Eight people died on the spot and 53 were seriously injured.[2] Among those that were injured 29 were male, 26 female and a minor.[3]
How it happened
It is alleged that the driver, who was only identified as Nyamande, was driving at an excessive speed. He failed to negotiate a curve and applied brakes causing the front tyre to burst and the bus to overturn.[2] The driver fled from the scene of the accident. The total number of people that were injured in the carnage numbered 53, 29 males and 23 males.[4] The accident occurred around 10 in the morning along Chirundu road, 37 km after Kafue gorge turn off. This was no the first time a bus from the same company had been involved in a fatal accident, in 2014 in June a bus from the same came company was involved in a head-on collision with a South African bound bus which claimed the life of a Zim Papers reporter.[5]
