ZAPU secretary-general Mthulisi Hanana says President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration is unforgiving and vindictive and has perpetuated the legacy left by his predecessor the late Robert Mugabe of holding grudges against opponents.
This comes after liberation icon and former Bulawayo Provincial Affairs Minister Eunice Sandi Moyo was denied national heroine status.
Sandi Moyo died at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo on Thursday last week after a long battle with hypertension, aged 78.
She was accorded a State-assisted funeral and was buried at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo on Wednesday this week.
Speaking at Sandi Moyo’s memorial service at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre before her burial, Hanana said Mnangagwa’s government is unforgiving, vindictive and anti-ZAPU just like the Mugabe regime. He said, as quoted by <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200027319/ed-unforgiving-vindictive-zapu">NewsDay</a>:

Unfortunately, our mother is being denied her rightful status simply because she held different views of the powers that be.
This proves beyond doubt that the so-called second republic is as unforgiving, vindictive and anti-ZAPU as the first republic. ZAPU veterans seem to be overlooked even where they dwarf those who overlook them.
I admired her determination to advance the cause of former ZAPU and ZIPRA, her desire for the development of our country and her patriotism.
She was clear that when they were young they fought for the country and my generation too must do the same.
In 2019, I spoke at the funeral of Dumiso Dabengwa [late ZAPU leader], after which she [Sandi Moyo] asked me to speak at her funeral.
The contribution of Sandi Moyo must never be allowed to be wished away by anyone for whatever reason. She worked for this country.
She walked in the footsteps of women revolutionaries like Amai Ruth Nyamurowa who was denied heroine status in the 1980s.
She followed the footsteps of Umama uThenjiwe Lesabe, who also, albeit being a nationalist, was denied heroine status.

Hanana queried why the likes of Border Gezi and musician Soul Jah Love were accorded heroes’ status by the ZANU PF-led government. He said:

Maybe it makes sense to you elders, but I represent the younger generation of ZAPU that refuses to see sense in such things.
We cannot continue to have our icons being disrespected like this. We cannot continue to thank the government for State assisted funerals as if that money is from ZANU PF while it is the country’s money and we must all benefit.

He also questioned why some ZAPU members were quiet when their former colleagues were not being accorded the honour they deserved. Said Hanana:

We ask ourselves those who were ZAPU why are they quiet while things go wrong? We are tired of hearing that Mnangagwa has said this or that.
Tell your father Mnangagwa that he is too bitter now. Why is our mother being denied the heroine status that she deserves?
Why are 5th Brigade commanders declared National Heroes and our mother who never fought her people, is not?

In 2016, Sandi Moyo fell out with ZANU PF after being accused of belonging to the faction led by the then-former Vice President Joice Mujuru. This faction was allegedly plotting to oust former President Robert Mugabe from power.
Her troubles continued when the ZANU PF Women’s League demanded her removal in 2017, alleging she had undermined of the authority of the then-First Lady Grace Mugabe.
Eventually, Sandi Moyo was dismissed from the party, and in January 2018, she lost her parliamentary seat due to her alleged links to the G40 faction.
In 2018, she became one of the founding members of the National Patriotic Front (NPF), a group formed by Mugabe loyalists after his ousting in a military coup in November.
ZAPU and ZANU were nationalist movements fighting for independence that were formed in 1961 and 1963, respectively.
The parties merged to form the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) in 1987 to end the Gukurahundi massacres.
However, some former ZAPU members, who were led by Dabengwa, withdrew from ZANU PF in the 2000s to restore ZAPU as a separate political entity.

Mnangagwa Unforgiving And Vindictive, Says ZAPU

The opposition ZAPU party has slammed the ZANU PF-led government for denying the late former Senator and Bulawayo Metropolitan Minister Eunice Sandi Moyo national heroine status.
Sandi Moyo died at the age of 78 on 16 May at Mater Dei Hospital in Bulawayo, where she was undergoing treatment for hypertension.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa granted her a state-assisted burial, rather than national heroine status.
Speaking at her memorial service at the Bulawayo Amphitheatre on Wednesday ahead of Moyo’s burial at the Lady Stanley Cemetery in the city, ZAPU Secretary General Mthulisi Hanana said the snub should be a signal for former ZAPU members in ZANU PF to return to the party. He said (via <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zapu-sg-decries-eunice-sandi-moyos-national-heroine-snub/">CITE</a>):

She was there in Zambia, at Lancaster House, she was there during Gukurahundi, she was there. She was in government all for what? I doubt that this is the Zimbabwe she envisaged.
This snub by the ZANU PF government makes our call, yokuthi bantwana bantwana wozani ekhaya (come back to ZAPU), more relevant.

Hanana said that Sandi Moyo should have been declared a national heroine given her track record in government and the ruling party, adding that once ZANU PF is removed from power, she will be accorded national heroine status.
Sandi Moyo’s uncle, Monti Malunguza representing the Masola Ndlovu family, said she deserved better recognition than a mere state-assisted funeral. He said:

We are also grateful to the government for according to her a state-assisted funeral, however, let me hasten and say we are a little bit disappointed because the role she played pre and post-independence deserved a better recognition than a mere state-assisted funeral.
We are aware of lesser individuals who have been accorded a higher role than her. Anyway, that doesn’t dilute the fact that she is a hero.
She is a hero, mainly throughout the breadth and length of this country, people accept that she played a role and we are grateful for that.
</blockquote>
He thanked the City of Bulawayo for giving her a place of burial at Lady Stanley Cemetery. Said Malunguza:

When (Minister of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development) Monica Mutsvanga came to pay her last respects last Saturday, she said Sandi Moyo moulded her. I know that the present-day politicians came through the hands.

ZAPU Criticises ZANU PF For Denying Eunice Sandi Moyo National Heroine Status

ZAPU has refuted the claims made by Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) activist Sengezo Tshabangu, who claimed to have engaged the party’s president, Sibangilizwe Nkomo, and his sister, Thandiwe Nkomo, in discussions about forming a Government of National Unity (GNU) with ZANU PF.
In a statement, ZAPU National Spokesperson, Richard Gandari, said Tshabangu made false claims on the VOA Studio 7 Ndebele bulletin which aired on 7 May 2024. Said Gandari:

The truth of the matter is that our President, Cde Sibangilizwe Nkomo, casually met Mr Tshabangu by chance, during Chief Dakamela’s traditional function in Nkayi on the 7th of April, 2024.
It was a mere handshake and photo opportunity at Mr Tshabangu’s request. Out of civil courtesy and ubuntu, President Nkomo obliged and spent at most a couple of minutes interacting with Mr Tshabangu.
Apart from cordial greetings and casual pleasantries, nothing of political substance was ever discussed. For the record, it was our President’s first time meeting the infamous Mr Tshabangu in person.

Gandari said his party does not want to be associated with Tshabangu’s “tattered brand”. He also suggested that CCC’s contested interim secretary general is mentally unstable. He said:
<blockquote>
Today, we find ourselves with the unenviable task of defending our good name from Mr Tshabangu’s tattered brand. Association with his acerbic name has badly affected the dead and the living in equal measure.
He is a radioactive entity, and unfortunately, hard to avoid during a public function. We believe Mr Tshabangu is a drowning man, desperate to clutch at any straws for personal survival and political relevance.
While we are not medically privy to the state of his mental faculties, it would be naïve to consider him stable, unless his mischief knows no bounds.
Furthermore, we are greatly appalled by the poor journalistic standard used by Studio 7’s Sithandekile Mhlanga, who gave wings to Mr Tshabangu’s flight of fancy.
Whether by mistake or design, Sithandekile casually stated that Sengezo Tshabangu held talks with senior ZANU PF officials before attaching a voice clip of Mr Tshabangu claiming to have talked with “Thandi and Bangilizwe Nkomo.’
This amounts to misinformation with the danger of misleading the public into believing that our ZAPU leader is a ZANU PF official.
We expect better standards and ethics from Studio 7, a respectable station that has given a voice to the voiceless masses of Zimbabwe at home and in the diaspora.

Tshabangu has been at the centre of controversy within the opposition political landscape of Zimbabwe. In October 2023, Tshabangu claimed to be the interim Secretary General of the CCC, a political movement then led by Nelson Chamisa.
He wrote letters to the Speaker of Parliament and the Minister of Local Government, purporting to recall several CCC MPs and councillors stating that the named individuals had ceased to be members of the CCC.
Among those recalled by Tshabangu included two Harare mayors, the Mayors of Norton and Masvingo and the chairperson of the Epworth Local Board.

ZAPU Refutes Tshabangu's Government Of National Unity Claims

The opposition ZAPU party has urged the government to declare the 2023/2024 farming season a national disaster due to the severe drought prevailing across the whole country.
ZAPU National Organiser, Ndodana Moyo, told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zapu-declare-farming-season-a-national-disaster/">CITE</a> that thousands of farmers have already lost their crops and livestock, adding that declaring the drought a national disaster will ensure that people receive aid on time. Said Moyo:
<blockquote>
I have been travelling to many rural areas and see that many families if not thousands, have lost their crops to the heat and lack of rain, not to mention the effect of drought on livestock as well. This means more people will face starvation.
I, therefore, implore the Government to declare this farming season a national disaster so that people receive the necessary interventions and aid on time.
If there is no or little rain, it’s obvious people will lose their crops, vegetables, and livestock.
This is why, as ZAPU, we are saying the farming season should be declared a national disaster because it’s affected by drought.
</blockquote>
ZAPU’s call comes after the President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, declared the ongoing drought in that country a national disaster and emergency.
Hichilema said Zambia had gone without rain for five weeks at a time when farmers needed it the most.
Meanwhile, in Zimbabwe, some areas last received effective rainfall in the second week of January.

Declare Farming Season A National Disaster - ZAPU

The opposition Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) party has questioned the ZANU PF-led government’s commitment to a genuine resolution of the Gukurahundi massacres.
This follows the exclusion of key stakeholders from taking part in planned hearings set to be rolled out in affected communities to resolve the Gukurahundi legacy.
Addressing the media on Friday, ZAPU president Sibangalizwe Nkomo said the perpetrator was in charge of the whole process while the primary target of the massacres was excluded. Said Nkomo (<a href="https://www.zimlive.com/zapu-protests-exclusion-from-gukurahundi-hearings-by-government/">via ZimLive</a>):
<blockquote>
Fellow Zimbabweans, we have witnessed an attempt by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to deceive our people into thinking that he sincerely wants to address the Gukurahundi genocide.
Our major discontentment is the fact that the perpetrator is not only in charge of the process but determines the terms of the whole process.
As if that is not enough, ZAPU, the primary target of the Gukurahundi military operation, has not been considered by the government.
We have clearly stated that any process that does not include us as victims is an exercise in futility.
</blockquote>
The Gukurahundi hearings will be led by traditional leaders in communities where the atrocities were committed.
However, little has been mentioned about restorative justice against the perpetrators. Said Nkomo:
<blockquote>
Compatriots, Gukurahundi affected our people in different ways. Those who lost loved ones need healing and closure. Those who were raped deserve healing. Many lost their properties and deserve compensation.
ZAPU and ZPRA also lost properties which are yet to be returned. ZAPU insists that the starting point in addressing Gukurahundi is making public the Chihambakwe report.
It is for this reason that we appeal to President Mnangagwa to halt the process and consult widely so that for once, he can do something that can outlive his chequered legacy.

Gukurahundi was the code name used during military operation in Matabeleland and Midlands provinces ostensibly to neutralise dissidents in the 1980s.
An estimated 20 000 civilians, according to independent estimates, were killed during the disturbances.
Meanwhile, Nkomo urged survivors to avoid exposing themselves to possible retribution by the state through certain utterances during the hearings.

ZAPU Demands Inclusion In Gukurahundi Hearings

According to Sengezo Tshabangu, politicians from Harare and or Mashonaland do not entertain the idea of a united Matabeleland as they view it as a security threat. He claims to have seen this in the ruling ZANU PF and experienced this under the leadership of Morgan Tsvangirai, the late founding leader of the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC). He told Zenzele Ndebele during an interview:

There is nobody from that end who wants a united Matabeleland. A united Matabeleland is a security threat. A united Matabeleland gives them sleepless nights. A united Matabeleland is a threat to the establishment itself. It is now being transmitted to the opposition politics. I don’t think President Emmerson Mnangagwa would want a united Matabeleland. Morgan Tsvangirai was never at one given time at ease with a united Matabeleland so is Nelson Chamisa, he is scared of a united Matabeleland.

This neglect of Matabeleland provinces by political elites is not a new issue. It is often alleged that these regions are only considered during election periods. Political analysts often say the ruling party, ZANU PF, is particularly fearful of a united Matabeleland due to the historical event known as Gukurahundi. This violent period occurred after independence when former President Robert Mugabe deployed the 5th Brigade to suppress alleged dissidents in Matabeleland and Midlands. Thousands of people were killed, and the wounds from this tragedy remain unhealed.
Tensions between Mashonaland and Matabeleland can be traced back to the pre-colonial era when Ndebele Kings raided Mashonaland for resources. Some believe that the Shona-speaking political elites still harbour concerns about a united Matabeleland due to this historical context. There are fears that a united Matabeleland could lead to secession and potentially result in civil wars similar to those experienced after independence.
Sengezo Tshabangu’s remarks come as Zimbabwe commemorates Unity Day on 22 December. Unity Day marks the signing of the Unity Accord in 1987, which ended the civil war between ZANU-PF led by Robert Mugabe and the Joshua Nkomo-led PF-ZAPU. However, concerns persist regarding the economic neglect of Matabeleland, particularly in Bulawayo, which used to be the country’s industrial hub. This economic disparity raises questions about the true unity and development opportunities for all regions in Zimbabwe.

A United Matabeleland Is Seen As A Security Threat - Tshabangu

ZAPU spokesperson Msongelwa Ndlovu has resigned from the position of party secretary for information, publicity and marketing and has been replaced by Richard Gandari.
The party’s secretary general Mthulisi Hanana confirmed the departure of Ndlovu and the deployment of Gandari.
In a communique to the party’s national executive council, national people’s council and party members, seen by the <a href="https://www.chronicle.co.zw/zapu-party-spokesperson-mr-msongelwa-ndlovu-resigns/">Chronicle</a>, Hanana also announced the appointment of J J Dube to the position of what the party calls the head of a think tank. It says:

President (Sibangilizwe Nkomo) has with immediate effect appointed Cde Richard Gandari as Secretary for Information Marketing and Publicity. Cde Gandari takes over from Cde Msongelwa Ndlovu.
The President has also appointed Cde JJ Dube to head the Think Tank. Following the elections, the Presidency suggested that the Think Tank be headed by someone who is based in Zimbabwe.
Cde Dube is a seasoned ZAPU cadre and his experience will come in handy. We wish both comrades well in their new roles.

The publication cited a ZAPU insider as saying that Ndlovu’s departure is linked to deep divisions on operational matters in the party.
Nkomo, who is the son of the late former Zimbabwe Vice President, Joshua Nkomo, is accused of exhibiting dictatorial tendencies.

ZAPU Spokesperson Msongelwa Ndlovu Resigns

The opposition Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) party said that the Commander of Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), General Phillip Valerio Sibanda should reject his recent appointment into the ZANU PF Politburo by President Emmerson Mnangagwa if he still has a ZAPU conscience, reported <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zapu-trashes-former-zipra-commander-valerio-sibanda-says-he-is-now-part-of-zanu-pf-cult-and-should-reject-politburo-appointment/">NewZimbabwe.com</a>.
Sibanda was a member of ZAPU’s military wing, the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZPRA) during the War of Independence.
On Saturday, 28 October, Mnangagwa announced Sibanda as an ex-officio member of ZANU PF’s Politburo.
Opposition political parties including ZAPU and the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) have said the appointment is unconstitutional and goes against Section 208 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe which bars serving members of the security services from being active members or office bearers of political parties.
Responding to followers on X, formerly Twitter, ZAPU said Sibanda should reject the appointment saying by joining the ZANU PF Politburo, he has become a member of the cult. It said:

If he still has any ZAPU conscience in him, he would reject it. But anyone who has enjoyed the poisoned chalice for so many years would definitely not do so. He is now part of the cult, and history will judge him harshly!

Some former ZAPU members who were led by the late former Home Affairs Minister Dumiso Dabengwa left ZANU PF in 2011 to revive the party.
However, the majority maintained their allegiance to ZANU PF saying they respected the 1987 Unity Accord.

ZAPU Says Army Commander Should Reject ZANU PF Politburo Appointment

The opposition ZAPU has resolved to field candidates in the 09 December 2023 by-elections after CCC led by Nelson Chamisa said it will boycott the polls.
In a statement, ZAPU spokesperson Msongelwa Ndlovu they will not boycott the elections to avoid giving a “free lunch” to the ruling ZANU PF party. Reads the statement:

After exhaustive internal consultations, ZAPU commissioned teams in Bulawayo to engage community leaders, residents, vendors and residents associations to seek their views regarding the impending by-elections.
We did this to ensure that our final decision would not be mistaken for an endorsement of the recalls and or sanitization of those who are actually behind these recalls.
After these successful consultations, the party has decided to heed the call of those who have told us never to give free lunch to the architects of these illegal recalls.
Pursuant to this, ZAPU will be fielding candidates in all affected constituencies subject to rigorous internal processes.
We are calling on all progressive forces to rally behind our candidates and defend the democratic space so molested by malevolent miscreants.

By-elections will be held on 09 December 2023 after CCC’s self-styled interim secretary general Sengezo Tshabangu recalled 15 CCC members of the National Assembly, 09 senators and 17 Councillors.

ZAPU Resolves To Field Candidates For 09 December By-elections

The opposition Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) is yet to make a decision about contesting in by-elections slated for 09 December 2023 following the recall of Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Members of Parliament and councillors.
Speaking on <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zapu-to-engage-supporters-over-by-elections/">This Morning on Asakhe hosted by CITE</a>, ZAPU spokesperson Msongelewa Ndlovu said that some party members are in favour of participating while others are pushing for a boycott of the polls. He said:
<blockquote>
One section of the membership is saying we should never allow ZANU PF a free lunch anywhere and anytime in the country.
This section of our membership is saying they will bring about contestation by hook or crook, they will find us ready to contest them underwater, on the hill mountains and in the air.
This is the section of the party that says we must defend the rights of the people at any cost.
But there is also a view that says if we allow ZANU PF to detect when and where to contest, we will possibly sanitize this madness.
This section of the membership says we should act in solidarity with the people whose leaders they elected have been denied that leadership.

Ndlovu said his party has resolved to engage people in the affected constituencies.
He also said ZAPU has fielded candidates in constituencies left vacant after the 23 August 2023 general elections, excluding those resulting from recalls initiated by Sengezo Tshabangu. Said Ndlovu:

There are two sets of by-elections. There are by-elections that came as a result of residual leftovers from the 23 August harmonized general election.
We have already fielded candidates and gone to the nomination courts for some of those by-elections, including one in Nkayi for council and the other one in Matabeleland North where we already have candidates.
What we are saying about the Sengezo Tshabangu by-election is that it is a matter that we need to deliberate on vigorously but make sure that whatever we do, we align our view with the views of the people.
Whether we should give ZANU-PF a free lunch in Matabeleland and other regions or ensure that we act in solidarity with the affected people and ensure that we render these so-called by-elections a sham that they are.

Tshabangu is a CCC member who claimed to be the party’s interim Secretary General and used the “position” to write letters to Parliament and the Minister of Local Government recalling 14 MPs, nine senators and 17 councillors.

ZAPU Members To Deliberate On Fielding Candidates In By-elections

Former Vice President Kembo Mohadi has announced that the return of properties belonging to ZAU and the Zimbabwe People’s Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) is imminent. These properties were seized by the government in the early 1980s, alleging the presence of arms caches, which tragically led to the Gukurahundi mass killings.
ZAPU and ZIPRA have persistently demanded the release of their properties, including farms and buildings. Mohadi who is the second secretary of ZANU PF, announced during a campaign rally in Luveve, Bulawayo that the government is currently in the final stages of gathering the necessary information and documentation required for the return of these properties. He said: 
<blockquote>
Government is in the process of finalising some of the information and documentation needed before handing the properties.
</blockquote>
Previously, the government had refused to comply, citing the Unity Accord of November 22, 1987, when PF ZAPU joined ZANU PF. However, in 2008, ZAPU withdrew from the Unity Accord, accusing ZANU PF of insincerity.
Although former Vice-President Phelekezela Mphoko had promised to facilitate the return of the seized properties, he left office before fulfilling that commitment. Among the properties listed by ZAPU are farms, hotels, and entertainment facilities.
Mohadi expressed confidence in ZANU PF’s prospects of winning the upcoming August 23 elections, suggesting that Zimbabweans abroad would be enticed to return home once the country has undergone reconstruction.
Exiled former ZANU PF Political Commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere, has asserted that Kembo Mohadi, has been lying to the general populace. Kasukuwere expressed his disapproval, stating:

Mohadi don’t lie to the people, for how long have you been saying the same promise. because we’re approaching elections now you have started your nonsense.

However, it was revealed two days later that these properties had been subsequently sold to various individuals.
Given the circumstances described, the specific number of properties that still exist remains uncertain. However, Ndebele suggests that there may be some properties that are still in existence, such as Nijo Farm and a few houses located in Harare.

Former VP Mohadi Says Return Of ZAPU And ZIPRA Properties Is Imminent

ZAPU has reported that the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has seized campaign t-shirts donated by its members in South Africa. The party, led by Sibangilizwe Nkomo, son of the late former Vice President and ZAPU founding leader Joshua Nkomo, shared this information on Twitter. Wrote the party:

ZIMRA has acknowledged the seizure and advised ZAPU to adhere to customs regulations. The regulator stated that the clearance of goods must follow the procedures outlined in Section 18 (f) (i) of the Customs and Excise Act. Responded the regulator:

ZAPU is now required to undergo the clearance process and fulfil the payment of state warehouse rent in order to retrieve its regalia. The party said it remains undeterred by this incident. This is happening about a fortnight before Zimbabwe holds harmonised elections.

ZIMRA Seizes ZAPU's Campaign T-Shirts From South African Members

Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) has called for a protest against <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Uebert_Angel">Uebert Angel’s</a>, church in Johannesburg, South Africa. Angel, a preacher and ambassador at large, is facing criticism after he was caught on camera offering to use his diplomatic cover to smuggle cash into Zimbabwe on behalf of journalists posing as criminals. The incident also implicates other politically connected individuals in gold smuggling and money laundering.
Angel, who is responsible for promoting Zimbabwe’s investment opportunities, is believed to be part of a larger gold smuggling cartel in a country <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/transparency-international-zimbabwe-zacc-eexpose-grand-corruption/">ranked among the most corrupt by Transparency International. </a>
ZAPU has decided to increase pressure on Angel, who is based in the UK and has churches in other countries. According to a flyer circulated on social media this week, ZAPU called for the protest at Angel’s church to voice displeasure at the government’s “apparent refusal to act on the scandal.” ZAPU national spokesperson Msongelwa Ndlovu told <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/zapu-leads-call-for-south-africa-protest-against-angel-gold-mafia/">ZimLive</a>:

The aim of the protest is to express our displeasure with the looting as exposed by the documentary, but more importantly, the arrogance of both the government and those implicated.

He said they are demanding accountability adding that those implicated must be visited by “requisite consequences including stripping of government responsibility and immediate arrest”.
According to Ndlovu, the government’s response to the Al Jazeera documentary is inadequate. Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa announced that the government has directed “relevant organs” to investigate the issues raised in the documentary, but Ndlovu believes this is “hollow and hopeless.” He argues that Al Jazeera did all the investigative work and that the government should take action based on the video evidence presented in the documentary.
Meanwhile, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/gold-mafia-rbz-has-frozen-uebert-angels-accounts/">frozen Uebert Angel’s accounts</a> and other individuals implicated in the gold smuggling and money laundering operations. Other accounts frozen belong to Kenyan-born Kamlesh Pattni, Ewan McMillan, Simon Rudland, Cleopas Chidodo, David Chirozvi, Mehlululi Dube, and Fredrick Kunaka. Critics say the move is a non-event considering that the gold mafia deals in cash and gold.
Over 16,000 Zimbabweans have signed a petition initiated by UK-based Zimbabwean, Cathy Filipe Tshezi calling on police to arrest Angel and also for the British government to freeze the cleric’s assets.
Angel has made a statement claiming that he deliberately staged the images showing him colluding with criminals to commit offences. According to Angel, state security warned him that the “criminals” may have had different intentions, so he decided to “play along” with their proposal.

Gold MAFIA: ZAPU Calls For Protest At Uebert Angel's Church In South Africa

The opposition ZAPU party has demanded that Zimbabweans living abroad should be allowed to vote as their remittances back home are helping to keep the country economically afloat.
ZAPU national organiser Ndodana Moyo told <a href="https://cite.org.zw/zimbabweans-in-the-diaspora-must-be-allowed-to-vote-zapu/">CITE</a> that Section 67 of Zimbabwe’s constitution grants the right to vote to all Zimbabweans, including those living in the diaspora.
He said even those Zimbabweans living in South Africa, Botswana, and Namibia are not able to return home to vote due to their work circumstances. Said Moyo:

They have a right to choose which president they want to lead them. It is important to appreciate people in the diaspora, who are sending their remittances to this country.
When you go to Mukuru, Western Union, and other platforms daily, people queue there daily for money sent by relatives in the diaspora.

He argued that Zimbabweans abroad were equally paying taxes to the government via their remittances and should therefore be allowed to partake in civic processes. Moyo said:

The government wants their money but not their vote, how does it work? The Diaspora is a special component of Zimbabwe, which sends money to assist in the development of their families and Zimbabwe as a whole, so they deserve and should have a right to shape the course of this country.
Every Zimbabwean who wishes to vote and participate in the polls must do so including those in the diaspora.

Moyo said the Electoral Amendment Bill should not be about “trivial” issues such as whether people can use their driver’s license to vote or not, but on important issues such as the diaspora vote among others.

ZAPU Demands That Zimbabweans In The Diaspora Be Allowed To Vote

The opposition ZAPU party says it is planning to contest the 2023 elections to prove that it is still in existence despite signing the Unity Accord with ZANU in 1987 to end the Gukurahundi killings.
ZAPU president, Sibangilizwe Nkomo, who is the son of the late PF ZAPU founding leader Joshua Nkomo, said having the party’s name on the ballot would be a “victory”. He said:

ZAPU will contest these elections, firstly as an act of defiance against those who, in 1987, thought that they had buried us.
Having our name on the ballot paper is victory enough. We must aim very high but remain realistic in our planning.

Nkomo made the remarks during the party’s inaugural cadre development workshop in Bulawayo early this week.
In 2008, the late Dumiso Dabengwa and some of the former PF ZAPU members quit ZANU PF to revive ZAPU but the party has failed to leave a mark on the country’s political landscape. Said Nkomo:

ZAPU Says It Will Contest In 2023 General Elections

Former ZAPU Secretary-General (SG), Strike Mkandla, has accused the party’s Council of Elders of failing to act on his expulsion from the party and has demanded to know why he was expelled.
Addressing a media briefing on Friday, Mkandla said ZAPU should be preparing for the 2023 general elections instead of going after members considered a threat to the party president, Sibangilizwe Nkomo. Mkandla said:

I have not communicated to anyone what I think about them even about the things they do and the manner in which they do them.
When everyone is trying to think of the 2023 elections, these guys seem to be preoccupied with pointing the gun at their feet.
How do you start attacking your own members before you even say what your strategy is in terms of national procedure barely six months before national elections?
Instead of harnessing all of your forces, they are attacking some people who are there at their disposal. Well, I don’t think I will be at the disposal of anybody now after all this.

He accused the Council of Elders of dereliction of duty for allegedly failing to inform him about the reasons for his expulsion from the party. Said Mkandla:

The Council of Elders didn’t say anything for or against me and they didn’t institute anything. This is a dereliction of duty by the Council of Elders leadership.
It’s very serious and it’s unprecedented in ZAPU that people can be charged and expelled and they don’t say anything.
It can be something if they said ‘we will not tell you the reasons but we sat down and we have a dossier somewhere but we are not publicising.’ As far as I know, they probably haven’t got reasons.

Expelled ZAPU SG Strike Mkandla Castigates Party's Council of Elders

The former ZAPU Secretary General, Strike Mkandla, is questioning his expulsion from the party, saying he was not given the specific reasons for the move.
He also argued that he was not among senior party members who took the party to court.
Mkandla, Matthew Sibanda, Ernest Ndlovu, Mildred Mkandla, and Akim Nkala were expelled from ZAPU on 12 November 2022 on the grounds that they had chosen a path that would harm the party.
But he maintains that he was fired because of allegations that he was planning to form and launch a new party, reports which he denied.
In a letter dated 17 November 2022, albeit not addressed to anyone, Mkandla said no charges were presented for the expelled to either “accept or challenge” in a disciplinary committee hearing of the Council of Elders.
He also argued that they were expelled from the party without a disciplinary hearing, as required by the party constitution.
However, speaking in an interview with <a href="https://cite.org.zw/former-zapu-sg-challenges-expulsion-from-the-party/">CITE</a>, ZAPU national spokesperson, Msongelwa Ndlovu, said Mkandla’s letter was not addressed to anyone in the party, and therefore does not merit a response. Said Ndlovu:

I don’t know what Dr Mkandla meant when he said the SG must send it to relevant persons because the SG of ZAPU is not anyone’s postboy.
Dr Mkandla is a former SG, he knows what to do, and he knows how to address letters if he wants to send a letter to ZAPU.
As far as we are concerned there is no ZAPU letter that was written by the former SG. If he is to write a letter we will respond.
We will not use official communication from the party to respond.

Ndlovu admitted there were no suspension letters because “they were expelled with dishonour.”

Former ZAPU Secretary-General Challenges Expulsion From The Party

Expelled ZAPU senior party members have castigated party president, Sibangilizwe Nkomo, accusing him of exhibiting dictatorial tendencies.
The sacked party members are Strike Mkandla (Secretary-General), Matthew Sibanda (Matabeleland South Provincial Chairperson), Ernest Ndlovu (provincial secretary), Mildred Mkandla (Secretary for Education and Training), and Akim Nkala (National Executive Council member).
They were expelled from ZAPU on Saturday on the grounds that they had “individually and collectively chosen a path designed to harm ZAPU in collaboration with those invested in this objective for many years now.”
Speaking in an interview with <a href="https://cite.org.zw/expelled-zapu-senior-members-accuse-nkomo-of-being-power-hungry/">CITE</a>, Mkandla said that Nkomo specifically targeted them for highlighting that he was not qualified to be party president based on a resolution passed by the National People’s Council (NPC). Said: Mkandla:

Nkomo is on and on about his powers. That’s very arbitrary and uncalled for. We don’t know anyone who did that, not even Joshua Nkomo or Dumiso Dabengwa had the powers that he is talking about. Even if they are there, they are constitutional, not personal powers.
We have structures in which we exercise those powers and that is through NEC or NPC. Nkomo must wait for congress to get new mandates to change anything but he’s on and on about powers vested in him, to the extent that he can take arbitrary personal decisions.
Decisions are constitutional to make sure there is an absence of arbitrariness, not to heap any powers on anybody whether SG, president, or national chairperson.
These are very fictitious powers, otherwise, the last person to do such things was Mugabe and maybe to some degree Tsvangirai. In ZAPU we never had such arbitrariness.
We always had meetings and Dabengwa spoke to other people. He even presided over meetings of 16 political parties, which were not made public.
What was important about Dabengwa is he actually was a very collective man in his approach.

Expelled ZAPU Senior Members Accuse Nkomo Of Exhibiting Dictatorial Tendencies

The opposition ZAPU has expelled five senior members who took to court the party president, Sibangilizwe Nkomo, for allegedly failing to adhere to the party’s constitution and procedures.
The senior party members challenged Nkomo’s candidature at the Bulawayo High Court ahead of the party’s elective congress last year in October.
They later withdrew the court application after holding talks with Nkomo, but then decided to revive it two months ago.
The senior members were now seeking an order overturning the 2020 congress where Nkomo was elected.
ZAPU spokesperson Msongelwa Ndlovu identified the sacked members as Strike Mkandla , Matthew Sibanda, Ernest Ndlovu, Mildred Mkandla and Akim Nkala. Said Ndlovu:

It is with regret to announce to ZAPU members, supporters and sympathisers that after 12 months of attempting to unite the party after our congress, the following individuals have expelled themselves from the union.
Messars Strike Mkandla, Matthew Sibanda , Ernest Ndlovu, Mildred Mkandla and Akim Nkala have individually and collectively chosen a path designed to harm ZAPU in collaboration with those invested in this objective for many years now.
ZAPU has noted and accepted their decision and wishes them well in their future endeavors.
We call on our members to treat them with the same treatment reserved for all our political opponents.

Mkandla is the party’s former secretary -general while Sibanda is the party’s former Matebeleland South Province chairperson, while Mildred is the party‘s former chairperson for the women’s assembly.
Ndlovu pleaded with the general party membership to avoid cooperating with the expelled members for the unity of the party. He said:

We implore our members to avoid cooperating with them as doing so only helps to advance their objective to divide and eventually destroy the party.
Let us remain vigilant and focused on the ultimate objective of delivering our people from the yokes of ZANU PF intolerance, corruption, and incompetence.

ZAPU Expels Five Senior Members

Sibangilizwe Nkomo, the son of the late former Vice President and ZAPU founding leader Joshua Nkomo, on Saturday won the Bulawayo nomination to contest for the ZAPU party presidency.
The Saturday victory leaves Nkomo leading the nominations in nine provinces, with Harare being the only province that is yet to vote.
Reports state that delays in the nomination process in Harare were due to disputes.
Zapu is preparing to hold its elective congress on October 29 and 30 in Bulawayo.
Party secretary for mobilisation and organisation Dereck Katsenga said Harare would hold its conference on Sunday. He said:

Bulawayo held its conference yesterday (Saturday) and Sibangilizwe Michael Nkomo got 158 votes, Strike Mkandla got 14 votes and Sithembiso Mpofu got 14 votes.
Harare is going to hold its provincial conference today (yesterday) and the results will be announced by the end of the day.

Zapu secretary for information and publicity Mandla Khanye said the Bulawayo elections were held peacefully, with 11 out of 12 districts in attendance.
Khanye added that only one district, Bulawayo South, abstained from the elections that were conducted and supervised by a committee of the council of elders.
He added that elder Mike Bathandi Mpofu acted as the presiding officer.
The vote was conducted through a secret ballot and Nkomo emerged as the winner.  However, there were several spoilt ballot papers.

Sibangilizwe Nkomo Wins Bulawayo Nomination For ZAPU Presidency

ZAPU activist Fortune Msebele said that the party is at a crossroads as its South Africa-based youth wing is accusing the party leadership of ineptitude and poor organisation ahead of its elective congress.
ZAPU ’s elective congress was initially scheduled for April but was postponed to August because of COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings.
It was necessitated by the death of its president Dumiso Dabengwa in 2019.
The youths also lambasted the party’s leaders for ring-fencing the position of secretary-general.
They nominated their former leader and current international relations secretary Fortune Msebele for the post of secretary-general.
The post is currently held by Strike Mnkandla, who has expressed interest to run for the presidency.
Speaking to NewsDay over the allegations of palpable discord within the organisation, Msebele said:
<blockquote>Our party is at a crossroads and a lot is at stake. We have seen other political parties splitting after congresses, ZAPU should remain united and I believe we still have time to negotiate and reach consensus leadership. We should all be guided by the principle that the party comes first.</blockquote>
Earlier in a statement, ZAPU’s South Africa provincial chairperson Lindani Nkomo announced that they were supporting Msebele to take over the position of secretary-general.
Nkomo stated that considering the problems ZAPU is currently facing, even if Barack Obama or Nelson Mandela or even Joshua Nkomo was appointed president, nothing will change.

ZAPU At Crossroads As Youths Accuse Old Guard Of Ineptitude

ZAPU has mourned the death of Zephaniah Nkomo who died on Sunday at a Bulawayo hospital and described him as a humble human being, Newsday reports.
ZAPU through its spokesperson Iphithule Maphosa said former President Robert Mugabe wanted to draft the Mafela Trust National Director into the Central Intelligent Organisation but he refused. Said Maphosa:
<blockquote>Zephaniah Nkomo was a Russia-trained intelligence officer of the National Security and Order (NSO), who offered distinguished service to Zapu and Zipra during the liberation struggle. After independence, Cde Zwe continued as head of the Zapu security department.
Like the rest of Zipra fighters his immense contribution to the liberation of Zimbabwe was never acknowledged or recognised by the powers that took over after the war. A humble man by nature, he never went about boasting about his contribution to the armed liberation struggle.
However, his closeness to, and trust bestowed upon him by the late Zapu president Dumiso Dabengwa spoke volumes about how highly regarded he was in the intelligence circles of Zipra’s NSO.

Mugabe Tried To Draft Him Into The CIO But He Refused - ZAPU Mourns Zephaniah Nkomo

Opposition Zapu party has postponed its congress from August this year to next year due to lockdown measures meant to contain the spread of COVID-19.
About 5 000 delegates were expected to attend the congress at the Amphitheater in Bulawayo to elect the successor to the late Dumiso Dabengwa.
The development was announced by the party’s Matabeleland South chairperson, Matthew Sibanda while speaking to Southern Eye last week. Sibanda said:
<blockquote>The decision was made at the national people’s council held in Bulawayo two weeks ago in view of the lockdown measures.
I urge people to rally behind the Zapu party as it is the party that has a well-known history of liberating the country.</blockquote>
He added that the party would have a review meeting in October to see if conditions allowed them to set a date for the congress.
Sibanda also said that the governing ZANU PF did not have the interests of the nation at heart adding that Zapu had the capacity to take the country forward and uproot corruption that has had debilitating effects on the economy and livelihoods.
