The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has called on media houses and journalists to refrain from disseminating false, malicious, and inflammatory content, but rather adhere to the principles of journalistic integrity, accuracy, and accountability.
In a statement issued on November 28, the ZMC, one of the five Chapter 12 Independent Commissions, expressed concern over what it described as the publication of slanderous and disrespectful material that appears to undermine national leadership.
This comes after the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) demanded that a daily newspaper, should retract a story which claimed that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has turned to structures outside the official ZANU PF framework to violate the Constitution and extend his term in office beyond 2028.
On Wednesday evening, the OPC described the story as slanderous and “calculated to undermine national cohesion while placing the President in disesteem.”
The OPC has given the publication seven days to retract the story, warning that “failure which the Office reserves the right to initiate and institute legal proceedings as appropriately provided for at law.”
The ZMC has warned that the time is fast approaching when actions that blatantly violate journalistic ethics will be met with appropriate and decisive action. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) has noted with growing concern the continued publication of slanderous and disrespectful content, seemingly undermining national leadership.
Such reckless reporting weakens national cohesion, distorts the truth, and misleads the public, thereby posing a grave threat to the foundational values of our democracy.
The Commission recognizes that freedom of the media and freedom of expression are indispensable pillars of a democratic society.
These freedoms, enshrined in our Constitution and protected by various legislative frameworks, were hard-won and must be preserved.
However, with these freedoms come responsibilities, chief among them being the obligation of the media to adhere to the principles of journalistic integrity, accuracy, and accountability.
The dissemination of false, malicious, and inflammatory stories not only erodes public trust in the media but also jeopardizes the strides Zimbabwe has made in fostering an environment conducive to open discourse.
Such behaviour constitutes an abuse of the very freedoms that enable the press to operate and undermines the credibility of the journalistic profession.
The Zimbabwe Media Commission serves as the custodian of media standards and ethics in the country.
Our mandate is to promote and protect media freedom, while also ensuring that journalistic practices uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
We have worked tirelessly to support a media environment that informs and empowers citizens, contributes to national development, and strengthens democratic processes.
To this end, we strongly remind media houses and practitioners that their role is not only to report the news but to do so responsibly and truthfully. 
Irresponsible reporting that prioritizes sensationalism over factual accuracy or personal attacks over constructive dialogue has no place in our media landscape.
As the Commission continues to assess and monitor media conduct, we implore all stakeholders to reflect on their duty to the nation and the public.
The media must understand its pivotal role in shaping informed citizenry and contributing to social stability and unity.
We further emphasize that the time is swiftly approaching when such actions that flagrantly contravene journalistic ethics will be met with appropriate and decisive measures.
The Zimbabwe Media Commission remains committed to engaging with media houses and practitioners to uphold the values of ethical journalism. 
We urge all media professionals to rededicate themselves to the principles of truth, fairness, and responsibility.
Let us work together to preserve the dignity of our profession, protect the freedoms we cherish, and contribute to the building of a cohesive and democratic Zimbabwe.

The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) is warning media houses and journalists to stop spreading false and hurtful stories about national leaders. They want the media to be accountable and truthful in their reporting. One newspaper claimed that the President was doing bad things, but the President's office said it was lies. The ZMC says that spreading malicious stories can harm the country and weaken democracy. They remind the media to report news responsibly and truthfully. If journalists don't follow these rules, they could face serious consequences. The ZMC wants everyone to work together to protect the dignity of journalism and help build a better Zimbabwe.

ZMC Warns Media Against Publishing Malicious Content

The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) on Wednesday, 04 October expressed concern over reports of sexual harassment and sexual abuse in the media sector.
This comes after Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) Director of Radio Services, Robson Mhandu, and ZBC’s Power FM station manager, Scott Matengambiri, better known as DJ Scott,  were reportedly suspended over sexual harassment allegations.
In a statement, ZMC said it shall not turn a blind eye as the cancer of sexual harassment and sexual abuse threatens to destroy the media industry. Reads the statement:

The Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) is deeply concerned about sexual harassment and sexual abuse that is reported to be rampant in the media sector.
The reports received from our interface with practitioners and other stakeholders indicate that the practice has become endemic and deeply entrenched in the media industry.
The ZMC is calling for zero tolerance to the scourge irrespective of the position, class, status and gender of the alleged perpetrators.
There must be safe spaces for everyone in the newsrooms and other workspaces. As the Regulator of the Media Industry in Zimbabwe, the ZMC shall not turn a blind eye to the cancer that threatens to destroy the industry.
The ZMC urges survivors to report any violations and harassment to their organisations’ sexual harassment committees, immediate authorities, or to any preferred entity within the media sector, victim-friendly units of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, as well as the Zimbabwe Gender Commission, among other centres, to ensure that perpetrators are held accountable.
The ZMC urges stakeholders and partners to hold immediate disciplinary hearings following the immediate suspension of the alleged perpetrators so as to make room for unfettered investigations outside the intimidation of alleged victims.
It goes without saying that the alleged perpetrator will then be expected to stay away from the said entity grounds so as to avoid any sort of intimidation of possible victims, as well as witnesses until investigations are complete.
It is our hope that the validation of the Draft Sexual Harassment Policy that the ZMC held on Wednesday 27th September 2023 in Harare, continues gaining traction within the media sector to rid our society of this cancer.
Further, it should be noted that the ZMC will not tolerate false reporting of sexual misconduct and harassment in the media fraternity.
Should it be found that an individual has falsely accused another of sexual harassment, disciplinary proceedings are to be immediately held, paving the way for the suspension of the individual propagating falsehoods.
Any false report must also be accompanied by a public apology as such allegations can seriously harm one’s professional and social standing, thus the ZMC will not be seen to be tolerating such malicious behaviour.
As part of its continual efforts to professionalise the media industry, as well as create safe workspaces for all our practitioners and stakeholders, the ZMC looks forward to adoption and launching of its Draft Sexual Harassment Policy that has zero tolerance for any form of sexual abuse.
The Policy provides the framework for the entire Zimbabwe media industry. It is the ZMC’s sincere hope that all stakeholders remain professional in and outside their workspaces and continue to uphold the good reputation and ethical standards that the Zimbabwean media industry has created over the years.

Zimbabwe Media Commission "Deeply Concerned" Over Sexual Harassment In Media Sector

The government of Zimbabwe has gazetted new registration fees for accreditation of journalists by the Zimbabwe Media Commission (ZMC) effective from January 1, 2020.
The new rates are contained in Statutory 79 of 2020 titled Access to Information and Protection of Privacy (Registration, Accreditation and Levy) (Amendment) Regulations, 2020 (No. 8).
Local journalists will now pay $120 for a new applicant, $80 renewal and $50 for card replacement.
Local journalists working for foreign media houses will pay their accreditation fee of US$200.
Foreign journalists working for a foreign media service the accreditation fee is US$300.
The fee for a temporary accreditation for a foreign journalist is US$150 while the fee for an extension of the accreditation period is US$50.
Foreign journalists will have to part with a US$2 000 fee for Productions or Projects.
Journalists from the Southern Africa Development Countries bloc will pay US$30 while the rest of Africa pay US$50 and others US$100.
