made US$15 to US$25 a day, but now she makes US$10 to US$15 a day. Ngwenya said:

Because vendors sell door to door, our customers no longer visit the market.
This is now a threat to our livelihoods as we no longer sell much because residents would rather wait for the Zambian vendors sitting in their homes.

Grace Shoko, who is the vice chairperson of the Zambezi Informal Cross Border Traders Association (ZICBTA) accused Zambian vendors of “stealing” their customers.
ZICBTA was founded in late 2021 in Victoria Falls to resolve issues between local and Zambian traders.
Naomi, a Zambian vendor, said she prefers vending in Zimbabwe because she makes more money than when selling in Zambia because in Zimbabwe she sells in United State dollars.
She said when she converts her USD to Zambian kwacha back in her country, she gets a substantial amount.
Mercy Mushare, a member of the Mkhosana vendors association, said they have engaged the local authority to put in place bylaws that protect local vendors. She said:

We are not saying Zambians should not come and sell, but they should abide by the same bylaws which we abide by. They should not be at an advantage over locals.
</blockquote>
Victoria Falls residents, however, fear that strict action against Zambian vendors might eventually hurt the common Zimbabwean as local vendors will most likely increase prices to pandemic levels.

Vendors In Victoria Falls Call For Strict Action Against Zambians

Zambia’s power utility, the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (ZESCO) has announced the end of load shedding in the country.
The <a href="https://www.znbc.co.zm/news/zesco-declares-end-to-load-shedding/">Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation</a> (ZNBC) cited ZESCO Managing Director Victor Mapani as saying the country will no longer experience load-shedding.
He said households and companies countrywide will now enjoy 24 hours of power supply without any disruptions.
Mapani said this comes after ZESCO restored and upgraded power generation at various power stations in the country.
Addressing a media briefing in Lusaka on Thursday, Mapani said ZESCO has revamped the Victoria Falls power station which is currently feeding about 20 Megawatts into the National Grid.
He said ZESCO has also upgraded power generation at Kafue Gorge Upper and Lower Power Stations by over 150 megawatts.
He also disclosed that ZESCO will soon increase power generation at Lake Kariba from the current 250 megawatts to 350 due to the increase in water levels in the Kariba Dam.
Zambia also plans to begin the importation of about 120 megawatts from Mozambique, Mapani further revealed.
Last month ZESCO <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zambias-power-utility-increases-daily-load-shedding-hours-to-12/">announced increased hours of load shedding to twelve (12) hours daily</a> with effect from 4 January 2023.

Zambia's Power Utility Declares End To Load Shedding

Zambia’s State-owned power utility ZESCO Limited has increased hours of load shedding to twelve (12) hours daily with effect from 4 January 2023.
In a statement, ZESCO said the development was in response to a drastic reduction in available water in the Kariba reservoir for electricity generation as well as routine annual maintenance at a smaller power station. Reads the statement:

ZESCO Limited will with effect from Wednesday, 4 January 2023 adjust the hours of load shedding to twelve (12) hours daily, until further notice.
The Corporation’s ability to meet power demand remains constrained by the drastic reduction in available water in the Kariba reservoir for electricity generation at Kariba North Bank Power Station.
At present, the power station’s generating capacity has been reduced from its installed 1080MegaWatts (MW) to below 400MW.
Furthermore, the 150MW generator outage at Maamba Collieries Limited Power Plant for routine annual maintenance from 4 January until 20 January 2023 has exacerbated the situation.
ZESCO deeply regrets the inconvenience caused.

Zambia's Power Utility Increases Daily Load Shedding Hours to 12

Amnesty International (AI) has welcomed the abolishment of the death penalty in Zambia.
Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema on Friday 23 December 2022 announced that he had assented to a law banning the death penalty and the offence of criminal defamation of the president.
Responding to this development, Amnesty International’s Regional Director for East and Southern Africa, Tigere Chagutah said:

Amnesty International Welcomes Abolishment Of Death Penalty In Zambia

The president of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, Friday assented to the Penal Code Amendment Bill Number 25 of 2022 which abolishes the Death Penalty and the Criminal Defamation of the President provisions in the Penal Code.
The two penalties have been in Zambian laws since the pre-independence era.
The president’s office confirmed the development in a statement seen by Pindula News.
Hichilema also posted on Twitter on Friday saying he kept the promise to abolish the laws that inhibit democracy. He said:

Today we assented to Penal Code (Amendment) Bill number 25 of 2022, abolishing the death penalty in #Zambia &amp; the offence of Criminal Defamation of the President. Promised to amend laws that inhibit democracy, human rights, good governance &amp; basic freedoms.

The death penalty was a mandatory sentence for people convicted of capital offences while Defamation of the President had seen many people sentenced to jail terms for insulting the President using various platforms.
There have been reports that more people have been arrested and jailed for defamation of the president in Hichilema’s first year than were under six years of Lungu. 
In September this year, Dr Sishuwa Sishuwa, a Lecturer in Modern History at the University of Zambia, said on average, a Zambian is jailed every month for insulting President Hichilema. 
He said all these arrests and jailings of Hichilema’s critics were happening because the legal architecture that enabled the authoritarian tendencies of Lungu and previous leaders remained unchanged under Hichilema. 
There are some who believe the death penalty is appropriate for some crimes. One commentator suggested that it wouldn’t be fair for “convicted murderers to serve out the rest of their life at the expense of taxpayers is human rights? What about the human rights of the victims and their families?” 
Proponents of the abolishment of the death penalty argue that many people are wrongfully convicted and it sometimes takes years to prove one’s innocence and it would be unfair to be found innocent when one has been killed already.

Zambia: Hakainde Hichilema Abolishes Death Penalty, Criminal Defamation Of The President

Zambian police say they will increase checks of vehicles at the country’s borders following the discovery over the weekend of the bodies of 27 Ethiopian migrants.
The men, all aged between 20 and 38, were found dumped by the side of the road on the outskirts of the Zambian capital, Lusaka, according to BBC News. 
They were found dumped in a farming area on the outskirts of the capital after they died from suspected hunger and exhaustion.
A sole survivor was found alive in the early hours of Sunday morning and rushed to a Lusaka hospital for treatment, while the dead were transported to the mortuary for identification and post-mortems to determine the exact cause of death.
Preliminary police investigations showed the victims were all males aged between 20 and 38 and had been dumped along a road by unknown people, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/africa/twenty-seven-men-believed-be-ethiopian-migrants-found-dead-along-road-zambia-2022-12-11/">Reuters</a> reported citing a statement by Zambian police spokesperson Danny Mwale. He is quoted as saying:

Police and other security wings have since instituted investigations into the matter.

Ethiopian migrants often use Zambia when travelling to countries such as South Africa, though reports of deaths in transit there are rare.
They are thought to have suffocated whilst trying to reach South Africa.
In October, the bodies of 25 Ethiopians were discovered in neighbouring Malawi.
The United Nations says 12 000 migrants have been recorded as missing across Africa since 2014.
