Elias Kanengoni was a high profile civil servant. At the time of his death he held the position of Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) Deputy Director - Internal.
Convicted of Attempted Murder
Kanengoni, together with another CIO operative, Kizito Chivamba, was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to seven years in prison after he shot late Gweru mayor Patrick Kombayi on 24 May, 1990 in an assassination attempt, just three days before general elections. Kombayi was contesting the Gweru urban seat under Zimbabwe Unity Movement (Zum) and his opponent was the late vice–president Simon Muzenda. Kanengoni and Chivamba were later pardoned by President Robert Mugabe. [1]
