Simon Blaimu Chapereka was a Zimbabwean chartered accountant and business executive. He was the managing director at Fidelity Life Assurance of Zimbabwe at the time of his death in October 2016.
Education
Chapereka was a Chartered Accountant who held an Honours Degree in Business Studies from the University of Zimbabwe and a Masters degree in Business Administration from the same university. He was also an Associate Member of the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and a Chartered Management Accountant.[1]
Career
Chapereka’s career started in 1985 when he joined Apex Corporation as a trainee manager. He then worked as an accountant for various companies and joined Fidelity Life in January 2000 as general manager in the finance and administration department. He moved to Fidelity Life Asset Management as Acting Managing Director in July 2001. He was appointed Chief Financial Officer of Zimre Holdings Limited in July 2001.[2][1] Chapereka took over as managing director of Fidelity Life Assurance of Zimbabwe from Solomon Tembo in 2003.
Suspension As Managing Director of Fidelity
In April 2016, Chapereka together with finance director German Mushoma were suspended following a probe by the Insurance and Pensions Commission into various allege corporate governance violations. Chapereka was been accused of amassing no less than 12 residential stands at Fidelity's Manresa and Harare South projects as well as advancing himself hefty loans which he failed to service adequately.[3]
The Insurance and Pensions Commission appointed KPMG Chartered Accountants to conduct a forensic audit to clarify matters relating to business operations and allegations of corporate governance malpractices at the company. The audit which began in April 2016 extended to August 2016.[4]
Death
Chapereka died on October 9, 2016. He collapsed at a fun run fund-raising activity held under the banner, Pharmacist Against Drug Abuse (PADA) in collaboration with the Pharmaceutical Society of Zimbabwe. He died while he was still under suspension from Fidelity Life Assurance.
