The ZWG (ZiG) inflation rate has surged to 37.2% month on month in October, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), announced on Friday.
This rise follows the rapid depreciation of the exchange rate, with the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) devaluing the ZiG official rate by 43% in September.
Presenting the latest data Friday, ZIMSTAT Prices Statistics Manager, Thomas Chikadaya said:

The month-on-month inflation rate was 37.2 per cent in October 2024, gaining 31.4 percentage points on the September 2024 rate of 5.8 per cent.
This means that prices as measured by the all-items ZWG CPI, increased by an average of 37.2 percent between September 2024 and October 2024.

In September, before the devaluation, consumer inflation was at 5.8% month on month in local currency terms.
The year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for the month of October 2024 as measured by the all-items USD Consumer Price Index (CPI), was 4.1 per cent.

The bank changed the money rate in September, and that made things worse. People in Zimbabwe had to pay a lot more for things compared to the year before. Zimbabwe Inflation Surges To 37.2% After ZiG Currency Devaluation

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) has reported a decline in new vehicle registrations in the second quarter, with only 15,890 vehicles registered for the first time compared to 24,428 in the first quarter. ZimStat said:

According to data from Central Vehicle Registry (CVR), vehicles registration up to 2 300kg have decreased from 18 539 to 12 296, which is a -33,7% decrease, whereas heavy vehicles 2 301-4 600kg have also decreased from 1 812 to 903, which is a -33,6% decrease.

ZimStat also revealed that road accident deaths increased by 9,6% during the same period. It said:

According to Zimbabwe Republic Police [ZRP] PGHQ [Police General Headquarters] Statistics Department, in the first quarter of 2024, 2 625 injuries were reported, whereas 448 deaths were recorded, whereas in the second quarter of 2024, 594 deaths were recorded and 2 783 injuries, which shows a 9,6% increase.

ZimStat reported that at national level, 55 136 candidates undertook the certificate of competency test during the second quarter of the year, with 50,4% succeeding. Said the Agency:

In all provinces except Harare (55,9%) and Mashonaland East (59,3%), proportions of candidates who passed certificate of competency tests during second quarter of 2024 were less than 50%.

ZimStat reported that all airports across the country recorded increases in the number of flights during the same period.
For example, Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport recorded 6,717 flights, representing an 18.7% increase from 5,659 flights in the first quarter of 2024.

In the second quarter of the year, Zimbabwe saw a decrease in new vehicle registrations and an increase in road accident deaths. ZimStat reported that fewer vehicles were registered and more people were dying in accidents. However, more candidates were taking competency tests, with over 50% passing. Also, all airports in the country had more flights. For example, Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport saw an 18.7% increase in flights. Overall, there were fewer new vehicles, more accidents, more people taking tests, and more flights in Zimbabwe during this time.

Zimbabwe Sees Drop In New Vehicle Registrations For Second Quarter

Zimbabwe’s month-on-month inflation surged to 5.8% in September 2024, up from 1.4% in August, driven largely by the sharp depreciation of the newly introduced currency, the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG).
Since its launch in April 2024, the ZiG has faced increasing volatility, exacerbated by a shortage of US dollars in the market.
The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has attributed the currency’s decline largely to speculative activities.
This 4.4 percentage point increase in month-on-month inflation marks the most significant rise since the ZiG’s introduction.
According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), the all-items Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 5.8% on average between August and September 2024.
ZIMSTAT said the month-on-month inflation rate reflects the percentage change in the price index compared to the previous month.
For September 2024, the weighted CPI for food and non-alcoholic beverages was the primary contributor to this increase, accounting for 1.5% of the total change in the inflation rate. ZIMSTAT said:

This means that prices as measured by the all-items ZWG CPI, increased by an average of 5.8% between August 2024 and September 2024.

ZIMSTAT reported that the Food Poverty Line for an individual in September 2024 was set at ZiG446.56.
The Food Poverty Line indicates the minimum amount of money necessary for a person to access a daily energy intake of 2,100 calories, ensuring basic nutritional needs are met. ZIMSTAT said:

The Total Consumption Poverty Line for one person in September 2024 was ZiG681,79. The Total Consumption Poverty Line is derived by adding the non-food consumption expenditures of an individual below the food poverty line.

Zimbabwe's money worth less in September causing prices to go up. The new currency, Zimbabwe Gold, is losing value. People are buying and selling it quickly, making it less valuable. Zimbabwe’s Monthly Inflation Rate Surges To 5.8% In September

The introduction of the Zimbabwe Gold (ZiG) currency in April 2024 has had a stabilising effect on the country’s inflation rate, according to the latest data from the Zimbabwe Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT).
On Friday, ZIMSTAT said that in ZiG, month-on-month inflation was 0% in June (from -2.4% in May), and in USD terms, year-on-year inflation was 3.8% in June, from 3.5% in May.
When measured in US dollar terms, the year-on-year inflation rate stood at 3.8% in June, up slightly from 3.5% in May.
ZIMSTAT also reported that the weighted monthly inflation rate – which combines the price changes in both ZiG and USD – was -0.2% in June, up from -0.6% in May.
The year-on-year ZiG inflation will only be measured starting next April, as that will mark one year since the currency’s introduction. Said ZIMSTAT:

The month-on-month inflation rate for June 2024, was -0.2%, gaining 0.4 percentage points on the May 2024 rate of -0.6%. The month-on-month inflation rate for June 2024 was 0.0%. This means that prices as measured by the all-items ZiG CPI, remained constant on average between May 2024 and June 2024.

The agency the Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) which captures all the expenses required for an individual to meet survival needs in June 2024 was ZiG 623.40.
The Food Poverty Line (FPL) which represents the amount of money that an individual requires to afford a daily minimum energy intake of 2,100 calories stood at ZiG 399.83. Said ZIMSTAT:

ZiG Inflation Remains Stable At 0% In June 2024 - ZIMSTAT

According to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), an average family of six now needs a minimum of ZWL$5.4 million to cover their monthly expenses. This represents a 65.8% increase compared to the figures recorded last month.
ZIMSTAT also revealed that the Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) for one person was ZW$ 916,225.50 in March 2024. Said ZIMSTAT:

This means that an individual required that much to purchase both non-food and food items as of March 2024 in order not to be deemed poor.
This represents an increase of 65.8 per cent when compared to the February 2024 figure of ZWL$552,745.80.
</blockquote>
The Food Poverty Line (FPL) for one person in March 2024 was ZWL$701,236.89. This means that the minimum needs basket cost that much per person in March 2024. This represents an increase of 62.2 per cent over the February 2024 figure of ZWL$432,454.90.
The Zimbabwe dollar has plummeted over the past few weeks which economic commentators have blamed on the excessive printing of money by the central bank that is not backed by value.
On Friday, March 22, the Zimbabwean dollar crossed a notable threshold, falling below 20,000 against the US dollar. This decline occurred after it had previously dropped below the 10,000 level in late January.
The local currency was trading at 20,389 per greenback, indicating a cumulative decline of 70% since the beginning of the year.
Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion Minister, Mthuli Ncube, recently Zimbabwe will always have a local currency even though currently, the US dollar is used for 80% of all commerce in the country.
Ncube said the monetary policy statement (MPS), which is overdue by two months, will be released soon, adding that there are ongoing consultations with experts within the government and other stakeholders.

Zimbabwean Family Of Six Now Requires $5.4 Million Per Month

Zimbabwean annual inflation rose to 55.3% this month from 47.6% in February, which is a seventh-month high, reported <a href="https://www.bnnbloomberg.ca/zimbabwe-inflation-rate-hits-seven-month-high-as-finance-minister-pledges-to-act-1.2052151">Bloomberg</a>.
The announcement by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) on Wednesday, March 27, comes days after the Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion, Mthuli Ncube, pledged to address price increases that are being fueled by the country’s free-falling currency.
Prices rose 4.9% in the month, compared with 5.4% in February.
According to ZIMSTAT, the main contributors to the surge were the cost of food and utilities including housing.
Ncube said at the weekend that the authorities are aware of ongoing price instability in Zimbabwe and monetary policymakers are preparing a statement that will deal with the challenges. He said:

We are aware that there is currency instability in the main, which then impacts prices. As government, we will act.

The Zimbabwean dollar has depreciated against the United States dollar every trading day this year.
It weakened 72% in that period, making it the world’s second-worst-performing currency, after the Lebanese pound. Said Ncube:

In the not-so-distant future, we will be able to make the relevant announcement through a monetary policy statement from the central bank.
We will make sure that we do the right thing and that the new announcement will engender the stability that is needed because we will put in a monetary mechanism that will ensure that we have stability going forward.

In 2019, the government reintroduced the Zimbabwean dollar after a decade of dollarization. However, the currency rapidly lost value, leading to challenges.
Recently, the central bank and finance ministry have been actively working on additional measures to stabilize the Zimbabwean dollar.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa mentioned the possibility of introducing a “structured currency,” although details were not provided.
Despite these efforts, confidence in the local currency remains low, and economic agents continue to prefer the U.S. dollar.

Zimbabwe’s Inflation Rate At Its Highest In Seven Months

Zimbabwe has experienced a 21.5% surge in crime cases, rising from 182,427 in the previous quarter to 221,596 in the most recent period, the latest Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) figures have revealed.
The national crime rate has also increased, reaching 1,459.9 crimes per 100,000 people, compared to 1,201.8 in the previous quarter.
The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency compiles crime data based on police records, focusing on reported incidents.
 In the 2023 fourth quarter crime statistics report, ZimStat’s manager-social statistics, Tinashe Mwadiwa, highlighted 326 intentional homicide cases. He said (<a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200024555/zim-crime-rate-surges">via NewsDay</a>):
<blockquote>
The police recorded 221 596 offences throughout October to December 2023. This represents a 21,5% increase from 182 427 offences recorded in the third quarter.
The national crime rate was 1 459,9 per 100 000 people, an uptick from 1 201,8 per 100 000 observed in the previous quarter.
Assaults and threats category was the most frequent act causing harm or intending to cause harm to the person. The rate for assaults and threats stood at 195,9 per 100 000 population.
</blockquote>
Mwadiwa said there were 37 602 cases of theft recorded in the fourth quarter, indicating a rate of 247,7 per 100 000 population. He said:
<blockquote>
The unlawful acts involving alcohol, tobacco or other controlled substances category was the most prevalent act involving controlled drugs or other psychoactive substances.
</blockquote>
According to the ZimStat report, the incidence of unlawful acts involving alcohol, tobacco, or other controlled substances has reached 4,886 cases, corresponding to a rate of 32.2 per 100,000 population<a aria-label="1: 32.2 per 100,000 population" class="ac-anchor sup-target" data-citationid="9e3b5597-084b-f704-02be-914d3336861f-6" href="https://www.zimstat.co.zw/wp-content/uploads/Demography/crime/2023/2023_2ndQ_Crime_in_Zimbabwe.pdf" rel="noopener" target="_blank">1</a>.
Additionally, fraud accounted for 3,235 cases, resulting in a rate of 21.3 per 100,000 population. 
Furthermore, 48 cases of corruption were recorded, representing a rate of 0.3 per 100,000 population. Said Mwadiwa:
<blockquote>
There were 3 091 cases of sexual violence recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023, representing a crime rate of 20,4 per 100 000 population.
The number of offences recorded under Other acts against public order, authority and provisions of the State’ was 7 548, translating to a crime rate of 49,7 per 100 000 population.
During the 2023 fourth quarter, 88 967 cases of non-injurious traffic violations were recorded resulting in a crime rate of 586,1 per 100 000 population.

Mwadiwa said at the close of the fourth quarter of 2023, Zimbabwe’s prison facilities housed a total of 23,017 prisoners. Among these inmates, 17,050 (74.1%) were sentenced and 5,967 (25.9%) were unsentenced.
Interestingly, the age distribution of new male and female prisoners revealed some patterns; the highest proportion of new prisoners fell within the 25-29 age group, followed by those aged between 20 and 24.
Beyond the age group of 25-29, the number of new prisoners gradually declined with increasing age.

Zimbabwe Records 21.5% Surge In Crime Cases

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) has dismissed allegations that figures on deaths registered in the country are inaccurate.
ZIMSTAT insists the number remains accurate regardless of whether the deaths are registered officially or not.
This comes after stakeholders questioned the accuracy of mortality figures collected during the 2022 Population and Housing Census.
Speaking in an interview with <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200022836/our-figures-are-correct-says-zimstat">NewsDay</a>, on Wednesday, 07 February, ZIMSTAT demography and social statistics director Aluwisio Mukavhi said:
<blockquote>
We want to set the record straight as far as our census is concerned. The census figures are correct with regard to mortality numbers.
What happened is that during the census, our enumerators were approaching households and they were asking about deaths which would have occurred in the past 12 months of the census.
After that, we would ask if the death is registered or not and we would further ask the sex of the deceased so that at the end of the day we can calculate the numbers by sex.
We also capture their age, we also capture the issue to do with maternal mortality so that we can calculate maternal mortality which are deaths due to maternal causes.
So, that was the whole idea of collecting this data so that we can calculate mortality rates.
There are under-five mortality, neonatal mortality, post-natal mortality and maternal mortality.
</blockquote>
Mukavhi said there is a difference between data collection and official registration. He said:
<blockquote>
So going to the issue of distortion of numbers due to registration or non-registration of a death, those two things are different, they are not linked.
If at the household level let’s say we have captured that two people have died, then if the deaths are not registered, it does not distort the cumulative number of the deaths which would have occurred during the census period.
The numbers are accurate, the registration is something else. For example, if 10 deaths would have occurred, then they remain that number regardless of registration status.
The distortion which needs to be corrected is that “the census figures might be distorted because some deaths were not registered” — it is not correct.
</blockquote>
ZIMSTAT’s responsibilities include gathering data from various sources, including surveys, censuses, administrative records, and other relevant data sets.
However, some citizens view data released by ZIMSTAT with scepticism as there is a general distrust of figures released by government departments.

Zimbabwe’s inflation rate rose in January 2024 as a depreciating Zimbabwe dollar pushed up the prices of goods and services.
The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) said the annual inflation rate for January rose to 34.8% from 26.5% in December 2023.
According to <a href="https://businesstimes.co.zw/inflation-spikes-following-zim-dollar-rout/">Business Time</a>s, the Zimbabwe dollar street rate on Wednesday, 31 January was between ZWL$16 000:US$1 and ZWL$17 000:US$1, up from ZWL$8 000 at the beginning of the month.
On the formal market such as the willing seller-willing buyer, the Zimbabwe dollar was trading at ZWL$10 152: US$1, up from about ZWL$5 900 at the start of January 2024.
According to ZIMSTAT, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was 120.67 in January 2024, 113.22 in December 2023 and in January 2023 the index was 89.49. Between January 2023 and January 2024, the index rose by 31.18.
The month-on-month food and non-alcoholic beverage inflation rate was 15.0% in January 2024, before gaining by 6.4 % points on the December 2023 rate of 8.4 %.
The January 2024 month-on-month non-food inflation rate was 2.5%, shedding 0.4% points on the December rate of 2.9%.
Economist Prosper Chitambara warned that this year’s inflation rate is likely going to continue to rise. He said:

It is going to increase maybe for the next few months in the short term, then in the medium and long term it is going to depend on what the agriculture sector or agriculture performance if we have good, a normal season then there will be lesser pressure on food prices but if the output is below normal that is going to put a lot of pressure on food prices.

He also said inflation undermines economic confidence and reduces economic competitiveness. Said Chitambara:
<blockquote>
Inflation is an indirect tax on incomes so it affects businesses and consumers alike in that it causes an erosion of incomes, it also weakens confidence in the economy, it creates uncertainties and self-feeling expectations which then drive the inflation spiral.
So inflation is not good for the economy, it ultimately erodes our competitiveness as an economy.
</blockquote>
Inflation is the rate of increase in prices over a given time. It results from general increases in the costs of the factors of production and/or from an excess of aggregate demand relative to aggregate supply.

Inflation Surges As Zimbabwe Dollar Loses Value

More than 40 per cent of Christians in Mashonaland West Province are members of apostolic sects, a development that some social commentators have attributed to rising poverty and disease caused by grand corruption and maladministration in the public sector under President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration.
Apostolic sects or white garment churches are known for their claims to deep spirituality and ability to miraculously change the fortunes of their adherents for the better and cure all manner of illnesses.
According to the latest Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZimStat) data, Christianity is the main religion constituting 79.9% of Mashonaland West Province’s population.
ZimStat demographic analysis manager, Perfect Makumbe, said of the Christian majority, 41.9% belonged to different apostolic sects.
Makumbe was presenting the 2022 Population and Housing Census provincial profiles, district data sheets and gross domestic product (GDP) during a dissemination workshop held in Chinhoyi on Tuesday. Said Makumbe (<a href="https://www.newzimbabwe.com/zim-poverty-drives-40-of-mash-west-christians-into-apostolic-sects-seeking-miracles/">via NewZimbabwe.com</a>):
<blockquote>
According to the census results, Christians constituted 79.9% of the population of Mashonaland West while a significant 12.1% did not identify with any religion.
Now looking at the Christians, and here we are saying those that identified as Roman Catholics, protestants and Pentecostals, 41.9% belonged to apostolic sects.
</blockquote>
Makumbe, however, did not elaborate on why nearly half of the Christians in Mash West have joined white garment churches.
Givemore Njovani, a social commentator, told NewZimbabwe.com that poverty and joblessness are driving people to join the white garment churches as they had become hopeless in the face of seemingly unending economic hardships. Said Njovani:

The only logical conclusion as to why we have had a massive shift of churchgoers, particularly Christians, going to apostolic sects is that the masses have become hopeless and are seeking miracles because the leaders have failed dismally to provide better livelihoods.
Apostolic sects give holy water and anointed stones which are believed to bring good tidings and miracles.
</blockquote>
During the data presentation workshop, ZimStat also claimed that Mash West’s unemployment rate stood at a curious 14.1 %, contrary to the suggestion that about 90% of Zimbabweans are unemployed. Said ZimStat:

When we dealt with the unemployment rate, we used the international labour law’s definition of unemployment and not street definitions.
The provincial unemployment rate was at 14.2 % and not those numbers we hear elsewhere.

White garment churches, also known as Vapositori, are a group of African Independent Churches (AICs) characterised by their white garments and their practice of faith healing and prophecy.
The Vapositori churches have been involved in party politics, particularly in favour of ZANU PF, and have played a significant role in ZANU PF’s continued rule since independence in 1980 to the present.

40% Of Christians In Mashonaland West Are Members Of Apostolic Sects - ZIMSTAT

Russia has overtaken China to become Zimbabwe’s second major source of imports, behind South Africa, according to statistics released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT).
Three countries, that is, South Africa (34.7%), the Russian Federation (15.2%) and China (11.9%), accounted for around sixty-two percent of Zimbabwe’s total import value of US$901.5 million in October 2023.
Below are the trade statistics released by ZIMSTAT this Monday, 27 November:
External Trade Statistics: October 2023 – The total value of exported goods in October 2023 was US$831.9 million, representing a 22.7% increase from US$678.1 million reported in September 2023.
Imports for October: 2023 amounted to US$901.5 million, an increase of 16.7% from US$772.2 million recorded in September 2023.
The trade deficit for October 2023 was US$69.6 million, translating to a 26.4% decline from the deficit of US$94.6 million recorded in September 2023.
Sept 2023 exports value = USD678.1 million Oct 2023’s exports value = USD831.9 million. Among the country’s major export destinations in October 2023 were China (38.4%,) and the United Arab Emirates (22.8%), South Africa (16.3%).
The three countries accounted for around seventy-seven percent of the total export value of USD831.9 million.
Sept 2023 imports value = USD772.7 million Oct 2023 imports value = USD901.5 million.
Zimbabwe’s major source countries of imports in October 2023 were South Africa (34.7%), the Russian Federation (15.2%) and China (11.9%).
The three countries accounted for around sixty-two percent of the total import value of USD901.5 million.

South Africa, Russia, China Account For Over 60% Of Zimbabwe's Imports

More than one million Zimbabweans who had left the country returned to settle home permanently during the first half of 2023, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) has said.
According to the ZimStat’s Quarterly International Migration Statistics report seen by <a href="https://www.sundaymail.co.zw/one-million-zimbos-return-home">The Sunday Mail</a>, 1.03 million Zimbabweans “who had declared themselves as emigrants when they left the country” had returned home between January and June.
The report states that about 378 000 locals relocated back to Zimbabwe during the first three months of the year, while 655 377 citizens returned home between April and June.
ZimStat classifies returning expatriates as “returning former residents who had declared themselves as emigrants when leaving the country but, nevertheless, remained away for more than one year”.
However, the immigration figures do not account for Zimbabwean expatriates who did not move to foreign countries on a permanent basis.
The report also noted a significant rise in the number of visitors from abroad who came to Zimbabwe. It says:

There were 331 982 visitors from abroad who came to Zimbabwe during the second quarter of 2023, compared to 231 107 in the second quarter of 2022, representing an increase of 43.6 percent.
There were 655 377 residents returning from abroad, compared to 250 147 in the second quarter of 2022. This indicates an increase of almost 162 percent.

The proportion of visitors who came for holiday was 51.4 percent, while 26.2 percent came for business purposes. Reads the report:

Visitors who came to Zimbabwe for educational purposes in the second quarter of 2023 decreased by 172,2 percent from the second quarter of 2022.
There were 6 382 education visitors in the quarter ending June 2023, compared to 2 345 in the quarter ending June 2022.
The number of holiday visitors in the second quarter of 2023 increased from a figure of 133 427 in the second quarter of 2022 to 170 474 in the quarter ending June 2023, showing an increase of 27.8 percent.

Department of Immigration spokesperson Memory Mugwagwa told The Sunday Mail that the rise in the number of visitors coming into the country is attributed to “the policies of ZimBho and other tourism promotion activities”.

One Million Zimbabweans Return Home - ZimStat

Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) director general Taguma Mahonde was on Monday granted bail by Harare magistrate Marewanazvo Gofa following his arrest by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) last Tuesday, <a href="https://www.zimlive.com/fraud-accused-zimstat-director-general-freed-on-bail/">reported ZimLive</a>.
Mahonde (53) faces fraud charges for allegedly claiming a US$4 000 school fees allowance for a child who does not exist.
In granting him bail, the Magistrate dismissed prosecutors’ argument that Mahonde was not an ideal candidate for bail as he was facing a serious offence. Said Gofa:

The seriousness of the offence is not a valid reason to bar this court from granting the accused bail.
The State witness even agreed that there is no offence since even the board passed the resolution proposed by the accused.
The accused has a right to be seen as innocent until proven guilty.
This court therefore finds that he is a suitable candidate for bail.
Therefore, the accused shall pay US$200 bail to the clerk of court, surrender his travel documents, not interfere with witnesses and reside at his given address.

Prosecutors alleged that on 24 June 2019, Mahonde entered into a contract of employment with ZIMSTAT as DG and an education allowance for himself and his children were part of his benefits.
On 03 September 2021, the ZIMSTAT board discussed Mahonde’s education allowance and resolved under Resolution BR500321/16 that the education allowance for the DG be reviewed upwards to US$800 per child per term for a maximum of three children.
Mahonde allegedly misrepresented to ZIMSTAT that he was claiming fees for three children for five terms to the amount of US$2 400 per term, despite the fact that he had officially claimed for two children initially.
In a bid to cover up the offence, Mahonde allegedly paid $756 047 on March 21 and 22 this year as a refund for claiming US$4 000 for a non-existent child.
However, the amount he paid back amounted to only US$826 using the rate of the day he paid.
ZIMSTAT head of internal audit, Claudious Matiza allegedly uncovered the offence and he was suspended by Mahonde in order to frustrate the investigation.
As a result, Mahonde was charged with contravening the Prevention of Corruption Act and an alternative charge of obstruction of justice.

ZIMSTAT Director General, Taguma Mahonde, Granted US$200 Bail

Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) director general, Taguma Mahonde, is set to appear in court this Thursday, 28 September, following his arrest on fraud allegations.
Mahonde was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) over allegations of flouting tender procedures in the disposal of official vehicles, and fraud involving the claiming of school fees for his children.
ZACC spokesperson, Thandiwe Mlobane, on Wednesday, told <a href="https://www.herald.co.zw/zimstat-director-general-mahonde-arrested-for-fraud/">The Herald</a> that they are still conducting investigations. She said:

I confirm that ZACC arrested the director general of ZimStat yesterday, 26 September 2023, in connection with the fraudulent claim of school fees for his children.
Further investigations are continuing in relation to flouting tender procedures.

Mlobane said Mahonde brought a board resolution to ZACC that was made last week appearing to be authorising him to claim school fees, but in reality, the recent resolution differed from an initial resolution made last year. She said:

The accused brought a resolution done last week by the board after realising that ZACC had completed investigations on the issue, authorising accused to claim the amounts he claimed since 2021 when he started the fraudulent claims.
This is despite the fact that they had made a resolution in 2022 on the issue of school fees for the accused’s children. He will be appearing in court tomorrow, 28 September 2023.

The Herald reported sources as saying Mahonde allegedly claimed money as school fees allowances for his children but has failed to provide receipts or invoices from the schools to show that the claims were legitimate.
He also allegedly acquired top-of-the-range service vehicles for a pittance which had the effect of prejudicing the State of revenue.
Mahonde allegedly bought two vehicles before the expiry of five years which is a violation of the principles governing senior officials’ acquisition of vehicles.

ZIMSTAT Director General, Taguma Mahonde, To Appear In Court

Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) Director General, Taguma Mahonde has been arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) for alleged corruption and corporate malpractices.
ZACC spokesperson Commissioner Thandiwe Mlobane confirmed the development in a telephone interview with <a href="https://nehandaradio.com/2023/09/26/exclusive-zimstat-director-general-taguma-mahonde-arrested-by-zacc-over-alleged-corruption/">Nehanda Radio</a>. She said:

Director General of Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency, Taguma Mahonde has been arrested by ZACC for fraud. Investigations are still ongoing.
</blockquote>
It is alleged that Mahonde bought his service car, a Toyota Land Cruiser, which was originally priced at US$28 000, for only US$300 for the services rendered in three years.
He was also given a Land Rover Discovery which was bought in 2021. As a result, he ended up owning two vehicles in five years which is against principles of good governance.
Mahonde allegedly requested and received school fees allowances in US dollars for the 2023 first term despite that all employees at ZIMSTAT were being paid salaries in Zimbabwe dollars.
He was allegedly working in cahoots with the company’s Finance Director Romania Nyahwa to defraud the company of thousands of dollars.

ZIMSTAT Director General Taguma Mahonde Arrested

Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) on Monday, 21 August said annual inflation fell to 77.2 percent in August from 101.3 percent in July.
ZIMSTAT also said the month-on-month inflation rate in August was -6.2 percent gaining 9.1 percentage points on last month’s rate of -15.3 percent. ZIMSTAT said:
<blockquote>The year-on-year inflation rate for the month of August 2023 as measured by the all items Consumer Price Index was 77.2 percent…

ZIMSTAT said the Food Poverty Line for one person in August was $70 461.00. The Total Consumption Poverty Line for one person was $91 063.00 in August 2023.

Annual Inflation Falls To 77.2% In August

Zimbabwe’s annual inflation slowed to 101.3% in July 2023 from 175.8% in June 2023, the latest data from the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) shows.
ZIMSTAT also said the month-on-month inflation for July was 89.8 percentage points lower to close in negative territory, -15.3% from 74.5% recorded in June.
ZIMSTAT measures inflation using a weighted average of items priced in Zimbabwean dollars and United States dollars.
In May 2023, ZIMSTAT said the country’s month-on-month inflation rose to 15.7% after gaining 13.3 percentage points on the April 2023 rate of 2.4%.
The year-on-year inflation rose to 86.5% in May from 75.6% in April, said ZIMSTAT.

Zimbabwe's Monthly Inflation Drops To  Minus 15 Percent - ZIMSTAT

Zimbabwe’s annual inflation jumped to 175.8% in June from 86.5% in May, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) said on Monday, 26 June.
Reflecting the sharp price hikes over the past few weeks, month-on-month inflation went up by a significant 58.8 percentage points in June to 74.5%, from 15.7% in May.
ZIMSTAT measures inflation using a weighted average of items priced in Zimbabwean dollars and United States dollars.
In March, economist Prosper Chitambara said that using the blended inflation rate is problematic.  He said:

The issue is a critical one because companies do not account in blended terms but exclusively in USDs or ZWL so it becomes an issue to have the blended rate as the benchmark inflation.
Interest rate calculation for those borrowing or collective bargaining is going to complicate things.
</blockquote>
Chitambara said the publication of both sets of inflation rates (Blended and ZWL) should continue because most employees earn ZWL and would need to use the rate for collective bargaining.
He argued that companies also report in ZWL and will continue to need the ZWL inflation in order to prepare inflation-adjusted figures.
Just over a week ago, Professor of applied economics at the Johns Hopkins University, Steve Hanke, said Zimbabwe’s year-on-year inflation had reached 1 298 percent.

Zimbabwe's Annual Inflation Jumps To 175.8% In June - ZIMSTAT

The rate of extreme poverty in Zimbabwe fell to 42 percent in 2022, from 43 percent in 2021.
This was said by the Zimbabwe Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) on Friday.
The latest figures follow the conclusion of the high-frequency telephone survey, known as the Rapid-Poverty Income Consumption and Expenditure Surveys (PICES) conducted by ZIMSTAT between December 2022 and January 2023.
According to the survey, the proportion of the country’s population facing severe food insecurity fell from 27 percent in July 2020 to 9 percent during the December 2022-January 2023 period. ZIMSTAT said:

In general, food insecurity falls as the country receives good and timely rains.
</blockquote>
Zimbabwe’s extreme poverty levels have been gradually falling after peaking at 49 percent at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020.
The high levels of poverty in Zimbabwe can be attributed to various factors which include hyperinflation, currency devaluation, and lack of foreign investment due to poor economic policies, chaotic land reform, drought, and climate change, as well as the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Extreme Poverty In Zimbabwe Now At 42% - ZIMSTAT

The food poverty line (FPL) per person rose to $25 170.43 in April, from $22 560.53 recorded in March 2023, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) has said.
In its latest report, ZIMSTAT also said the Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) per person rose by 11 percent in April from the March 2023 rate. ZIMSTAT:

The food poverty line (FPL) as at April 2023 was $25,170.43. This means that the minimum needs basket cost that much per person in April 2023. This represents an increase of 11.6 percent over the March 2023 figure of $22,560.53.
The Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) for Zimbabwe stood at $33,044.46 per person in April 2023. This means that an individual required that much to purchase both non-food and food items as at April 2023 in order not to be deemed poor. This represents an increase of 11.0 percent when compared to the March 2023 figure of $29,778.08.
The poverty datum lines vary by province as prices vary from place to place. The differences are explained by differences in average prices in the provinces.
The quantities of commodities consumed at base year in the minimum needs basket which is consistent with the preferences of the poor individuals and households in Zimbabwe are fixed.
The variations in the value of the basket are explained by changes in average prices.

ZIMSTAT said the food poverty line (FPL) represents the amount of money that an individual will require to afford the minimum required daily energy intake of 2 100 calories.
The agency said the TCPL of $33 044.00 represents the total income needed for an individual (with all their income added together) as a minimum for them not to be deemed poor.
If an individual does not consume more than the TCPL, he or she is deemed poor, said ZIMSTAT.

Food Poverty Line Now At $25 000 - ZIMSTAT

Ruth Labode, a Member of Parliament from Matabeleland North Province, has demanded that the Ministry of Health take immediate and drastic action to prevent child pregnancies.
This follows the release of a report by the Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (Zimstat) showing that about 700 girls under the age of 15 gave birth in the country in 2022.
Labode raised the matter in Parliament recently and requested Health Minister Vice President Constantino Chiwenga to bring a Ministerial Statement outlining his strategy to curb the scourge of child pregnancies. She said:

I am making reference to the Zimbabwe Statistics. Disaggregated data on the Distribution of Births by Age of Mother released during the launch of the Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (ZimStats) Vital Statistics Report shows that 700 girls aged 10 to 14 gave birth in 2022. What does this say about this country?
Could the Minister of Health and Child Care bring a Ministerial Statement and tell us what strategy they have to curb this scourge of teenage pregnancies? A ten-year-old is not a teenager but a baby.
</blockquote>
In response, the Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Monica Mutsvangwa, said:

This question touches a lot of Zimbabweans, in particular a lot of women. The issue of teenage pregnancies is an issue that the whole country is seized with.
The Government is seized with it and the Ministry of Health is putting a lot of strategies that they would need to articulate in this House.
I think it is in order when the Hon. Member asked for a Ministerial Statement which will articulate step by step what they are doing.
To have 700 young girls aged 10 to 14 getting pregnant is very sad. A ten-year-old is a child and what has gone wrong with our people?
This is an issue that is not going to be just dealt with by the Ministry of Health alone but by inter-ministerial strategy.
This is something that we need to understand from the Home Affairs Ministry to see how many people have been jailed or castrated if they need to be.

Mutsvangwa assured Parliament that measures will be taken to deal with the perpetrators and also asked for unity of purpose in dealing with the vice. She said:

I think there is an element of madness that needs to be dealt with; an element of cruelty or animal behavior that needs to be dealt with.
Penalties should be quite high. I would obviously take this up with my colleagues.
We need to get that report and I certainly agree with her so that at least we can work together as a country.
It is about all of us as leaders in the areas where we live. It is also about us as parents working together, united as Zimbabweans to fight against this evil.

According to Plan International, some of the causes of teenage pregnancies include a lack of information about sexual and reproductive health and rights, inadequate access to services tailored to young people, family, community and social pressure to marry, sexual violence, forced marriage, which can be both a cause and a consequence and a lack of education or school drop-out.

700 Underage Girls Gave Birth In 2022 - Zimstat

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) said the country received the bulk of its electricity imports from South Africa and Zambia in the fourth quarter of last year.
ZIMSTAT director-general Taguma Mahonde said South Africa’s power utility Eskom supplied 38.4 percent, and Zambia’s power utility, the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (ZESCO), accounted for 32.4 percent of the imported electricity for the fourth quarter.
In 2022, Zimbabwe imported a total of 2 303.6 gigawatt hours (GWh) worth of electricity, among which 681.1 GWh were imported in the fourth quarter, a 4.7 increase from 650.7 GWh imported in the third quarter.
According to ZIMSTAT, Zimbabwe generated 1 796.9 GWh in the fourth quarter, among which 1 024.2 GWh, or 57 percent, was generated at Kariba Power Station.
Zimbabwe is experiencing an acute shortage of electricity and ZESA is load-shedding consumers as well as importing from South Africa, Mozambique and Zambia.
A <a href="https://www.263chat.com/zambia-to-switch-off-zim-over-power-supply-debt/">recent report</a> claimed that ZESCO Limited was set to disconnect supply to Zimbabwe on 14 March over non-payment of US$10.7 million debt for the month of February and March.
ZETDC commercial service director Gift Ndhlovu was recently quoted as saying the overall debt to regional suppliers has increased to over US$100 million.

Zimbabwe Imports Most Electricity From South Africa, Zambia - ZIMSTAT

A report by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat) has revealed that Zimbabwean men are dying more than women throughout all age groups.
The ZimStat report was based on the 2022 population and housing census.
It revealed that 120 070 deaths were recorded during the census with 53.6% of the dead being men and 46.4% being women.
The national sex ratio at birth was 103 males per 100 females.
According to ZimStat’s 2022 preliminary national census results, females constitute the majority of the population, numbering 7 889 421 or 52%, compared to the male population of 7 289 588 (48%).
ZimStat also established that life expectancy for females now stands at 68 years compared to male life expectancy which is 61.2 years. Reads the report:

A total of 120 070 deaths were recorded during the census. Male deaths constituted 53.6% of the total deaths recorded during the census.

Throughout all age groups, males had higher mortality rates compared to females.
Speaking to <a href="https://www.newsday.co.zw/local-news/article/200008829/more-men-dying-than-women-zimstat">NewsDay</a>, Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike women and children are prioritised in the provision of primary health care. He said:

There is a particular focus in primary healthcare on women and children due to their vulnerability and the fact that their ill health affects the wider community.
Apart from the general inputs that all people need for health, women also need services to support safe reproductive health, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of infections such as HIV, child delivery and care, including nutrition during pregnancy.
The spread of health information, improvement of nutrition, safe living and community environments are key to disease prevention amongst men.
Prevention and management of common diseases also depends on early detection and treatment.
We are also aware that unhealthy lifestyles such as smoking cigarettes and alcohol abuse are a lot more prevalent in men compared to women.

More Men Dying Than Women In All Age Groups, Says ZimStat

About one-fifth of Zimbabwean youths aged 16 to 34 do not have National Identity Documents (IDs).
According to Zimbabwe Statistical Agency (Zimstat) Director General, Taguma Mahonde, an estimated 21.1 percent, which translates to 951,994.653 of youths aged 16 to 34 from the 4,511,823 that were recorded during the 2022 population and housing census, do not have IDs.
Mahonde revealed this during the launch of the latest Vital Statics report Volume 1.
<a href="https://healthtimes.co.zw/2023/03/13/over-900000-zim-youths-aged-16-34-dont-have-national-ids/">Health Times</a> reported that the report aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the civil registration and vital statistics situation in Zimbabwe based on available data from the 2022 Population and Housing Census. Said Mahonde:

Of the 8,721,947 persons aged 16 and above, 87.9 percent were ever issued with IDs.
The proportion of the population aged 16 and above ever issued with IDs was 92.0 percent for urban areas compared to 84.9 percent for rural areas.
In urban areas, the proportion was 91.1 percent for females compared to 93.1 percent for males.
The total number of youths aged 16 to 34 was 4,511,823. Of these, 21.1 percent did not have IDs.

He said a total of 439,458 live births were recorded during the 12 months preceding the census night, of which 27.6 percent (120,542) were by women aged 20 to 24.
A total of 69,335 adolescent females aged 10 to 19 had live births 12 months preceding the census night.
The national sex ratio at birth was 103 males per 100 females.
A total of 120,070 deaths were recorded during the Census. Male deaths constituted 53.6 percent of the total deaths recorded during the census.
Throughout all age groups, males had higher mortality rates compared to females.

One Million Zimbabwean Youths Aged 16-34 Do Not Have National IDs

The Minister of Finance and Economic Development Mthuli Ncube on Friday announced that from now, inflation will be measured using a weighted average of items priced in Zimbabwean dollars and United States dollars.
According to Statutory Instrument 27 of 2023, “… ‘rate of inflation’ means the general increase in price levels of goods and services measured as a weighted average based on the use of Zimbabwean dollars and United States dollars over a given period of time.”
Using the blended rate, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) said the year-on-year inflation for February 2023 was 92.3% from 101.5% in January.
Previously the rate of inflation was based only on items in Zimbabwean dollars.
Before today’s move to measure the blended inflation rate, ZIMSTAT had measured annual inflation at 229.8% in January and 243.8% in December.
The government reintroduced the Zimbabwean dollar in 2019 after a decade of dollarisation.
In 2020, the multi-currency system was re-introduced and since then, the United States dollar has progressively become the dominant currency in domestic transactions, with USD usage now over 75% in the economy.
In 2022, the government said the multi-currency system would be maintained for a further five years.

Govt Adopts "Blended" Inflation Rate Based On USD, Zim Dollar

Zimbabwe’s year-on-year inflation has fallen to 268.8% in October from 280.4% in September, according to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZimStat).
The latest figures from ZimStat also reveal that the monthly inflation for October is 3.2%, down from the September rate of 3.5%. ZimStat said:

The month-on-month inflation rate in October 2022 was 3.2 percent shedding 0.3 percentage points on the September 2022 rate of 3.5 percent.
The year-on-year inflation rate (annual percentage change) for the month of October 2022 as measured by the all items Consumer Price Index (CPI) stood at 268.8 percent.
The CPI for the month ending October 2022 stood at 13,113.95 compared to 12,713.12 in September 2022 and 3,555.90 in October 2021.

Zimbabwe's Annual Inflation Slows Down

More than 1 500 women died while giving birth in Zimbabwe in the last 12 months, according to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT).
The data is based on survey results collected during the 2022 population and housing census.
Presenting the report on mortality and orphanhood in Harare on Tuesday, ZIMSTAT director-general Taguma Mahonde said:

A total of 1 589 maternal deaths were reported against 437 478 live births giving a national maternal mortality ratio (MMR) — the number of maternal deaths per live birth, multiplied by a conventional factor of 100 000 — of 363 deaths per 100 000.
Most worrying is that if you try to understand what the MMR figure of 363 deaths per 100 000 means, we have an average of four women who are dying every day while they are giving birth.
From the maternal death surveillance and response programmes, we know that the main causes being given are eclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) which is largely preventable.
Furthermore, MMR was higher in rural areas (402 deaths per 100 000 live births) than in urban areas (298 per 100 000 live births).

United Nations Population Fund programmes specialist Piason Mlambo said the statistics showed that Zimbabwe recorded an average of four daily deaths during labour. Said Mlambo:

<h2>PRODUCER PRICE INDEX (FEBRUARY 2019=100) JUNE 2021</h2>
The month on month rate of change in June 2021 was 0.15 per cent gaining 0.15 percentage points on the May 2021 rate of 0.00 per cent.
This means that prices, as measured by the all items #PPI, increased at an average rate of 0.15 per cent from May 2021 to June 2021.
<ul>
<li>The month on month rate of change is given by the percentage change in the index of the relevant month of the current year compared with the index of the previous month in the current year.</li>
</ul>
The group of products that have contributed most to the rise in the index in June 2021 were the manufacture of other food products, manufacture of wearing apparel, mining and quarrying, quarrying of stones, sand and clay and manufacture of vegetables and animal oils and fats.
The rest of the other groups of products did not contribute to the increase or decrease of the index.
The year on year Producer Price Index #PPI rate of change stood at 73.50 per cent in June 2021.

<li>The year-on-year inflation rate is given by the percentage change in the index of the relevant month of the current year compared with the index of the same month in the previous year.</li>
</ul>
This means that prices as measured by the all items Producer Price Index #PPI increased at an average rate of 73.50 per cent.
The PPI for the month ending June 2021 stood at 4 617.21 compared to 4 610.45 in May 2021 and 2 661.18 in June 2020.

<div dir="auto" lang="en">The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT) has announced that the value of the country’s total exports slightly increased in September 2020.</div>
<div dir="auto" lang="en">The Agency reports that the value of exports was US$398.8 million which translates to a 2.4% increase from the value of total exports in August 2020, which was about US$389.3 million.</div>

<div>Meanwhile, imports increased by 9.0% to US$441.4 million during the same period, up from US$404.9 million in August 2020.</div>
<div>The Agency also noted that the difference between the value of a country’s imports and exports (trade of balance – BOT) has been negative from February to September 2020.</div>
<div>A positive trade balance had been maintained for four months in a row at the end of 2019.</div>
<div>This is happening when the minister of Finance, Professor Mthuli Ncube projected that the country’s economy will not deteriorate to the level he had earlier projected.</div>
<div>He dismissed as mere opinion projections by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) which indicated that Zimbabwe’s economy will further deteriorate this year before regaining in 2021.</div>
<div>The Zimbabwean economy was already on a downward trend when the coronavirus emerged and worsened the situation.</div>
