The Supreme Court has reserved judgment in a case where the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Zimbabwe Power Company</a> (ZPC) appealed against a <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">High Court ruling</a> that found <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Wicknell Chivayo</a> not guilty of breaching <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">contractual agreements</a> of the Gwanda Solar Project.
In 2013 Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) — a subsidiary of <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Electricity_Supply_Authority_Holdings" title="Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority Holdings">ZESA Holdings</a>, floated a tender for the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) of a 1000MW Gwanda Solar Power Station Project. Chivayo’s Intratek Zimbabwe reportedly bid but lost. However, the terms of the tender were changed to allow Intratek (together with Chinese company ZTE) to be accepted and supply the solar stations.

It was alleged that the initial partners, Greenfield Solar of Germany, did not have the financing for such a project, after having been awarded the tender. They would later enter into a partnership with a Chinese company, China Electric Company, to build a now even bigger power station, said to be at the tune of US$750 million in <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Gwanda" title="Gwanda">Gwanda</a>.
In 2014, Intratrek Zimbabwe partnered with Green Solar Europa to build a $350 million solar power station. However, China Jiangxi Corporation won the contract with a bid of $184 million.
ZPC demanded that Intratrek partner with Jiangxi, who had won the contract. Intratrek and ZTE then lowered their initial bid of $248 million to match Jiangxi’s price.
The State Procurement Board (SPB) later cancelled Jiangxi’s contract, alleging that they had raised their price. Intratrek was eventually awarded the contract for $202 million, although the initial reported price was $171 million, and there is no explanation for the $30 million difference or the multiple changes in the project’s cost.
Intratrek Zimbabwe won the bid for the 1000 MW Gwanda Solar Project in 2015 and received $5.6 million in advance payment for preparatory work. However, legal disputes have prevented the project from being implemented. ZPC cancelled the tender after Wicknell had allegedly failed to meet the set deadlines. He challenged and the High Court judge, Justice Priscilla Munangati-Monongwa, handed down a judgement in January 2023 declaring the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">EPC</a> contract valid and extant, which means that the contract is legally valid and binding between the parties.
The court also ordered ZPC to pay Intratrek for the work done, which amounted to US$1,191,374, and the outstanding balance of US$693,000. The High Court also gave Chivayo approval to proceed with the project.
ZPC then appealed against the High Court ruling. The case is now before the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Supreme Court</a> for review.
This is happening when some Zimbabweans are angry with Wicknell Chivayo for importing six luxurious vehicles worth about 3.5 million dollars while the <a class="MarkdownLink_linkifiedLink__KxC9G">Gwanda Solar Project</a> has not yet started. Although Chivayo claims his success is due to his faith in God, some members of the public believe he is using stolen money. Zimbabwe is currently facing a severe power shortage due to old power generation equipment, corruption, and irregular rainfall.

Supreme Court Reserves Ruling In Chivayo, ZPC Gwanda Solar Project Case

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Wicknell_Chivayo/">Wicknell Chivayo</a> has claimed that he had been praying for over three years for six luxurious vehicles worth about 3.5 million dollars he imported recently and that his success is a result of his faith in God. In a social media post seen by Pindula News, Chivayo expressed his love for cars and apologized for any offence caused by buying so many vehicles at once. He said:

Wicknell Chivayo: I Prayed For 3 Years Before Importing $3.5m Worth Vehicles

The Minister of Energy and Power Development, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Soda_Zhemu">Soda Zhemu</a>, announced that Hwange Unit 8 is now ready for synchronisation. He also commended the improvements in power supply resulting from the full operation of Hwange Unit 7.
He made the statement while speaking to journalists at the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/2023/04/30/us-uk-eu-participation-at-zitf-proof-that-re-engagement-is-working-ed">Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF)</a> in Bulawayo on Friday. The synchronisation of Unit 7 last month has been credited with reducing power cuts in some parts of the country. Domestic power generation capacity has risen to over 1 000MW total output, up from the lowest point of about 300MW in February of this year. Minister Zhemu told journalists:

Hwange Unit 7 has been under construction for quite some time but it was synchronised onto the national grid on 20 March and is still undergoing commissioning tests at various performance levels. I am pleased to announce that on 16 May we will witness the synchronisation of Unit 8 and getting connected to the national grid. In June we will have Unit 7 being available commercially. What it means is that we shall have a constant supply of 300 megawatts.

The 600MW Hwange expansion project, costing US$1.5 billion through a Chinese loan deal, was facilitated by the Second Republic under President Mnangagwa, he added.
Minister Zhemu also announced that the Kariba Power Station which was in danger of shutting down last year due to low water levels is now producing an average of 500 megawatts. Last year, negotiations with Zambia allowed the power station to generate an average of 250 megawatts. The minister stated that they intend to increase the generation further to meet the demands for winter wheat production activities.
Despite efforts to stabilise Zimbabwe’s power situation, it remains fragile due to vandalism, which forces the power utility to redirect funds from other projects to replace damaged equipment. Minister Zhemu has stated that measures are being taken to address this issue, such as using drones for surveillance and introducing legislation to deter such activities.

Hwange Unit 8 Ready For Synchronisation - Energy Minister

<a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Wicknell_Chivayo">Wicknell Chivayo</a>, a Zimbabwean businessman, is importing a Rolls Royce from London, United Kingdom amid anger from members of the public over the multi-million dollar Gwanda Solar Project which has failed to take off since 2015.
In a video circulating on social media, an Apostolic Sect preacher is heard saying he had sanctified (blessed/consecrated) Wicknell’s Rolls Royce which was due to be sent to Zimbabwe. The unidentified man also said another car was on its way. Watch the video below for more:

Chivayo Imports Rolls Royce From UK Amid Anger Over Gwanda Solar Project

ZESA Holdings subsidiary, Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), says it is generating 951 megawatts (MW) of electricity against a national peak demand of 2 200MW.
The power shortage has resulted in the country experiencing electricity blackouts of up to 18 hours per day in some areas.
Despite the successful synchronisation of Hwange Unit 7 into the national grid, ZETDC call centre supervisor Milton Zata said they were still facing challenges. <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200009437/zesa-only-generating-951mw">NewsDay</a> quotes Zata as saying:

Unfortunately, we have national grid challenges, resulting in these long outages.
</blockquote>
This comes amid reports that traditional power suppliers – South Africa and Mozambique – recently stopped exporting electricity to Zimbabwe due to arrears.
The blackouts are seriously affecting businesses and industries countrywide.
With Hwange Unit 7 appearing to struggle to feed the envisaged 300MW into the national grid following its upgrade, the power crisis is set to persist as Hwange’s Unit 8 is only expected to go live in October with another 300MW.

ZESA Generating 951 MW Of Electricity Against Demand Of 2 200MW

The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Power_Company">Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC)</a>, a subsidiary of the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)</a> has issued an update on power generation in the country noting an increase in electricity generated at various power plants nationwide.
In a power generation update seen by Pindula News, ZPC said Zimbabwe is producing a total of 727 megawatts as of February 6, 2023, up from about 300 megawatts that were being produced last week. Reads the update issued on Monday:

Zimbabwe has been facing a power crisis for several years now, characterized by frequent power cuts and load shedding. 
The southern African country’s power crisis is attributed to drought, old infrastructure, lack of investment, and debt. 
In an endeavour to address the problem, the government has tried several measures including investing in renewable energy and rehabilitating existing infrastructure, but there are still significant challenges to overcome.
 In its report for 2022 fourth quarter (Q4), ZPC stated that a total of 1,719GWh was produced, falling short of its quarterly goal of 2,490GWh  by 30.96%.  
The power generation utility missed its 9,111GWh annual energy set-out target for 2022 by 7.29%.
Zimbabwe relies on hydropower from Kariba South Power Station since its aged units at the Hwange Power Station are failing to generate to maximum capacity.

ZPC Issues Update On Power Generation

Villagers in Chiadzwa’s Mukwada area have called upon the government to assist them “as soon as possible” amid reports that “all nurses have left” a local hospital over the unavailability of electricity.
Bocha Diamond Community Trust chairman Moses Mukwada said 11 villages in the Mukwada ward were affected by the closure of the clinic. He is quoted by <a href="http://www.thestandard.co.zw/standard-people/article/10679/nurses-abandon-clinic">the Standard</a> as saying:
<blockquote>
There has not been electricity for the past two months and all nurses have left the clinic. There is no single nurse except for only one or two caregivers.
</blockquote>
Mukwada said the clinic serviced at least 11 villages as well as the surrounding Mutsago and Chipindirwe areas.
Headman Mukwada also echoed Moses’ sentiments adding:

We have pregnant women in our area and they need to be assisted as soon as possible, so we are calling upon the government to assist us as soon as possible.
</blockquote>
The cause of the unavailability of electricity at the health institution is not yet known.
Meanwhile, there is a huge power crisis nationwide and the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) is implementing a 22-hour-long load-shedding.

Villagers Call For Assistance As "All Nurses Have Left" A Local Clinic

Zimbabwe has over the past three years experienced the worst power crisis in years as generation continues to fluctuate around 500MW.
The southern African country has one hydropower plant and four coal-fired generators that have a total combined capacity of 2 240 megawatts (MW). 
An update by the Zimbabwe Power Company on 05 December 2022 suggests that Zimbabwe generated a total of 501MW on that day. Pindula News presents the breakdown below:

Zimbabwe has a peak demand of 2 200 MW.

ZESA, the local power utility, is <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zesa-fails-to-pay-coal-suppliers/">failing to pay coal producers on time</a> and they are now “heavily incapacitated” and they can no longer have working capital.
ZESA’s four thermal power stations, Hwange, Harare, Munyati, and Bulawayo are not operating at full capacity due to coal shortages.
<h2>Power Outlook:</h2>
Hwange Unit 7 is expected to come online in the next few weeks, according to official timelines, but concerns have been raised over the adequate availability of coal. Contracts to supply coal for Unit 7 were awarded only to Turbo mine, linked to businessman Billy Rautenbach and Hwange Colliery Company Ltd.
Unit 8 is also being developed in parallel and is expected that it will be commissioned during the first quarter of 2023.
An additional coal plant at Hwange is said to be going through maintenance and should be running soon, thus adding an additional 15 MW to the national grid.
Authorities also say efforts are underway to ramp up production for the small thermals in Bulawayo, Harare and Munyati to push them to 45MW. 
There are separate solar projects at Blanket Mine, Caledonia, Gwanda (which was contracted to Wicknell Chivayo) and another in Guruve.
Net metering which allows Zesa customers with their own power generation, usually solar, to both sell and buy power is also said to be an option being considered. 
Medium and long term: Government says it intends to bring in the competitive procurement of 500MW of solar whose feasibility study has since been completed and an announcement will be made during the first quarter of 2023.
Zimbabwe imports a combined total of 540 MW.
The plans stated so far will still leave Zimbabwe with a power deficit.

Zimbabwe Power Generation Fluctuates 05 - 10 December 2022

Power went off during an examination at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in the Great Hall.
UZ acting registrar Munyaradzi Madambe Thursday confirmed the development adding that there was darkness for a brief moment, according to NewsDay. He said:

We had a series of power outages on December 6, 2022. It’s unfortunate that someone decided to be mischievous by taking that picture during the 30 seconds transition from Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA) electricity to generator power. All our venues have backup power. It is also important to note that we have a dedicated ZESA power grid, so we hardly have power cuts, unless there is a fault, of which Zesa would always expeditiously attend to.

Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) secretary-general Joseph Nyamayaro refuted Madambi’s claims saying there was darkness for about 15 minutes during the examination. He is quoted by NewsDay as saying:

The UZ is taking students for granted. However, it is the State that is actually disrespecting students because it is a shame that its higher education institutions have increased fees, but cannot provide simple things like generators for students during examinations.
To say the blackout during the examination happened for a few seconds is mere propaganda. One cannot take a picture of a blackout in seconds. Even if electricity was later restored, they cannot restore the damage that students experienced. During an examination, the mind and body should be in sync. This rot in electricity and water service delivery has severely affected students.

Zimbabwe is experiencing a huge power deficit which is expected to intensify in the following weeks after the Zimbabwe Power Company was ordered to scale down operations at the Kariba South Hydropower Station to allow water to refill at Kariba Dam.

Power Goes Off During UZ Exam

Zimbabwe’s permanent secretary of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana has said the government is working to resolve the power crisis which he said is “causing distress to the citizenry and business.”
The <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/ZESA">Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)</a> rolled out a crippling load-shedding schedule last week after being directed by the Zambezi River Authority <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/severe-load-shedding-looms-as-zra-tells-zesa-to-shut-down-kariba-power-station/">to reduce power generation</a> at <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kariba_South_Power_Station">Kariba South Hydropower Station</a> to allow the water body to refill.
In some parts of the country, load-shedding goes for 22 hours while it is effective, uninterrupted, from 5 am to 11 pm in some parts of Harare, the capital. In a Twitter post seen by Pindula News, Mangwana thanked the citizenry for its patience. He said:

His remarks are in resonance with those of President Emmerson Mnangagwa who wrote in his weekly column in The Sunday Mail that the <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/the-power-crisis-makes-us-unattractive-to-investments-president-mnangagwa/">power cuts were making Zimbabwe unattractive to potential investors</a>.
Businesses say they have resorted to using generators and solar systems, an alternative that is expensive and is likely to trigger a sharp rise in the prices of commodities.
Zimbabwe’s imports of 540MW from neighbouring countries are not enough to cover the power deficit.
An update by the Zimbabwe Power Company on 6 December 2022 (today) suggests that Zimbabwe is generating a total of 494MW. In total, Zimbabwe has 1034 MW against a peak demand of 2 200 MW.
ZESA heavily relies on the Kariba Hydropower Station as the ageing <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Hwange_Power_Station">Hwange Thermal Power Station</a> is always breaking down.
There have been efforts to refurbish the Hwange plant and introduce new ones but there are no dividends to pick from the initiatives, yet.

"Power Cuts Are Causing Distress To The Citizenry And Business," - Mangwana

Opposition <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Citizens%27_Coalition_for_Change">Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC)</a> national spokesperson, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Fadzayi_Mahere">Fadzayi Mahere</a> has said the ruling ZANU PF looted the money that was supposed to be used for the refurbishment and or building of Zimbabwe’s energy infrastructure.
Mahere speaks as Zimbabwe is facing prolonged blackouts due to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/severe-load-shedding-looms-as-zra-tells-zesa-to-shut-down-kariba-power-station/">decreasing water levels at Kariba Dam.</a> In a Twitter post seen by Pindula News, Mahere said:

Mahere’s remarks were echoed by Dr Grant Murewanhema @geemurie who said Zimbabwe has many possible sources of power generation. Murewanhema said:

"ZANU PF Govt Looted Money For Building Zimbabwe's Energy Infrastructure" - Fadzayi Mahere

Energy and Power Development minister Zhemu Soda Sunday said the decline in the quantity of power generated at Kariba is as a result of natural causes, <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200004481/no-funding-for-power-imports-minister">NewsDay</a> reported. 
His remarks come after the Zimbabwe Power Company, a subsidiary of the Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA), was directed by the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) to scale down operations at Kariba South Hydropower Station to allow water to refill at Kariba Dam.
ZPC stated on 5 December 2022 (today) that only 200MW were being generated at the plant.
The situation means Zimbabwe will likely have prolonged power cuts. Commenting on the situation while addressing journalists in Harare, Soda said:

The government is making an intervention. This is a crisis situation and we hope through that intervention, funding will be available to apply for the additional capacity which we are looking forward to getting from our neighbours.
The ministry urges all consumers to reduce load by employing energy conservation and efficiency measures. Lights must be switched off in all offices at night and other measures like rightsizing of equipment, use of energy savers.
Over and above the above measures, government is pursuing a medium to long-term plan to meet the power needs of the country. The government is supporting the acceleration of implementation of renewable energy projects by independent power producers.
Government has identified some solar sites where it will fast-track implementation and pre-feasibility studies have already been done. It must be noted that the situation at Kariba is mainly due to natural causes and the ministry is doing all in its power to avert the situation.
The Zimbabwean government has turned to neighbouring countries seeking to increase imports from the region and replace 300MW lost through restrictions at Kariba.

Currently, Zimbabwe is importing a combined 250 megawatts (MW) from South Africa, Zambia and Mozambique.
Additional negotiations are ongoing, with 150MW expected from Mozambique, Soda said.
Zhemu made the remarks after hopes to import more power from Zambia were dampened with the neighbouring country introducing a six-hour daily load-shedding regime starting on December 15.
Zimbabwe had hoped to plug the supply gap with additional power imports from Zambia. 
However, the latest developments mean continued power imports from Zambia is no longer guaranteed.

The Situation At Kariba Is Mainly Due To Natural Causes - Energy Minister

Harare City Council (HCC) has said incessant power cuts have affected the scheduled water rationing scheme.
The local government authority announced at the end of November that it would <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/harare-city-resolves-to-ration-water/">start rationing water citing challenges in water production.</a>

The Environment Management Committee has resolved that Council rations water in the wake of suppressed water production.
Our local aluminum sulphate supplier is facing production challenges while the delivery of the imported granular substitute has also been inconsistent thereby affecting portable water production and subsequent equitable distribution to residents of Harare.
On Sunday Council received four loads of imported granular, aluminum sulphate with a further 16 loads still enroute from Beira to Harare.
Production at Morton Jaffray Water Works currently stands at 136 megalitres out of an available capacity of 450ML and Prince Edward 78.
All efforts are being made to work out sustainable solution to the problems.
Residents are therefore encouraged to use availed supplies conservatively all the time they receive water.
All inconveniences caused are sincerely regretted.

According to a power update by the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) on 5 December 2022, all power generators were contributing a combined total of 501 MW against a peak demand of 2 200 MW.

Harare City Says "Incessant Power Cuts Have Affected Scheduled Water Rationing Scheme"

Zambia’s Energy Minister Peter Kapala has announced that ZESCO, the local power utility, will commence load shedding on 15th December 2022 due to the low water levels in the Kariba dam.
Kapala said the water levels in Kariba dam have been reducing on account of low inflows from the Zambezi river and over-utilisation of water to sustain power generation has also worsened the situation.
The Minister said load management will be undertaken for a period of four months aimed at rationing water in the dam in order to avoid a complete shutdown, <a href="https://www.lusakatimes.com/2022/12/02/load-shedding-returns-as-zesco-announces-a-six-hour-load-shedding-schedule/">Lusaka Times</a> reported.
He said as of 28th November 2022, the water levels were at 4.1 per cent of usable water storage saying this threatens power generation for both Zambia and Zimbabwe. 
Delivering a ministerial statement in Parliament on the 2nd of December 2022, Kapala said:

ZESCO will implement a load management regime aimed at rationing power generation at the Kariba Complex to avoid a complete shutdown. This will be done with the view to minimize the impact on key economic sectors as well as preservation of the integrity of generation units at the Kariba Complex.
We anticipate that based on the water levels, this will translate into a load management regime starting on 15th December 2022 of up to a maximum of six (6) hours daily until the water levels improve.

He said the proposed measures will be phased and revisited from time to time over the next four months in order to ensure the security of the electricity supply and mitigate the impact on the economy.
Kapala spoke after the Zambezi River Authority had directed Zimbabwe Power Company to immediately ensure that Power generation activities at the South Bank Power Station are reduced to a maximum of 300MW instead of 600MW.
ZESCO will reduce generation at Kariba North Bank Power Station to a maximum of 800MW until further review of the substantive Hydrological outlook at lake Kariba.
His remarks come barely days after a Zambian politician and member of the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Joseph_Kalimbwe">Joseph Kalimbwe</a> suggested that Zimbabwean authorities were lying about a decrease in water levels in Kariba Dam.

The Kariba Lake is designed to operate between 475.50m and 488.50m of water above sea level (asl) for purposes of hydropower generation. 
For the year 2022, ZRA allocated a combined total of 45 Billion Cubic Meters of water to ZESCO and ZPC for power generation at the Kariba Complex. The allocation was to be shared equally between ZESCO and ZPC with each utility to utilize 22.5 Billion Cubic Meters of water respectively for the year 2022.

Zambia's ZESCO Announces A Daily 6-Hour Load Shedding Due To Low Water Levels In Kariba Dam

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said the power crisis in Zimbabwe is making the southern African country “unattractive to investments” hence the need to find solutions “urgently”.
His remarks come after the Zambezi River Authority (ZRA), which manages the river’s water on behalf of Zambia and Zimbabwe, advised the <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Zimbabwe_Power_Company">Zimbabwe Power Company</a> to <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/severe-load-shedding-looms-as-zra-tells-zesa-to-shut-down-kariba-power-station/">shut down</a> its <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Kariba_South_Power_Station">Kariba South Hydropower Plant</a> owing to reduced water levels.
This limited electricity generation at the plant to 300 megawatts (MW).
Writing in his weekly column in <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/govt-mobilises-resources-for-power-imports">The Sunday Mail</a>, President Mnangagwa said he convened an urgent meeting for all Government departments to tackle the emerging threat. He said:

We have to engage sister countries in our SADC region with <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-engages-zambia-for-additional-power-imports-minister/">excess power to export</a> to us. We urgently need to plug the current deficit through more imports.
Enough resources have to be mobilised for that to happen. They will be mobilised. The cost of importing power is relatively less than a slowdown in industry, whose capacity utilisation has been rising steadily.
Or stoppages altogether, not to mention delays in new investments caused by power shortages. Such an eventuality makes us unattractive to investments, foremost foreign direct investments which are so hard to attract, and can easily choose other country destinations. I am concerned about power-related stresses which industry is currently facing. Solutions will be found urgently.

President Mnangagwa indicated that Hwange Unit 7 will be commissioned in a few weeks, while work to refurbish six existing generators at the same power station and several other thermal stations across the country is currently underway. 
He added that the Government will ensure enough coal deliveries are made to all thermal power stations, as well as relook into the licensing regime to encourage independent power producers (IPPs) and new players in the renewable sector.

"The Power Crisis Makes Us Unattractive To Investments" - President Mnangagwa

One of the two power generators being built at Hwange Thermal Power Station was successfully turned on for the first time on Tuesday, bringing the country closer to producing an additional 300 megawatts.
The additional power, expected to be fed into the national grid before the end of the year, is premised on easing power shortages in the country.
The 300 MW unit is part of two generators making up the Hwange Thermal Power Station Unit 7 and 8 Expansion Project being undertaken by Chinese firm Sinohydro under a facility from China Eximbank.
When complete, the two units are expected to produce a combined 600 MW. The second unit is due for commissioning in early 2023.
In a brief update, the contractor tweeted:

Hwange Expansion Project successfully completed the rolling of number 7 unit of steam turbine at rated 3000rpm (3000 revolutions per minute) on November 15, 2022 for the first time.
</blockquote>
Rolling means getting the steam turbine to rotate in order to produce electricity.
In an earlier update, the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) said the new 300 Megawatts from Hwange would not be immediately fed into the grid, said <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/power-projects-update-hwange-unit-7-coming-online-in-2022/">ZPC in its quarterly production update</a>. Read the update:

The Hwange Expansion Project Unit 7 is expected to be synchronised to the grid by the end of this year. 
The Deka upgradation project is 71.2 percent complete and on track to be completed by March 31, 2023. The pipes have been laid in the order of thickness for the entire 42km. Since then, pipe welding has begun.

Zimbabwe currently faces a huge power deficit due to old generating plants and low water volumes at Kariba Dam, where the country’s biggest power plant is situated.
Apart from building new power plants, other initiatives to increase electricity generation in the country are being pursued, including refurbishing the old Hwange thermal plant.

China-funded Hwange Power Generator Turned On

The <a href="https://newzwire.live/power-projects-update-zpc-sets-2023-for-hwange-old-plant-rehab/">Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC)</a> says it expects to start a critical refurbishment of the aged Hwange power plant in 2023, according to newZWire.
The project, funded by <a href="https://zero.pindula.co.zw/zimbabwe-gets-us310-million-from-india-for-rehabilitation-of-hwange-power-station/">a US$310 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of India</a>, is meant to extend the life of Hwange’s six existing generator units. ZPC said in its latest update on power projects:

The rehabilitation of the ageing thermal power plant shall be done in three phases, and we are projecting that the work on the refurbishment will begin in the third quarter of 2023.
</blockquote>
Some context:
The current Hwange units were built close to 40 years ago, and break down often, causing blackouts. 
The project to refurbish them and extend their life will take up to five years, officials said previously. When complete, the units would add up to 880MW.
This will be a separate project to the construction of the two new units, Hwange 7 &amp; 8, which will add a combined 600MW. 
ZPC plans to bring unit 7 online this year, while unit 8 will be connected next year. The project has been slowed down by a combination of government payment delays and COVID-19 disruptions.
ZPC will need more water to supply the new 7 &amp; 8 plants, and this is being done by building a 42km pipeline from the Zambezi. This will only be completed in March.
Zimbabwe faces a huge power deficit as it is generating about 870MW, about half of the current demand.
The crisis is attributed to underinvestment and corruption.

Power Projects Update: Hwange Unit 7 Coming Online In 2022

Businessman and socialite, <a href="https://www.pindula.co.zw/Wicknell_Chivayo">Wicknell Chivayo</a>, has told the High Court that his arrest on allegations of defrauding the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) had tarnished his integrity to an extent that it was now difficult to get any lucrative contracts.
He was testifying in a case where he is suing ZPC for US$22 million for defamation, and for breaching the solar project deal, which he argues was still valid.
Chivayo said his company, Intratrek Zimbabwe, has lost considerable business, locally and abroad, owing to the ZPC scandal.
He said he has lost credibility with potential clients. <a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/chivayo-laments-impact-of-zesa-fraud-charge-i-can-no-longer-win-new-contracts-he-tells-court-as-he-sues-utility-for-us22m/">NewZimbabwe.com</a> cites Chivayo, an ex-convict, as saying:

I can no longer do any projects due to the bad publicity l have received due to the ZPC deal.
I have lost potential business in Kenya and Tanzania. l had gone there to do business and l was told l was the person who took money from ZPC and ran away. 
We visited the site together, they came back and did a report so it does not make any sense that l failed to deliver on the promises agreed on.
They have been malicious and circulating falsehoods

He further insisted that ZPC was owing Intratrek huge amounts of money from a deal they penned seven years ago.
Chivayo denies the allegations by ZPC that he took money meant for the Gwanda solar project which he reportedly failed to implement.
He says he should be given a chance to complete the project for the benefit of the country.
The trial continues Tuesday. 
<h2>Context:</h2>
ZPC paid $5.6 million to Intratrek Zimbabwe, in which Chivayo is a director, for pre-commencement works in the construction of a $200 million solar power plant in Gwanda. Chivayo failed to deliver.
The case spilt into court and in 2019 the High Court <a href="https://news.pindula.co.zw/2018/12/14/uproar-as-wicknell-chivayos-company-wins-25-million-zesa-lawsuit/">prohibited ZPC from cancelling the contract</a> and suing to recover the money paid to Chivayo’s company. The ruling left ZPC with the onus of paying him $25 million for breach of contract or allowing his company to proceed with the project.
The Supreme Court overturned the ruling.

Wicknell Chivayo Says The Gwanda Solar Project Tender Tainted His Image

The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC), a ZESA subsidiary has released Power Column Q3, 2021 which details the progress made on several projects dotted across the country. Pindula News presents the report.

<h2>Power Column Q3 2021</h2>
ZPC noted general improvement in generation in the 3rd quarter of 2021, after having sent out a total of 2,203GWh, thereby surpassing its target by 7.69%.  Kariba Power Station contributed 64% of the total energy production in the period under review, with 5% exported to Nam Power.  Hwange Power Station supplied 33% and the small thermals 3%. Generation was constrained at thermal stations mainly because of low plant availability caused by aged plant.
As at the end of the third quarter Kariba Power Station had utilised 17.645Bm3 of water leaving 3.355Bm3 for generation for the rest of the year. Zambezi River Authority allocated 30Bm3 to Kariba North and Kariba South Power Stations for generation in 2021. Kariba South Power Station had an annual water allocation of 15Bm3, which corresponds to an annual average capacity of 381MW. The water allocation was later reviewed to 42Bm3 which translates to 21Bm3 per utility. This increased the Annual Average Capacity from 381MW to 550MW.  The lake level dropped from 482.70m at the beginning of the quarter to 480.93m at the end of September 2021. This represented a 1.77m decrease in lake level over the quarter. The lake level at the end of the same quarter last year was 479.85m.
The Hwange Expansion Project continues to progress well, having commenced the third quarter at 67.97% and closing at 72.18%.  The project is however behind schedule due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic which resulted in low levels of manpower on site as a result of travel restrictions. 
ZPC has also made headway on the Deka Upgradation Project. The Contractor has mobilized to site to commence the project, with equipment at ports of entry to Zimbabwe and setting up of the contractors’ camp and other preparations for construction in progress. 
Stringing of the new transmission and distribution line from Hwange to Sherwood substation under the Expansion Project commenced in July 2021, and a distance of approximately 120km out of 360km has been covered to date.  With this exercise in place, a number of households also known as Project Affected Persons (PAPs) located on the transmission line wayleave from Hwange to Insukamini are in the process of being relocated under the ZPC Relocation Action Programme (RAP).  
Construction of new houses for the affected parties commenced in August this year at Hope Fountain, Mazwi, Kloof, Stevenson Farm, Epping Forest, Sawmills, Gwayi Siding, Bambanani, and Chezhou sites.  Completion is expected by December 2021.
Meanwhile, ZPC is also working on the relocation of Ingagula residents. Land has already been acquired in Empumalanga low and medium density for the relocation project and construction is expected to commence in the first quarter of 2022.
ZPC remains grateful to the men and women who remain committed to keep the lights on, despite all the challenges that the organization faces. The world has had to fight the covid-19 pandemic which threatened millions of lives over the past two years, and we have not been spared from this scourge.  We remember the souls of our departed colleagues.  May their souls rest in peace.

Power Column Q3 2021: ZESA Updates On Projects, Evictions

The Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) has cancelled the US$133 million tender for the repowering of Munyati Power Station awarded to an Indian company, Jaguar Overseas.
The firm failed to secure funding for the project, four years after winning the bid. The Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (PRAZ) has since given ZPC the authority to approach the next bidder in line with the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets (PPDAP) Act.
Jaguar Overseas was in 2015 awarded the tender to re-power the plant. The project inludes replacing 15 boilers with modern technology, refurbishing 2×50 megawatt steam turbines, overhauling cooling towers, water treatment plant, civil works, dredging and rehabilitating a weir on Munyati River for water supplies to the thermal plant. Jaguar Overseas has failed to secure funding to rehabilitate the power plant. The Indian firm only managed to raise only 15 percent of the required funding.
