The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) lost over US$2 million worth of electricity transmission and distribution equipment to theft and vandalism between January and October of this year, reported <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/us2m-zesa-equipment-lost-to-theft">The Sunday Mail</a>.
The power utility reported that nearly 30 tonnes of copper conductors, valued at US$600,000, and 10 tonnes of aluminium conductors, worth US$103,000, were stolen during this period.
In addition, thieves siphoned off 1,543 litres of transformer oil, valued at US$7,700. A total of 136 transformers, critical to the electricity transmission process, were vandalised, resulting in losses of US$848,558.
Vandals also targeted bolts and nuts from high-voltage pylons, causing damages exceeding US$4,300.
In total, ZESA recorded 1,317 incidents of theft and vandalism, amounting to a staggering US$2,163,207 in losses.
Harare Region saw 12 transformers worth US$114,200 vandalised, alongside the theft of 5,895 kilograms of copper conductors valued at US$11,790.
The Northern Region (which includes Chinhoyi, Kadoma, and Bindura) reported losses of US$607,250, including the destruction of 43 transformers valued at US$378,000.
The Eastern Region, covering Manicaland and parts of Masvingo provinces, experienced equipment thefts totalling US$190,810, including 23 transformers worth US$99,058.
The Western Region, including Bulawayo and parts of Matabeleland, suffered losses of US$742,106. 
The Southern Region, covering parts of Masvingo, Gweru, and Kwekwe, incurred damages of US$157,824.
The rise in thefts and vandalism has been attributed, in part, to prolonged power outages, which have made ZESA infrastructure vulnerable.
With power supply disrupted in some areas, criminals have found it easier to steal essential components, further exacerbating the country’s energy crisis.

The thefts and vandalism caused a total of 1,317 incidents, leading to huge losses for ZESA. Different regions in Zimbabwe, like Harare, Northern, Eastern, Western, and Southern, all suffered losses. The increase in theft and vandalism is linked to frequent power outages, making ZESA's equipment more vulnerable. This problem is making the country's energy crisis worse.

Theft And Vandalism Cost ZESA Over US$2 Million In 10 Months

The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) has incurred losses of critical infrastructure valued at US$24 million due to vandalism since 2019.
In a recent press release, ZESA Executive Chairman Sydney Gata said equipment theft and vandalism pose significant risks, costing the power utility an estimated US$4 million annually.
Thieves primarily target copper and aluminium conductors, cables, transformer oil, pylons, and transformers.
In response, ZESA has been advocating for harsher, longer sentences for individuals convicted of infrastructure theft.
According to ZESA records, from 2019 to June 2024, there have been 7,186 recorded incidents, resulting in losses totalling US$24.4 million.
Gata also noted that the power entity is currently experiencing a supply shortfall of up to 540 MW during the high-demand winter period.
The average total power supply is around 1,310 MW, while peak demand reaches 1,850 MW, leading to significant load shedding. Said Gata:

However, we experienced a fault at the Hwange Power Station Unit 8 last week and we had to switch it off.
These are normal technical hitches that happen during the infancy of any new plants and I’m glad to notify you that our engineers have resolved this and we expect to synchronise the unit to be back online soon.
The utility implemented measures to increase power supply with additional imports to augment local supply and interventions to restore capacity at Hwange Power Station stages 1 &amp; 2 that have been out due to forced outages.
Hwange Power Station’s ongoing re-powering programme is a significant initiative aimed at enhancing the station’s reliability and output.

On Thursday, August 29, the 1,050 MW Kariba South Hydroelectric Power Station was generating 215 MW, while the Hwange Thermal Power Station, with an installed capacity of 1,520 MW, was producing 1,099 MW.

Zimbabwe's power company, ZESA, is losing a lot of money - $4 million each year - because people are stealing and breaking their equipment like wires and transformers. They want harsher punishments for those who do this. From 2019 to 2024, there were over 7,000 cases of theft, causing $24.4 million in losses. This is causing power shortages, especially in winter. ZESA is working on fixing the problems and increasing power supply. Kariba South Hydroelectric Power Station and Hwange Thermal Power Station are producing less power than they could.

Infrastructure Vandalism Costs ZESA US$4 Million Annually

A 46-year-old man from Chipinge in Manicaland Province was fined $200 000 for illegally connecting electricity to various homesteads.
Tito Muyambo of Taona Village under Chief Mutema tampered with Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) power lines.
He recently appeared before Chipinge regional magistrate, Noel Mupeiwa facing charges of contravening the Electricity Act.
Muyambo pleaded not guilty to the charges but was convicted after State witnesses gave overwhelming and incriminating evidence against him.
He was sentenced to six months imprisonment which was wholly suspended on condition that he pays a fine of $200 000.
Prosecuting, Themba Dhliwayo said on 1 February, ZETDC loss control officers conducted some routine checks in Nyanyadzi in Chimanimani District to establish illegal connections at homesteads. Said Dhliwayo:

The ZETDC officials went to Makotomo Village under Chief Muusha and discovered illegal connections at one of the ZETDC transmission poles.
They approached the Mushango homestead and interrogated Annamore Ngonyamore who spilled the beans that it was Muyambo who had made the illegal connections.
The accused also erected another transmission pole which he wanted to use to connect power to other homesteads but no connections had been made yet.

Muyambo was subsequently arrested and appeared in court on 29 April for initial remand before facing trial this month.

Man Fined $200 000 For Tampering With Power Line

The government has resolved to secure Epping Forest and Rochester Aquifer in Nyamandlovu to curb vandalism of electricity infrastructure, which is contributing to Bulawayo’s water crisis.
Police officers and security guards will soon be deployed at Epping Forest and Rochester Aquifer to protect electricity infrastructure which includes transformers and copper cables.
This followed the setting up of an inter-ministerial committee to provide both short and long-term solutions to Bulawayo’s perennial water challenges.
The committee comprises Ministers of Local Government and Public Works; Power and Energy Development; Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage; Lands, Agriculture, Water, Fisheries and Rural Development; Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution, the security sector and Bulawayo City Council (BCC).
Speaking in an interview with State media, Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo said security personnel will soon be deployed to safeguard the electricity infrastructure. He said:

Although ZESA and everyone are suggesting that we replace the copper transformers, which are targeted by thieves, that process is likely to take longer.
What we have, therefore, agreed on is that ZINWA and the city council must work with the security cluster.
Zimbabwe Republic Police must have permanent staff at Epping Forest and Rochester Aquifer to protect the area from acts of vandalism.
Instead of getting 20 megalitres from Epping Forest, we are only getting 3ML/day, which is an issue of grave concern.
They are stealing the oil and the copper. The city council working with ZINWA must have permanent security personnel stationed at all those transformers because we are now jeopardising the lives of over 60 000 people in the city’s western suburbs.

Security Personnel To Guard Electricity Infrastructure - Minister Moyo

Energy and Power Development Minister Zhemu Soda said the ongoing amendment of the Electricity Act will come up with stiffer penalties that will deter perpetrators of power supply equipment vandalism.
Speaking in an interview with <a href="https://www.manicapost.co.zw/honeymoon-over-for-electricity-vandals/">The Manica Post</a> on the sidelines of the Ministry of Energy and Power Development third quarter strategic planning and performance review workshop in Nyanga recently, Soda said:

The amendments to the Electricity Act will result in stiffer penalties being meted out to vandals.
We are referring to those destroying equipment that is supposed to be used in the transmission and distribution of electricity.
Everyone is noticing what is happening. We have people tampering with the equipment, so we are proposing stiffer penalties through the amendments.
This will act as a deterrent to would-be offenders. People must not tamper with electricity transmission equipment for whatever reason.

According to the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), 535 cases of power supply infrastructure vandalism or theft, with a total cost of US$1.5 million, were recorded during the first quarter of this year nationwide.
Only US$113 063 was recovered, constituting 14 percent recovery.
A total of 89 arrests were made and of those, only 19 were convicted.

New Electricity Law Will Deter Would-be Offenders - Soda

Police in Mutare have arrested a theft suspect and recovered ZESA equipment worth US$799 000. It is alleged that Kingston Makina and his accomplices, who are still at large, stole 17-meter boxes, 58 breakers and electric copper cables, which were all recovered on the scene.
Makina who has since appeared before Mutare Magistrate Purity Gumbo facing vandalism and theft charges is denying the charges.
The State, however, alleges that alert detectives actually saw Makina vandalising electricity equipment.
He was remanded in custody to February 28 for trial.
The development comes after local power utility, ZESA, has claimed that some of the power cuts were as a result of vandalism to its property.
Zimbabwe already has an acute shortage of power due to dwindling water levels at Kariba Dam and ageing equipment at Hwange Power Station.
Resultantly, ZESA has been importing more power from Mozambique’s Hydro Cahora Bassa and South Africa’s Eskom.
